Best Concert in ANY language.......2007-05-13
This is an amazingly well done concert in every respect. I have never seen a concert DVD that has as much quality in EVERY area. Laura Pausini is amazing, and she is supported by a dynamite band, backup singers, great video/audio work, and a audience that is INTO the performance (too bad the one guy with the air horn had to ruin it). Literally, I do not understand 90% of the lyrics, but this performance is musically and technically riveting from beginning to end. I can't keep myself from playing it once or twice a week.
Excellent!!!!!!!.......2007-02-22
Laura Pausini is one of the best POP singers going, She sings well in Italian, English and Spanish. She has one of those voices that you just fall in love with. This live CD, Live in Paris 05 is cooking, it is a greatest hits live basically and you will definitely enjoy it. Vivimi, Se Fue, Tra Te E Il Mare, Surrender, E Retiorno Di Te, and La Cose Che Vivi are all excellent, well every song is excellent. This is a must have for Laura fans and I would recommend it anyone.
Probably the best concert in any language in the last 5 years .......2007-01-07
Spectacular voice, great set. This is one of those finds you go into with low expectations and get totally blown away by.
CD only in the US but the dvd is available at the euro amazon sites. NTSC format but region 2 so you will need a region free dvd player to watch it. If I didn't already have one I would buy one just to be able to watch it.
Sexiest woman on the planet. It's not the body, it's not the face, it's the hands. If you have a chance to watch the concert you will know what I mean. Never considered hands to be erotic but I have been converted.
Simply Excellent!.......2006-10-24
This defenitly is a must to have for sure. I got the special edition with a DVD. Totally recommended. You can fall in love of her voice since the first song. She's so professional! I can't wait she came to my town.

Amazon.com essential recording
In the beginning, Cecilia Bartoli seemed to do one thing better than anybody, i.e., Rossini arias, which would not guarantee a long career even for a singer of her ebullience. This live performance from the Teatro Olympico in Vincenza, Italy, shows how much she's expanded, both linguistically and musically. The first five selections reflect her newfound specialty, early opera. The three Caccini selections from the 17th century--accompanied by small string ensemble--are deeply felt and stylistically convincing enough to make one eager for future forays. She's guilty of spinning out Handel's "Lascia la spina" excessively but hits new heights of virtuosity in Vivaldi's "Agitata da due venti." The rest of the disc is for voice and piano, in a program including both some genuine discoveries by French composer Pauline Viardot-Garcia that reveal the singer's increasing emotional depths and less consequential ones by Donizetti and Rossini. Bartoli also sings Spanish songs, most notably Montsalvatge's "Canto negro," proving that the singer doesn't venture into a new language until she can truly feel in it. Remarkably, her voice maintains its strength and body in the deeper, mezzo-ish regions as well as in the high, soprano-range areas. Might she have two voices? --David Patrick Stearns

Buy two and give one to someone you love!.......2007-03-08
(That way, you can get free shipping!) Or, buy Opera Proibita also.
If you think you don't like listening to soprano soloists, you should buy this CD. I must say that I HATE listening to solo singing in general and soprano solo in particular! Well, this lady has stolen my heart! If you see her anywhere on the N American continent, please tell me.
The one-minute limit for listening on-line will simply not allow you to make a judgement. If I could legally allow you to hear track 5 "Griselda - Agitata da Due Venti" (Vivaldi), you would buy the CD without hearing anything else.
When I first heard Cecilia Bartoli on "Performance Today", the subject was "Opera Proibita" and I wrote to a friend who teaches voice at a local college and asked "Is she as good as I think, or am I just overreacting?" His simple response was "She's THAT good!"
This CD is of a live performance and you won't be disappointed except to realize that you COULD have been there, but weren't!
If she ever performs where I am able to see her, I'll be there. If I can talk to her, I will -- but I won't ask for my heart.
Highly recommended!
A joyful sample of the human voice........2006-06-12
'Live in Italy' by mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli, accompanied by pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet is, for those of us who do not know Italian and are not avid opera fans, a simply delightful essay in the beauty of the human voice. I am really happy this is not the first Bartoli album I have bought, as others, such as her recordings of French and Italian love songs have more substance to offer (if you don't know the operas from which these pieces are taken) but this recording, with its live ambiance, is a great pleasure all by itself, a very nice change from the somewhat frostier Fraulain Von Otter from the northern climes.
A sheer delight from start to finish.......2005-07-14
Although I rarely follow singers, even I am totally disarmed by Cecilia's magic spell of charm that criticism fails me. You will see that most of my reviews of music are about modern or Renaissance music, so for me to go out and lavish praise on her is really something totally out of the ordinary. Then again her singing is out of the ordinary in that it has an instantly recognisable warmth and captivating personality that makes her the outstanding singer of the current generation for me.
I have been impressed by Cecilia's tendency to avoid the well worn paths of 19th century Italian operas in favour of championing neglected earlier music whether that be Vivaldi, Haydn, or Salieri. She has always talked about how the centre of gravity of Western music seems to be shifting backwards in time, and in her case this means away from the Austro-German tradition to the time when the Italians dominated music. After all the musical elite of even Wagner's time could be still be heard muttering 'but he just isn't as good as those Italian...' at premiers of works such as Tannhäuser and it took a lot of convincing before the the idea of German opera became accepted. This shift backward in time here is exemplified by way the recital begins with the music of Caccini, the father of opera.
Here on this recording I particularly love the spontaneity of the live music making. Her ability to capture the declamatory nature of much older music such as with Caccini, Vivaldi and Handel suite live recording perfectly. Her manner of conveying the meaning of the words especially when singing in Italian is simply unrivalled in this situation. This is the sort of thing that all too often gets lost in studio recordings so it is a blessing that this is a live recording, where Cecilia seems to just glow. The spontaneity, the sheer magic of the moment - it is all a sheer delight from start to finish. At moments her voice seems so etheral, the hushed and rapt awe of the music making so breathtaking, that it simply beggers belief that the human voice can be so beautiful an instrument. This is what great music making should be all about.
As far as the recording itself goes I have never noticed any disturbing audience noises anywhere even on my system which tends to makes the slightest of rustling blatantly obvious. The recording engineers do an excellent job of capturing the ambience of the acoustic of the Teatro Olimpico in Vincenzo despite the presence of the audience.
A stunning recording and an absolute favourite to relax to or just to be inspired by.
Exquisite.......2003-01-31
"Her natural command of messa di voce phrasing, willingness to shade the voice away to the quietest pianissimo and acute sensitivity to the words of Caccini's love songs proved irresistible, attracting a generous mix of applause and foot stamping."
Such was the appreciation from the audience that the director had to request that the audience not stamp their feet as they would set off the alarm system.
There are hardly words to describe Cecilia Bartoli's remarkable vocal qualities, emotional range and warmth. When I listen to this CD, I am calmed completely. There is an element of comfort in her style. Maybe one could explain it as a lullaby for the soul.
She has the ability to support the longest of phrases on the back of a single breath all while varying the tone color and dynamic level. Singing seems as effortless as breathing as she becomes emotion all while capturing the drama and mood.
In this live performance from the Teatro Olympico in Vincenza, Italy, she performs each piece as if she is intimately entwined with the notes. How can music be this sensual and this comforting all at once? It just is. She can express a wide range of emotions, from profound despair to extreme joy.
The Teatro Olimpico is the worlds' oldest surviving covered theatre. It has fine acoustics, a sky-blue ceiling and marble. Cecilia Bartoli wanted to perform in one of the great treasures of Italy's cultural heritage and this led to this live performance with concert pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet who seems to sense every emotion in Cecilia's voice. It is a sublime combination of talent which is further enhanced by violins, viola, cello, violone, archlute and harpsichord.
Tu ch'hai le penne, Amore - A song to love asking love to fly to where the heart lies and to promise that his heart and soul were ever hers.
Amarilli - Delicate and beautiful expression of true love.
Al fonte, al prato - You can feel spring approaching and this song has a certain energy Cecilia embraces as she sings away troubles and sadness to allow in merriment.
Lascia la spina - Melancholy. "Old age will creep up on you when your heart does not expect it."
Agitata da due venti - Cecilia's voice takes flight in this song about waves raging in a stormy sea. She almost becomes the force of the ocean as her voice surges and dives and wow.
Oiseaux, si tous les ans, K307 - She embodies a haunting vulnerability and the freshness of spring/summer. This song ends far too quickly.
La pastorella, D528 - Calm beauty to reflect a shepherdess in a meadow. Innocent love.
Havanaise - It seems like she has a completely different voice in this song as she reaches
to new ranges in depth. Charmed by a song? Perhaps.
Hai luli! - A seductive treatment of a song asking "where can my love be?"
"What's the point of living without a lover?"
Zaide - High energy and fast paced. A song about an orphan.
Malinconia, ninfa gentile - Gorgeous and poetic song.
Ma rendi pur contento - She really captures longing and an almost delicate purity.
La conocchia - Light and breezy.
Me voglio fa 'na casa - A song about the desire to build a house surrounded by the sea. Fantasy and happiness.
Mi langero tacendo - Poignant moment.
"I shall not complain of my bitter fate;
but, my beloved, do not hope for me not to love you."
Mi lagnero tacendo ll resentimento - the sorrow continues. The lover is said to be cruel.
Mi lagnero tacendo Sorzico - more complaints of cruelty and sorrow. She seems to capture frustration so exquisitely and is that stomping I hear? ;)
L'Orpheline du Tyrol - The Tyrolean orphan girl. Jean-Yves Thibaudet really takes the stage at first and Cecilia follows almost timidly. A song of tragedy, hunger and suffering.
Riedi al soglio from Rossini's opera Zelmira left seasoned connoisseurs dazzled. After the aria's final cadence, they broke from their awe-struck silence to add to the shouts of "encore."
Voi che sapete - Light and yet still dramatic. Desire, torment, ice. All explored fully by her voice. You can hear "torment" when she sings "martir" even if you could not see the words or follow along. Her voice really "flutters" when she sings "palpito e tremo." It is just amazing.
Canzonetta spagnuola - A muse comes to torment a painter.
Caro mio ben - A lover grows faint without love. Solitary melodies and you can almost feel the chill in the room or the feeling of despair the lover feels.
Canto negro - Is there anything she can't sing? This piece might seem completely out of place, but by now everyone is completely drunk with emotion from this performance.
Seguidille - Pleasure comes when two people are together. Definitely so when Cecilia Bartoli and Jean-Yves Thibaudet perform together. This song is almost a metaphor of the entire intoxicating experience. I just love how the audience goes absolutely wild after this song.
And too soon, it is over. I look forward to one day viewing the performance on DVD. It will be so much easier to understand the words now that I've literally studied this performance. Knowing the words definitely adds to the subtle emotions and more expressive moments.

Cecilia Live.......2002-07-12
I have loved her low and warm voice ever since the first time I listened to her, the Italian mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli. With respect and tenderness she treats the composers, whose works she performs while adding her own dimension. She transports me with her art. It is as if we become one person, and I experience her joy of music. Together we share a glimpse of eternity.
On this album which was recorded live at the Teatro Olimpico, Vicenza, Italy in 1998 Cecilia Bartoli offers her listeners a varied programme comprised of several composers: Caccini, Haendel, Vivaldi, Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti, Bellini, Viardot, Schubert, Montsalvatge and Bizet. She's accompanied in Caccini, Haendel and Vivaldi by the Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca (Baroque string ensemble) and for the other pieces by Jean-Yves Thibaudet on piano. The accompanying booklet contains the lyrics, translations and further information.
Ms. Bartoli certainly has expanded her musical horizons here in several ways. On this disc she sings in Italian, French and Spanish. I loved her intense and heartfelt rendition of Caccini's and Haendel's arias. The passionate acrobatics of Vivaldi. And the Sonatori de la Gioiosa Marca gave her a fine support. She made a warm and lovely Cherubino in Mozart's famous 'Voi che sapete'. I also loved her sparkling interpretations of Viardot's 'Havanaise', Rossini's 'Mi lagnero tacendo' or his 'Canzonetta spagnuola'. But Montsalvatge's 'Canto negro' made me feel definitely uncomfortable and Ms. Bartoli herself didn't connect with it. Although I liked her rendition of Bizet's 'Seguedille, I still missed something there. Jean-Yves Thibaudet lends her an excellent, attentive and expressive support.
Although I would have preferred some more Baroque pieces at this concert, this live album is a keeper for me. Everytime the bundle of pure joy that is Cecilia Bartoli has the power to move me deeply!

Customer Reviews:
Yes, not so good.......2007-03-30
Happydog's review is amazingly accurate.....
I'm a Lou Reed fanatic and rather like the loud cacaphony of Lou with feedback and distortion. I bought the original bootleg and have not even listen to this "remaster."
The blow your ears off loud is alright (if you like that as much as I do), but..........
Lou is a great guitarist when he wants to be. Hendrix once said Lou Reed was his favorite guitarist. Lou is also a control freak and spoiled this concert.
After The Blue Mask (with the distinct separate guitar tracks) which displays Reed's and Quine's brillance, this pretty much sucks.
Kill Your Sons is good, nothing else is and oddly we don't get The Blue Mask, or The Gun or many of the great stuff from The Blue Mask era, even though we know it was played. What's a matta, Lou, Quine show you up??
I dunno, but Lou is always a hard read. He has his tantrums and kicks out people like John Cale and later blames Bowie for ruining his career; then kisses and makes up as he did with Warhol. I have always been bothered by the fact that Quine absolutely idolized Reed and the Velvets and Reed seemed to have just dumped him.
I own everything available that he has ever recorded. I truely believe he is one of the three greatest living Poets of our time (along with Patti Smith and Roger Waters).
He is a mystery, when he is great, it is stunning. When he's bad; it's BAD.
He can be great; He can be bad and this is bad.
unfortunately, not all that good.......2007-03-25
You would think that with this band, this would be a great disc, right? Sadly, it's not all that great. Lou and Quine were at loggerheads at the time. As a result, Quine's guitar is oddly muted and minimized on much of this. As much as I love Lou Reed, and I do, he will never be the guitar player that Robert Quine was. This CD suffers, as a result, from Lou's lack of guitar skills - even on his own music, by his own standards. The second thing that makes it a not-buy is Lou's refusal or inability to sing. He simply shouts his way through all the songs. The third reason to give this a pass is that there are no dynamics. All the songs are played as loud as possible, meaning that ear fatigue sets in a little over halfway through. It begins to sound very samey after a while. Lou's best live set remains the semi-bootleg "American Poet" album. Even for a Lou Reed fan, this is not a must, I'm sorry to say.
Lou reed- Live in Italy.......2007-01-06
Fantastic, glorious. this is much more than what I thought. You got it and you got a fantastic live on concert
Lou Reed Talk-Sings on this.......2006-12-25
I love Lou Reed - but I really can't stand that talk-singing thing he started doing in the 80s. This is a pretty unremarkable disc. Some of the Robert Quine work is worth a listen if you can find a cheap, used copy.

Colin Davis is arguably the finest Berlioz conductor in the world; both of his recordings of Les Troyens are magnificent and elsewhere he's rarely bettered. His winning streak continues with this live performance with the LSO of Harold in Italy and the ballet music from Troyens. Tabea Zimmermann's solo viola is as grand, brilliantly flavorful, and picturesque as the LSO's playing; and the entire performance--swift and rhythmically propulsive--is simply fantastic. The introspective moments--listen to the way the air positively shimmers at the "canto religioso"--are as effective as the big moments, and the huge finale is truly wild without ever lapsing into anarchy. This is controlled but lusty playing helped by the crisp recording--even the brass, playing with abandon, doesn't drown out the highest strings or piccolo. The Troyens music should probably have been a curtain raiser rather than an encore, but it's handsomely played and a nice, exotic touch. If you'd like, you can throw out your other recordings of Harold--this one is all you need. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
A sweet, flowing account of Harold with lovely lyricism.......2006-11-14
Every word of the Amazon reviewer's rave sounds convincing--he's echoing the general rapture that greeted this live LSO recording in the UK--so I hoped that reality would match the advance hype. In some wys it does. The London Sym. plays with real delicacy and finesse throghout, and Davis's feeling for Berlioz's lyric line is both natural and touching. Also, Tadea Zimmermann is that rare soloist who can keep the viola from sounding stodgy and lachrymose. She's far from sounding lusty, as the Amazon reviewer claims, but is instead sweet and lively, both highly desirable qualities. On those accounts alone, this is a very fine reading of Harold in Italy.
Is it the ne plus ultra? Well, we have two classic recordings from the great William Primrose under Beecham and Koussevitzky, both of which are livelier and more volatile than this one, but of course they are in dated mono. In stereo there's Davis himself in his younger years, along with a vibrant recording under John Eliot Gardiner, both on Philips. For volatility no one beats Bernstein in an almost raucous performance on EMI. I think you could call the new Davis reading pre-eminent only if you prefer its lilting rhythms and flowing contours. If so, then his relative coolness and control in the finale will seem fine. Highly recommended.
Best Harold en Italie courtesy of Davis, etc........2004-04-28
Sir Colin Davis still remains our finest interpreter of Berlioz. His latest release on LSO Live, featuring the talents of not only the London Symphony Orchestra but also violist Tabea Zimmerman, is quite simply the finest recording of Harold en Italie I've heard. This is a grand, lively interpretation replete with Zimmerman's exquisite viola solos and fiery playing from the LSO's woodwinds and horns, especially in the last movement. The only recording I've heard which comes close to this in quality is an old Lorin Maazel Deutsche Grammophon recording with him conducting the Berlin Philharmonic. However, the London Symphony Orchestra's playing is warmer and more vibrant than their peers in Berlin. Without question this latest recording should be regarded as the definitive version of Berlioz's Harold en Italie.

Beautiful.......2006-02-25
I bought this mainly because I'm a completist who fell in love with the Cranes a few months ago and had already acquired all the bands studio albums. I'm normally not crazy about live albums, but this is an exception. Whatever it is about the Cranes that makes them so compelling (a combination of sincerity, mystery, tenderness and drive?) is really here in spades. The song selection is weighted toward their more recent stuff, especially Future Songs, but even if you have that album, this is a really beautiful "must have" in my opinion as well. Exceptionally good recording and engineering, and even more of a tug at the heartstrings than their best recent studio work. Get it if you like the Cranes.
Piling on.......2005-12-22
As said, the reviews already posted do a good job of speaking to this CD's merits. But what the heck, nobody knows who this band is (hardly), and considering that 99% of the music released is pure dreck, it's a shame and a pity for stuff this good to stay under the radar. It's unique music by talented people who have been doing it for a long time. It can't be for love of money, I don't see how they survive as it is, so it must be for the music. It shows.
Bliss..........2003-12-17
Like you've read in every other review previous to mine this is truely a gem. Having stumbled upon Cranes' "Future Song" a few months back after one listen I was hooked, this group shines live as all true musicians do. If you are a fan of similar groups like Hooverphonic,Mono,Halou,Bows, etc. I highly recommend giving Cranes a listen especially this live collection.
This Is Sooooo Good.......2003-10-30
Wow, I had no idea this band was this competent live. Alison's voice is AMAZING on this disc. This girl has the writing and vocal talents in the same league as Bjork. The eq, mixing, and acoustics are extremely pleasant on this recording. They're not the most heavily funded band out there, so what they had to work with as far as gear and sound engineer staff probably wasn't what you'd expect from famous bands on big labels. There's some wobbling and imperfections hear and there, but it's quite endearing in its own way. I'm compelled to recommend this to someone who doesn't have any or many Cranes CD's. This is one to get. The entire range of the band's greatest moments is represented here. I just can't believe so many of those moments from their albums that send a wonderful chill (or whatever you want to call that pleasant tingly sensation) down my spine translated so well in a live setting. I feel an urge to buy a plane ticket to their next concert.
An amazing concert, an amazing band.......2003-09-10
Not much to say about this.
The song selection is near-perfect (not too heavily-reliant on their newest album "Future Songs", a nice mix of older songs), and the sound-quality is near-perfect.
Highly recommended.

Endearing Collection of Montovani Film Music.......2006-09-28
This is a very good collection of Montovani film music. These recording are so soothing and pleasing to the ear. Most impressive are Montovani's versions of YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and LAWRENCE OF ARABIA. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE is incredibly beautiful.
Movies and Mantovani Make Magnificent Musical Memories. .......2005-04-18
In this year in which fans celebrate Mantovani's 100th birthday, another excellent British compilation of some of the great maestro's original recordings has been released. The tracks on this CD come predominantly from Mantovani's 1957 bestselling LP, Film Encores, his 1959 Film Encores Volume 2, and his 1967 LP entitled "Mantovani/Hollywood." Up until now, the six tracks from the Hollywood LP have been the most difficult to find on CD in locations other than Japan, and it includes Monty's exciting arrangements of the themes from Zorba the Greek, the Magnficent Seven, Lawrence of Arabia, and You Only Live Twice. While these alone are worth the CD price, the remaining selections comprise the very best of Mantovani's film music library, including Unchained Melody (now better known as the theme from the movie "Ghost"), April Love, the theme from The Apartment, and Charlie Chaplin's Limelight. Attentive Mantovani fans will hear the inclusion of a less heard variation of the "golden hit" Moon River in which the maestro replaced the trumpet solo with the soprano sax in a later recording of this forever popular number. Sooner or later, and we hope sooner, everything recorded by the original orchestra led by the incomparable Mantovani will appear on CD. That is a just and fitting tribute to the most popular light orchestra leader in the 20th Century whose music will live on and will be heard to delight fans all over the world in the 21st.

The Honor To Be One of the Greatest European Rock Event.......2006-06-17
Where the hell is Jim Peterik? Well at least he has been out of Survivor since 1996. He left the band to have more freedom for the range of music. Now he is one of the busiest man in AOR field. He not only co-writes a number of great songs with some of the greatest talents in rock field such as John Lynn Turner, Kevin Chalfant, Kelly Keagy, Mick Jones, Don Barnes, Kevin Cronin, Jack Blades, and so on. but he tours with Ides of March members, occasionally reunites 80s rivals for World Stage concerts. And he now have duo project of his own Pride of Lions which already put out two masterpiece albums. In August 2005, Pride of Lions featuring young turk Toby Hitchcock was invited to Belgium for Lokersee Feesten rock festival well-known annual rock events attracting more than 20,000 people one night. As the opening introduction shows POl was invited hugely because for honoring the legend of Survivor Jim Peterik and future rock star Toby Hitchcock. And the audience with the exception of avid fans carrying Pride of Lions banner were lured probably because they heard Survivor hit songs would come alive...
Disc 1: Live In Belgium
Music fans at the festivals are really fortunate to have some of the greatest past and present songs one night. Three Survivor hits THE SEARCH IS OVER, I CAN'T HOLD BACK, and EYE OF THE TIGER were played that night. Particularly Search Is Over became really current and modern and even female voice can sing it. I Can't Hold Back also were differently arranged but it was well done, too. By inserting Survivor hits it proved how POL songs were excellent even comparing with past hits. Yep. It is songs like MUSIC AND ME, SOUND OF HOME, and THE GIFT OF SONG that we miss about present Survivor.
Disc2: Unreleased Studio and Live material
Before buying this live album, be sure to check which version European or Japanese you are going to get. Because there are huge differences in tracks included.
JAPANESE VERSION
1 Dark Angel
2 Black Ribbons(Voice of the World)
3 Feels Like Another Planet
4 Gone(live)
5 I Can't Hold Back(live)
EUROPEAN VERSION
1 Reckless Love
2 Stand By You
3 So Deadly
4 Surrender to the Night
5 Dark Angel
6 Black Ribbons(Voice Of the World)
7 Feels Like Another Planet
Verdict: I wish I were there...
Rating: 80 out of 100. Toby and Jim could live up to the legend and the audience's expectation. But personally I would rather see it on DVD.
Recommeded for: Survivor fans and Jim Peterik and Pride of Lions fans.

Customer Reviews:
Robert QUINE. The man who revitalized Lou's career........2006-06-17
This is not the "best" Lou Reed-Robert Quine performance, but if you are even a casual Lou Reed fan you need to own this. The late R.Q. was credited (justifiably so) with encouraging Lou to pick up his guitar again after years of walking through his performances in a drugged, detached stupor. This was the age of "left channel, right channel" dogfights. On the "Blue Mask" album, it gets pretty terrifying. Here, Lou reinvents a few of his classics with a Neil Young & Crazy Horse kind of "Godfather of Grunge" intensity. Highlights? "Kill Your Sons," with the insane solos...and the killer, the "Some Kinda Love / Sister Ray" medley. "IIIIIIIIIIIIm...searchin' for my mainline...Woah, babe...I couldn't hit it side...woah, sideways..." The "Live In Italy" album makes "Rock & Roll Animal" sound like an Eric Carmen album, because Lou is EASILY ten times more insane than Steve Hunter and Dick Wagner will EVER be on guitar. After Quine, Lou never set the guitar down again. R.I.P., Bob...this is a great way for you to be remembered...and the high water mark of Lou's resurrected career.
Lou Reed In Italy- I was there!.......2004-03-31
I saw the Lou Reed concert when he was in Rome during his Italy tour and it was a concert never to forget! It was held in the ruins of Circus Maximus next to the Colosseum which is essentially a big hole in the ground. The concert was staged at the bottom of this ruin and temporary 12 foot fences were erected around the concert seating . Well you didn't have to have a ticket to see the concert because all round the concert was the former Circus Maximus seating areas which were on grassy slopes looking down into the concert area. I was part of the crowd in these free seats that sat and watched the concert has it started to begin. At first there was no opening act, just loud rock music played over the loudspeakers. During this time there was a crowd of non ticket holders who weren't content with sitting in the free seats. They decided to try and climb the fence to get into the paying seats. Security was doing the best it could to stop those persons from being successful but they soon were out numbered and they called in the riot police. The riot police formed a line on one side of the concert area and then shot tear gas into the crowd of rowdy fence climbers. Unfortunately they didn't realize they were down wind from their target so the tear gas blew right back into their faces. Embarrassed and angry they took out their batons and charged the crowd. By this time the concert had already started on schedule despite the ruckus going on and the first and only song I heard Lou Reed play was Sweet Jane. After that it wasn't safe for anyone to stay in the free seats and continue to watch the concert so we left. It was quite an incredible experience for me to be a part of that concert that day. Later I bought the album of this concert and it is great not only for the music but for the memories it brings back every time I listen to it.
Lou Reed's best record.......2003-02-01
This is, by far, the best post-VU record of Reed's career!! Lord have mercy, folks, consider only the line-up here: Lou and Robert Quine on the dual assault of white noise-drenched, growling acid guitars, Fernando Saunders on his soaring fuzz-drived bass and the outstanding Fred Maher pounding the drums with skill and fury!!! The set-list is also superb: raging, fast, punky-adrenalined renditions of VU classics like "White Light / White Heat", "Rock and Roll", "Heroin" and "I'm Waiting for my Man", with also great versions of Lou's solo material, with a special remark to a feeback-drived, powerfully scary "Kill your Sons".
2 1/2 Stars.......2002-10-17
Recorded in 1983 with Lou's most critically acclaimed band since the Velvet Underground.."Live In Italy" comes with a lot of hype and promise.
The band is far from tight and not in very fine form at all here. Reed's voice is totally shot and he compounds the problem by seemingly insisting upon shouting and screaming his way through much of the material.
Very raw and very hard to listen to..."Live In Italy", with all it's clamor, is almost the direct opposite of "Perfect Night In London"..meaning it's the weakest of Reed's live releases.
For hardcore Reed fanatics only.
The Best Lou Reed Live Album.......2001-01-14
Forget about 'Lou Reed Live', 'Rock'n'Roll Animal' and even 'Perfect Night in London'(All great records, by the way), Lou Reed Live in Italy is the best Lou Reed live album, bar none.
Just look at the track list, for crying out loud. After a three seconds long introduction, you can hear Reed's guitar tears into the classic opening chords of Sweet Jane, the best riff he's ever written. This version of Sweet Jane is argueably the best version out there - Lou singing 'You know they're sayin' Jane, oh Sweet Jane' is Lou at his finest, and Robert Quine... we'll talk about Robert Quine.
Oh, why not talk about him now. Robert Quine is the best guitar player to have ever worked with Lou Reed. He is as good as Mike Ranson who worked with Bowie and Lyle workman who played lead for Frank Black. He's quite possibly even better. Listen to the lead guitar in 'Waves of Fear', it's incredible.
Lou's new stuff here is great - Waves of Fear and Average Guy are the stand outs, but the older Reed is what truly shines through. Sally Can't Dance no More is a vicious attack on fame, The Satellite of Love is lou's romance at it's best, and Walk on the Wild Side is, well, a walk on the wild side.
Still, to me this will allways be memorable because of the Velvet Songs. Before and after, Reed will atmpt to make the Velvet stuff feel at home in his sets, and, with the exception of the Loaded songs, he will allways fail. This is the exception. White Light/White Heat, Waiting for the Man and of course, Heroin, Reed's finest song, shine through the able musicians.
I'm way to young to have been alive through that Lou Reed tour, and even through I've seen Reed live, I'm still at agony for not have seen him live at those 1984 shows. This is the closest I'll ever get.
