      Adventures in Stereo make pleasant pop in "Alternative Stereo Sounds," a lush album with a sunny sound. Imagine a slightly artier version of the Beach Boys, still mellow and fun but not quite evenly made. It's a fun listen, with hints of brilliance that pop up like seashells in the sand.

      It starts off shakily with the light gothic "Silence Falls," and then into the rattly "Down in the Traffic." But things even out with the piano-pop "Dominique" and and bright "I Once Knew." By the time we get to "Out of Sight," the mood is that of a sunset beach party.

      There's a small downturn in songs like "This Time," a pensive melody with a distinctly melancholy flavor. But things turn back up again into a spray of more fun, sunny pop... and turn back down in the shimmering "Silence Is," which takes the album right back to the beginning.

      It doesn't take a genius to realize that band frontman Jim Beattie is a huge Beach Boys fan -- while Adventures in Stereo is slower and a bit artier, it positively drips with bright 60s nostalgia pop. Which could be, depending on your perspective, a good thing or a bad thing.

      Musically it's pretty good -- lush, smooth and full of solid instrumentation. At times they do get carried away -- "Down in the Traffic" is bogged down by clattery percussion and an ill-placed harmonium solo. Fortunately the piano melodies are solid and even outstanding, as is some of the percussion and most of the guitar work. And finally, Judith Boyle has a pretty voice -- high and a little breathy. It's not a terribly good voice, but it's a pleasant one.

      Adventures in Stereo's sophomore album is a pleasant album, and former Primal Scream members Judith and Jim know what enjoyable music sounds like.

      AIS are pretty obvious in displaying their influences (one song outright steals it's melody line from "In The Parking Lot" by the Beach Boys). But don't underestimate them. This is absolutely brilliant, hypontic, dreamy, melodic experimental pop that sounds like little else that I've heard.

      In theory, Adventures In Stereo are equal parts Brian Wilson and Steve Reich, and yet their records are nowhere near as pretentious as that might lead one to believe. They are lovely, entertaining, lush, and pleasing to the ear. And hypnotic. Boy, are they hypnotic.

      If any of the above sounds appealing to you, buy this now. Highly recommended, as are all of Adventures In Stereo's records.
