Influential and awsome.......2006-05-27
Wow I cant believe this masterpiece has only two reviews. I bought this cd a long time ago because I was a major fan of Cradle of Filth, and Dani said in an interview that this was one of his favorite cds. I didnt take to this cd immediatly, but years later this is just awsome. I find the guitars on this cd just immaculate. Another reviewer complained of the drumming. It isnt the strongpoint of this cd, but it hardly ruins it. The sound has a doom, gothic sound but mixed with metallica. At least thats my opinion.
Gothic 10 Excellent guitar throughout this one. Towards the end you have some nice keyboards. This is primarily a guitar song. This is also one of the few songs on the cd that has female vocals. They are not overbearing like some bands are. They are just right.
Dead Emotion 9 A bit heavier than the last one. Lots of good growls. The guitars are a mix of choppy riffs and spiraling solos.
Shattered 8 It might be a little repetitive at points but dont mistake repetitive for boring. It sounds so good you wont care.
Rapture 9 Not really much I can say to describe this except that it is really good. A bit darker than the first three.
Eternal 10 This is the classic paradice lost song to me. Too good for words. Definantly my favorite.
Falling Forever 7.5-8 I wouldnt really say that any songs on here are weak, but if I had to pick a weak song this would probably be one of them. Still hardly a bad song.
Angel Tears 6 I really dont know why they put this on the cd. Its just a couple minutes of guitar. The guitar is good but they should have just made it into a song.
Silent 7.5 This one has really good guitars, but it kind of just goes on too long.
Painless 9 After a few letdowns if that what you want to call them. This song gets back on track with one of the best songs on the cd.
Desolate 8 Very dark instrumental. Brooding doom. Sounds like a horror film.
Rotting Misery [Doom Dub] [*][Dub] 10 My second favorite after eternal. The riffs are just bad a$$, and there is a lot of good keys too. Brooding and dark.
Breeding Fear [Demolition Dub] [*][Dub] 8.5 This sounds very death metal oriented which is out of character for the rest of the cd. Very good.
So if you are into gothic or doom metal like My Dying Bride, Tristania, or Cradle of filth. Or if you are just a metal head you definantly need this one in your collection.
Unforgivable drumming ruins an otherwise perfect jewel.......2004-10-31
This monumental Paradise Lost album is beautiful, haunting, surreal, dark, dramatic, and, well, Gothic! Unfortunately, the drummer's time is murderously unsteady and ruins this otherwise magnificent tome! Arrrrrrrggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhh.
The ultimate doom/death album.......2004-03-21
Their second and by far their best album, "Gothic" combines the brutal doom/death approach of their debut with beautiful melodies and the occasional orchestra and female vocals. Probably the first to do so and certainly the best, this album created an entire genre. (Although present day "gothic metal" has nothing to do with this dark masterpiece). Beautiful guitar melodies and awesome grunting by Mr. Nick Holmes, the best grunt ever in my opinion. An album with no weak moments and many classics like "Shattered", "Rapture", "Eternal", "The Painless" and off course the title track. Present day Paradise Lost sucks pretty bad I admit, but on this album they were certainly for real! Poser Marilyn Manson goths of today, please stay away from this album 'cause it was not created for you and you couldn't handle it! For true metalheads though this is the ultimate doom/death album.

Customer Reviews:
Masterpiece.......2002-03-21
They may not have been the British doom pioneers, but Paradise Lost always knew what it was all about. This, their second album, had everything - melancholic, emotional sounds that, unlike many other Doom metal bands, actually have memorable tunes. The songs are also of a reasonable length, unlike My Dying Bride's 10+ minute epics. If you ever want just a single Doom metal album in your entire collection, get this - it's the only album I have ever given 10/10 for, and will probably remain so for a very long time... perhaps, it is the only perfect album to exist.
the first true doom-metal.......2001-03-26
paradise lost sure have changhed as the years passed but you can hear the true roots of their sound these classic is the foundation of the all doom/goth metal scene in each band today(tiamat, katatonia, moonspell, theater of tragedy etc,)you can hear the basics of doom metal as gregor mackintosh wrote them back in 1991, a must have for a true doom metal listner.

Customer Reviews:
Vey moody, masterful release.......2000-11-24
Paradise Lost are ultimate at creating a dark mood. They are probably the first doom metal band (and the best one by the way) to use symphonic female vocals in their music. They also use violins in the tracks Gothic and Eternal. This is a fantastic work of musical art. The harmonies are really great and really help the dark, edgy, guitar. This is their finest realease. I recommend anyone who enjoys gothic/doom metal and likes music to be moody and feeling inspiring, pick this up. Choice tracks are Gothic, Shattered, Rapture, Eternal(best song on here), and the instrumental Angel Tears. Pick this up, you will not be disappointed.
This cd is a deathmetal/doom clssic !.......2000-07-18
The first doom metal group i ever was ofcouse black-sabbath! And fell in love w/ doom metal! for fans who like old my dying bride and paramaecium and old theatre of tradegy will love this cd! LONG LIVE PARADISE LOST!
great!.......2000-06-13
If you think of their latest releases, you may not believe that this is the same Band that made "One Second", "Host" or even "Icon". Back then, Paradise Lost didn't play New-Age-Wave music but marked the territory of any Gothic-Metal band of today, Theatre of Tragedy, Tristania and the like. Being the first Death/Doom Album with female vocals, you can easily call this one a milestone of Metal. It has nothing to do with the Style since Icon, but it stands the test of time with "Gothic" and "Eternal" being outstanding killers!
lost their sound in paradise of dow?.......1999-12-13
It`s not a bad album, it`s just not as good as the likes of LOST PARADISE, the female vox let the album down, other than that not a bad album to buy!

Product Description
From Down Under the third mournful opus of ELEGEION reaches me. Going back to their Doom roots after a Blackish second album; The Last Moment is a sad and beautiful piece of art. The band formed around mastermind Anthony play Doom Metal, drenched in a gothic and romantic atmosphere.
KATATONIA comes to mind when hearing the depressive riffs, but where that band captivates you with its nihilistic atmosphere, ELEGEION is much more romantic, highly accentuated by the violins and emotional guitar leads. Important factor in the bands music is also the angelic voice of Dieudonne; while I dub her voice as angelic she is definitely different from the common Gothic Metal vocalist, also commonly described as angelic. Dieudonnes voice is frail, yet crystal clear, reminding me both of Astrid van der Veen (AMBEON) and even some Norah Jones. Shes always melancholic and never sings too fast or high, extremely befitting for the music. This is best shown on the beautiful, almost tear jerking ballad Scars.
The opening title track already delivers everything ELEGEION are about, slow hypnotizing riffs, haunting classical arrangements, in particular the violin, which, in my opinion cant be used enough in Doom Metal. Anthony also uses a growl here which works well with Dieudonnes voice, but they never create the by now clichéd beauty and the beast effect.
Songs like this one and Confusion are mixed with ballads like Scars and Taste where Dieudonne and her piano + the violin take the main role. And while the latter balances on the edge of what can be called Metal they fit in perfect with the aesthetic created by Anthony and his band. A beautiful album which should be enjoyed alone, with plenty of time afterwards, you wont feel rushed listening to this, but rather would like to refill your glass of wine and make another journey through the bands depressed world.
