Medicine is another studio group that owes a strong debt to the Valentines, but Los Angeles-based songwriter/producer Brad Laner finally emerges from Kevin Shields' shadow on Her Highness, the band's third and best album. For the first time, songs such as "All Good Things" and "Candy Candy" are strong enough that they would shine even if you took away the highly stylized production, massive guitars and keyboards, and mysterious layers of strings that are the band's reason for being. --Jim DeRogatis

5 out of 5 stars blissed out.......2006-03-10

having already digested loveless and daydream nation, my 15 year old mind was ripped wide open by this record after it's release back in the day. her highness is graced by gorgeous melody just breaking out of clouds of guitar noise, neither one obscuring the other.
one of the many great lost bands of the early nineties, medicine gives their listeners a strong combination of the above mentioned groups, mbv and sonic youth, while managing to sound like neither of them. medicine, during their reign of 92-95 may have even been better.
if you do not have a copy of her highness, do yourself a great service. then, buy everything else that brad laner ever touched, as the man is not only a guitar hero, but an electronics genius with his other project electric company.
not for the faint of ears. indie poppers beware. noiseniks rejoice.

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest albums ever.......2005-02-04

This album is a modern rock classic! If you have any interest in bands like My Bloody Valentine, Sigur Ros, or even the Smashing Pumpkins, then you have to buy this album. This will easily become one of your all time favorites. Anyone who just likes rock music has to listen to this. It is great head phone music. This is not merely more shoegazer mush. This is definately something special. This is music that comes to life out of your speakers. It just baffles the mind how this gem has been discarded and forgotten.
Her Highness is beautiful psychedelic pop rock music. The transcendent layers and lush distortion just create this incredibly gorgeous sound. The first track will make you a believer and get you hooked. The whole album is just bliss. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD now. I highly encourage you to also check out their debut "shot forth self living." That one is louder, definately not as soft, but still just as beautiful.
By the way, the new Medicine (2003) album sounds NOTHING like this. There is the same reinventing pop soul, but most of the sound has been replaced with more electronic pop beeps. Even the band's line up has changed. It's kind of neat, but not nearly as good as this.

5 out of 5 stars My obsession of the summer of 96.......2004-02-28

This album is indespensible. No doubt about it, this tops anything that brad laner or kevin shields have done before or since. This is the pinnacle of what shoegazer became. The fact that Medicine is seen as an MBV clone baffles me. MBV never sounded this focused or melodic. "All Good Things", "Aahruss" and "Further Down" (along with it's dubbed out intro "Further Dub") should all be taught in Rocking Out 101. In my high school years, this album provided dozens of hours of post-blunt fun. All fans of 90's alternative rock do yourselves a favor and buy this album. Subject yourself to Brad's fully realized vision and get lost in the beautifully abrasive levels of this album.
