Customer Reviews:
A Grey Album for Donut.......2003-09-12
At the time I bought it (many moons ago), I thought this was their best album to date. It's undoubtedly their strongest thematically, but it is darker, and a bit more conventional than their other albums, which are still far more listenable (I've suddenly realised that I've never listened to this album with anyone else). Even "Revenge Fantasies..." had more creative spasticity (?) than this album did. This album is a creative doom-metal album in the manner of Jane's Addiction's better efforts, but not the brightest moment in Alice Donut's short and wonderful career.
It is a serious album, and you should definitely think about buying it, but frankly, their first album is preferable.
The only Donut album you need.......2003-08-19
This is one of the masterpieces of the underground music world. There is an obvious difference between this album and their earlier stuff, and that is that they finally learned how to write amazing songs! Before, their content was just gory and silly, and offensive in at best a slapstick way. Now, they have managed to put forth something that actually appears to have come from a deranged psycho, rather than from a psycho-esque comedian. The music is mellower at places, and they pull this off amazingly well. It's actually a surprise to me that this album isn't more popular, and is on my list of the most underrated punk albums of all time. The liner notes by themselves make the purchase of the CD worthwile.
This album is truly a work of art. The recommended listening environment involves a smoky room playing cards, preferably something competitive and sneaky like Poker or Spades.
depraved yet wacky and different.......2003-02-20
this was my first donut album. there really is no band to compare them too. they are quite depraved and sick (with songs like hang the dog outside the window) but also imaginitive and musically such a melting pot of punk, psychadelia and rock, with touches of metal and jazz.
the closer (in my life) is something you either get stoned, too, fall asleep too or seduce your babysitter too. the drums are light and the guitars are sleepy and trans inducing. there are more upbeat tunes such as magdalaina. another favorite is hang the dog which, although lyrically weird is interesting and musically dynamic with the start/stop guitar riff. good drummer holds it all together (glad someone stays together in that mess of madness)
donut are an interesting band and this was my first from this band and i enjoyed it very much. i think it is a good place to start if your just getting into them.
Donut spirals downward.......2002-03-22
Between "Mule" and "Untidy Suicides," Alice Donut ditched their bass player and second vocalist Ted Houghton. Whether Houghton was the brains behind the band's wild, sophisticated pyschedlic-punk style of just plain damn fun music, or they ditched him to try something else, something plainly went wrong with this album. Compared to earlier Donut work, it is much darker and more sinister in tone, and musically it shows a strong heavy metal influence (relative to earlier Donut works). You can hear that it is the same band, but suddenly something has gone awry. While the lyrics are stronger than those of the forgettable "Revenge Fantasies of the Impotent" album, the musical style has lost the verve that gave Donut their unique appeal.
THE BEST BAND YOU NEVER HEARD OF........1999-01-24
Forgive the Zappa paraphrase. Alice Donut is a dramatically underappreciated band, supported mostly by their die-hard following and the few new comers. Now defunct, you should quickly buy up all their albums before Alternative Tentacles quits printing them! Crazy syncopations, operatic vocals, jazz-metal...how could you NOT like 'em?
