Great melodies, great songs and always well played.
Sounds similar to vintage Jayhawks but with more pop to them. Rich, soothing but upbeat! The kind of stuff you used to hear on the radio in the 70s but now only on Alan Haber's Radio Show!

Refreshing Pop With Raw Overtones.......2000-03-12

I recently picked up a copy of All Hands & The Cook on advice of a friend. Not being a big fan of "pop" music, I was skeptical. What a terrific surprise to hear a band with a nice raw edge performing very cleverly crafted songs! Maybe it's just indicative of a first album, but the missing "polish", heard on higher budget recordings, adds a whole level of honesty to this album that you don't hear much in today's pop culture. Check out "Deny The Sun" to see what I'm talking about.

For now, I think this band really has it figured out...I hope they can continue to mix intelligent music and lyrics with simplicity and honesty. I highly recommend this CD to anyone who has given up hope for meaningful raw pop.

Quality pop!.......2000-02-18

This is one of my favorite recent albums, and I'm talking in the context of the whole major-label crew. All Hands And The Cook starts off as a rocker with "Deny the Sun," but I'm hooked by the sweeter songs like "Absence of Passion." I like to hear a band that can write good music AND quality lyrics -- it never gets old that way.

Smart Pop that stirs the soul.......1999-10-15

This is a wonderful cd full of finely crafted songs in the true pop tradition. Think Costello, Crowded House, and Crenshaw and you'll get a hint of this great NYC band's sound. These are great songs that you can sing along to with lyrics that go deeper than the average pop tune. I highly recommend "All Hands and the Cook".
