Blue Collar Gold Americana.......2007-07-03
Lonesome Jubilee is my favorite Mellencamp CD. I turn it up loud and and lose myself in the Americana, the earthy every-man stories that blue collar folks can relate to immediately. John's ability to tell stories of real people that you can actually visualize is his best talent. Whenever I listen to this CD, I am struck with the emotional depth and musical expertise of every musician playing in every cut.
I wore out my first copy, so I bought another one. IF you think you don't like Mellencamp, but have never heard this one, give it a real listen. This one and Scarecrow might change your mind.
Driving.......2007-05-29
This was purchased as driving music. And it's great for my long trip to the mountains to get away for the weekends every so often.
Really enjoying it
Back to basics.......2007-05-21
John Mellencamp, once again, shows his superb writing attributes in this record. Through catchy melodies, and consistent storylines, he shows why he's the best in showing what Middle America is all about.
By far, it's his best and most mature work in his career.
Good Stuff.......2007-02-08
Solid album - not quite as good as Mellencamp's "Scarecrow" and "Human Wheels" albums...but it's hard to top perfection
His Finest Hour.......2006-07-22
Maybe 1985's 'Scarecrow' was the album that elevated John Mellencamp to superstar status in the US but 'The Lonesome Jubilee'still remains musically, his boldest album. The album features nine musicians and himself, playing no less than 23 different instruments including dobro, banjo, congas, hammer dulcimer, fiddle and penny whistle. The result is a strong, rich, textured, stylish album which gets stronger with every listen. The main themes throughout 'The Lonesome Jubilee' are the hopes and aspirations of working class, blue collar Americans, particularly in the mid-west where Mellencamp was born and lives. The album begins with the uptempo 'Paper In Fire' an uptempo brassy opener.'Down And Out In Paradise' is about the struggle of everyday life .The first single taken from the album 'Check It Out' is about the disillusionment of being a family man, 'Going to work on Monday, you got yourself a family, all the utility bills have been paid, you can't tell your best buddy that you love him' he goes on to hope that the future generations that ride on the highways that we build have a better understanding.'Cherry Bomb' is an innocent, nostalgic tale of growing up and being in love when 'holding hands meant something'.'We Are The People' is about hope and optimism in a cold world as Mellencamp sings 'if you're feeling shut down may my thoughts be with you,if you're a black man being being shoved down and kicked all around then my thoughts are with you'.'Hard Times For An Honest Man' is exactly about what the title states whereas 'Hotdogs And Hamburgers' is a tale of injustice and forgiveness.'The Lonesome Jubilee' is basically a series of short realistic tales about life, love, hardship, hope and survival. It is at times melancholic but overall it is a deep, warm, folk rock record which in my opinion John Mellencamp has never bettered.

A Music Score Benchmark.......2006-07-15
This soundtrack is one of my continuing favorites. I tell you that for film scores, this one sets the bar pretty high. Since this soundtrack was released, I have personally used this one as the benchmark test for any new stereo equipment I have purchased. The spectrum of sound included, in the second track in particular, will test the speakers of a new sound system better than many test disks that I've seen. The sound is able to pull you into your mental review of the film more effectively than most other soundtracks out there, with certain exceptions of course. This soundtrack is overall that which many scores fail to be, a musical painting of the film, not just filler music. This is a memorable disk for a memorable film.
Good sound, but themes are redundant.......2005-08-06
I enjoy this CD very much. The music has a sweeping charm and romantisicm to it. My only problem is that this score pretty much consists of two themes, the Rocketeer Theme and Jenny's theme, played over and over again. There's nothing wrong with the two themes, on the contrary they are both very enjoyable, but the CD simply needs more variety.
On a different note, the Cole Porter songs are wonderful for anyone who enjoys his music, and the singer has a sultry voice that's perfect for the selection.
Heroic images.......2004-10-16
Superman and Batman two heroes who get all the movies, toys, cartoons, etc... however with the Rocketeer we can start a new trend. Th Music by Horner fits right in with Superman by Mr. Williams and surpasses Mr. Elfman's work in Batman. on my Mix for heroes I included the Rocketeer as a tune for the golden Age Green lantern The Current GL has the Last Starfighter The Rocketeer is a thrilling adventure of the likes we just dont see any more The Music by Mr. Horner frames it and matches the spirit of it all so perfectly. you could have the worst day of your life and yet feel like a million bucks after listening to this sweeping score!
Excellent Score! One of Horner's best........2004-10-09
Since he wrote the score for Braveheart and won an Oscar for Titanic, James Horner has been among the most disappointing of film composers. His works have been highly derivative and this often makes the listener deride the composer for his lack of so-called talent. The Rocketeer proves te depth of Mr. Horner's talent. It's sweeping melodic main theme is a perfect counterpoint to the theme of flight running throughout the movie. His love theme is a classic old fashioned melody that perfectly fits with the movie and his use of the piano to subtly bring out the movie is totally fantastic. The Rocketeer is among the best of James Horner's works and is one of his most enjoyable scores. His work is truly a masterpiece. While the movie's special effects may seem dated, Horner's score is immortal and shows just how beautiful his music is when he writes original music.
The Rocketeer: Another great James Horner score.......2003-08-02
After "Krull" this is my favourite James Horner score. The main theme is brilliant and there is a good balance between action music and slow music. Some tracks contain the "suspense/bass motif" from "Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan". Horner uses this motif often in his work, I like that.
My favourite track is "The Flying Circus", a fantastic action cue. (The bass-trombone is great!!)
The track "Jenny" is very beautiful, and one of Horner's best love-themes ever.
There are also two jazzy songs on the album. I think they are very good.
If you are a fan of James Horner, or you like Star Trek II, you might enjoy this cd very much.

Customer Reviews:
Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31
This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.
When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.
This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.
Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.
Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01
I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.
How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07
Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!

A really Fine Romance.......2007-07-05
It doesn't get any better than these two playing these guys! Some of it was recorded at Abbey Road Studios. Use your imagination... It's all just swell.
A Musical Treat.......2006-01-08
"The true mission of the violin is to imitate the accents of the human voice, a noble mission that has earned for the violin the glory of being called the king of instruments." ~ Charles-Auguste De Bériot ~
Yehudi Menuhin and Stéphane Grapelli together had made some of the most beautiful music ever-recorded. And I believe that this is one of the many successful albums they recorded together. In this recording, both violinists have showed their excellent musicianship and interpretative eloquence as well, making it one of my most cherished CDs from my collection.
These are the main ingredients of a perfectly-made CD for your listening pleasure: mix violins, piano, bass and drums together, combine two terrific violinists, season with the best melodies in the 20s, 30s and 40s from Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Rodgers & Hart. Add the musical talents of Nelson Riddle, Max Harris, Martin Taylor, Eddie Tripp, Alan Clare and the rest of the studio musicians. Now all you have to do is to sit back, relax and savor these stunning melodies coming from your CD player. Listen to it in full-volume and fill your music room with the sheer beauty of these classics.
One of my favorite musical instruments is violin. With its four strings, it gives a whole wide range of musical versatility and I simply love the fascinating sound it produces.
My personal highlights are the best tunes from Jerome Kern - "The Way You Look Tonight" (Nelson Riddle arranged this particular track and conducted the Woodwind and Brass section), "A Fine Romance," "Pick Yourself Up," "Why Do I Love You?" and "All The Things You Are."
My choices from Irving Berlin's gems are - "Isn't It A Lovely Day?" featuring the great artistry of Nelson Riddle in arranging and conducting, "Cheek To Cheek" and "I've Got My Love To Keep Me Warm."
The Cole Porter repertoire represented his musical sophistication in "Night And Day," "I Get A Kick Out Of You" and "Just One Of Those Things."
The choice cuts from the talented and creative team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart are "My Funny Valentine" and "Thou Swell."
Listening to this CD is so delectable and equivalent to having my favorite dessert - be it Tiramisu, New York Cheesecake, Black Forest Cake, Chocolate Soufflé, Créme Brulee, Chocolate Mousse or Chocolate-Coated Strawberries! ;)
A musical treat.

We love this C.D.!.......2005-04-03
We received the Baby Cello C.D. as a gift, and my husband and I just love it. The music is truly moving in the most uplifting way, and the songs chosen are just beautiful; not at all stuffy. The true test was when our two-year-old, who had not had a nap all day, got completely wired and still would not go to sleep after 10 p.m. She screamed for 20 minutes as we tried to get her down, until I put Baby Cello on, and the screaming stopped instantaneously! She went to sleep to the C.D. without another wimper! We highly recommend Baby Cello for parents and babies alike, and have bought it for other parents with babies that we know. It uplifts, as well as soothes, depending upon what time of day we put it on, and it serves as wonderful dinner music as well. We can't imagine anyone not loving this C.D.! A.and J. Pieri, Albany,CA
Glorious sound.......2005-01-23
I am so pleased with Baby Cello. The sound of this music is utterly glorious. Soothing doesn't begin to describe it. My 2 year old and I love listening to it at all times of day.

Lily Wilde and the orchestra have obviously been listening to a lot of Buddy and Ella Johnson over the years. They have their horn driven r&b sound down! Lily even sounds a bit like Ella on occasion. The band stomps and swings while Lily's voice floats over the swinging rhythm section. Songs like "Mr. 5x5", the old tune about Jimmy Rushing and "work baby" by Louis Jordan sound like they were written by her. Great musicianship, great arrangements. Great record. Wish I could see them live!
Rockin' Horns!.......2006-12-14
From the first note of the first track, you know that you are in for a swingin' ride. The charts are great, and the musicians are top-drawer. If you're a horn player....you're going to be jealous that you weren't selected for this recording session!
Lovely lady, lovely music!.......2005-08-10
If you like swing, this here's the thing. Fans of Lavay Smith will be pleased with what they hear. I have been a fan of Lily's for a while before I purchased her CD. I haven't been sorry since. Wonderful music with a lot of energy. I just wish she would play the east coast more often.
Lily Wilde swings!!!.......2005-05-06
This is a wonderful cd. Great arrangements played by a fine orchestra, and of course, the vocals by Ms. Wilde are as good as it gets. The only complaint I have is that this is her only recorded work that I can find. It's that good.
Great jazz and blues big band swing!.......2004-02-13
This CD is one of those sneaky surprises waiting out there in the swing music scene. Striking out from Portland, OR, Lily Wilde has produced a phenomenal album of big band swing, perfect for listening and dancing. Backed by the full Jumpin' Jubilee Orchestra, Lily Wilde lays out a series of tracks that capture the swingin' feeling of the big bands of the 1950s, like Billy May and Count Basie. It's jazzy swing with the soul of the blues...in other words, the genuine swing article, not some rock band that just stuck on a few horns and called themselves a swing band. Lily Wilde knows her musical history and knows what she likes, and that means you're guaranteed to like it as well.
Lily Wilde's voice is supremely soulful and powerful, reminding a bit of Ella Fitzgerald and Helen Humes (one of Count Basie's best female singers), but separate enough to have her own identity. She does a great job with such swingin' classics as "Mister Five by Five," "Work Baby Work," and "Oh Babe!" (my personal favorite cut from the album). These all swing smooth and very danceable, and should get a whole room of picky swing dancers jivin' and wailin'. I also enjoy the humorous "Rip Van Winkle." Lily slows it down and gets soulful and torchy on "Since I Fell for You," (the best slow number on the album) and a beautiful version of "Stormy Weather."
The band itself swings hard in a very Basie-like style, sounding like the legendary "Atomic" band from the 50s. This is most noticeable on a stand-out, mid-tempo instrumental, "Go Ahead and Rock." It's an infectious piece.
The only flaw in the album is the one bad track among the bunch, and ironically, it's the title track, "Insect Ball." The band swings fine, but the electronic manipulation of the voices and the silly lyrics cripple it. Unfortunate -- but how often do you come across an album where every track is great?
This still counts as a five-star swing recording for me. Swing fans who haven't heard Lily Wilde need to get their hands on this gem while it is still around. It's guaranteed to get you dancing again after you've worn out all your "Swing Session" albums.

Mostly Majestic.......2007-05-17
Most of the tracks were excellent but some were a bit long winded.Tracks by Spencer Wyatt best on the disc and made it all worth while.
An excellent olio of music styles.......2007-02-23
Do you like ethereal New Age? Gotcha covered. Does Boogie piano get your toes a-tappin'? Check. Is Swing more your thing? It's here. All fine reasons to add this sound track to your music collection. As for the movie, I like to think it Carrey's best work. The man has the most expressive face in Moviedom. Regarding the story, it's set in the early Fifties during the rabid Communist scaremongering headed by Senator Joseph McCarthy. One result was the blacklisting of suspected Communists and sympathizers in liberal Hollywood, of which our protagonist Peter Appleton became a victim.
This movie is a slam dunk.......2006-10-29
To hear the roar of the crowd as the player goes in to slam dunk the basketball in the professional sports arenas, this film equals those thrills for the audience as Jim Carrey (Luke Trimble)takes us through the mind of someone that has amnesia and unwittingly becomes the hometown war hero set in 1945 period. Stars abound in this film like character actors Martin Landau and James Wittemore.Boy meets girl, they fall in love, then a twist in the plot as Peter Appleton (Jim Carrey) is accused of being a communist, similar to the Army McCarthy hearings for those old enough to remember. It all turns out like everyone wants.....Ed Lynch 10/29/06
Boogie Majestic.......2003-08-07
This soundtrack is the best soundtrack I have heard in a long time. Bringing the swing big band music was fantastic.I wish they would have included Pennsylvania 6-5000 in the soundtrack though. This by far is the best movie soundtrack next to Swing Kids. So buy this soundtrack. This is real music.
An answer for a question from Texas.......2003-02-15
Music fan from Texas, Yes both songs are there and as strange as it may sound, those where the two songs that cought my attention when I saw the movie. The one with the clarinet is called "Stranger on the shore" while the one with the piano is called "Boogie Woogie Stomp" I believe. The soundtrack as a whole is flawless and I strongly reccomend it.

This is the Sousa record for people who are serious about marches. Sousa was the greatest march composer in the history of, well, marching, and this disc includes many fresh and interesting pieces that will likely be unfamiliar, as well as a couple of favorites (including "The Liberty Bell," famous as the theme to Monty Python's Flying Circus). But by and large, this disc focuses on the less well known pieces, though there's not a dud in the lot. Sousa had a special gift for orchestration and for writing tunes with real rhythmic interest; his marches never sound dull. Frederick Fennell is the simply the best wind band conductor around, and these performances are standard- setters. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Fennell Brings Out the Best in Sousa 's Marches.......2004-02-21
This is an outstanding CD. The sound quality is very good. The instrumental balance is very good. It's interesting to compare the rather subtle difference in the percussion section performance between the two recording dates, particulalarly the cymbalist.
Sousa had an uncanny ability to score the cymbal strike at places which add significantly to the listening experience.
Hats off to Sousa, Fennell, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble
A solid Sousa album that comes up a bit short.......2003-01-26
In the 60s, Fennell and the Eastman Wind ensemble recorded a good amount of marches by Sousa, many released on this album, and the rest (as far as I know) on the album Hands Across the Sea. As many of Sousa's best marches are on that later album, this one falls a bit short of greatness -- but not my much.
Sousa knew his marches, writting something like 200 of them, and almost every one of these is a great example of how to write a good march. Indeed, The Liberty Bell and Manhatten Beach are two of my alltime favorite marches. However, being prolific often means that there will be misses, and many here, while written well, just aren't all that memorable. I'd be hard pressed to be able to identify such pieces as The Gallant Seventh, New Mexico, or the Black Horse Troop unless I had just listened to them.
Still, one has to admire the creative way Sousa sometimes put his music together. The Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company uses the song 'Aude Lang Syne' for its trio, and it fits so well that it's hard to believe he didn't write it himself. The Liberty Bell uses tubular bells in *just* the right spots that it makes an impact every time one listens. And Sabre And Spurs uses wook blocks to simulate horses, which also works great.
So overall, this is a solid album that has its ups and downs. The sound quality is great, haveing a certain amount of 'bite' that's almost impossible with digital recordings, the playing impecable, and there's plenty of variety.
The Mastery of Fennell.......2002-01-28
I've owned this CD for several years, and bought a copy recently as a Christmas gift. Frederick Fennell is a modern master of band and marches, and I own several of his recordings. What makes this CD a standout for me is the Mercury Living Presence recording and remastering method. I own over two dozen of this series because Living Presence does indeed represent a different method of producing music for the recorded media. It DOES sound more lifelike to me than conventional multimike recordings. To anyone considering purchase of this CD I'd recommend also ordering 'Screamers', the Living Presence CD of circus marches. To me this is feel-good music at its best, and terrific for listing in the car! Additionally, the Living Presence series stands out for its excellent liner notes with explanations of the Living Presence method. This CD is a keeper. Incidentally, the recipient of this CD has since gone out and bought several other Living Presence CD's after hearing this!s
MASTERFUL RENDITIONS IN GLORIOUS RECORDED SOUND.......2001-11-16
An utterly masterful set, containing many of Sousa's unjustly neglected works. (An integral recording of his complete marches is overdue by a good half-century.*) Fennell conducts with incredible verve, and the Eastman Wind Ensemble responds in kind, with immaculately tight and polished performances. The recording is demonstration-class. Sousa has never sounded better, and probably never will.
*EDIT: Actually, a nearly-complete recording of the marches has been available, as of the time of this review, for at least a good quarter-century--first on LP, now on CD: that being, a series of analog recordings by The Detroit Concert Band, led by Leonard B. Smith. Currently available from Walking Frog Records (on five CDs), the DCB/Smith collection unfortunately suffers from some serious problems--not the least of which is the highly variable and substandard quality of the recorded sound.
A Classic well preserved.......2001-09-28
This one's a Classic and the sound is remarkable considering
when it was recorded. Viva Mercury Records!
I do wish more of the familiar Sousa stuff was included.

Anchored by his Mormon Tabernacle-charged "Call of Champions" (theme of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games) and the sweeping, emotionally rich six-part title suite (originally written for Washington, D.C.'s millennium celebrations and appearing here for the first time as a complete concert piece), this rousing, unabashedly patriotic collection from John Williams seems doubly timely, given America's hunger for comforting affirmation. Those who criticize the scale of Williams's music for its lack of irony will find little here to dissuade them, save perhaps "For New York," his deft, surprisingly low-key arrangement of appropriate Leonard Bernstein themes, and the comparatively subdued harmonic/melodic sophistication of "Song for World Peace." But this is largely music of ceremony and celebration--its scale and frequently martial rhythms are a direct function of purpose and intent. The collection's notes foster the notion of Williams as America's contemporary Sousa, but that's a comparison that sells the composer woefully short. Even "Sound the Bells," a piece written for the Japanese royal wedding, eschews any efforts at ethnic "authenticity," paying its tribute in distinctly American terms. "The Mission Theme" (from NBC News) and the Coplandesque bonus track "Summon the Heroes" (from the 1996 Olympics) further underscore the iconic intent of Williams's work. Chiding this collection for lack of subtlety is like complaining that fireworks are too spectacular. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Perfectly Williams.......2006-02-25
If you want a combination of John Williams at his best and the original olympic spirit, this is a must! The album starts off with the olympic theme from the Salt Lake Winter Olympic Games and continues with the opening ceremony music. It's wonderful how Williams composes the music to describe the American evolution and history.
If you like the more fanfare-like Williams type of music and want to listen to a great album with great compositions I recommend this album to you! It really deserves 5 out of 5 stars!
Inspiring soundtrack that is vintage John Williams.......2006-01-15
I really enjoyed American Journey, as well as the other pieces John Williams composed for the 2002 Winter Olympics. When listened to all the way through, American Journey is a powerful tribute to the pioneers and explorers of America. Of the other pieces, my favorite was the Mission Theme, which features the well-known theme from NBC news with some excellent variations. The two main fanfares (Call of the Champions - 2002 Olympics, Summon the Heroes - 2000 Olympics) are the highlights of the CD, and unlike most people I actually thought Call of the Champions was better. I especially liked Williams' use of the choir and timpani in this piece.
I would recommend this CD to anyone whether they are a fan of John Williams or not.
Very impressive stuff.......2005-04-28
This really was one of William's best compositions and the performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir was inspired as well. I think when people recall these Olympics, the sounds of "Call of the Champions" provides a very memorable musical image of the games. The Boston Pops Orchestra does an impressive job as well in this very attractive CD. Wonderful music from a memorable Olympic experience.
Essential for the John Williams lover.......2003-05-11
This is not my favorite John Williams CD, because I love his film scores, and the way they are arranged and built. However, this is John Williams performing his classical and ceremonial music, and with that in mind, this is an excellent CD. The "American Journey" suite is the strongest new material on the album - I say "new material" because the last track, Summon the Heroes (1996 Olympics) is one of John Williams's greatest, most energetic pieces. "American Journey" is filled with American patriotism, feeling, and excitement (my personal favorite is the Arts & Entertainment movement). With this CD and John Williams's other Olympic music, I believe he has redefined what American classical music is.
Really makes you feel proud.......2003-02-02
John Williams scores again, proving he can do more than compose music for Superman and Star Wars. This disk is filled with simply wonderful patriotic music, upbeat, small-scale at times, always suited to the title.
It's a wonderful listen for anyone...just as fun to listen to as any other John Williams tunes like Superman and Star Wars; and this time it isn't specifically related to a movie!

Customer Reviews:
Solid Basic March Collection.......2006-08-07
Great solid basic collection, a real bargain with mostly outstanding performances. Having played several in bands and orchestras and sung one (the Rimsky Mlada), I have a good idea how they should go. As other other commentators say, there are better individual recordings, such as anything by Fennell and the Eastman band. The organ pieces just don't do this music justice, although a real cathedral organ can come close, but that's beyond these discs. The Nielsen Aladdin March is the new one for me. Berlioz by Solti is great! Buy it!
Bold and brassy mixes well with the rest.......2004-08-14
I am impressed most by the variety in 40 Famous Marches on 2 CDs, a Double Decca release. The performers include Philharmonic Orchestras, a Brass Ensemble, Chamber Orchestra, organ, Symphony, and for nine selections, the Wiener Philharmoniker. I am not sure if the word schmaltzy ought to be applied to any of this, but the Wiener Philharmoniker often exhibits a unique sound which is not quite the same as any of the other selections. The final five selections are all performed by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble under Elgar Howarth in ADD/DDD format in 1983 and 1985. Two of those five are rousing marches by John Philip Sousa, another called `Entry of the Gladiators' is typical of songs played by live bands at circuses, and the remaining two are from movie soundtracks. `Colonel Bogey' is famous from the movie about British prisoners of war building a railroad bridge for the Japanese in World War Two, the Bridge over the River Kwai.
The major source of variety in these 40 selections is that many of them are taken from operas and even a ballet, Tchaikovsky's famous `The Nutcracker--March.' I originally found this collection when I was searching for `Funeral March of a Marionette' by Charles Gounod (1818-1893) which has a theme that is famous from its use by a television series hosted by Alfred Hitchcock. If you can't remember how that goes, you ought to buy this collection and listen for it early: it is selection 4 on the first CD. The main theme was fun to play and easy to learn in a book of piano lessons, but the rest is quite whimsical and worth listening to, and people who play organ with pedal notes might still be able to find music for playing the entire arrangement, difficult though it is for someone like me, who becomes confused when too many things are going on at the same time.
There was something on this CD that sounded weird, and I had to check to see what it was, and it was just someone playing the organ, but he was trying to play `The Ruins of Athens -- Turkish March' by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827).
Something by Handel sounds so much like the beginning of a movie that I expect someone to start singing, `The hills are alive with The Sound Of Music,' but this CD is something else. The first CD starts and ends with marches from `Pomp and Circumstance' by Edward Elgar, so people who have been to a lot of graduation ceremonies will be expecting plenty of familiar music. The 6:32 time is slightly longer than the Wagner's `Tannhauser -- Grand March' on the first CD, but long graduation ceremonies may play it even longer, until all the diplomas are handed out.
Verdi, Strauss, Schubert, Prokofiev, Berlioz, these famous composers might be recognized by people who know music, but the `Wedding March' by Felix Mendelssohn is famous with everybody for what it is used for. If you haven't heard it lately, maybe you should hear it a few times so you won't be so nervous the next time it comes around.
40 Famous Marches - a great collection!!.......2003-11-21
This is a wonderful collection. What a wide collection of exciting pieces, all in one affordable package!! It encompasses so many composers and styles, from the majesty of Elgar and Walton, to upbeat Sousa to schmaltzy Strauss. It also includes such classic marches as Meyerbeer's Coronation, a pinnacle of the French opera style, the timeless Wedding March of Mendelssohn, and the brilliant organ piece, Marche Triomphale of Sigfrid Karg-Elert. There are also some interesting oddball selections like the mysterious Things to Come of Bliss (composed for the H.G. Wells film), the jaunty Chabrier marche, and oriental flair of Nielsen's Aladdin.
In reading some of the other criticisms, it is true that the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble perhaps is not the best or most noted ensemble. However, overall, the pieces they play are either Sousa or patriotic-sounding tunes. Their only forays into the true classical realm are the Grand Marches from Tannhauser and Aida, and they are not half bad. So don't let those pieces keep you from buying the CD - 1) because most of the songs they do play are great and 2) they only play in 1/4 of the music....
Classics on Parade.......2003-05-01
If you're looking for a collection of marches from classical music, this would be a fine one to get.
It contains recordings made from 1958 to 1996 by some of the world's great orchestras, plus several numbers by the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble, and four arranged for organ.
The first 35 marches include many of the best-known classical marches, plus three "coronation" marches, written as far back as the end of the seventeenth century (The Prince of Denmark's March) up to 1954 (The Dam Busters). The last five pieces are "popular" marches played by the Jones Ensemble.
The liner notes give a nice history of marches, including where most of the ones in this collection fit into that scenario.
A great collection of marches by classical and popular music "masters".
Too, too much Philip Jones Ensemble.......2003-04-17
A mixed bag of music, 40 FAMOUS MARCHES compiles a good many marches - some not too common.
The CD has it's high points:
1. Chicago Symphony (under Solti!) playing Berlioz's Hungarian March (love that trombone excerpt - BAM!)
2. London Philharmonic playing Prokofiev's "The Love for Three Oranges" March
3. Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance No. 1 (also London Philharmonic)
BUT... There's some real stuff on here, too. I must concur with a prior reviewer: FAR TOO MUCH Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. Case in point - Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever, as played by PJBE is completely devoid of the energy and fire it needs. The trombone countermelody at the end is just NOT THERE (you'll strain to hear it). There's just no way this is right. PBJE is great in their setting, but this is just not it.
Overall, this CD might be a good compilation for the novice listener, but I would recommend the more experienced (or trombonists, like myself) purchase works by individual symphonies that include the music you desire - a more expensive, yet more expressive alternative.
