As these two boys from Brisbane, Australia, know, it doesn't hurt to be endorsed by Rosie O'Donnell. When the Queen of Nice sang the words to "I Want You" and the praises of the duo behind it, the song catapulted up the charts. Largely ignored by the serious music press, Savage Garden have cultivated a vast fan base on the strength of their music--and airplay--alone. As formulaic as it may appear, the ballad "Truly Madly Deeply" was lodged at No. 1 for week after week for a reason--it's damn catchy and a welcome reprieve from overdone rock ballads. Lead singer Darren Hayes lends the same yearning vocal style to the third--and best--single from the album, "To the Moon & Back," a slice of synth-pop genius that culminates in a dramatic crescendo of strings, courtesy of coleader Daniel Jones. --Rebecca Wallwork

5 out of 5 stars Music to love to.......2007-05-13

Nostalgia got me one afternoon and I had to listen to the songs I use to listen to when I was younger. I used to swoon at the sound of Darren Hayes' voice and suddenly craved that sound again. I'd given my CD to a friend as a gift though, so I had to buy it again. I'm so glad I did.

The debut album of Savage Garden is by far their best. From "I Want You", a great song to dance to, to "Tears of Pearls" a song that may pull on your heart strings. They cover every emotion and pull some new ones from you.

If you haven't heard this CD yet, you need to.

5 out of 5 stars best band ever.......2006-10-03

I love both albums from Savage Garden. They are definitely my favourite group ever. Now I can only listen to their songs. I don't think I could go back to *NSYNC or Backstreet Boys. Savage Garden were always on the radio in Australia (I'm from Australia) and on TV. I think Daniel Jones is so talented (and HOT!!) and Darren Hayes' voice is just so amazing. I love how their songs have a deep meaning and are not just some jingle. My absolute favourite song from this album is "To The Moon And Back" because it's so catchy and my other favourites are "Break Me Shake Me" "I Want You" "Truly Madly Deeply" and "Santa Monica". Put all their albums in your shopping cart NOW!!!

5 out of 5 stars awesome band.......2006-10-03

i think Savage Garden are the best band ever. I would rather listen to them than Backstreet Boys or *NSYNC anyday. Daniel Jones is so hot and can play every instrument imaginable... and Darren Hayes' voice is heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Yes........2006-04-09

Savage Garden is just about the greatest pop band ever, and that's all you need to know. They are a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars HIGH SCHOOL ALBUM.......2006-02-02

This band could have been so MEGABIG right now if they hadn't disbanded. The lead singer Darren has a voice that is hauntingly angelic and the songs they sang was a mix of alternative/r&b/pop/rock/dance...such a great group. I bought this CD because I had heard three of their singles and they all were phenomenal. Buy this CD if you must because it is definitely not a bore. It is great for those high school events like the Senior Prom (Truly Madly Deeply and Universe), the Halloween dance (To the Moon and Back, I Want You, Carry On Dancing), and your first date and kiss (Santa Monica), hee-hee.
I miss this group. I wish that they could have stayed together for long because their second album was also a total smash like this one. Something about Darren's vocals, the instruments, their look, the lyrics, and their aura is compelling. Even now that I am older and experienced, I would slip into nostalgia and think about the good ol' days when music wasn't so angry and competitive and recyclable. Buy this CD because it is the debut of the ones that may have influenced Hoobastank, Coldplay, and Maroon 5. Cheerios!

While most of their teen peers were embracing nascent '70s U.K. punk with all the snotty 'tude they could muster, Sheffield's Def Leppard instead infused then-moribund metal with bracing pop smarts. Having long since sold a gazillion or two records with that formula, the '80s superstars pay homage to the eclectic, chart-savvy tastes that spawned it on this collection of covers, recharging their contemporary fortunes a bit in the bargain. Their takes on Me Decade standards like The Faces' "Stay With Me," Badfinger's "No Matter What," and T Rex's "20th Century Boy" may be arguably too faithful, right down to Joe Elliot's often dead-on vocal chameleon routine. But elsewhere they perform some admirable pop archaeology, imparting a darker edge to David Essex's spooky "Rock On" and pumping Blondie's "Hanging on the Telephone," one-hit-wonder John Kongos's riff-fest "He's Gonna Step On You Again," and Sweet's "Hell Raiser" full of patent Lep energy. --Jerry McCulley

Album Description

On their highly anticipated new album, Def Leppard have created a heartfelt and hard rocking tribute to their musical heroes of the late 60's and 70's - the Kinks, Badfinger, T. Rex, David Bowie, Sweet, Roxy Music, Mott the Hoople, Free, Faces, and Thin Lizzy. Recording essential versions of the music that influenced their youth, the band have brilliantly merged the 'Now with the 'Then' to create a buzz that can only be summed up in one word: YEAH!

Def Leppard does cover album. Not a bad album. The cover songs are done tastefully. If you like Def Leppard you'll like this album

5 out of 5 stars Rock Gods did it once again!.......2007-07-08

Anything Def Leppard touches turns to gold.
Joe Elliot's vocals are over the top on this cd. The melodic guitars from Phil and Viv have a delightful cutting edge. Sav on Bass... What more could I say? He is a genius! Rick allen is a God himself.
Their vocal styles blend and carry each tune to higher lofts than ever before imagined. What I found most stunning.... Phil's voice on lead vocals for "Stay with me". Even my 14 year loves this CD! it rates up there with her fixation of My Chemical Romance.
I have yet to hear a bad Def Leppard song! Each cover tune they do, They leppardize it!
A loyal Leppard Fan from 1981!!!!

1 out of 5 stars Another Turkey from Def Leppard.......2007-06-26

1.5 stars

In theory, a Def Leppard album covering classic songs from the 1970s should be great, in reality; however, it is not so great.

After a string a mediocre to horrible albums that went nowhere (with the exception of 1996's underrated "Slang") Def Leppard shows the world their roots--where they came from and what influenced them with their covers albums "Yeah!" (2006).

You can't argue with the band's choices--Blondie, Bowie, T-Rex, ELO, Roxy Music, etc. It's all good stuff. The problem with "Yeah!" isn't a lack of good songs; rather the problem lies with Def Leppard themselves and their execution of the songs.

Def Leppard used to be a great band, no denying that. Their first four albums, specifically "High N' Dry" (1982) and "Pyromania" (1983) are two of the greatest hard-rock albums of the 1980s. That said, Def Leppard have sucked for years. "Slang" and the "Retroactive" (1993) compilation album aside, everything the band has released since the death of Steve Clarke has ranged from mediocre (1992's Adrenalize, 1999's "Euphoria") to downright horrid (2002's atrocious "X"). In short, it's been a long time since Def Leppard knew how to rock and they have long since lost their balls. So even when Def Leppard tries to cover rocking songs, they can't, they just don't know how.

If Def Leppard had released the same collection of songs on a covers album twenty-five years ago, (when they had Pete Willis and Steve Clarke on guitar) it would have been great. Now, however, it just sounds weak. As previously noted, the band no longer has any balls; the performance of the songs on this album is too smooth, with no sense of urgency, no teeth, no rock n' roll spirit. Most of the time the songs sound either forced, i.e., Sweet's "Hell Raiser" or too sugary, i.e., The Kinks "Waterloo Sunset." This album sounds like a bunch of over-the-hill rockers trying to sound vigorous and it just doesn't work. "Yeah!" is an album for soccer moms and Bryan Adams fans, not for people who wanna rock.

There are some decent moments on "Yeah!" Blondie's "Hanging on the Telephone," ELO's "10538 Overture" and Badfinger's "No Matter What" aren't bad, although not as good as the originals. Everything else on this album is totally lame.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY, a complete review of .......2007-05-09

OK, first off, been a fan of the Leps since I was 15 and "Pyromania" was first released and "Bringin' On The Heartbreak" was all over MTV...twas 1983 and my impressionable mind was molded by the Leps music, just like what happened to the Leps themselves with the bands and who's songs the Leps cover all over "Yeah!!"

This record makes a whole lot of sense and squashes many things that people mistakenly think the Leps are, musically. NWOBHM or pop-metal??!!?? BAH!!

Try glam-influenced powerpop, or a British, glam-influenced Cheap Trick, and you're on target. And honestly, I think it's a mistake that the Leps are constantly on nostalgic summer package tours with horrible corporate rock bands like Journey...shoot me, Journey fans, I don't care, your band and taste is terrible!!! Same with KISS!!! If anything, the Leps should play with musically-compatible bands like Cheap Trick, or newer Britpop bands like the Arctic Monkeys or the Kaiser Chiefs or great new Scottish bands like the View or the Fratellis, to show these younger bands and fans they are still vital...not just for their parents' generation. Gosh, I feel old.

Anyhoo, about the Leps' recent covers album, "Yeah!!!", from 2006, it's possibly the best covers album in recent memory, if not EVER. It's totally fun, not obvious, has many of my fave bands and shows the band's impeccable taste and ability to rock out and have a good time...it probably made the band feel like kids again. The album artwork and nods to the classics is a nice fun touch...the liner notes are informative and infectiously written by Phil and Joe, both obviously music connosseurs and collectors. The intros by Sav and Viv are cool as well.

Now, there are 4 different versions of the album...the regular 14-tracker, the BestBuy version with 2 bonus tracks, the Target edition with 2 completely DIFFERENT bonus tracks, and the Japanese edition has 2 bonus tracks. PLUS Walmart had a separately-sold companion bonus DISC with 8 more tracks (5 additional covers and 3 interviews) which put the whole project into proper perspective. The Japanese disc has only 2 of these Walmart tracks as bonuses. Here's my take on the whole kitten caboodle:

REGULAR ALBUM:
1- "20th Century Boy"...the T-Rex song, an amazing song and great energetic cover...fits the Leps to a T.
2- "Rock On"...the David Essex song, also covered by Michael Damian (a #1 hit in the US but it was lame) and Toni Basil!?!?...her version was cool and on the US version of "Word Of Mouth" following "Mickey"...the Leps cover beats them all...love the way the song kicks in, AC/DC-style.
3- "Hanging On The Telephone"...the 1976 Nerves powerpop classic popularized by Blondie...surprisingly awesome.
4- "Waterloo Sunset"...the 1960s Kinks classic, originally placed on the Leps 2CD import "Best Of", in a better home here on "Yeah!!", great version that grows on you.
5- "Hell Raiser"...the Sweet classic...I know the Leps have cited Sweet as an influence, and they give a kicking rendition here...the funny, campy Steve Priest vocal lines are done here by, NOT Joe Elliot, but guest Justin Hawkins, former lead singer/songwriter of campy Brit hardrockers the Darkness, to fine fun effect...
6- "10538 Overture"...ELO's debut single, when Roy Wood was in the band, after the Move split up...GREAT and a surprisingly fitting choice for the Leps...great guitar work, and features guests on strings, the Stepaside Symphonia...
7- "Street Life"...the 1973 Roxy Music classic...shows the Leps are NOT a pop metal band, but a glam-influenced powerpop band, more taken by punk and new wave, as 1970s UK glam was the precursor to this inferior style of rock, and the Leps do some nice noise on their guitars...LOVE this song...
8- "Drive-In Saturday"...the obscure-in-the-US, HUGE-in-the-UK David Bowie classic from 1973's "Aladdin Sane"...see my take on previous song by Roxy Music.
9- "Little Bit Of Love"...the Free song, a big surprise for me, as I am NOT a Paul Rodgers/Bad Company fan at all...I think BC was probably the most overrated band of them all, really boring actually. Free, on the other hand, I have not heard much of, besides "All Right Now", which was decent but played out, yet still better than all of Bad Company combined. Perhaps, Paul Rodgers sounded great in this band, I don't know, but this song is actually a pretty good pop tune...I may have to investigate Free's catalogue now.
10- "The Golden Age Of Rock 'N' Roll"...the Mott The Hoople classic...probably my fave track on all of "Yeah!!"...just amazing, what rock & roll is all about...Ian Hunter is just swell, as a rock & roller, as a songwriter and as a person...I had the opportunity to see Ian live recently and he blew me away...pictures I took, I gave doubles to Joe himself when I met him at the aftershow party for the NYC "X" club gig at Irving Plaza, now the Fillmore, because I knew Ian was Joe's hero. Ian does the intro here...very cool...and features guests like Joe's wife on BV's, Viv's bro on honking sax and Canadian singer/songwriter Emm Gryner on BVs and piano...just awesome...and I can hear the Sex Pistols influence here too, as is mentioned in the liner notes.
11- "No Matter What"...the Badfinger powerpop classic...arguably the first ever true powerpop song, let alone hit, and yeah, the Leps' version is almost identical, which proves that the Leps are, at heart, a powerpop band, not a metal/pop metal band. Love this remix better than the version on the US 2CD "Rock Of Ages" collection...fits better here too, as this is, after all, an album of covers.
12- "He's Gonna Step On You Again"...the John Kongos classic...honestly, I thought I was the only one who knew who John Kongos was!!! I had the original album with this song, and "Tokoloshe Man", on it...both songs were covered by UK rave rockers Happy Mondays in the early 90s...the band recently reunited as well...turns out the Leps, espesh Joe, were big fans as well...possibly because of the "jungle drums"...great track.
13- "Don't Believe A Word"...the Thin Lizzy song...see my entry for the Sweet cover...I knew Phil Lynott was a big influence on the Leps as well, and this is a great song...I'm also happy they didn't do one of the obvious songs either...here or on the whole album really...
14- "Stay With Me"...the Faces song...featuring PHIL on lead vocals and Joe on Ian McLagen-ish keyboards...it kicks arse, nuff said...the Faces were the only time Rod Stewart was any good, and I do agree with Joe that "Pool Hall Richard" was their best song.

Now, the bonus tracks:
Target's CD:
15- "Action" (Live, 2005)...the Sweet song, and the studio version was a B-side and on 1993's "Retroactive" compilation...GREAT live version with lots of exuberant energy...being it's a live track, not studio, nothing has been recycled, and it's from the recent 2005 US Rock Of Ages tour.
16- "When I'm Dead And Gone"...an obscure 1970 UK hit by British duo McGUINNESS FLINT, written by Benny Gallagher and Graham Lyle. Before getting this CD, I had never heard this song or of the act before, but this cover is totally charming, a memorable and melodic, scruffy, acoustic, singalong, off-the-cuff track...a true gem with no pretentions whatsoever.

BestBuy's CD:
17- "No Matter What" (Live, 2005)...a cool live take of the Badfinger classic, probably from the same show, definitely the same 2005 US tour as the Leps cover of "Action".
18- "Winter Song"...another 1970 obscurity by UK band LINDISFARNE...like the McGuinness Flint song, I had never heard of this either, but it's equally as good, and makes me want to investigate further. The song is more reflective and is a moving Christmas-y type of song, not unlike something Cat Stevens would do...done acoustic style by the Leps...

WalMart CD:
19- "American Girl"...the Tom Petty classic...proves again how the Leps are more powerpop than metal...Joe sounds a bit like Tom here as well, and his jangly Byrds-y style fits the Leps much better than you would think...one of 2 bonus tracks on the Japanese edition of "Yeah!!"...
20- Backstage Interview #1...the band talks about the 2005 tour and their fanbase evolving & getting older.
21- "Search & Destroy"...the Iggy & The Stooges dangerous punk prototype from 1973's Bowie-produced landmark "Raw Power" album...with PHIL singing lead and playing all instruments...just proves that Phil comes from the punk world, whilst the rest of the Leps were from the glam and powerpop world...this track sounds like the Stooges themselves and Phil like Iggy that it's uncanny...it sounds vital and dangerous...this track is the second of 2 bonus tracks on the Japanese "Yeah!!"...
22- Backstage Interview #2...sums up the purpose of "Yeah!!", their inspirations, the rules for picking the tracks, and it shows how the Leps are more glam/powerpop than pop-metal...
23- "Space Oddity"...the second Bowie cover, done completely by Joe...shows how talented he really is as a 1-man band...doesn't sound far from the original at all, from the playing and arrangement to the atmosphere...pretty remarkable actually...
24- Backstage Interview #3...a conclusion to a swell interview...
25- "Dear Friends"...an obscure Queen song written by Brian May (whom I met in JFK airport in 2003, BTW, totally nice gracious guy), from Queen's 1974 debut album...sung and played completely by bassist Rick Savage...shows how talented and overlooked he is in the Def Leppard canon...the guy's a great singer in his own right and a talented multi-instrumentalist as well...who knew???
26- "Heartbeat"...an obscure 1974 song by [...] UK glamster JOBRIATH BOONE, who was always referred to as a poor man's David Bowie. Apparently, Morrissey was a huge Joby fan, that he reissued an album (or a compilation, I'm not sure) called "Jobraith" on his reactivated Attack label through Sanctuary. The guy died of AIDS in 1993 in NYC, depressed and broke...maybe he will get his due, I'm not sure, but Joe was apparently a fan...enough that he covered "Heartbeat", playing fairground organ and backed by Dave Browne on piano and Ronan McHugh on cellos...this cover is quite moving, maybe moreso that Joby died of AIDS...

Anyhoo, overall, possibly the best covers album ever recorded...now that Def Leppard got this long-gestating album out of their system...they've been wanting to do a covers album or their take on Bowie's "Pin-Ups"...since they got a record deal back in 1979, or at least Joe did...now, they can do a kickbutt album of new Lep originals...I heard the next album will be sort-of like "Back In Black"...

I think the band is revitalized...just like the Smithereens are after doing their recent cover album of the Beatles debut, "Meet The Smithereens"...that's what covers albums actually do when done right...they refresh the band and remind them of why they became a band in the first place...that's what happened with Def Leppard and "Yeah!!", but what makes this covers album better than most is that it's not just a footnote curio...it's a fun, rocking record that will be listened to many times in the future, as it stands up against the rest of Def Leppard's catalogue...

It will also remind people of what rock & roll is all about, period.

'Nuff said, I'm done.

2 out of 5 stars Not Rockin.......2007-03-10

Man, i was disappointed! Ive been a Lep fan for ages, i got all their cd's, and have to say this is their worst! This album should of been an addition to their new release! Then it would be okay, but for a new album? no way, this sucks, this aint def leppard.

3 out of 5 stars not thrilled with the album.......2007-01-03

My husband and I are huge Savage Garden fans. We were both disappointed with this album. It seems like towards the end of the CD they were just trying to fill in space. It is ashame because there were so many other wonderful songs they created that did not appear on the album. I would reccomend buying the original CD's separately, get more for your money that way.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but not a Best of.......2006-12-06

I have to agree that this could have been better due to certain track choices. And instead of having the dvd they could have input another cd and had a complete library of Savage Garden songs including all the B-sides the two Darren Hayes songs on this cd and the never released in America song "Mine" which I have to say is one of their best.

All in all I don't regret getting it, but it could have better.

after 6 years apart, the best of savage garden cd has finally been released & i am happy to have a copy of my own. the album definetly does not disappoint except songs such as "gunning down romance", "two beds & a coffee machine", "i don't know you anymore", "carry on dancing", "universe" and "mine" which were great songs could have been on there. the two songs by darren hayes were awesome and better than ever. my fav. song would have to be "i knew i loved you". Fantastic album overall

4 out of 5 stars If only it had Tears of Pearls!!!.......2006-03-16

Savage Garden is, without a doubt, a band that left behind music that has lived on though they split up. And this is one of the first times I find such a complete compilation for any artist... though that's easy to accomplish when you only have two discs under your sleeve.

Nevertheless, they were both two great discs and the best of them has been brought over to these new album, spotless... the only thing that holds me back from giving this a 5 rating, is the fact that it misses my favorite Savage Garden song: Tears of Pearls, from the first record...

Still, it's forgivable: even though the song was good, it wasn't that much of a hit as other that are included...

A must have if you don't have the originals and are interested in Savage Garden music.

Savage Garden's songs are of innocence and urgency. On the Australian pop duo's second album, Affirmation, love is either a broken thing or a newly exploding one, passion and obsession taking over after a spin on the dance floor. At the same time, when Darren Hayes and Daniel Jones proclaim that they want to "live like animals," they're not planning anything too raw, too Reznorish: they just want that childlike lack of guile. This approach, taken with a total lack of irony and with large doses of appealing melodicism, led to multiplatinum sales for the act's debut, and there's no reason to think that Affirmation won't be similarly accepted. Sometimes a bit too goodhearted for its own good--the title track's wide-eyed sentiments might make even Stuart Smalley smirk--the disc's best moments are hard to dislike when taken on their own terms. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars Savage Garden Music.......2007-07-04

The CD Affirmation is as good as the reviews I read. I am very glad I purchased it. I really did not realize how many good songs were on it.

5 out of 5 stars Savage Garden at their best....and their last.......2007-06-01

This is such a great album. There's not one dud song on it. The only one that doesn't stand up as strongly as the others is Gunning Down Romance, but all the other tracks could easily have been released as singles. Savage Garden were the best thing to come out of Australia in a while. It's so sad they broke up after only two albums. They could've gone on to do so much more. Unfortunately Darren Hayes's solo efforts never came up to par although I was hoping that he would be the 'continuance' of Savage Garden. The songs are just bland pop, even though he does have a great voice. It would seem he needs Daniel to write a good song. Plus I'm still peeved at Darren for being gay. How dare he mess with our psyches making us think he liked girls! But anyway, I digress...Affirmation is pop at its best.

5 out of 5 stars the last album..........2006-10-03

This album is nearly as good as their first but nothing will beat their debut. My absolute favourites are "Affirmation" coz it's catchy and I LOVE Darren's voice in this; he sounds so good, "Crash and Burn" A slow, sad song but the lyrics are beautiful, "Hold Me" A pop song, catchy and upbeat. I like the others as well like "I Knew I Loved You" (like "Truly, Madly, Deeply") "Chained to You" catchy and upbeat and "The Best Thing", which is a lot like "Chained to You" Also, Daniel is really good in this album, he can play every instrument beautifully. Plus he's hot!

3 out of 5 stars Nice But Sort of Dull..........2006-07-11

I fell in love with Savage Garden's debut a long time back, and still have the c.d. to this day. I really enjoyed their sound and the beautiful songs they made including To The Moon and Back and Carry on Dancing.
I heard a little while ago Crash and Burn and I Knew I Loved You off their sophmore album on the radio and always wanted to get around to buying it. I finally found it at a bargin store and decided it was none better time to finally get it. I bought the album just on the love I held for their debut album.

Well the album is a bit of a disappointment. It does not hold the same power as their debut, nor as many memorable songs. The whole album Affirmation gives off a very "meh" kind of feeling for me. A lot of the songs sound nice to listen to, but there's not a lot there to really be exicted about.

The strongest songs on here are I Knew I Loved You, Crash and Burn, The Lover After Me, The Best Thing, and You can Still be Free (which is probably the most amazing song on here). Affirmation can get kind of annoying but it sounds all right. Those are the songs I usually turn to when I put this album in. A lot of the other songs on this album I do not play nearly as much- although I don't hate any of the songs. They just are sort of boring compared to the ones I mentioned.

When I recommend Savage Garden to anyone though, I do recommend their debut instead.

3.5/ 5

Amazing stuff, right here. Affirmation is just as wonderful and catchy as their first album. Hooray for Savage Garden.

5 out of 5 stars Martini Mood Music!.......2007-01-10

An excellent genre-creating album from the '50s before rock n roll came crashing. Really takes me back. Back where? How should I know? I was born in 1966! I was listening to Rubber Soul and Revolver in the womb! What I mean is this record conjures a mood as well or better than any of the exotica, ez, space-pop or swinger hep-cat sounds of the era. Martin Denny was my gateway to finding this great stuff...

5 out of 5 stars Ground zero album for exotica along with wordless vocal masterpiece that makes Pink Floyd's "Great Gig In The Sky" seem tame.......2006-08-03

It is my hope that all of Les Baxter's exotica albums will soon have made it to CD, and this hope is becoming a bit more of a reality, thanks to the release of these two great pieces of impressionist mood music from the master himself.

Martin Denny may have had the minor Top 40 hit with 1959's "Quiet Village", but I still prefer the original, complete with lush orchestral strings and a myriad of percussion instruments, as is featured as easily the most famous and recognizable selection off of the first true exotica album, 1951's "Ritual of the Savages". Much of the album will remind anyone over 50 of the soundtracks of old movies set in tropical locales, such as "The African Queen", "Hurricane", "Drums of Tahiti", "King Solomon's Mines", or any number of Tarzan films.

The daughter of a wealthy and prominent Jewish family in Philadelphia, Beatrice Kurzman studied voice with the intent of honoring her family's wishes that she become a cantor. However, she veered off that course and into popular music, but adapted the stage name of Bas Sheva ("Bathsheba") to attempt to at least meet her family's wishes half-way. After performing in the Jewish resorts of the New York Catskill Mountain "Borscht Belt" in the early 1950's, in 1953, she recorded, in a brash, brassy and somewhat untraditional way, an album of traditional Jewish songs on Capitol Records, the long out-of-print "Soul Of A People".

Her powerful and unique voice caught the attention of fellow Capitol labelmate Baxter, who made her the voice of woman in his 1954 tone poem "The Passions". While I have always preferred Baxter's true exotica albums over this one, it still is a very interesting and unusual album. I love wordless vocals and this is something Les Baxter also uses to good effect on his mostly instrumental exotica releases. Sheva shows a true dynamic range on this album with "Lust" being an especially good cut, featuring Sheva at her most sensual, with sounds almost simulating orgasm. I would have liked to have seen the look on her parents' faces when they heard this album.

This and "Soul Of A People" are the only known recordings Bas Sheva ever made. She returned to live entertaining and died of diabetic shock while performing on a cruise ship off the coast of South Carolina in 1960. She was only 34.

4 out of 5 stars love the beats, not the lyrical content.......2007-01-11

Ill tell you this right now I will never be down with calling women Bi*ch or hoe. But The beats are just plain raw. If u have a special sound system in your car I would certainly consider the amended version. Word of advice for Webstar(webbie), have more respect for women and keep up the good beats.

1 out of 5 stars You'd think somebody whose real name is Webster would have opened a dictionary at least once........2006-06-06

This is absolute [...]. It's so bad its funny. In the big picture it's very sad that the great music of hip hop has sunk this low. He has no talent whatsoever. All he does is rhyme swears with the same swear, and when the words rhyme it's so basic. All of this is with a horrible flow and a [...]voice. Not that it matters but its worth mentioning hes ugly as hell. His lyrics are of a 3rd grader who learned a ton of profanities early on. All he says every song is the same damn thing. He has absolutely nothing to say except bling hoes and how savage his life is (sarcasm). What ever happened to the days of Ready To Die, Illmatic, Reasonable Doubt, and The Don Killuminati The 7 day theory just to name a few. If you are a true rap fan you will not buy this crap because you actually can figure out that it sucks. Meaning you're not an idiotic teenager who thinks theyre [...]by blasting this in their car who cant see the absolute lack of talent. A person who doesnt rap could easily outdo this album that's how bad it is. This is the opposite of what rap was supposed to be. I hate the rappers that just sell out and pump out horrible tracks really fast to get rich and don't care about the music. I really hope somebody can save the desolated wasteland of the hip hop industry. I'm a local rapper so I will end this review with my own rap which annihilates anything Webbie has or ever will make.

Fake mcs must pick up a dictionary your lack of vocabulary makes me laugh hysterically even a lobotomy cannot save a feeble mind rap bout more the nines you don't own you currency and the number a hoes you take home and attempt to act fully grown be legit not ignorant is my motto consider what effect today has on tomorrow there is no higher form of ignorance than a closed mind blind to the oppositions it will find I infiltrate your mind state to create vivid visions otherwise unobtainable incisions inflicted when your escalades in collision while still in ignition because your brain is less advanced than intellivision

1 out of 5 stars Trash, trash, and more trash..........2006-05-17

Now I usually don't give something one star because for me to give something one star it has to REALLY suck. Heck, this is only my second review. But Webbie manages to hit rock bottom with the release of his album Savage Life. And for that matter I don't think you can live to be 18 like he says he is long enough to live a life like that.

But back to the album, you can really tell that Webbie's vocabulary skills are really limited with his constant usage of the b-word and the s-word in almost every bar he uses and his hooks. Song titles don't get creative here with "G-S**t", "Gutta B", and the disgusting "Bad B". And as if that song wasnt already bad enough he does a remix with Trina (now that sounds like a winning formula?).

Webbie is definatley describing himself on the song "Retarded", why anyone would make a song like that song is beyond me. And "Gotta Show Me U Worth It" is a phrase I'm definatley going to.

So there has to be a bright spot here right? Well I havent even mentioned his single, "Give Me That", but trust me it's not good because of Webbie. Bun-B is featured in it and he manages to shine nicely without the filthy mouth. For that matter his verse is the only thing worth listening to on this whole CD if you havent thrown it out the window by now.

1 out of 5 stars Oh!!!!! it hurts please stop!.......2006-05-04

Now you see from the title I am actually polite in saying "please stop". This is ridiculous. Where did webster come from and someone please slap the clown that gave him a record deal. This is another example of superficial subject matter, poor rhymes and perfectly wasted beats. Webbie please wrap your hands around your own neck and choke yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Raw..........2006-04-07

At first. I was a little judgemental: put off by the subject matter and what not. You know, the grown and sexy era is "In", the gangsta era is out. But as time went on, I couldn't seem to take this disc out of my player, feel me? This album is raw. There are atleast seven classics on this album - for real - that grow on you like moss on a willow tree. You gotta be careful with "You Don't Want That", "Retarded", "I Got That", "Crank It Up", "Like That", and "How You Ridin'".... Cause you either gon' crash your car or kill somebody with the spirit they envoke. "Gimme That"? Sh__, you heard the song, right?? You damn near might catch a sexual harassment case. Straight fire (its music that makes you want to do something). The rest of the album isn't bad either. Based on those seven songs, I would give it a 5(for rawness, style, and quality). The rest of them album? 3s and 4s all day. Maybe one 2 in there. Overall, this is one of the better albums of '05, and had this Cali Fella jiggin' all summer.

1 out of 5 stars Buy this for one song.......2006-08-07

I don't get it! This guy's a guitar player but this is hardly a guitarnut work. Too much synthesizer and fake drums.

With the exception of the Kill Bill song (which is done 3 times here!) there is nothing worth repeated listening. The Immigrant Song cover is interesting but, in reality, it is a techno version of an otherwise classic song.

This scd is like movie soundtrack music. If you are a rock and roller or if you are looking for music similar to the Kill Bill song, you will be misled.

The artist is a guitar player using his musicianship to play very unguitar sounding music. This is for the dance music crowd!

5 out of 5 stars Hotei Tomoyasu.......2006-03-03

Hotei Tomoyasu was a member of Boowy which was the most
famous japanese rock and roll band.

Himuro Kyousuke was the leader of Boowy.

Hotei mainly wrote musics of Boowy.
He is very tall man and good at electric guitar(Search at YouTube
if you have an interest).
He played his electric guitar music at Olympic opening before.

He wrote one of musics used in "Kill Bill".
Do you know that?

5 out of 5 stars Electric Samurai.......2006-02-17

Very Good guitar with an Euro-Japanese ultra modern mix.

Way cool music. I actually use it to develop tempo for my golf swing...particularly the Kill Bill arrangement for "Without Honor or Humanity."

5 out of 5 stars Holy crap this rocks!.......2005-12-20

This is one of the few albums where the term 'bad-ass' just isn't enough. This album is well worth it's cost for the title song along (Battle Without Honor Or Humanity (Kill-Bill theme)), except every song is nearly as good!

Imagine Rob Zombie doing the Immigrant Song. Yes. Seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Great music - but watch out for the malware.......2005-11-18

Others have already commented on the music adequately, but there's something else on this album that you need to know about.

This is one of the now infamous Sony Rootkit albums. If you stick it in a PC it will attempt to autorun an installation which will hide many files from users and will add code that intercepts certain system calls and loads down the machine. Even worse the rootkit has been exploited by virus writers.

As of mid November 2005 (this week) Microsoft has declared this rootkit to be Malware and their anti spyware software will remove it whenever it encounters it.

There is a very small warning on the back of the box, a second warning says that on normal players, which can't install their malicious software, the disk may not play. Search for Sony, BMG and Malware to confirm the nature of this exploit.

Sorry, but say what you want, but you are just not objective if you think this album is terrible. Macho Man is an old white guy, and a great entertainer/personality-- SNAP INTO IT! He is in his fifties, for Chrissakes! How many white guys cut a debut rap album in their fifties? How people in general at that age? All the great rappers honed their skills on the streets over years. This guy honed his personlaity over time, obviously, but none of the big stars cut an album with no rap experience. I am sure somebody wrote or co-wrote all the lyrics and the production is obviously weak. If somebody wrote him better lyrics, it could be much better--His delivery is not awful. Not really all that different than DMX or House of Pain sometimes. Remember he is an old white guy---he played minor league baseball in the Cardinals system. He was teammates with Keith Hernandez in 1971, Heranadez retired years ago--all he's done is a few eps of Seinfeld and some announcing. Dig it!

5 out of 5 stars greatest album ever.......2006-08-16

This album was not created by a mere mortal. This album was made by God himself, and handed down to the greatest rapper of our time, Randy Savage. Macho Man shows range that the written word just doesnt do justice. If this album doesnt go platinum 10 times over than the greatest tragedy of our generation has occured. Move over Sgt. Pepper, the greatest album ever is ready to take its throne.
