Album Description
"And the Battle Begun" is the RX BANDITS' 5th full length. "It's really quite impressive as to just how much this band has progressed and evolved throughout the years with each release. Originally starting out as a practical ska band with a heavy SoCal influence, they have created a sound combining soul, reggae, punk, and progressive rock. With their new release And the Battle Begun the Bandits have scaled back a bit from the more hard rock approach featured on "The Resignation" and instead have really made a record that is fueled heavily by Matt Embree's soulful and heartfelt vocals. The vocal range that he possesses is amazing and on this record it shines through perfectly, while being backed by an upped usage of a rhythm section containing horns and keyboards, another impressive continuation of an already baffling evolution for a band".

Evolution of the Unidentifiable.......2007-05-07
The next installment in the evolution of the Rx Bandits is well worth the buy. Like most music that is entirely original, a few listens may be necessary to appreciate the worth of this album. Approximately my sixth or seventh time listening to the album from start to finish is when I realized its importance. For anyone who knows the Rx Bandits, this is a must buy. For anyone who is not familiar with them, check out their website and you'll find a few mp3's and videos that are worth taking a look at.
Stellar.......2007-04-13
I had low expectations for this album, mainly due to the fact that 'the Resignation' was such an amazing and heartfelt album, and I was sure that the Rx Bandits would never be able to top it. I was expecting a change in directions, possibly with a new focus on commercialism, since this band really could become something huge with such writing ability. I was absolutely sure I was going to see the Bandits dumb down the music for the radio, and abandon the thoughtful genius that makes this band so unique. Of course, my worries were completely unwarranted, '...And the Battle Begun' is definately one of the finest slabs of music to be released in 2006.
The only prediction of mine that came true about this album is the shift in focus; but rather than in a more commercial direction, the Bandits, to my extreme delight, actually throw a whole lot more into the mix this time around. While 'the Resignation' was based around emotionally charged and intelligent, straight-forward rock songs, '...And the Battle Begun' puts a huge emphasis on the brass section. While the brass was used only moderately in previous albums for flavoring, we find it right in front of the mix on this one, driving the tracks in a couple of occasions. There is also a whole lot more focus on experimentation, shifts, and all the great little things that make good music. There is never a lack of variety, intelligence, nor raw emotion in the Bandit's latest release.
While some would expect such a shift in focus to maybe take away from the plain catchiness and power of 'The Resignation', I assure you all that the 'Bandit vibe' is still very active. This is simply another stage in the Bandit's evolution, and not to my dissapointment at all. Very intelligent and interesting, '...And the Battle Begun' is so much more than I ever expected it to be, and I assure Bandit fans that this is by no means a dissapointment.
Incredible..........2007-03-18
So I'm the first person that would jump on the "sold out from ska" train, but, seriously, these guys are ridiculous. No one in the world is like them. Enough has been said about the amazing musicianship, but no one has really commented on the concept of the album itself. The lyrics, along with the cover art, is extremely thought provoking and probing. The entire album is very artfully presented in a way that only these guys are able...they have come a long way from "those damn bandits"...
This is the most amazing band.......2007-02-25
Rx Bandits have really racheted it up a notch with this album. It was recorded live and is beyond fantastic. Please go to their website and check them out. I'm at a loss for words to even describe how absolutely amazing "And the Battle Begun" sounds. Watch the video on the website for "In Her Drawer"...remarkable song, from the best band out there right now.

I must say this band has me at a loss for words. This album is great in every sense of the word. Amazon needs to put up samples. People need to hear this cd, go to their myspace and listen to their samples. If you like buy this cd. It's one of my favorites.

This album is great.......2007-03-16
yeah like everyone else said its hard to give this thing a genre, id call really good fricking music that will make you want to start a revolution against corpratism, bush, and pop culture haha well if you take it seriously, but the lyrics are strong, the guitar is sick, and the drums are really technical, the horns are nice too. If you want some energetic music, buy this. There are a couple slower tracks too but they blend well and offer a break from all the rocking, very well written.
so good.......2007-01-03
i can listen to this cd over and over, its one of my favorites ever
Excellent Genre-Defying Music.......2006-10-08
These guys don't seem to want to pick a genre. They transition easily from song to song from genre to genre. One song could be straight up ska, another a frenzy of prog rock, another smooth reggae, and another all three at the same time! This is the defining aspect of the album, variance. And it works very well. There's plenty of substance with very little filler. Not to mention the guitarwork and horn playing are phenomenal.
Crazy, addictive, amazing.......2006-06-07
Let me tell you a story. It goes New Year's eve totally smashed. Wake up at 630, never really going to bed still a little smashed. Go snowboarding at Mt. Baker high on ephedrain filled energy kickers. Best snowboard day of my life. Get stoned on the way down and somehow come across this album. I was wasted and just completely mystified trying to figure this music out. It cant be classified it just kicks ass. I remember vividly hearing this album for the first time. First time I ever heard the band. My freinds and I were totally in shock of how amazing this band was. We couldnt even desrcibe it. My budy had to pull over to puke, after he was done we just chilled and listed to this album on the side of the road and we were all blown away. It is still one of my top albums of all time.
Give it a Few Listens.......2006-06-03
Classification of this album is difficult. It's equal parts ska, punk, metal, dub, reggae, and God knows what else. But, Matt and the gang pull it off. At first, it might not come off as good as their previous album "Progress" (which if you don't smoke enormous amounts of pot, get first. You'll thank me later.) But, it grows on you. It's experimentation puts you off at first, but as you listen to it more and more, you come to appreciate the complexities of it. Soon, you'll realize what a masterpiece it is musically, and lyrically the brilliance of it. Once again, if your just getting into them start with "Progress" (Their first 2 albums were embarassingly bad, so don't even bother.) But get this soon after: you will never regret it.

Progress Indeed.......2007-02-01
I love this album. It was my introduction to the band and I still listen to it pretty frequently. The Bandits' previous album 'Halfway...' was much more straight ahead third-wave ska and has a few good songs on it but overall isn't as interesting as this album. The political/social consicousness that the lyrics display is backed up by passionate delivery and rocking instrumentation. Gak is still one of my favorite drummers. They move effortlessly between punk and third-wave ska while blending just a hint of pop song-writing without getting sloppy or sappy (except on "Anyone but you" which I really don't like). Their next album "The Resignation" is incredible. It follows the natural progression from poppy ska band to not quite definable awesomeness. If you've never heard the bandits before, start here and follow with the Resignation quickly, they complement each other very well. Also, do yourself a favor and check them out live, just be ready to dance.
great album!.......2006-05-19
My son and I trade off playing our music when we're in the car. My musical tastes are pretty wide and varied. When my son played Babylon the first time, I knew I liked these guys. I haven't listened to all of their music, but I really like this album.
Very good example of ska music. At first I thought I was listening to a long lost very old No Doubt album.
Buy it.

Customer Reviews:
I've probably listened to this cd over 300 times.......2005-06-11
This cd changed my life. So many different styles are incorporated into this album, and the delivery is perfect. It goes from punk-ish, to rock, to reggae, all with a touch of the ska. The lyrics to some of these songs are...can't put into words. The sound of Matt Embree's voice is out of this world, so much pain, yet so much happiness. All of this may sound kind of stupid, but that is because I can't find any words to describe how unbelievable this cd is. Buy it, or don't, either way it is still a landmark for its genre, err time.
one of the most surprising cd's i've ever bought.......2004-07-28
This cd continues to blow me away. Luckily, this was the first cd of the Bandits' I bought...if I bought either of the other 2, I wouldn't have wanted to buy another album of their's. Their first album is full of sub-par 3rd wave ska songs with bad lyrics, and their 3rd album is full of experimental, hard-to-define rock. On the other hand, this cd is almost perfect. They combine a few different types of music: punk, rock, reggae, ska, you name it. Every single track on this cd is solid, and some of the choruses are so catchy it will blow your mind. Listen to the chorus on "Status" and you will hear one of the best, catchiest choruses ever. Another great thing about this cd is the fact that it never really gets old. The singer has a distinct voice, the band has a pretty distinct sound, and you can tell they love to make music. The only flaw to speak of on this cd is the Bandits' strange desire to add another minute or two of feedback or weird sounds to the end of every song. That is irritating, but if you don't mind changing tracks at the end of every great song, then buy this. And it is worth it.
Talent is Defined By Cd's Like This One.......2004-06-21
Rx Bandits are a unique blend of many influences, most heavily ska. However I would not call RXB ska since they have various influences including raggae and latin. This cd is more heavily leaned toward ska than anything else. This is also the more poppy of the RXB cd's. It also displays the amount of talent and versatility, that only RXB has. Check out "Analog Boy" and "Infection."
It's okay..........2004-03-26
This is a decent CD if you're looking from a has-been ska band turned straight up rock. I wouldn't say they've turned their back on legitimate ska, more graduated or evolved from it. I prefer their earlier releases. Still most def. a great band with amazing musicians and outstanding vocals
I do not recommend this CD for anyone who is looking for a good ska CD.
Just Amazing.......2004-03-05
Musicianship, excellent songwriting, hooks, socially conscious lyrics, power, fun, this album has it all. You hear something like this and wonder why we're not hearing this on the "Clear Channel" owned radio stations.

Ska Punk yes ska punk if you dont like ska punk then go away.......2006-02-13
This is nice Ska punk , tightly written think Sublime think mad caddies and less than jake. It's short and sweet never out stays it's welcome , It's a bit of fun in a world of nu-metal dirges , it's fun dancing music for our generation. I love the tone of the guitars it's very clean and not to much distortion then the trumpets (I think they are trumpets) The vocalist has the right amount of clash, specials, sublime and punkiness to make this album pure brilliance. Yes if you like nice light ska punk with some original lyrics.
Pretty good, but not their best..........2005-01-22
This is a great album. It makes me want to jump up and down, thrashing my head around violently enough to give even my onlookers whiplash, but musically, this album is not their best.
In "Halfway..." RxB has a youthfulness to them, a lot of high energy, which is great. I particularly like "Now or Never" because of it's plucky ska tune. So if you love ska/punky alternative reggae, this album is for you. If you need something a little more loud and hardcore, look to their other 2 albums...
RxB!.......2003-03-23
This is by far the greatest album i have ever purchassed. It's ska and punk, and not just like punkska bands, there is a definative change between every song, it's amazing. RxB has very strong views, and if you talk to Matt (Embree [guitar and vocals]) he'll tell you that he just wants the ideas out there, he's not forcing you to believe them. This is a great album and everyone should have a copy!
once in a while a cd like this comes around..........2002-04-12
an orgasmic blend of ska and punk...yes you read that last part correctly. I cant write enough about this disc. It hits you from all sides, turns you upside down, shakes you around until another quarter hits the floor and then the jukebox starts rolling again. A joy to listen to. A joy to experience. If you love ska...buy it. If you love punk...buy it. If you love great vocals...great songwriting...GREAT MUSIC...BUY IT. yeah...

SKANK!.......2005-09-18
Assuming the acid-wrought art damage cover art didn't immediately pique interest, here is a consumer exercise:
Imagine your favorite punk rock album. Now, replace the sloppy playing, half-baked guitar solos, and whiny, Rotten vocals, and replace them with one of the tightest rhythm sections ever witnessed by human ears, gorgeous, harmonized sax-plus-trombone riffs, and a singular voice that positively drips sincerity.
You're not listening to the radio. You're listening to the RX Bandits firing a shot across its bow.
Whichever background you hail from, there's something to like on "The Resignation." From blistering punk rails against superficiality ("Sell You Beautiful") to politically-charged reggae rave-ups ("Overcome"), to moody, dark dance-rock that, for once, actually takes absolutely no inspiration from Depeche Mode at all ("Taking Chase As The Serpent Slithers"), it's a record that fires on all cylinders and never fails to deliver ("Decrescendo"). If none of this is intriguing, there's also at least one 7+ minute prog-flavored adventure present, and enough energy to power a steel drum factory.
You can complain about the lyrics in a time where one of the recent pop hits of the moment included the line "you make me wanna la-la." You can pretend that it's not interesting music and that you're "above" such "juvenile" endeavors. You can even play the part of the checker-pantsed ska ubermensch and myopically declare that there are better ska records to be found, in blind assumption of a singular genre's uncontested dominion over all things musical (see: metalheads).
You can do any or all of these things... and you can also get the hell out of my car/apartment/place of business.
The Evolution of Ska.......2005-04-18
WOW! I've never seen such an amazing display of lyrical power, musical talent, and sick guitar parts! The Rx Bandits take a genre made famous by bands like Less Than Jake and Reel Big Fish, and throw their own little dark twist on it. Add a little reggae, shake vigorously for 10 minutes, and you've created the Rx Bandits. Definitely a ska band Brad Nowell of Sublime would be proud to listen to.
The CD has 12 songs on it:
1. Sell You Beautiful (9/10)- an amazing intro song, to show the lyrical power of these musical masterminds. the song is very fast and catchy, about society's desire to be physically perfect by whatever means necessary.
2. Prophetic (10/10)- this song starts out completely amazing with the trumpets, so you're instantly left to think "it can't get much better than that," but the powerful guitars and lyrics about depression, drugs, and cutting leave this to be an emotional masterpiece.
3. Newsstand Rock (Exposition) (8/10)- after prophetic, this song brings it down just a bit. It's a wonderful experience nonetheless.
4. Overcome (the Recapitulation) (12/10!!)- with a name like that, you can't go wrong! This song has an amazing reggae beat to it, and no chorus whatsoever, yet it is probably my favorite jam on the cd. It's about the flaws of capitalism
5. Never Slept So Soundly (10/10)- The guitars make this song, without a doubt! The chorus guitar part starts off with some very fast skips, then bolts into a very heavy explosion, and repeats about 4 times for each chorus. The lyrics themselves are powerful as well
6. Taking Chase as the Serpent Slithers (7/10)- this song doesn't have the same energy as the last 5, but is still quite good.
7. Republic (5/10)- another anti-government song. The cd would be fine without this track.
8. Mastering the List (10/10)- the longest song on the cd, being about 7 minutes long, but it's worth every second. it's hard to listen to this song and not get up and bust a move!
9. Falling Down the Mountain (7/10)- nothing too spectacular, yet still the Bandits at their best.
10. Dinna-Dawg (and the Inevitable Onset of Lunacy) (8/10)- the progressive explosion for the ending starts here in my opinion. this song is quite brilliant as well, but not quite the calibur of some of the others.
11. Pal-treaux (10/10)- this song should fool a brilliant music fan into thinking that it's the end. it seems to be all wrapped up and the stylistic changes in this song would make it an amazing ending song as well. Yet there's still more...
12. Decrescendo (15/10!!!!!!)- the god-like epitome of ska-core music. Decrescendo is without a doubt the most brilliant song on the cd, and my second favorite jam. The lyrics are powerful, and they alter their style a few times. It's finished off with an amazing minute of straight jamming.
Dark ska, what a beautiful experience!
Fantastic album!.......2005-01-22
I absolutely loved this album. Their amount of rockage reached an ultimate peak, but I did have one thing bother me. The lyrics, though worded beautifully, were a bit preachy. It had a little bit of a "you're a bad person and you should change yourself to be like me" feel to it.
But with that aside, a marvelous musical masterpiece of rock/ska/reggae. Definitely worth the money!
one of the best albums of all time.......2004-10-15
musically, this is the best album so far by rx bandits. Being a huge punk/ska fan and a sax player myself, i was at first disappointed by the lack of horns. But there is so much going on in every song the album just doesnt ever get old. My personal favorite album.
this stuff kicks.......2004-09-01
when i first bought this cd, i only liked a few songs, and didnt like the few more creative and reggae like songs on this disc. i recently popped it back i nthe player, and man, im lovin it. it seems peoples main complaint with this cd is it is too loud or agressive and not to much like progress...well if you knew anything about the band, they recorded this live in the studio, not tracked seperatly like most records are. drums, bass, guitars all were recorded together, with minimal mixing as to not create a dubbed down sound, but the singing was recorded seperatly. anyways, i love this cd, even if it is a change from progress, which is also a masterpiece. if your new to this band, get progress first, then this, then check out the older stuff. oh yeah, they DO need to get off drive-thru, since it is turning into a crap record lable, im glad Senses Fail left to Vagrant, now RX needs to leave too, maybe a next album will be even better....buy this
