WOW,, I know this is an older recording but I love it. If you like live electric blues you won't be disappointed..

5 out of 5 stars Does Get Much Better.......2006-02-26

I recently bought this for $5.00 used. I am afraid I feel like I stole something from the shop steward. This disc is amazing from start to finish. A mix of blues, stunning solos, jazzy tunes. It's crisp, clean and Ronnie Earl at his very best. No one who has reviewed this has come away with anything but glowing kudos; 12 sensational offerings, one better than the next. How could this end up for $5.00? It's worth four times that much.

5 out of 5 stars Jaw dropping.......2006-02-22

This record is stunning. Inspired and inspiring. Among my all time favorite modern blues recordings. Just awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Guitar Superstar!.......2005-05-16

Ronnie Earl really sizzles on this album, and if you didn't know who was playing when you first heard this (as I did not) you would think he's about the best axeman since guys like T-Bone, Buddy or Magic Sam came along as I do). It is actually more fun to just kick back and listen to his acrobatic playing than it is to even hear somebody try to sing and play the blues at the same time. Derek Trucks is my man, and definitely an emerging force in modern blues but I don't think he or even Buddy let alone anyone else can play guitar like what you're getting here.

5 out of 5 stars Blues Guitar for Blues Guitarists (and you too!).......2005-01-20

This cat just burns. His solos are not just copies of someone he heard back in the day, but real, feeling-laden creations that make you sweat. On "Thank you Mr. T-Bone", he emulates the single-string runs and pumping chords of The Man Himself, T-Bone Walker. No one has ever come close to this kind of mastery, not even Eric, Stevie Ray or Jimi.

Buy this CD. Buy it again! Buy it still again!!

The Smokin' Joe Kubek Band featuring Bnois King--a blues fan's dream selection all on one platter. Included are two unreleased tracks from the sessions that produced their best-selling Texas Cadillac album, and a special guest appearance by blues legend Little Milton. Spanning ten years and seven albums, this is the one and only quintessential Smokin' Joe Kubek Band collection.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nice sampling of the Bullseye Blues albums..........2007-04-15

If you're new to the music of the Smokin' Joe Kubek Band, this is a great place to start...but don't end here!

Basically, this is a compilation of the band's earlier albums released on the Bullseye Blues/Rounder Records label, along with a couple of previously unreleased tracks, "Big Legs" and "I'm In An Awful Mood," which are from the Texas Cadillac sessions.

Personal favorites of mine on this disc:

"TV Light," which shows a nice personal side of Bnois King, discussing what's really important in life.

"Damn Traffic," a gritty rocker we can all relate to!

"Texas Cadillac," which, along with the later release "My Heart's in Texas" have become signature songs, played again and again at concerts.

"Got My Mind Back" Joe doesn't play this live so much, anymore, but I always request it when I see them. It starts with got a wicked bit of slide and cool drums, and is always a crowd pleaser!

"Corn Palace" This funky-slinky instrumental, along with "All The Love There Is" and "Spanish Trace" (not included on this collection) show a musical knowledge that extends well beyond the blues.

It's a great sampling of the early music. If you like this, you'll certainly want to move on and get the more recent Blind Pig releases like "Roadhouse Research" and "Show Me The Money," which are solid, well-produced, and very listenable from start to finish.

And...make sure you go see the band live. The current lineup of Joe Kubek (smokin' Texas Strats), Bnois King (smooth vocals and jazzy Gibson rhythm/lead), Paul Jenkins (beat-perfect bass), and Dave K. (drums served with a smile) is probably the best ever. They will likely talk to you between sets, and would be happy to sign your CD!

5 out of 5 stars Smokin' Joe fits the bill.......2007-01-16

I like Smokin' Joe and Benois King, because they are still true to the original Texas Blues that catapulted SRV and many greats to the top of contemporary blues artists. This compilation is right on the money with lots of "tasty" treats to enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Texas Style.......2007-01-06

Smokin' Joe Kubek has had many a Cd over the last 15 years, but this one truely hits the high spots. The material is consistently good and there are a few bonus cuts also. This provides a great way to be served Texas Style!

5 out of 5 stars Smokin' Joe is tops.......2006-06-14

The only problem with this CD is that it leaves out the 80 plus songs of Smokin' Joe's that are so darn good they deserve to on his "best" CD!!!! The point being, Smokin' Joe is consistently excellent and I believe I have every one of his releases. If you like sloowwww burning blues guitar served up Texas style; then Smokin' Joe is for you. If you're new to Smokin' Joe; this CD serves as an excellent introduction but move onto Texas Cadillac and some of his earlier CDs if you desire raw, passionate Texas blues. Joe ain't no Robert Cray or slick-like some of the newer "contemporary blues" artists; instead this is blue collar music from the gut. Played with passion the way blues was meant to be played. Buy this CD! And go see Smokin' Joe if he's performing in your area!!!

5 out of 5 stars Smokin' Joe Smokes!.......2006-04-23

Having seen Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King live just three days ago I can tell you that they are modern-day masters of the blues. Although Texas-based their sound extends to Chicago and New Orleans as well. Additionally, Smokin' Joe's slide guitar work is outstanding and gives the modern-day listener a sense of what Elmore James likely sounded like live.

Like so many contemporary blues artists Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King have never received the critical acclaim and popularity that their outstanding music deserves. Catch them live if you can and absolutely get hold of all their CD's!

Ronnie Earl is an astonishing technical guitarist. Even when he plays lightning-fast or oddly syncopated passages, his fingering is immaculate and his phrasing is sinuously fluid. Earl has never quite harnessed his rare ability, however. His tendency to overplay when he was a member of Roomful of Blues only got worse when he left to become his own bandleader. Grateful Heart: Blues & Ballads indulges the worst habit of such crossover-jazz projects: noodling. Earl and his bandmates meander through the chord changes with no emotional impetus behind them, no destination before them, and no hurry to get anywhere in particular. --Geoffrey Himes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars No noodling. Just classic Earl........2003-11-14

I tell ya... The guy from Amazon who wrote the piece about this album needs to get his ears cleaned out!

I have yet to hear an Earl tune where he's "just noodling". Yes, this album is a jazz-blues crossover, but it's a good one. His duets here with David "Fathead" Newman are just fabulous. Some of them sensual and smooth, some of them burning like a hot skillet!

Overall the pace of the album is slow to mid-tempo, but then again the title is Ballads & Blues, so no surprises here.

Obviously the two main genres tackled here are blues & jazz, but there are plenty of other influences present here ranging from gospel to latin.

People who want to hear straight blues from Mr Earl should look at his latest "Feel Like Going On" which is also great.

I feel the music on Blues & Ballads feels a bit like a bluesier version of Kenny Burrell.

If you like your blues on the jazzy side (think vintage port instead of Jack Daniels) this album's a damn fine choice.

5 out of 5 stars Music to soothe the Soul and enlighten your ears..........2000-12-13

This is the best and most important album by Ronnie Earl and the Broadcasters. I say this because it is the first album that truly moves his music into the jazz genre'. Earl's playing is melodically beautiful, well improvised although structured in the end. The B-3 sound melded with David"Fathead" Newman's tenor saxophone takes you on a journey into spirituality. If this album doesn't chase away the blues, there may be no hope for you... Make this cd a must have. My highest recommendation. Also check out "Colour of Love", Earl's follow-up to this disc and Blue Note records debut.

5 out of 5 stars Life affirming.......2000-07-18

This album represents a wonderful blending of blues and jazz, with superb musicianship and a great production. Mellow, moody, and moving, Earl is the star but he allows plenty of space for sax and keyboards to take center stage in turn. This is an album of instrumentals, and as the title suggests, it has a relaxed atmosphere that demands deep engagement with the listener. When I play this cd I just get drawn in and find myself grooving silently with it.

I play guitar so I really love listening to Earl's delicate touch, but this is not an album for muso's where competence replaces emotion. In fact it is the exact opposite - being soulful and engaging. I find that everyone I play this album to has the same reaction -- 'what is that? - it's beautiful' -especially people who think they do not like jazz. As an earlier reviewer said, I also give this a gift to people - as Earl seems to have given us this music as a reminder of how special life can be, and it seems appropriate to pass this on.

Earl has been though some tough times with addiction and this album represents a cleansing and a new found appreciation for life. If ever music could communicate such feelings, I think this album does. Treat yourself to a reminder of what music can do for us - this is special.

5 out of 5 stars Ronnie at his best !! This CD is packed full of great tunes.......1999-06-09

Every song on this CD should have lyrics.. You will find yourself making up words as hear the beautiful music. I give this away as a gift to all ages and all kinds. Does not matter what kind of tunes they thought they liked, cause they like this Ronnie Earl.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing..........2007-06-27

My father gave me some tapes when I was a little boy. One was a mix of the Beatles, & the other was a copy of Hope ( I listened to them over and over); and it was at the time when MTV started. Soon I was carried away by the flash of my fluttering TV. The Beatles came back into my life again as time passed, but I couldn't remember the name of this album, I had been searching for. I remembered a story album & asked every musician I knew. I did hear the name a couple of times, but couldn't spell it. Finally I found it on my computer. The first time I listened to it, it brought a tear to my eye, and now after all these years understanding it blew me away. The most beautiful story album ever made!

5 out of 5 stars Great Thematic Rock Opera.......2007-04-17

Okay, it's not *actually* an opera, but this classic alternative rock album from the late '70s is a single story told through some exceptional orchestrated rock. I owned a vinyl LP copy back in the day, wore out a cassette copy, and recently rediscovered the CD.

The story of "Hope" is an analogy to the human experience on earth told through a series of songs about those no-long-existing beings on the planet "second from the sun." One can enjoy the music at several levels; as stand-alone classic alternative rock, excellently produced (a la Alan Parsons Project before they were around), or one can dig deeper and get into the message and clever writing within the thematic message of "Hope."

My favorites include the Politzanian national anthem embedded in "Politzania," "The Loneliest of Creatures," a wonderful space-choral piece, "Around the Universe in 80 Days..." Pretty much the whole thing. I rarely listen to bits of this album and tend to prefer it on long drives when I can enjoy the whole thing.

5 out of 5 stars An underrated classic with a lasting message.......2006-03-31

I remember when this came out; I was in college at the time. I had no awareness of this group then (I was absorbed in acid rock and the Grateful Dead - hey, it was college!) but an acquaintance turned me on to this and I have loved it since.

This record (now CD) is an unsung prog-rock classic that's long been overshadowed by its more popular musical brethren. I do hear influences from SuperTramp, Emerson Lake & Palmer, and Pink Floyd. However, this is also a coherent, musically multi-layered concept album that packs an emotional punch and transcends its influences.

The general idea is that a space-traveling race journeys to a solar system, and encounters the wreckage of the planet Klaatu, a metaphorical stand-in for Earth. The only remnants are a laser-beam lighthouse adrift in the asteroid belt, manned by a single person. The disc is a musical account of the destructive fall of Klaatu's once-great civilization Politzania, and the space travelers' encounter with the dying lighthouse keeper.

The message resonates if you give it a chance. It also has stunning relevance today. If you don't see the similarities between Klaatu's fictional Politzania and Bush's America, then I have to assume you're A) a Republican; B) a musical snob. The tunes "So Said the Lighthouse Keeper" and "Hope" are probably among the most moving pieces of music ever to come out of the prog-rock milieu.

This disc will always have a place in my CD collection. I am so glad it's back in print. If you're interested enough to have read this review, you owe it to yourself to get this.

5 out of 5 stars It's the message.......2004-02-12

This is all about the message. The madman, The lighthouse keeper. I know it all sounds strange and all that, but listen to the words. It may just give you hope!

2 out of 5 stars Very, very cute........2003-09-02

If you like cute. It's okay, but you have to waid through
a lot of syrupy, cloying, well, Canadianess. This stuff
would be great on Sesame Street.

5 out of 5 stars Great Instrumental Blues Album.......2006-10-19

Ronnie Earl, formerly of Room Full of Blues, is one of the great blues guitarist out there today. And this is one of Ronnie's better albums (they are all good). The album is a set of all instruments and has a great feel to it. The mood of the album is greatly enhanced with some excellent B3 organ playing. There are combination of slow and fast blues and I especially enjoy the rocking openning cut. Colour of Love is also excellent album by Ronnie with some guest stars and has some vocal tracks. For any blues fan you will not be disappointed with this album.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Instrumental Blues.......2002-03-18

I came across this CD in the racks at a blues festival in St. Louis a few years back, and the opening line of the descriptive text on the back of the CD caught my interest -- "Ronnie Earl is one of the finest blues guitarists of his generation -- but even this accolade doesn't do him justice." Though liner notes & descriptions of these sorts can be hyperbolic, this one turns out to be quite accurate. I bought the CD sound-unheard (I hadn't even heard of Ronnie Earl) and have never regretted it.

The opening track, "Eddie's Gospel Groove", is a fast-paced, uptempo blues number, and Mr. Earl quickly and firmly establishes his considerable musical virtuosity. While the rest of the songs on the CD aren't quite so uptempo, all of them feature great guitar work and Hammond B3 organ accompaniment (Bruce Katz is handles the ivories for the Broadcasters, which also consist of Rod Carey on bass and Per Hanson on drums).

Almost all the songs feature electric guitar, though the last number, "Bill's Blues", is an acoustic performance. On "Through Floods and Storms" there are saxophones as well (Paul Ahlstrand and Kevin Watson) and on "Blue Guitar", Mr. Earl gets some additional guitar work from Adrienne Hayes and Eddie O'Brien. All musicians handle their chores in fine fashion, but the focus of this all-instrumental CD (despite a brief two-line vocal intro on "I Am with You") is Mr. Earl's unsurpassed abilities.

While primarily a blues CD, on many songs there is an additional layering of jazz and even gospel, which elevates the CD above the ranks of just another great blues CD (not that there would've been anything wrong with that). The mix of jazz is actually appropriate, given the historically close relationship the blues and jazz have had in America.

A CD like this reassures the faithful fans of the blues that while the music idiom may not be the commercial powerhouse that top-40 pop and hip-hop are, the music is in the hands of some fine musicians and songwriters (Mr. Earl wrote or co-wrote all but one of the songs on this) and has a viable future indeed.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent blues album.......2001-08-03

Language of the Soul is a well recorded blues instrumental album that comes across so clearly, and so soulfully, that you can't help but love it. The first cut, "Eddie's Gospel Groove," cooks unbelievably. Most of the album is quite a bit slower but there is a good variety of tempos. Even the housemate that whines for Rammstein, Disturbed and KMFDM is sitting up and taking notice! This album is worth the price just for the first cut, but don't stop there -- there's a wealth of blues history and some great grooves on this CD. Ronnie Earl is one of the brightest lights keeping the blues flame alive.

5 out of 5 stars A Real Meat And Potatoes Player.......2000-03-07

Attention all guitar players-This is the real deal. This is not like all the new blues-pop-rock junk people are putting out these days. Simply the most amazing CD of instrumentals one can buy.

4 out of 5 stars Killer Dwarfs - 'Stand Tall' (Bullseye).......2004-03-18

Very nice reissue of the band's 1986 debut lp on CD.The Dwarfs were,in fact one of my favorite metal bands of the '80's.Even had the thrill of catching them play live once. They put on just SUCH a fun show. The boys from up north(that's Canada,of course) showcase their brand of somewhat theatric 'pop metal'.As I recall, the guys in the band sort of always reminded me of those cool kids that you personally knew from high school. With cuts like "Stand Tall(Stick To Your Guns)","Through Animal Eyes","Keep The Spirit Alive" and "Do Or Die",I have to say that 'Stand Tall' is one of those CD's that goes by pretty quickly. It's THAT good.Should appeal to fans of Kix,Quiet Riot,Mama's Boy's and Princess Pang(anyone remember them?).

4 out of 5 stars Children of grunge, relive your youth!.......2003-06-29

I was 12 when this was originally released. It was worth risking certain death to stay up late, watch Headbanger's Ball, and PRAY they would play the video to "Keep the Spirit Alive." I could even deal with Adam Curry as long as I got to see Russ Graham act a fool. The image of "Geddy Lee's hyper little brother" is burned into my brain! This was one of the last great silly hair bands before Seattle changed the norm (thank you!). It's just the right mix of catchy rock riffs (admit it, you love it) and memorable lyrics. They are still around, so check them out live if you get the chance! Definitely recommended for anyone who remembers the 80's and wanted to strangle themselves before listening to yet another Top 40 song.

4 out of 5 stars BT in TO.......2003-03-29

I'm so glad Stand Tall has finally been reissued in CD. I had the cassette once upon a time and I've really missed this album. The songs are great! Just the right blend of hard rock and lighthearted lyrics. This group was about fun music (you should have seen their videos). Take my advice, this CD is worth getting.

Now in the third or fourth stage of her indefatigable career, the 71-year-old Ruth Brown settles further into the two-pronged, stylistic groove established on her 1997 Bullseye debut, R+B=Ruth Brown. Backed by a bevy of New Orleans jazz and soul vets, Brown delivers a series of horn-inflected, indigo ballads like "Never Let Me Go," "True," and "The Richest One" that unearth the blues with an unruffled dignity reminiscent of Nina Simone or a less fragile Billie Holiday. On most of the rest of the material, Brown invokes her Broadway experience to become the archetypal blues mama who "don't take no mess." In that vein, "H.B.'s Funky Fable" is a humorous talk-sung tale for kids of all ages, and "Cabbage Head" resurrects the minstrel-vaudeville days of Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith with hilarious aplomb, as Brown nails the bawdy vernacular and trumpeter Abram Wilson spools out brassy asides that evoke the period perfectly. By the end of this Good Day, Brown proves she can inject gospel substance even into such Disney piffle as R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly." --Britt Robson

4 out of 5 stars Return to Old Stompin' Grounds.......2006-10-15

I met Ruth at the Cotton Club in Washington, DC in 1956 or 58 at a very hard time in my life. I was a dancer and she had a voice that hushed the traffic on Benning Rd, NE! This lady brought a new strain of blues to the forum, best and most unique since Alberta Hunter. I reside in So. Calif and would give my new dental bridge to see her again (and meet her son). Thanks to Amazon for restoring a wonderful part of my live. Bev H

4 out of 5 stars Good Day for the Blues.......2006-04-12

I had heard a song years ago and attempted to find it in local stores but only ran into dead ends. Amazon is where I found it and it was just what I was looking for. Ruth Brown tells a cute/funny story when singing "Cabbage Head" and I enjoy the blues. It was a good purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Exellent thru and thru..........2004-04-27

Miss Ruth brown was and still is the Queen of R&B. Of course these are not her classic Atlantic jump blues sides, and you can't compare this cd to her classic 50's songs like Mama He Treads Your Daughter Mean, and this Little girls Gone Rockin'. However listen to thsi cd for what it is, a great modern day blues cd, by a wonderful, still going strong singer. Brown doesn't squeel anymore, but she soes still posess a certian excitement and charm. I had the pleasure of seeing her live in Las Vegas in 2003, and she still rocks, and most of her audience was 20 somethings with pompadours and girls in poodle skirts. Brown really has a following with the rockabilly crowd, and listen to this cd and you'll see why it attacts us 20 somethings, and not just old fogies. A exellent 5 star worthy pure fun blues party cd, Brown is still in fine voice!

3 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Her Best.......2001-03-03

This CD is okay, but Ruth doesn't shine on this CD as much as others. There are some really good tracks on this CD, but a few silly ones. However, I've listened to quite a bit of Ruth's music, so my opinion may be colored by my experience with other albums. Better CDs include "Live in London", "Fine & Mellow", and maybe even "Blues on Broadway". Ruth is one of the greatest female vocalists ever.

If you're new to the B3 sound (and even if you're not) this is the album for you. From mellow to funky, Ron Levy puts the instrument through its paces in a sometimes playful and all-times soulful way. A little more to the acid side than some staunch B3 enthusiasts might like, he doesn't keep it screamin' all the time. Check it out!

4 out of 5 stars Only for True Gearheads!!.......2006-06-15

If you love BTO's early releases including Not Fragile, then you will love this.
But if you only know the BTO that is found on the dozen's of compilation cd's that have flooded the market, this isn't for you. The music is dated and there are no "TCB" or "YASNY" found within.

4 out of 5 stars Just One Thing.......2006-05-12

Everything Darth says is true as far as I know. However, I want to clarify his conclusion, which suggests these pre-BTO recordings were not available until now. On the heels of BTO's success in 1973-74, the Brave Belt albums were quickly reissued by Reprise in order to capitalize on Overdrive's popularity. I have never heard Brave Belt I, but Brave Belt II contains several great tunes that could have been quite popular. Dunrobin's Gone and Another Way Out are two of my favorites on that second Brave Belt album, which was fairly popular in the Northwest even as a reissue. The album isn't consistently good enough to merit 5 stars and I suspect Brave Belt I is similar. Still, there is worthy material here...if you liked BTO you will probably like at least some of what Brave Belt produced.

5 out of 5 stars Brave Belt - The roots of Bachman-Turner Overdrive.......2004-12-09

Brave Belt (2003.) A compilation combining Brave Belt's two albums, Brave Belt I (1971) and Brave Belt II (1972.)

When Randy Bachman left the Guess Who, he was taking a huge gamble. He was going out on his own to pursue his own musical career, and his first solo effort, the Axe album, sold poorly and even today remains overlooked by his fans. He'd later achieve success with a new group called Bachman-Turner Overdrive. But what many people don't know is that BTO was originally known as Brave Belt, and under that name they released two albums - Brave Belt I and Brave Belt II. With Brave Belt, Bachman shifted his rock sound from a pop-oriented direction to a one similar to that being used by American southern rockers of the day. And now the two Brave Belt albums have been combined into a single set! Read on for my review.

As I stated before, these albums marked a serious turning point in Bachman's musical sound. The group that would evolve into the legendary Bachman-Turner Overdrive is chronicled on the two albums that are featured in this set. The first disc of the set features the first of the two albums, Brave Belt I. It's on this album that Bachman first began to experiment with elements of the sound that would make his band well-known under the later name they would choose. However, both albums in this set do NOT have the pop-oriented sound that BTO would have - this is gritty, down-to-earth, southern style rock. C.F. Turner's picture appears on the cover of the Brave Belt I album sleeve, despite his not playing on the album. It was with Brave Belt II that Turner entered the mix, and instantly, the band began improving. The latter of the two albums improves upon the southern rock stylings of the first album. Turner's vocals are excellent, often echoing those of Creedence Clearwater Revival's John Fogerty (if you played Brave Belt II for some random music fan, they might actually think it was a Creedence album!) In the end, these are two excellent, long-forgotten albums.

In addition to reissuing the two classic albums, the second disc of this set gives you two rare bonus tracks! These are nice, but if they had been omitted, the record company could have fit the two albums onto a single disc. I personally would have preferred that, as it would have kept the album's price lower. Oh, well. The fact of the matter remains that these albums rock.

Following the release of the first two Brave Belt albums, the group would reinvent itself with a slightly more pop-oriented sound. What was planned to become Brave Belt III ended up becoming the first Bachman-Turner Overdrive album. That new outfit achieved almost instantaneous success, and the Brave Belt era was all but forgotten - until now. If you're a BTO fan, or you just like good southern-style classic rock, this set is a must-own.

The 6-foot-6 Arkansan with the weather-beaten electric guitar, the booming, earth's crust-deep basso profundo, and the huge repertoire of songs is still going strong in his mid-60s, playing nightly in honky-tonks everywhere. One of the pioneers of rockabilly, LaBeef provides good fun on CD as well, as one listen to Rockabilly Blues makes clear. The bluesy side of his music is emphasized in this collection of a dozen songs that were taped at four studio sessions in the 1980s and '90s, but languished in the Rounder vault until now. Meticulous, unselfconscious, and ever so passionate, LaBeef puts his distinctive stamp on the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson's "Bottle Up and Go" and Muddy Waters's "Mannish Boy." Nashville fiddler Buddy Spicher and New York-based pianist Dave Keyes are among the big guy's ace sidemen, and both make key contributions to this fine record. --Frank John-Hadley

5 out of 5 stars The best of Sleepy. Period........2006-08-20

As a diehard Sleepy fan, I have purchsed every recording he has made and seen him live as often as possible. Unforntunately, most of the material on his studio albums have been uneven in quality (often lacking the enthusiasm and raw power of his live shows) with the exception of an occasional few songs. However, this compilation of leftovers ironically is by far his best album. While we wait for the ultimate live album (Nothing But the Truth suffers significantly from very poor room acoustics), the cuts on Rockabilly Blues are amazing. For me, the standout is the first cut, "Bottle Up and Go" which I believe is a complete reworking of an old blues song. I, along with my five- and three-year-old daughters, have listened to this song repeatedly over the past couple of years and have yet to tire of it. To me, if marketed properly, this song could have found a place on country radio (Sleepy's lack of adequate promotion and marketing has always baffled and disappointed me). I strongly recommend this album to anyone interested in "real" American music.

4 out of 5 stars fun stuff...........2001-06-26

Yup, good effort from the big guy...always have had a soft spot in my heart for Sleepy, but he's suffered from occasionally uneven musical efforts. This one's a lot of fun. I've managed to annoy my neighbors playing his version of Little Richard's "Rip it Up" over and over again.

Check out that price too....good intro to Sleepy LaBeef

5 out of 5 stars Electrifying Blues.......2001-02-09

According to the liner notes included with this extraordinary album, Mr.Labeef himself thinks it may be his best record. It's easy to see why. Though it is a collection of left-overs from previous recording sessions, it plays like Sleepy's most focused album. All of the songs, as the title suggests, are blues oriented. But, for Sleepy, the blues cannot be confined to a formula. His take on the blues includes elements of country, gospel, bluegrass, and, of course, rockabilly. The performances here are among the most energetic and committed that I have heard on a Sleepy LaBeef album. Fantastic.
