Originally performed as a live accompaniment for a 1995 theater-dance production about the life of painter Egon Schiele, this is the both the exception to the Rachel's rule and their defining moment. Though they are normally a three-headed, multiperson new-music and classical ensemble centered around Jason Noble (ex-Rodan), Christian Frederickson, and Rachel Grimes, this suite was written entirely by Grimes and performed by Grimes (on piano), Frederickson (viola), and cellist Wendy Doyle. As always, the music (not to mention the letter-pressed packaging) is spellbinding; the fact that this is classical music by--and for--people who grew up on indie rock in no way diminishes it, nor does it make the music too low-brow for those with a classical background. For a more complete picture of what the entire Rachel's ensemble is capable of, both Handwriting and The Sea and the Bells are recommended. --Randy Silver

My favorite Rachel's album!.......2007-04-26

I own all Rachel's albums and "Music for Egon Schiele" is, by far, my favorite. I got it a couple of days ago and I've been playing it nonstop since then. It's a completely instrumental album where piano, viola and cello interact in a very Ryuichi Sakamoto kind of way. Throughout the album, you can get the feel that you are listening to a soundtrack to a movie and that impression is not completely off because the original concept for this album was as part of "a live accompaniment for a 1995 theater-dance production about the life of painter Egon Schiele" (Amazon.com).

At the end of the day, without much effort this (their second oldest album) has ended up being my favorite Rachel's album.

No questionable material here. This album truly is one of the most brilliant portrayals I have ever heard. You get to a point within the album, when the last thing you want is for it to stop. If you're on some type of quest for absolutely beautiful audio, then look no further, your search stops here. In actuality, anyone who likes or appreciates music and sound, in it's divine qualities, will come to a point throughout all their wandering, to eventually find something in which defines music. Depicts the type of sound, that actually make a person so appreciative of the planet in which they live. I have yet to find a better precipice. A better likeness to what make us all human, in each's own, somehow excellent, and remarkable.

the rachel's albums are gorgeous. i just wanted to add in a comment on the similarities to other classical composers, which i'm kind of surprised nobody has mentioned, in user comments or in reviews i've read of their stuff. just a random list of music i hear similarities to: philip glass and other minimalist composers; turn-of-the-century impressionist/early modern european folks (ravel, satie, etc - it has a very french/latin/eastern european sound to it); and michael nyman, specifically his music for the piano (don't really know his other work). any other classical music fans out there? i enjoy rachel's music immensely; i just can't help but wonder if it's brilliant or derivative (or perhaps both). (there are times when i hear what i'm sure are exact chord progressions out of some of glass' most devastatingly beautiful works...)

don't even question this purchase. i'm into some pretty weird stuff, but i have yet to play this masterpiece for someone and not have them immediately want it. listen to the sound clips--yes, the whole album is this good. it's one of the few albums i own (including all the classic indie/punk you can think of) that i can literally put on any time and re-live moments of my life to. it's good stuff--drive around in the snow with a friend and make memories. yes.
