The damage that Weezer has wrought. .......2006-03-03
If sweater-vests could rock out, they'd sound like Ozma. "Spending Time ..." may remind you of Scooter lookalikes furiously banging their heads and giving devil horns.
Ozma got their big break by opening for Weezer. Both share the annoying capacity for blending guitars with cheesy 80's synths. The perfect example is the title track, which could've been used in a promo for "Joanie Loves Chachi."
Another similar trait is irritating, whiny vocals with no range. On "Eponine", and other tracks, there's a definite Queen influence, especially in the bombastic guitars. But the singing is so wimpy and lifeless, it'll make you appreciate how unique Freddie Mercury was.
Ozma are so bland, sorting out socks might seem more exciting. Or sweater-vests.
Pinkerton-esque.......2004-12-03
Let me begin by saying that this review was written after Ozma's 2004 breakup. This was, to say the least, quite a heartbreak. And since there's been plenty of apt time to reflect upon Ozma's debut and sophomore albums [yes, the ones that sound like Weezer], I can now undoubtedly say that "Spending Time On The Borderline" is Ozma at its best. To put it plainly...a masterpiece. Admittedly, when I first picked this album up and popped it into my CD player, I was NOT impressed. Ozma could have broke up at that very moment and my response would have been, "Who cares...they're no good anymore." But as albums do have a tendency to grow on you, I decided to give this one a try. After all, what did I have to lose? Slowly and steadily certain tracks started to pop out at me..."Hey, 'Come Home Andrea' is one catchy song!" And, "Whoa, this Japanese song sure is poppy!" Then there are the deeper songs on the album, like "Eponine", "Bad Dogs", and "Game Over". They take a bit longer to love, but the wait is certainly worth it. To sum it all up, there's not a single track on this album that I wouldn't want to listen to, anywhere, anytime. Despite the mysterious tension that corrupted Brummel and Slegr, I, for one, know that they went out [no pun intended] on a good note with "Spending Time On The Borderline". Another "Pinkerton"? Perhaps. But only time will tell...
*Ryan and José have started up a new band labeled "Yes Dear". Hopefully they can continue their largely unpublicized legacy. Check them out at myspace.com/yesdear
A disappointment.......2004-11-05
I bought this album because I heard that Ozma was similar to Rooney and Weezer (bands I think are good). Ozma sure does have some similarities in this album (though they're probably more comparable to a Christian band like Reliant K), but that doesn't make the album any good. The whole album is very boring. There's just nothing special to it. I recommend that you pass on this.
Great Guitar Pop.......2004-10-16
I think that Ozma is consistently one of the more "interesting" bands to come along. I do hear the Weezer influence, but at the same time it is filtered through a lot of other bands (Queen anyone?) as well as a lot of originality. The two part vocal melodies, instrumentation, tones, etc. are fully realized on this "studio" album. I like the whole Ozma catalog, but the production on this disc kicks all the other ones in the rear. As a guitarist, I have to hand it to Ryen. This is consistently one of the better riff orientated guitar albums that I have heard in a long time. He can also shred like a beast, but all his guitar lines support the song melodically and rhythmically. You can't ask for more from a guitarist. All the guitar is there for a reason. This is playing that I aspire to. It reminds me a lot of Brian May.
As for the songs, "Your Name" is one of the most orginal ballads I have heard in a while. I love "Bad Dogs" even though most don't. The lead on that song is exceptional.
Experimental yet excellent..........2004-02-29
Ozma definitely shows some maturity musically with this album. I did a review of this CD for my school newspaper (over 1500 studnents/staff/parents read the newspaper), so hopefully I can get the word out about Ozma to some people.
1. Spending Time - the band experiments with some guitar textures and spiffy synth lines. May take a few listens to get used to. 7/10
2. Your Name - good vocals, perfect melody. 8.5/10
3. Come Home Andrea - a vaguely Celtic, alt-country tune that even people who hate country will like. One of the best tracks on the album. 9/10
4. Bad Dogs - marching band percussion leads into a hard rockin' song. 8.5/10
5. Utsukushii Shibuya - great bass line, nice flute and strings. 9.5/10
6. Turtleneck - probably the worst track. nice metaphorical lyrics though. 6.5/10
7. Game Over - catchiest track. my personal favorite. - 10/10
8. Curve In The Old 1-9 - elaborate and brilliant, both lyrically and musically. - 9/10
9. Restart - another GREAT track. such a perfect melody. - 9.5/10
10. Eponine - fun to sing along to. very catchy. - 9/10
11. Wake Up - nice vocals from Rachel Haden (Jimmy Eat World, Nada Surf, Weezer). 8.5/10
12. Light Years Will Burn - not my favorite. still pretty good though. 7.5/10
Overall: 8.5/10
Definitely awesome.

Customer Reviews:
An AWESOME sophomore outing from a truly underrated band!.......2007-01-30
While their first album, Common Ground, provided only one single with decent airplay, I was certain when this one was released that it would be a stellar hit for them. There were so many tracks that could have easily been number one singles. But, alas, the American record buying public was too preoccupied with either Grunge or Garth Brooks to notice.
This is one of those albums that not only do you NOT have to skip any songs, you anxiously await each one. The music and lyrics are so pure they seem timeless. "Mother" is the true standout song here, as sung from the perspective of humanity to the earth. "Mother, there's a whole above our heads. I'm the one who put it there, and I'm the one whole shake the beds..." Unfortunately the rest of the world will never get a chance to hear the message. If only they'd have shaken the beds a little harder. Or maybe we weren't interested in waking up to the truth.
Do yourself a favor and pick this up - you won't regret it.
A great band that most people don't remember.......2006-05-07
Rhythm Corps was one of my favorite bands in the late 80's and early 90's, and to this day I still don't get tired of hearing this album. Great vocals, strongs guitars, solid rhythm section and politically driven lyrics make them an American version of U2. Their live shows are incredible. I still don't know how they never made it big, as everyone of their songs is great. Their two major release albums (Common Ground and TFNWIUTB) are among my all-time favorites.
A nice find.......2006-02-17
I got into Rhythm Corps when they first came out when I was working in college radio. As luck would have it, they were scheduled to play at our Spring Fling (Ferrum College) and I got to see them live! It was a great show and since I was on the radio station staff, I got to hang with them after the show. I still have my autographed bass pick...Great memories.
Hear this before you die.......2005-04-19
This is, by far, one my my favorite bands. I grew up listening to these guys and never heard a single song that I didn't like. Of course, that was before they got a major record deal and went "big time". I expected that they would start writing songs about girls and cars but much to my surprise, it never happened. They not only managed to keep their semi polical writing style but surpassed my highest expectations. If you're only experience with Rhythm Corps is from hearing songs like "Common Ground", then you're in for something awesome. For the unfamiliar, I would compare them older U2 with a much more solid political folk/rock base. I can't recommend this band and this album enough. My fear is that someone somewhere won't get a chance to hear this album before they die.

Swimming in an ocean of sound.......2001-03-10
The swimmer by Helms is an artistic masterpiece. I love the way the bass lines intermingle with the guitar and the drums pull you in, creating a sound that envelopes your entire being. The lyrics are thought provoking and sung in a kind whimsical tone with occasional eruptions of feeling. I love track 3 the smallest world in the world, the sounds that come out of the gutiar are unlike anything I have ever heard before, creating a beautiful image in your head. Track 6 starts off like a wave of sound. By chance I happened to see them play in Richmond, VA and I was instantly hooked. I bought the CD and have not stopped playing it yet. If you are looking for a new sound to carry you into the next level this is definatly it. Try it out I am sure you will love it just as much as I do.

Recalling Marlon Brando's "Wild One" rejoinder, this Olympia power trio seems to be willing and able to rebel against pretty much anything--from major label pursuit to the limits of standard chord progression--put in its path. Unwound rip through songs like "New Energy" and "Natural Disasters" with such palpable rage that even listening to 'em can be exhausting, particularly when singer Justin Trosper hits full throttle. Unlike some of its "emo-core" peers, the trio seldom comes across as one-dimensional, thanks to tricky touches like the disorienting sampler loops that wind through "Pardon My French." Analogous to kindred spirits Fugazi, Unwound can be uplifting and annoying--often at the same time--but they could never be called boring. --David Sprague
Customer Reviews:
Sigh...another lost classic..........2006-06-19
They may not have received as much attention or acclaim as some of their peers, but in terms of rejecting traditionally commercial sounds, Unwound were a key band in finishing what the likes of Nirvana and Soundargen had started. Where the bands out of Washington State that dominated the first half of the '90's (along with the countless imitators that followed) still tended to follow traditional compositional styles, Unwound pretty much refused to make any nods to accessibility, with most of the songs on The Future of What constituting angry middle fingers at such quaint ideas as predictable structures and straightforward arrangements. Indeed, what struck me first upon listening to this album was how ugly most of the songs were, at least upon initial contact. Granted, nothing here quite achieves Jesus Lizard-style fugliness, but there's still some pretty messy and atonal stuff to be found. Justin Trosper may not have been among the most technically skilled rock guitarists of the 90's, but his style definitely ranks up there with the most unique and interesting. Choppy riffs and pretty microtonalities pop up from time to time, but more often than not his playing is assaultive and abrasive, relying heavily on feedback and distortion for a sound that ducks, dives, bludgeons and dances in equal measure. What structure does exist mostly comes from the rhythm section, particularly chick drummer Sara Lund, whose skin-pounding is often explosive but always measured and dexterous. With Justin's monumentally urgent howls topping things off, the end result of is a wild, reckless, and unhinged album that veers recklessly all over the map. Just check out the mountainous dynamics of slow-burning epics like Swan and Disappoint, or the way Equally Stupid and Accidents on Purpose segue without warning between violence and placidity. Also, I should note that while I've seen lots of comparisons between Unwound and Sonic Youth, the similarities are more in attitude and spirit than in sound; you won't hear too much of the Youth's New York cool in these songs (nor will you detect much of the reflectiveness and maturity of Unwound's also-excellent swansong Leaves Turn Inside You). That said, for indie rock fans who lean more toward the Sonic Youth/Fugazi/Drive Like Jehu end of the indie spectrum, The Future of What is essential listening.
The best!.......2000-06-13
I've frequently heard it said that "New Plastic Ideas" is the best Unwound album out there... not so..."the future of what" is deifinitely the best documentation out there of this WA based trio. What this album lacks in the song to song consistency present on "ideas" it more than makes up for in bredth and vision. The album moves from the over the top loudness of "new energy" to spatially expansive "disappoint" and grand finale, managing to encompass everything in between (songs in 10/8 and 9/4 for example). The album is great partly because it has no standout tracks (although Equally Stupid is easily my favorite), and also because it doesn't linger too long on any one thought the way "repetition" and "fake train" do. Also included for your enjoyment are several minutes of strange organ music in the songs "pardon my french" and "excuse me but pardon my french" (brilliant!) and, of course a couple tracks of standard noise-making nonsense. The album's only downside is the track "here come the dogs" which, while not a bad track altogether, has such a nirvana-esque intro that it renders it completely useless when compared to the rest of the mind-numbing set. I have easily over 500 cd's of all types of music and this is one of my top ten...take care though: i didn't really get into this album until about half a year after i bought it. if you aren't really familiar with unwound, it takes some getting used to. oh yeah, brilliant words too: "another episode, behind the tainted screen, a choking victim of its vomit, naturally, a scary horrorshow that starts to speak too slow and then it makes it clear that it will disappear." but this album won't.... ever. If you don't buy it, borrow it from someone!
magnificent and beautiful.......2000-02-16
it's a crime that no one has reviewed this album before now. unwound are one of the most underrated bands of the '90s. this album, along with repetition are their best. unwound manage to mix incredible moments of beauty in their uncompromizing noise-rock. the song structures and melodies on this album are incredibly inventive and unconventional, yet at the same time wholly engaging and absorbing. truly a magnificent and beautiful piece of music. i have both the vinyl and the cd i love this album so much, but it should be noted that the cd comes with extra boredom.

"Welcome to the Planet " can be considered a great link in the revolution back to quality music by quality musicians.
Take Matchbox 20 and cross it with a little Lenny Kravitz, Prince, Chilli Peppers or even Steely Dan and you might have the basis for describing this new and refreshing pop sound.
Customer Reviews:
Soulful, Funky and Hip Rock.......2003-08-04
If you are the type of person that has been asking yourself, "where is the integrity in music today?" this is the album for you. I think my feelings for this album would be best expressed by quoting words first spoken by the brilliant artist Prince during last year's One Night Alone Tour, "real music, by real musicians, for real music lovers."
Not quite as fun as their first EP The Starcandy Incident, Welcome to the Planet is more mature and cohesive. Their new material is a little less glossy-pop and a little more brooding rock.
Don't get me wrong, the rhythm section is as funky as ever. Joe's drumming alone is reason enough to buy the album. The man is better than any drum machine on the market. There is not a single beat out of place; not one drum or cymbal is struck if it's not absolutely on time, in place, and absolutely necessary. Add unique, tastefully melodic bass lines in the league of Flea and Key Low and Hujo end up constructing the foundation for a band suitable for a downtown office high-rise. All the guitar and vocals have to do in not cloud the issue, and they don't.
The guitar and vocals add two more dynamic colors to the vibrant soundscape. The vocal melodies are clean and articulate and beautifully complement the rhythm section. The fact that you can understand every word the first time adds to the appeal. The vocals are emotive, sensitive and poignant.
Welcome to the Planet is chock full of soulful, funky and hip rock tunes that don't miss. Pop it in and just push play because you won't want to skip a single track. A true album, this is a collection of songs that complement each other well and flow from one song to the next.
