*A specially priced 2CD set with over 110 minutes of some of the greatest film music in the history of cinema.
*New digital recordings in spectacular and sound performed by the acclaimed City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and National Youth Jazz Band.
*Includes world premiere recordings from "The Birdman Of Alcatraz," "Thoroughly Modern Millie," "Airplane!" and "An American Werewolf In London."
*In 2004 the world of cinema lost one of the most iconic figures in film composing. This collection has been lovingly created and compiled as a tribute to a genius and true master of the art of film scoring.
Customer Reviews:
Sad Really Sad.......2007-05-13
These CDs don't meet the standards I would have expected from Elmer Bernstein's wonderful film music.
*Boring*
It just didn't have the energy one would expect from "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.
An excellent movie themes antology by ELMER BERNSTEIN.......2007-05-10
Silva Screen Records, presents this antology of the music from the late great composer/conductor ELMER BERNSTEIN, who supervised this recording just before die.
Played the The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by his one time assistant James Fitzpatrick
Recorded in HDCD and Dolby Surround
Excellent.......2007-04-22
it's unfortunate that more tracks weren't able to be recorded as theree was a good 15-20 minutes of space remaining on both discs. Regardless, this is an excellent sampler, especially in conjunction with Varese's Bernstein sampler including rare stuff like the Black Cualdron.
With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.
The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.
I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.
Great Film Music.......2007-03-09
This is a great recording of some of the best film music ever. From the
great westerns to the Theme from Airplane to music he did for television,
Bernstein was one of the greatest.
Fun, Powerfull music.......2007-02-17
It's great! It brings back memories of my dad. He loved John Wayne and the old cowboys of the Magnificent Seven. But it's nice just to listen and relax (it's not all cowboy music).

THIS COLLECTION SMELLS LIKE A BUFFALO TURD! YUK!.......2006-06-16
This collection is way too short and is missing so much and it makes no sense because there's SO MUCH room left on this cd.
I don't get record companies that decide to release an album on cd yet they don't do anything to enhance an already measly collection.
What is the point????
Anyway, you get the ultra classic "Satellite of Love" with those great Bowie harmonies at the end and hand claps and you also get the expected "Walk on the wild side" which was one of only two top 40 hits scored so far in Lou's career.
You also get a slice of the incendiary "Rock n' roll animal" with "Sweet jane" but the scorching guitar twin attack opening has been chopped off which really sucks since it's one of the highlights of that album but "White light" plays on uncut.
There's the laidback tendertale of "Coney Island baby" in where Lou proclaims that he "wanted to play football for the coach" and then dedicates the song to his transexual love interest Rachel saying that he would give it all up for her.
You also get the playful "Wild child" and "I love you" off his debut and "How do you think it feels" from the ultra depressed but masterful "Berlin".
Now my big problem with this collection is where is the artful and touching masterpiece "Perfect day" and the brutal epic "Street Hassle" and the harrowing "Lady day" and the poetic eloquence of "Women" etc....
I mean Lou is one of the greatest writers of all time so when you say "The Best of Lou Reed" well then you expect to get not a taste of the best of but THE BEST OF!!!!
This is a cd release of an old album so add in the classics like "Street hassle" and or a interview possibly never released before or something else other than this pathetic excuse for a collection from one of the icons of rock.
You'd do much better by breaking out a few more bills and getting the Lou conceived double collection "NYC MAN" where you get a slice of Velvets and a BIG CHUNK of Lou's solo career.
There's no other way to do it because Lou is that great an artist.
Skip on this morsel and get yourself A REAL MEAL and don't forget to click on that response button and voice with me that you agree that this collection SMELLS LIKE A BUFFALO TURD!!!!!!
WHEW!!!!! MAN IT STINKS!!!!!!!!!
Other Essential Lou/Velvet Albums that every rock fan should also have in their collection=The Velvet Underground and nico,The Velvet Underground, Loaded, New York, Berlin, The Blue mask, Transformer, Rock n' roll animal, and Coney Island Baby.
Ho-Hum "Best of..." package best left on the shelf.......2005-03-23
There are a few things about this "Best of" collection that deserve mention:
1) The photo-montage on the cover shows Lou with longtime "girlfriend" Rachel, a transsexual man who Lou dated for a large part of the mid-70's. Lou has refused to mention a single word about her since about 1978. (She also appeared on the inner jacket of the Sally Can't Dance LP)
2) "Nowhere At All" is a little known non-LP B-side. It's pretty good, actually.
3) Unlike so many of his later single-CD "Hits" collections, this pulls songs from all of his solo LP's (up to 1977, that is) minus Lou Reed Live and Metal Machine Music (MMM hardly classifies as a "Rock" album).
4) The "Intro" section to "Sweet Jane," found on "Rock 'N' Roll Animal" has been edited out. Considering the fact this it is one of the GREAT guitar workouts of any "Live" record EVER, I think this is a terrible mistake. However, in order to fit such an eclectic mix of songs onto a single CD, I guess it was necessary.
What this CD accomplishes is it gives the listener a very basic introduction to 70's Lou Reed. Be warned, the sound quality is ATROCIOUS. I suggest this CD is for "completists" ONLY. For everyone else, try "The Wild Side: Best of Lou Reed" instead. If you REALLY want "Nowhere At All," download it from iTunes.
Walking Wild.......2004-05-11
Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground have always been a bit of an -- shall we say -- acquired taste. But the songs on this WALK ON THE WILD SIDE compilation are very much a showing of Reed's more mainstream side; you could almost call them pleasant. Reed has released a lot of "hits" packages over the years (one must put the word "hits" in quotations, because Reed has found little commercial appeal outside of the song this collection takes its name from), but this particular release is a great way for music fans unfamiliar with Reed's work to find something easy to latch onto before delving deeper into his darker, more disturbing side. This is not too dark as to scare off the newcomer, but it isn't dishonest either.
I'm describing this CD as if it's a fluffy collection of Top 40 sounding tracks. This isn't actually true, of course. Only when compared to the rest of Reed's discography do songs like "Wild Child" and "Sally Can't Dance" seem relatively tame. Which isn't to say there isn't a hard edge here; there is. In particular, the live performances of the two Velvet Underground songs ("Sweet Jane" and "White Light/White Heat") are harsher and louder than the studio versions as originally performed (even if this record used shorter versions than from the live album they came from). The nastier, seedier side is subtle, but present, always lurking just beneath the surface. He's singing about the dirtier side of life: drug-pushers, prostitutes, and their various clientele. He may dress them in the fanciest of melodies, but they're still there.
The release date for this collection was 1977, and it does a pretty good job of showing what sort of stuff Reed was up to in the 70s. Reed was doing a lot of weird stuff back then, both musically and in reference to his chemical intake, and the songs on here reflect that diversity. The glam influences of the David Bowie-produced TRANSFORMER are represented by "Satellite of Love" and "Walk On The Wild Side". Lou's brief flirtation with commercial appeal by emphasizing musical smoothness and "cool" over straight lyrics-and-rock is denoted by the inclusion of the title track from SALLY CAN'T DANCE. Lou-Reed-as-poet is, of course, on display throughout. Even Lou-Reed-as-joker is included: what else are we to make of "New York Telephone Conversation"? And just for kicks, the kid in "Coney Island Baby" who just wanted to play football for the coach has a cameo too. Given the short amount of time available on a single album, we don't get a particularly deep look at Reed's 70s material, but it is a broad one.
WALK ON THE WILD SIDE was the first Lou Reed album I owned, and I've bought many more since then. This is a great hook to get yourself familiar with Reed's stylings before diving in headfirst. Get this collection and then get ready to want to get a lot more.
Lou Reed.......2003-07-16
I owned this cassette back in the early 80s! Loved it! I played it until it fell apart. I'm just now getting around to replacing it with a CD. I do recommend this collection of Lou Reed's best.
A decent, but all-too-short best of........2002-01-06
"Best of Lou Reed" was put together back in the dark ages before CDs expanded the amount of material you could put on an anthology album. As it goes, it's a decent sampling of 1970s era Lou Reed that includes material from most of his albums from that up and down period. It contains "Walk on the Wild Side," his only radio ready hit, as well as "Satelite of Love" and "Wild Child" which are just as accessible. Unfortunately, however, the live version of "Sweet Jane" that made it on to this disk is the edited radio version rather than the far superior extended guitar jam original. On the ples side, the album avoids including any portion of the horrid "Metal Machine Music," which is far and away Lou's worst album.
Overall, this collection is likely best purchased by those who are primarily interested in "Walk on the Wild Side" as a single. There is nothing here that ardent fans probably don't already own. It's a good introduction to Lou Reed's dark genius, but that's all it is.

Superb.......2006-06-28
This is a wonderful compilation documenting Jimmy's broad range of musical interests. It is also a window into an era of urban sophistication that many jazz fans wish they could have touched. These discs feature Wes Montgomery, Oliver Nelson, a very young George Benson, Billy Hart, Clark Terry.....etc, etc.
But on top of it all is my favorite instrument played by the one who defines it. Highly recommended.
Jazz organ at its best.......2004-11-12
This is far and away the best jazz organ CD I have ever heard. When he starts playing The Cat it brings back memories of when I had The Cat record album years ago. My other favorites songs on this CD are Groove Drops and Delon's Blues. If you are looking to start a jazz organ collection this would be an excellent choice to start your collection with.
love that soul groove.......2001-10-19
This is an album that I would have never bought had it not been recommended by amazon. I guess they looked at what I had ordered in the past and thought it would be a good fit.
I buy a lot of jazz, but I'm always looking for something more up tempo with a bit more soul. Jimmy Smith delivers. 25 tracks of killer Hammond organ, and a great band to back him up. You won't be disappointed.
Verve Compilation Of The Champ.......2001-04-13
There have been many Verve compilations of Jimmy Smith's material over the last few years. I like this particular one the best because it is a 2 compact disc set and contains more material. Although some of this material has been reissued (thankfully!) on the individual albums, is still contains material from albums which have not yet been reissued to disc. Jimmy Smith is arguably the best and most influential jazz/blues organist. He was a MAJOR innovator with his instrument and popularized the use of the Hammond B-3 organ in jazz, blues and later through his influences rock music. These recordings span the years 1962 to 1973. The recordings are varied and contain both small group and big band performances. The songs themselves range from blues to jazz to funkier more commercial recordings. There are also some great live recordings from albums which regrettably (Verve are you listening!) have not as yet been reissued. The set contains his most well known Verve tracks "Walk On The Wild Side", "The Cat" and "Organ Grinder's Swing". The set also offers live versions of two of his earlier hits for Blue Note; "The Champ" and "When Johnny Comes Marching Home". Aside from these tracks my favorites include a version of Miles Davis' "Milestones" with Wes Montgomery, "The Boss" live with George Benson, and a version of Muddy Water's blues classic "Got My Mojo Workin". Another stellar musician who appears on this compilation is Kenny Burrell, a guitarist who excels at accompanying an organist. There are a few other Verve cuts I wish they would have included such as versions of "I'm An Old Cowhand", "Bashin'" and remakes of two more of his Blue Note hits "The Sermon" and "The Preacher". However, each person has their own personal favorites. Overall this 2 cd set provides a representative overview of Jimmy Smith's Verve recordings. I recommend it wholeheartedly and suggest further investigations into his earlier classic Blue Note recordings if you enjoy it!
...it sure is funky pop!.......1999-08-09
Jimmy Smith's work on Verve usually takes a back seat to his groundbreaking Bluenote sessions. Yes, a lot of this stuff strays into pop, but it sure is funky pop! & remember, many of his Verve albums were actually equal collaborations with arrangers such as Oliver Nelson, Lalo Schifrin, Al Cohn & Claus Ogerman, with Jimmy as the centerpiece. Even the novelties - few of which appear on this set - were often inspired choices. So I kinda miss "The Theme from The Munsters," Slaughter on 10th Avenue" or "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town." The best Jimmy Smith Verve collection would be the one you make for yourself, but if you need a sampling, try this. & you still get the rave up live "The Boss," featuring George Benson doing what he always did best.

Greed.......2000-12-07
There are so many Lou Reed collections that are better than this one. The original Walk on the Wild Side: The best of Lou Reed has all the songs that this one has, plus a few more, and much cooler album art. With only six extremely common songs, one can only imagine why a record would release this waste-of-time compilation.
Learn From Life.......2000-08-31
Lou Reed has drawn on his friends, background and experiences to create a memorable and engaging album. Living in the world of rock as it was at that time obviously had a great influence in his choice of songs. No mushy sentimental stuff here! Just everyday life from an ordinary guy on the street. Being one of my favorite songwriters from that era, this album is by far his best.
The best Lou Reed collection ever made!.......1999-05-08
Walk on the Wild Side is a great song even though there was only 30 seconds of it to listen to. I only wish the whole entire song was there for my listening. All the other songs that could be sampled were amazing as well. This CD will probably get me really into Lou Reed and Deep Pruple as well.
