Ambrosial at Best, A Little Repetitive at Worst.......2004-05-05
I love the Angels of Venice, but this is not one of my favorite recordings by them. The music on this CD feels a little uneven; the lyrical beauty of pieces such as "China Moon" seem almost too melodic compared to more vocally twisting pieces like the rather eerie lullaby, "Nana." But eerie is very much the feeling that Carol Tatum seems to be focusing on: the sharp steely vocals on "Nana" seem to be the rule rather than the exception -- "Three Nightingales," and "Awake Inside a Dream" carry hallmark haunting voice and speech renditions.
"China Moon," "Lionheart," and "Chanter Mer" (also a vocal piece) are definitely the shining gems on this CD. The other pieces are all rather similar sounding, but still interesting, and worth a listen.
Exotic and poetic.......2002-12-07
"Exotic" and "Poetic" are actually the two sections into which this CD is divided, and the wonderful arrangements therein for harp, flute and cello are just that. The "exotic" numbers are exciting and mysterious, while the poetic selections are simply lovely. The rich sound of these three instruments is wonderfully suited to such divergent styles, lending beauty and grace to all. Featured on this album are the original Angels: Carol Tatum on harp, Suzanne Teng on flute, and Peggy Baldwin on cello, with a host of guest artists rounding out the sound, including Greg Ellis on percussion and Azam Ali on vocals. Two of the "exotic" numbers and one from the "poetic" section were re-recorded for the group's Windam Hill debut, but the rest of the material is unique to this release. The duplicate pieces are some of the Angels' best, though, so they're certainly worth hearing again! The Angels first, mellower release is called "Music for Flute, Harp and Cello". Flutist Suzanne Teng went on to release a CD of her own, "Mystic Journey", and Carol Tatum recently put out her own album, "Music for Harp". All are dreamy, lyrical and nothing short of intoxicating. Those who enjoy the Angels' innovative work might also appreciate that of Nana Simopolous in her releases "Daughters of the Sun" and "After the Moon".
The three latest Carol Tatum CD's Actually.......2002-01-24
Carol has performed in our area several times. I acquired three of her CD's and I just love them. You need to be in certain pensive mood to fully appreciate this wonderful music. Otherwise, just listen to pop, rock or country. Her music is magical, simple yet profound, relaxing yet compelling and inspiring. I would highly recommend any of her albums. Her latest - just her on harp with her keyboards added later - is delightful.
Excellent!!.......2001-01-04
A very good album. I highly recommend this for anyone who likes exotic instrumental music. It has me listening for hours.
Nowhere NEAR "new age" music! And not the least bit "silly".......2000-08-29
With all due respect to the previous reviewer, the music on "Awake..." isn't anywhere CLOSE to "new age" music- not even a distant eighth cousin. I'm not sure what was meant by the "sound" effects being "shonky" but, to MY ears, the effects subtly enhance the many varying moods of the music on this recording. Head Angel Carol Tatum (who also happens to be one of the best arrangers around) keeps the music from "wilting" VERY effectively- it's more of a slow, sweet simmer. The harp, flute, and cello staple of the Angel's sound is enhanced, but not overwhelmed, by percussion, voice, and spare sounding synths. It's a musically brave excursion, one that reveals it's wonders with repeated listens.

Album Description
January Tree marks the third release of Dead Soul Tribe, headed by ex-Psychotic Waltz singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Devon Graves. "Everything I write has a message, an approach to poetry," says Graves. "It's the major function of poetry not to provide answers, but to raise questions - to be thought provoking and to create space for individual interpretations." Mixing dark industrial with metal and progressive rock, Dead Soul Tribe carries the listener further into the abyss of longing and fear with new tracks to make your soul shudder. This release will appeal to any connoisseur of music's dark side.
Customer Reviews:
Progress is Progressing.......2006-02-03
A decent percentage of the modern prog scene is cluttered with many bands that, though technically proficient and to some extent enjoyable, attempt to create a sound that stands alone but ultimately ends up sounded rather dated. Where these bands fail, Dead Soul Tribe flourishes and creates a unique sound that propels them far beyond that of bands of their ilk and puts them up on a pedestal comparable with bands such as Fates Warning. This comparison is only in talent and respect, not in sound, though some of the quieter passages do bring back memories of `Parallels', the sound of `The January Tree' is something of its own, something like an amalgam of King Crimson, a bit of Tool type breakdowns, `Bridge of Sighs' era Robin Trower type riffs, some of the more rock oriented moments of Stabbing Westward, even a dose of mathcore for good measure. This rather unique sounds aided by supreme musicianship makes for one of the best prog albums of the new millennium, even giving last year's phenomenal O.S.I. release a run for its money. Perhaps the strongest part of 'The January Tree' is its strong writing? Crafting powerful and emotional tracks that have remained a constant in my stereo since its release. Along with Riverside and Canvas Solaris, Dead Soul Tribe are the leaders of the modern progressive movement and have crafted an album that will eventually become the benchmark for their specific genre.

Listening to The January Tree? Don't forget a pillow.......2005-11-29
Judging The January Tree from the perspective that the aim in music is to conjure an emotion, I believe this is the perfect album for those who seek to summon the boredom so vividly portrayed in Dead Soul Tribe's music.
Devon Graves has returned with a third album. Although the artist name appearing on the album cover is "Dead Soul Tribe," Graves handles all the writing, recording, and production for this effort (save the drums, played by Adel Moustafa).
This boring, derivative album shows clear Dream Theater influence. Although the album was obviously well thought out, Graves succeeds in evoking the desired image of a dull, leafless tree with his tedious formulaic songwriting. Graves aimed to get a consistent level of quality among the different tracks on his album. He was unfortunately successful in this regard.
I'd give this album a 2/5, since Graves was at least successful in evoking some image in his music.
Sleeping Giant.......2005-11-16
After enjoying the hauntingly powerful "A Murder Of Crows", I was eager to hear this album, and was definitely not disappointed. While the general vibes and atmospheres created are similar to those in DST's previous releases, `"The January Tree" is arguably their most consistent effort.
Graves' formula is simple: take Adel Moustafa, let him strut his talent on the drum kit, write brooding and dark melodies with repetitive catchy guitar lines. Lace this all with powerful vocals and poetic lyrics. Simple. The difficulty Graves faces, as with a lot of other artists who write all of the music by themselves, is the risk of repetition. But on "The January Tree" Graves is spot on, like he was in...well...his career spanning discography, including ex-band Psychotic Waltz and DST's earlier releases. He is one exceptional talent.
The music is simply top notch progressive metal. The angst-ridden pounding riffs and brutal vocals of the opener "Spiders & Flies" instantly recall the kind of emotional force typical of Tool's work. The eccentric "Sirens" is an interesting piece fusing elements of jazz guitar, commanding riffs and a wonderful echoing effect on Graves' vocals. The chorus is simply killer too. "Love of Hate" is another great example of Graves using the basics to tremendous effects, containing only two repeated sections, the song is just straight forward...no messing metal. Again Graves' niche for a superb, heartfelt chorus is present. "Why?" is possibly my favourite DST song to date, and the definitive moment on the album. Everything is just wondrous here, especially the slow burning, ultimately progressive use of crescendos to create a dark, sinister atmosphere. "Wings Of Faith" is an experimental track seeing the use of industrial styled guitar and drum sounds, with a heavy focus on vocal sampling and vocal effects. It works though, and is another high point to the album. After more equally gleaming tracks comes another lovely surprise, the ballad "Just Like A Timepiece" which is taken from Graves' solo career under his former name Buddy Lackey (Psychotic Waltz days). The vocal melodies are complemented perfectly by Graves' superb flute playing and simple, yet effective guitars. Great way to finish one of the best prog metal albums in years.
I highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys a lil bit of substance to his or hers metal, or simple admirers of good progressively styled music.
They just keep getting better and better..........2005-07-07
After A Murder of Crows, which shaved off much of the fat from their self titled debut release, Dead Soul Tribe come back and bring the fat back in - but this time make it much more organized. The industrial influences, which were basically come on A Murder of Crows are back (the song "Wings of Faith") as well as a more varied instrumental approach (The Jethro Tull style flute on "Just Like A Timepiece").
But just as much as all of that changed, much stayed the same. DST are still playing dark, constrained prog in the style of Tool. Devon's voice is still amazing. He can still write amazing songs. They still have the sound of no instrument standing out but rather they work as a divine whole (a trait that is found in many bands where all the music is written by one person). And the Danny Carry style drumming is still there.
Seeing as how they have improved by a significant amount with each release despite only being a year apart from each other, I am eagerly awaiting Dead Soul Tribes next release... though it is hard to imagine them improving on The January Tree. Highly recommended for fans of Tool.
"We're caught in a web and we're eaten alive".......2004-12-01
4.5 stars. While I still think "A Murder Of Crows" is Deadsoul Tribe's benchmark album, if there was ever a band in which I would recommend newcomers buy two albums simultaneously it would be the aforementioned release and "The January Tree". "A Murder of Crows" doesn't have the punchy production value of "The January Tree" but it does have a more organic approach to the songwriting using piano, flute, acoustic instruments much more often than the hard-driving guitar attack of the follow-up album. "The January Tree" also incorporates more industrial stylings and keyboard effects than before; and while I prefer a more organic sound the improved production sound on "The January Tree" is a major plus that very nearly levels the playing field between the two recordings. All in all, both albums are worth buying for different reasons. Regardless of the differences, both albums hold great amounts of excellent music.

Imposing Album From Art-Rock Phenomenon.......2007-03-14
Devon Graves, vocalist and driving force behind Dead Soul Tribe, really can't seem to make a bad album. His uniquely dark yet philosophical vision lends an almost dignified air to the proceedings on this fourth release from his excellent and highly underrated band.
Dead Soul Tribe are often compared to Tool, and they do share certain similarities- but Dead Soul Tribe tend to be more varied and diverse in their style, and seem more dynamic and engaging to me, as well as less pretentious. Tool fans would certainly find a lot to sink their teeth into here (and I actually like this album more than the latest Tool release), but Dead Soul have their own unique sound and aesthetic that is quite intelligent and thought-provoking, full of social commentary and rebellious cynicism.
Full of excellent songwriting, pulsing, creative guitar that can be both quite heavy at times, yet quite melodic and placid as well, and the incredible vocal stylings and creative direction of the inimitable Devon Graves, this album is a musical triumph which grows and breathes upon repeated spins, revealings layers of subtlety and nuance. Highly recommended for any fan of thoughtful, dark art rock such as Tool, Porcupine Tree, A Perfect Circle, etc.
The New Tool?.......2007-01-03
For me Deadsoul Tribe's strength is that they remind me of Tool, one of my favorite bands. They have a dark morose sound and lyrics, a similar disjointed, syncopated style, a heavy stop and go drum and guitar beat with unusual melodies, somewhat de-emphasizing the vocals for the sake of the strong instrumentation. That's not to say that, as a singer, Graves doesn't have his moments. He has a pleasant mid to high pitched voice and a decent style that together, with echo chambers and dual tracks, happens to compliment the music.
With each progressive release by both bands, it's gotten to where Deadsoul Tribe sounds more like Tool to me than Tool. Well at least somebody sounds like Tool.
If you have never heard of these guys or know little of them, I suspect that is about to change! For fans of Tool, Nine Inch Nails, Filter and Type O negative.
Great vocal prog metal, unfortunately with mastering issues.......2006-04-22
This is my first foray into the Dead Soul Tribe and I can quite honestly say I like what I hear. Whether you call it prog-metal or art metal, the sound is relatively unique and thankfully different than the usual mainstream hard rock / metal music these days. Devon Graves is definitely a gifted vocalist able to emote warmth and subtlety one moment and roar with power the next moment. At times, he reminds me a lot of Maynard James Keenan from Tool, especially on the second track. I really like the drumming by Adel Moustafa who isn't content with just playing the same, basic beats throughout each song. He adds a great deal of different styles and fills to keep the percussion interesting and varied while at the same time adding a great deal of texture to each composition.
I have only one complaint about this recording, and that has to do with the production and mixing. One aspect of Prog music that I really like is that it is generally produced and mixed better than mainstream music. Like a good deal of recordings these days, everyone wants to mix their albums as hot and loud as possible. Unfortunately, this usually results in clipping. As good as the production seems on this album, the mixing is so darned hot that it clips in spots. As an audiophile, I find this most annoying. The most obvious spot of clipping occurs at the 4:40 mark of Waiting in Line. While the clipping isn't nearly as bad and obvious as on Rush's album Vapor Trails or Uriah Heep's album Sea of Light, it's still annoying in that it should not have been necessary for this album to have been mixed so hot.
More Great Brooding Prog Metal From DsT.......2006-01-16
`The Dead Word' marks DsT's fourth release, after the self-titled debut, which was certainly fresh and interesting, the next two albums `A Murder of Crows' and `The January Tree' rooted DsT's position in the progressive rock/metal world. Controlled by the highly inventive multi-instrumentalist Devon Graves (ex-Psychotic Waltz, also a fine band) DsT's music explores dark and bleak soundscapes with a unique style. Comparisons to Tool are often made, and one can certainly see why, Graves's voice at times has the same nasally quality of Keenan's, and the drummer Adel Moustafa certainly has that tribal flavour about his playing, similar in some ways to Tool's great Danny Carey. The general style of playing is far different from Tool however, the songs are generally shorter, more `trimmed' and don't have that improvised feeling to a lot of Tools work.
As for the `lack' of diversity from the previous DsT releases, seemingly the main criticism of this album, I can certainly understand this as Graves' formula has not really changed. This does not detract from the music in my opinion however, DsT have found a niche in the prog world...it works...why change it? Perhaps I would like to see Graves try something truly progressive, such as a 10minute plus track, I believe this may well bring the subtle DsT sound together with the heavy climatical moments.
As for the music on here, there really isn't anything to criticise, it has everything I'd want from DsT. The most notable songs are the brooding `Flight On An Angels Wings' where Graves really unleashes the vocals towards the end, the infectious melodies of `Don't You Ever Hurt?', the catchy almost pop of `Some Sane Advice', the experimental `My Dying Wish' (similar to the experimental `Wings Of Faith' on the last album) and the dark, tense `Fist Full Of Bended Nails'.
For those interested in progressive metal, or progressive rock with a darker edge to it, I would seriously recommend any of the four DsT albums to date.
Not bad, but not great.......2005-11-30
Devon's last two albums (Crows and Tree) are two of my favorite albums of the 21st century, so far. There was never any doubt in my mind that I would buy this new album, then, and I'm sure I'll buy the next one (assuming we are lucky enough that he continues to make more albums.)
However, all I can think of is that this particular album was just rushed - the material wasn't quite ready and the mix sounds a bit off to me in ways I'm not sure I can adequately describe, other that it isn't as polished as the last two albums. Some of this material definitely sounds like a re-hash of the 2002 release, so sort of a step backwards in a sense. Having said that, "Some Sane Advice" moves into my own personal "Best of" DST list, while "The Long Ride Home" and "Let the Hammer Fall Down" make honorable mention. Dead Soul Tribe fans shouldn't take all this to mean I don't think this album isn't worth getting. I just suggest one has less expectations going in. Perhaps it was only natural there would be a let down, after doing four albums in four years - having one good one, two great ones, and now a pretty good one ain't bad!
However, for those new to Dead Soul Tribe, definitely pick up January Tree, first, A Murder of Crows second, and then get this one. (Or, heck, just buy them all now and listen to them in the correct order. :)

expectations ruin everything.......2006-01-17
i couldn't believe some of the reviews for this album. thankfully for me this was the first golden palominos album i heard, so this was the benchmark when i approached this oh so holy 'Pure'. seriously though, from both conduits, if you are expecting something from either of these albums, you are bound to be dissappointed.
the buzz around this album was also because of something else nicole did during that time period, mainly a track off of KMDFM's XTORT. something she had meantioned in an interview was that every song on the album is about a victim. from that stand point, how can one expect it not to be a "dark album".
honestly i think it is one of the funniest albums around. suspend your disbelief and put yourself in any of those possitions. lets start with an easy one, like victim. maybe its just me, but i would not have tried to goto sleep. before she is even dead, she has given up and imagine's her own death.
perhaps i am just to prejuduced for the album, because some ten years later, this is still the number one thing i use in any radio show i do, and still the number one thing requested by people, for songs and gifts.
"wake up ... breathe ... keep breathing".......2005-07-31
The last Golden Palominos album I heard was Drunk With Passion, which I really liked ... but this is something entirely different altogether. The opening track, "Victim", is truly disturbing, and the rest of the album stays true to that motif. When I first heard it, I was very affected and actually thought that I wouldn't be able to listen to it again for awhile, but that evening I had to hear it again, as I did the next day. If you don't mind contemplating the dark underbelly of humanity as well as the lofty aspirations; if you reflect on the portent as well as the promise, then you may really enjoy this. I definitely do.
dark, yes. too dark? i think not.........2004-02-12
i bought this cd after reading the lyrics to "holy" and having them stuck in my head for weeks. the album was a million times better than i'd imagined, especially after reading reviews that claimed it was "too dark" and you "wouldnt want to listen to it more than once".
i completely disagree - and to those who say it isn't catchy - i think it is! i am always running around with lines in my head... it may not be melodic, but it is rhythmic and driving and intense.
my best friend was murdered, and "victim" is very difficult for me to listen to, but "holy" is worth the price of the album, "ride" is genius, and "metal eye" is entrancing.. everything on this disc is art.
Golden showers of praise!.......2003-09-12
This slab of GPs is very different from PURE, but equally as good.
What's good about this album (for me) is it's ability to make you set the words and music to an imaginery film that gets projected from your innermost self across the back of your eyelids. Something Kubrick-esque? Same ballpark ... depends on you imagination.
You'll really like it if you get on with Recoil (who Blackman has also worked with) - the same raw story telling over a meticulously crafted soundtrack. Broken loops, luscious pads, fragments of narrative and foley.
This album is a selfish affair - by that I mean you need to listen to it alone - a great album for the personal stereo or long journey. You almost want to keep this album a secret. Wish that only you were privy to it's content, but it won't be long before you can't help but want to share it with your friends. They'll love it too.
Quite a disappointment.......2002-08-17
Dead Inside is a flat, immature version of Pure, one of my favorite discs and the best Palomino release to date. This is odd as it came out two years after Pure was released. Dead Inside is dark in tone, almost a goth feel to much of it, with too much bass (though some interesting rythyms) and it seems poorly mixed. The songs are all about the misapperception and abuse of power in our relationships with ourselves, with others, and with our urban environments. Most of it is fairly sophmoric, as if the group forgot all the Bataille readings that led them to write the haunting lyrics of Pure.
The album is worth a listen, but it isn't one to own.

Schizophrenic Beauty???.......2006-04-11
This is one of the most "scary" beautiful recordings I've ever treated my two ears to! I've been a lover of progressive and/ or metal music for well over twenty years and things tend to be the same ol'/ same ol' after while. This is a very fresh style to me, very crunchy guitars and great haunting, acoustic embellishments. The singer,Devon Graves, is a welcome sound. Sorry, but I'm a little past the growling, screeching, unintelligible lyrics and vocals so commonly associated with modern- day metal. Devon's vocals are hauntingly powerful and emotional at the same time. So, if you're looking for an album that doesn't sound the same all the way through, has plenty of diversity, excellent sound and musicianship AND balls to spare...this is a great place to start. Enjoy!
An album showing potential but lacking in cohesion........2005-07-07
With his first album after leaving his previous band, Psychotic Waltz, Devon Graves pulls together an odd mishmash of music. From the first two songs, which are full of samples and cruncy repetitive guitars and sound like they could have been taken straight from Ministry's discography, you start thinking you will get an industrial album. But after that you get an odd mix of accoustic guitars, flutes, industrial, and progressive elements.
And therein lies the albums weakness. The only 2 things that remain constant throughout the album is Devon's superb voice, and how all the instruments mix together perfectly with none really standing out (something seen quite often in albums arranged by one person).
While this album does have its merits, I would suggest listening to The January Tree or A Murder of Crows if you have not heard anything by Dead Soul Tribe yet.
Pure genius!!.......2003-07-29
Oh my God, I didn't know something could possibly be THIS good!!
What can I say, I'm speechless. I will sell all my other CDs and listen only th Dead Soul Tribe for the rest of my life! Thank you Jesus.
Defintely worth a listen.......2003-03-27
Being a huge fan of Psychotic Waltz, I came across this by accident and found that it was Buddy's new band. I believe he does all the guitar work, and is pretty good. There are some very creative riffs and "moods" throughout the album. Don't be fooled, it isn't anything like Psychotic was, but still a good album overall. Looking forward to more from these guys.....

Excellent musicianship...poor lyrics/vocals.......2006-09-15
Being a music junkie, I am always looking for the next amazing, mind blowing thing. Reading reviews that a band sounds like one of the best bands on this planet, it is hard NOT to want to check them out. So, obviously I instantly desired to hear this band upon hearing that they sound somewhat like Tool/Jethro Tull. Call me silly, stupid or whatever...
On first listen, one might make a slight comparison to a certain amazing band that is blazing their own trail under the progressive metal moniker with tribal beats and the best lyricist and vocalist in the biz. But further listens into "A Murder of Crows" reveals a band that stands on their own and really does not sound like any other band. Sure, you can tell that Dead Soul Tribe probably listen to Tool a lot, but thats about the extent of it.
"A Murder of Crows" isn't one of the best albums of all time, or even of the year it was released, but it sure is one that you need to check out.
Overall, the drumming is excellent. Technical and Tribal beats with modern rock drumming, its a nice touch. The bass lines are average, not really in the lime light, but decent, thundering and heard. Guitar riffs range from NU-Metal-ish to progressive metal, with the occasional solo here and there. There is a heavy amount of effects and pedals used for the guitars which is a nice touch.
These are the great qualities.
The vocals and the lyrics absolutely suck. I am sorry to say it but, this singer just doesn't have the emotion or the range of vocal power to pull off what he is trying to accomplish. But hey, at least he is trying. The Maynard James Keenan comparisons are not true and confounded at best. It's not fair to compare any singer to one of the greatest of all time, your just making this singer seem even worse.
The lyrics seem amateur and childish at best, and kind of forced, as does his singing style. I would say that the vocals/lyrics are the worst aspect of this decent band.
I give them four stars for their musicianship, they do have a unique sound. But I dock them one star for their horible lyrics/vocals, which are somewhat annoying and grating and poorly mixed most of the time.
Seriously though, Dead Soul Tribe have their own sound, and it is worth checking out. Just don't believe the hype about them sounding like Tool, because you will be severely disappointed.
Dead Soul Tribe have a unique blend of tribal essence/rock/progressive rock/metal that holds its own.
As far as making comparisons to other bands, its a really bad thing to do. I always read reviews for bands that state "they sound like Opeth" blah blah blah...and then when I check out the band, they sound NOTHING like them. Its the same case here, these guys hold nothing to Tool. Sure, they may have an influence by them, but that is it.
Truth is, we always want to find other bands that sound like our favorite artists because our favorite artists do it so well that it makes us hunger for more of the like and similar. I have been on a massive quest to find similar bands to Opeth, Tool and the Deftones and I have failed miserably, because they are second to none, and any band that tries to sound like them is going to pale in comparison.
If you really want to check out a copycat band that is trying to be Tool, check out Counterfist. Their music is really nice though they try to sound like Tool too much. But they're singer sucks worse than this singer.
This Band Needs To Be Heard.......2005-10-31
This was my first introduction to the world of Devon Graves, I'd heard all the comparisons to Tool, one of my favourite bands, and being a prog metal fan, it seemed a logical choice. The music is powerful, full of some great riffs, but its Graves' vocals and lyrics (poetic theme of crows carrying the souls of the dead) that complete the picture, and what a picture it is.
The album starts wonderfully with the two parts `Feed' piece, one of DST's finest songs to date. Everything is on display here, some simple but well executed guitar playing, highly technical drumming from the skilled Adel Moustafa, and of course haunting melodies sung to perfection by Graves' piercing vocals. `Messenger' is one of my favourites on the album, it has a rather monotonous riff played throughout, but the vocal melodies and lyrics are just stunning, surprisingly `feel good' for such a sinister album. `Some Things You Can't Return' is the defining moment to the album, following the themes of the lost souls concept, but its Graves' vocal delivery that simply floored me, beautiful yet penetrating. Songs such as `Garden Made Of Stones' `Angels In Vertigo' and `I'm Not Waving' hold the album together perfectly. The last touch of greatness comes in the raucous `Crows On The Wire' with its tension building intro, huge riff and catchy melodies, a certain high point.
Overall this is one fine album that doesn't get nearly enough recognition. For fans of prog rock/metal who enjoy the likes of Tool, Pain Of Salvation, Nevermore...
Also see Graves' former legendary band 'Psychotic Waltz'.
A more streamlined effort than Devon's first release........2005-07-07
A Murder of Crows, the second album from Dead Soul Tribe (basically Devon Graves), sees Devon recruiting an amazing drummer to complement his amazing voice. Alread with that addition, AMoC has an advantage over his first album. It is also much more structured, while the S/T album sounded like an odd mishmash of Ministry, Tool, and Jethro Tull, A Murder of Crows gives Dead Soul Tribe a more refined sound. Comparison's to Tool can be drawn instantly - Devon, like Maynard, has an amazing voice; both bands play dark music; the drumming is similar and both bands can orchestrate amazing build ups that are spine chilling.
That being said, Dead Soul Tribe and Tool have one key difference - the main emotion being used. While Tool are mostly angry, Dead Soul Tribe are either hopeful or bleak. Devon's few attempts at anger on this album come off rather weak, but the way he changes his voice to suit every other emotion works perfectly.
Overall a good album that fans of Tool, rock, or prog should check out... or just check it out to listen to Devon's amazing voice.
The cover art is better than the music.......2005-06-24
When I saw the cover art to this album I nearly wet myself. I also made the classic mistake of judging an album by it's artwork instead of letting the music carry it's own merit. I must say that many people here have invited comparisons of Dead Soul Tribe to Tool, and that's an unfair comparison, not to mention a silly reason to check out a band. If you scramble for a band because somebody you don't know says it sounds kinda like something else you love, you ought to wonder "why don't they come up with their own sound instead of trying to be such-and-such". Most of the time Dead Soul Tribe doesn't sound anything like Tool, and if you're here because you've been told they do, then be warned. On this album, everything is mid-tempo, harmonized, and drenched in drama and atmosphere. The singer does not emote quite as good as you've been led to believe by some other reviews on Amazon. In fact, much of the vocal dynamics, (or lack thereof), seem derivative and forced. He's in terrible control of his tremolo, for one thing, and while I like harmonized backing vocals, they are used here almost randomly and therefore excessively.
That said, I do recognize potential here, and perhaps they get better on future recordings. I just wish the cover art was matched up with a better album... seems like a waste here.
Dead Soul Tribe.......2005-06-21
I have owned this album for nearly two years, and I still love every minute of it. This is not a band that you hear a great deal about, but they are terrific none theless. They bring to mind equal parts Tool and Jethro Tull. Go pick up the album, it won't disappoint!

Necessary for Fans.......2006-09-06
"Stop Whispering" was a highlight of the Radiohead's debut album, Pablo Honey. If you don't already own that album, you should pick it up before considering investing in this CD single. If you already own that album, though, and really enjoy Radiohead's earlier material, this is well worth picking up for the bonus tracks. "Pop Is Dead," especially, is one of the finest things from this period in their career; more conventional than their later music, but fine in its own right, and hinting at new directions they would begin pursuing on their next album, The Bends.

Beautiful music........2007-01-10
I sat back with the lights dimmed and a cup of hot coffee and enjoyed the beautiful haunting music of years gone by. Memories abound.
5 stars for performance, 4 stars due to omissions.......2006-08-29
Why doesn't this get a perfect five stars?
Simple reason.
The producers at Silva, for wahtever reason, decided to cut down their SHE suites and Hands of the Ripper suites.
On the previous Hammer releases, "Draculas - Classic Horror Films", released in 1993, recorded in 1989, they had seven additional minutes of "Hands of the Ripper" that could have been included on this set.
Additionally, The Devil Rides Out: Film Music of James Bernard, released in 1997, recorded in 1995 and 1996 had about a minute more of additional music from SHE, PLUS about seven minutes worth of suites from Quatermass and X: The Unknown.
Both discs in this new re-issue round out at around 68 minutes, so there was room for some of these omissions.
Silva Screen gets big kudos for a reissuing these recordeings in the remastered HDCD format, but I don't understand these omissions. In fact, one of the tracks included, "Vampire Hunter" isn't even from a Hammer film, and its the only recording on this collection not on previous Silva CD's.
Again, 5 stars for the performances, the 1989 performances with Neil Richardson and the Philharmonia are fantastic. (Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus.)
Additionally, The Westminster Philharmonic under the baton of Kenneth Alwyn do an excellent job as usual (Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, She, THe Abominable Snowman, Quatermass II and Curse of the Werewolf.) Finally, the City of Prague Philharmonic, who get a bad rap more often than they deserve round out hte album and IMHO, deliver the goods, under the trusty batons of Paul Bateman (Scars of Dracula, Frankenstein Created Woman, additionally, Bateman also plays the piano solo on Kiss of the Vampire.) and Nic Raine (The Devil Rides Out, One Million Years BC, When Dinosuars Ruled the Earth, Creatures The World Forgot, The Vampire Hunter)
I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.
Much thanks to producers David Wishart, Eric Tomlinson and James Fitzpatrick and recording engineers Mike Ross-Trevor, John Luard Timperley and Jan Holzner for contributing to these fine historical film music recordings.
"Hammer & Silva...raises the hair on the back of your neck".......2002-04-09
Silva Screen takes us on tour through the castles of Transylvania with a collection of
outstanding scores from James Bernard on Disc One ~ "DRACULA" (1958)..."KISS OF
THE VAMPIRE" (1964)..."DRACULA PRINCE OF DARKNESS"
(1966)..."FRANKENSTEIN CREATED WOMAN" (1967)..."THE DEVIL RIDES OUT"
(1968)..."DRACULA HAS RISEN FROM THE GRAVE" (1968)..."THE SCARS OF
DRACULA" (1970)..."TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA" (1970)...even though the
blood doesn't flow as easily in "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", the score from Bernard is
seductive, sensual to say the least for "creatures of the night", masked ball scene blends
atmospheric trance-masquerade themes, intoxicating main title is hauntingly mesmerizing with
"VAMPIRE RHAPSODY", just listen to the piano solo from our character in the film Carl
Ravna (Barry Warren), son of Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman) along with daughter Sabena Ravna
(Jacqueline Wallis), a cult of vampires in early 20th century Bavarian, praying on a young
honeymoon couple...Bernard's rhapsody captures the listeners heart and BLOOD!
Let's look at Disc Two with the other Hammer themes and their composers ~ "THE
ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN" (1957-Humphrey Searle)..."QUATERMASS II"
(1957-James Bernard)..."CURSE OF THE WEREWOLF" (1960-Benjamin
Frankel)..."CURSE OF THE MUMMY'S TOMB" (1964-Carlo Martelli)..."SHE"
(1965-James Bernard)..."ONE MILLION YEARS B.C." (1966-Mario
Nascimbene)..."WHEN DINOSAURS RULED THE EARTH" (1969-Mario
Nascimbene)..."HANDS OF THE RIPPER" (1971-Christopher Gunning)..."VAMPIRE
CIRCUS" (1971-David Whitaker)..."VAMPIRE HUNTER" (2000-James
Bernard)...difficult as it may be, there is a stand out ~ "THE CURSE OF THE
WEREWOLF", fine direction from Terence Fisher (director) with an outstanding cast Oliver
Reed (Leon-the Werewolf), Clifford Evans (Alfredo), Yvonne Romain (Servant Girl) and
Catherine Feller (Christina), Hammer's departure from the old stereotype of the beast is
refreshing, Reed's performance as the tormented sole, from man to wolf is touching, the score
by Ben Frankel is tense building at it's best, to say the least, setting the tone and mood for the
transformation with counterpoints is stimulating, inclusive orchestration development for what
lies ahead during a full moon.
Without a doubt the highlight pick hands down is "SHE", composer James Bernard gives of
himself without question, the SUITE takes the orchestra into lilting melodic exercises with
percussion chiming in, the harmonies are hypnotic blends of textured fabric, listen as The
Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn display stirring strings and
a solo harp run the scales in "THE ETERNAL FLAME AND THE DESTRUCTION OF
SHE", hold-fast arrangement has haunting echoes of Bernard's constant theme, with a final
beat from a drum in the percussion section.
Must make mention the cast of players that made this possible ~ The Philharmonia Orchestra,
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra ~ and
their various conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Neil
Richardson...supported by the illustrious staff from Silva Screen Records LTD ~ Reynold da
Silva (executive producer), David Stoner (associate producer), Gareth Williams (Dolby
Surround/HDCD Mastering) and of course James Fitzpatrick (compilation producer), who
has the knack of developing quality in every Silva Screen release...similar to "A History Of
Horror:From Nosferatu To The Sixth Sense" (SSD-1111/2CD Set), guaranteed to raise the
hair on the back of your neck!
Total Time: Disc One 68:01 on 14 Tracks & Disc Two 68:46 on 14 Tracks ~ Silva Screen
Records SSD-357 ~ (2002)

"Unnoticed" is a rich textured melodic journey into melancholy and joy, not to far akin from his fellow Seattle native Elliot Smith.
Reminiscent of artist like Michael Penn and the Finn Brothers. This is Jesse's first true Solo project, opting to loose the moniker of "the World Inside" that graced his first two post Poor old Lu recordings "Roobrik and "Untitled".

Product Description
Gorgeous, stunning, stellar, the superlative flow! We loved (and many of you joined us here) the last one, Unnoticed but "The Corner Of An Unlit World" is another level in Jesse Sprinkle`s world. Everything that was on "Unnoticed" is here in spades, but the material has more sharper focus, the melodies ring a bit longer, the vocals move the soul even deeper and musician ship and arranging add new textures and nuances. All over there`s rich, hook-laden pop tunes smothered in gorgeous vocal harmonies, highly textured music-scapes, incredible melodies and excellent arrangements!
As with "Unnoticed", fans of early Posies, harmony-ridden, acoustic-driven pure pop, REJOICE! It`s hard to find a band that better epitomizes what why so many folks fell so hard for The Posies during their "Failure" and "Dear 23" period(those Hollies-esque harmonies!) than inside Sprinkle`s music. Bsides those folks, fans of Michael Penn, Neil Finn, Ice Cream Hands and the those rare moments when Elliot Smith made happy pop music are going to, simply, be smitten and fall hard for this one. Sprinkle used to be in the band Poor Old Lu, who released some legendary, but hard to find albums in the 90`s. Soaring open chorded strums and blended vocals fulfill the connection to all the aforementioned bands. Crisp guitar lines and rich, soothing vocals urge the complete success of this project clearly into focus, opening up fresh pop vistas of effortless strumming and lovely melodies. IT does not get much better than this for fans of acoustically, chiming, ringing power pop than this. Lyrically rich, the songs rely on sugar-sweet harmonies on every second of this CD. Extremely Highly Recommended!!!

I can't believe nobody's said anything yet!.......2006-08-25
This album is excellent, plain and simple. Jesse has proven time and time again that he could easily break into the mainstream if he chose to and more than likely top the artists that are already there.
Now, christian listeners might be shocked to hear the slight bit of profanity in "Over Land and Dimly Lit Skies," but Jesse himself tells me that this album is just an honest expression, a venting, of the things he was feeling at the time, and that removing such a word as f*** would compromise the song. I, for one, am refreshed by this complete honesty, you don't see a lot of that in music today or in the world in general really.
I believe my favorite songs off of this album would be "Jimmy" and "The Beauty of Pain and the Life Which Springs From Death."
