4 out of 5 stars drifting along with Fridge.......2005-10-10

deep, colourful displays of pastoral audio smattered with organic beats and a warm atmosphere; not to mention a keen sense of melody. at times, displaying a jazzy feel and at other times a more post rocking dub sensibility. this is certainly too active to be considered 'downtempo;' but the music is certainly moody. perfect headphone music for a rainy afternoon.

4 out of 5 stars acoustic ascensions still amounts to postrock.......2003-08-19

I quite enjoy this album. but it is indefiantly postrock, that hated breed of futuristic avant art rock. Use acoustic and real instruments (not samplers) to mimic what electronic instruments do, climb, create textural atypical/memorable melodies. This music makes you feel like it doesn't take any talent but a vision to create beautiful audio moments. Obligatory nods to Tortoise may seem obvious, but when you listen to this sort of music too often it all fades away (in addition to the seminal postrockers from Chicago, tie this to Parlour, Do Make Say Think, and Mice Parade). Of particular interest is Four Tet, the electronic version of this audio wonderland. But I wouldn't give this four stars on behalf of its absolute repetiveness. I prefer something more diverse that moves further and further... The remixes are quite interesting, and have that driving almost-techno beats-beats-beats feel. There is no doubt that this music is colorful, I just think Four Tet is more moving despite its lack of real instruments.

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing.......2002-06-19

Absolutely essential domestic reissue of Fridge's 1999 instrumental masterpiece. Masterful mix of electronica and rock that brings to mind post-rockers like Tortoise, but with minimal high-brow. Second disc includes tracks from even harder-to-find import EP's, as well as two previously unreleased remixes. Also highly recommended from this period is Fridge-man Kieran Hebden's solo project Four Tet. The 'Glasshead' EP is amazing, too. Kinda like electric Miles Davis with bigger beats.

4 out of 5 stars Mogwai who?.......2002-04-10

While the Mogwai comparisons are a little easy (and inevitable), they are a little misleading. Eph is 8 tracks of jazzy and minimalist instrumentals that stand on their own, and make for great just-driving-around music.

4 out of 5 stars Mogwai with more production and synths.......2000-05-03

I bought this CD because I'd heard one song. That song was 'Ark' and it's one of the best post-rock instrumental music I've heard. The album isn't as fantastic as 'Ark'. but it still is very good.

The sound is just incredible and it's the best produced album of this style I've heard, besides Tortoise's 'TNT'.

If you liked Tortoise's 'TNT', Mogwai's 'CODY' or Trans Am's 'Futureworld'...this is something for you.

4 out of 5 stars Refreshingly new sound from this electronic instrumental.......1999-07-30

This is pure instrumental music. It is also electronic ambient, and has an experimental and free form quality that gives it its freshness. In the forefront, the jazz style drum rhythms keep you guessing as to the natural beat, and the spacey motifs are reminiscent of Orbital. There is plenty to listen to in the structure of the music, and the opening track, Ark, has an irresistible feel of perpetual motion, driven on by a persistent monotonic bass-line and slow heavy drumbeat with crashing cymbals. The final track, Aphelion demonstrates inventive use of bowed instruments, and is a true masterpiece. My only gripe is that the whole experience ends in just over 40 minutes, hence the 4 stars.
