The best thing to come out of Chicago .......... Naked Raygun.......2006-10-22
I can still remember the first time hearing Soldier's requiem. The melody, the drive, and enough whoa's kept me wanting more. I had to go and have everything that Naked Raygun has ever done. We hear alot about the scenes of New York, DC, Boston, and the entire West Coast back in the 1980's. But rarely do we hear about a scene in Chicago, which in my mind, was one of the best going on during the mid eighties. So many great bands like Out of Order, Big Black, The Effigies, Naked Raygun made quite a impression and put the town of Chicago on the map. If you love infectious melodies and music with a message, I suggest you pick up the most underrated hardcore punk acts to come out of the eighties, Naked Raygun.
Blade Runner, Missiles, and Working 9-5.......2006-08-29
I am now 32 and first heard NR in skate videos in the late 80's. I owned the Homestead versions of "Throb, Throb" and "All Rise" as well as the re-issued "Jettison" and "Understand". I ultimately came to the conclusion that while this band had some great anthems, such as "Home of the Brave" and "Never Follow", they were a little too weird for my taste, and we had to part ways. It's only been recently that I have begun to reevaluate my musical taste (ditching most of the insipid "punk" that I clung to for years) and rediscovered some things which I had once let slip through my fingers. In the process I have come back to NR with a fresh outlook, have begun to understand what they were about, and have come to see that this is a great American band, regardless of genre.
This is a band with a deep mythology, they inspire great loyalty and nostalgia, and carry their own culture. Yeah, they were a "punk" band, but "punk" in the truest since. They didn't dress like morons, or adhere to a bunch of hollow slogans, these were salt of the earth guys, who I'm sure felt deeply and loved hard and it shows in their music. There was no one songwriter, all contributed, yet there is a central theme and identity to the band. I didn't get it as a kid; now that I've lived a little, I see what they're about. There's a sense of loss and longing in there songs, a working class sensibility (again, in the purest sense of the word "working class", I'm not throwing that around lightly) and a certain despair at society, but with great heart and a hope still there. There's also something vaguely traditional about the these guys' vibe, very midwest and hard to put into words, but if you understand what I'm talking about, no explanation is needed. There is also a thread of sci-fi that runs through their work, as well as a bit of militarism. When it all comes together, it's just right, but it took me almost 20 yrs to get it.
Ever had a secret you didn't ever want to share but..........2005-11-16
Naked Raygun is like my dirty little secret... Since I first stumbled on to them in 1986 (Throb Throb) on cassette I was hooked. Listening to Jettison though is like a highlight reel of the worlds greatest band. Jeff's vocals are simply undeniably catchy and I dare you to find another "punk" band who was both this talented and musically accessable. Ever Naked Raygun album remains as awesome today as the day they were released but I am one of the lucky ones who saw this band play in their prime and nothing beats them live if only a DVD was available!!! Anyway for those of us wishing for a new Naked Raygun album check out "The Bomb" (Jeff Pezzati's new project)(www.bomb1.com) it's different than the gun but great and you can hear alittle raygun sneak out here and there...for me Naked Raygun was the secret I never wanted to share but felt I couldn't keep to myself...I also highly recommend "Treason" which is home to the greatest Raygun song of all "Hips swingin'" -...what else can I say don't be cheap buy it I swear you'll be missing out on the greatest album ever recorded if you don't...
if only amazon had a 6th star...
One of my favorite albums of all-time........2005-01-27
Just look at the cover art.
I can't think of another album in the world that has cover art that tells you precisely what the music on the album is going to sound like. This record blew me away in 88 and I still get pumped when I hear that first chord in "Soldier's Requiem."
Kids-- tell your parents you need this immediately. Don't argue with me, just do it. Music like this is no longer made.
Side A of Jettison.......2005-01-14
...is completely flawless. One of the best things ever recorded, and a huge inspiration. Side B I don't really listen to so much (except for the stellar cover of Suspect Device) but that doesn't matter because side A is one of the best recordings of all time. And the lyrics...Oh, man...

Ahhh... the old school..........2004-03-21
This one brings back the memories! Me and the boys headin down to the "Riv" (the Riviera) to see Raygun play... skankin in the pit... plastic rayguns falling from the cieling... the good old days... This album is one of the quinticential albums of the 80's Chicago punk scene, along with Big Black and The Jesus Lizard. An absolute must have!
Classic Album.......2003-12-27
This has to be N.R. best, hands down. There is only one clucker in the bunch, "Mr Gridlock", and that is only half bad. Each is great to sing along with and to blow out your speakers and yr eardrums too. Why are you waiting, buy it. You know you want too.
Raygun's best!.......2002-06-27
This is, without a doubt, Naked Raygun's best release. This is the first album to feature the "classic" Raygun line up of Pezzati/Haggerty/Kedzy/Spicer. From beginning to end, every song is great. The bonus tracks are "Slim", the b-side to the group's legendary "Vanilla Blue" single and tribute to actor Slim Pickens, and "Rocks Of Sweden", and song Raygun covered that was originally written by Pierre Kezdy for his old band, Trial By Fire. This is classic Chicago punk rock. If you're looking to get into Naked Raygun, start here.
How the midwest was won.......2002-06-06
In the early 80's, like many large cities, Chicago had a punk scene. bands like Big Black, Screeching Weasel, The Jesus Lizard, and of Course, Naked Raygun. Four guys from Chicago, Ill. with new dreams that they were gonna make real(pun intended). With Jeff Pezati on vox, Pierre Kezedy on bass, Eric Spicer on drums and tools, and of course John Haggerty on guitar, they crafted a sound that struck a balance between the English punk of the Buzzcocks and the industrial noise of Chicago heroes Big Black(in which lead singer Jeff Pezati played bass in; on a side note, producer Steve Albini was in that band too). This 1985 album was a strong point for the band, featuring the moving, anthemic opener "Home Of The Brave". The album then goes in the mambo meets machine rhythms of "Dog At Large" strangely, no lyrics listed in the CD booklet. The semi-folky, semi-punky love song "Knock Me Down" follows, but doesn't really connect. The album then goes in the Chicago-blues influenced rocker "Mr. Gridlock", which features some power drill sounds in the intro courtesy of drummer Eric Spicer(it was hard not to be influenced by the city's blues scene, even if you were a punk, The Jesus Lizard display this influence blatantly on their 1991 albums, Goat). "The Strip" follows after an electronic swish, a kind of hardcore punk meets bar-band song about strip clubs and male bonding. "I Remember" is a bittersweet recollection of life and it's trials, while "Those Who Move" is (I think) about the fear of change. "Backlash Jack".....well I don't know what that song's about, it kinda speaks for itself. Sample lyric: "Backlash Jack...oh waht happened to me....whoa oh." "The Envelope" comes next....it reminds me of the movie "Office Space." The CD version has a tribute to comic legend Slim Pickens, which is mildly funny, I guess. "The Peacemaker" is blatant nod to Big Black, except more machine-like and less melodramatic. "New Dreams", written by Big Black member Santiago Durango, was written for singer Jeff Pezati's old band Trial By Fire. An okay song at best, but not bad either. Overall, a great album. standouts include , "Home Of The Brave", "Dog At Large", "Mr. Gridlock", "The Strip", "The Envelope", and "Backlash Jack." If you don't have this album...bow your head in shame.

went out with a whimper.......2006-02-01
This is Naked Raygun's last studio record, and the only record they recorded without longtime guitarist John Haggerty (who went on to form the excellent Pegboy).
The loss of such a key member really shows on this record; the recording sounds flat and uninspired, and the songs aren't really memorable, ("Home" being the notable exception.)
I'm not writing a review to simply slag this record, I'm trying to warn potential new fans, that this is the one bad record to avoid. Lots of great bands put out a stinker, and this happens to be Naked Raygun's.
Pick up any of their 4 previous records: Throb Throb, All Rise, Jettison, and Understand. All of those records get 5 out of 5 stars in my book.
Still good Raygun...Its punk rock man........2004-08-14
I think this is a bad ass Raygun cd no matter what. Its not as fast as any of the others obviously but its still definitley them with a more solid rock sound. The sax isnt that bad either its fits the sound of the music. Best tracks are "Prepare To Die, "The Grind" "Home" and "Holding You". This album is true punk rock and all thier albums are good especially "All Rise" and "Jettison". If you own older Raygun albums but dont have this one, get it. Its awesome.....and on one more note, The album cover is their best one...take this cd shaken, not stirred.
Great but only a fading glory.......2004-02-06
This is the last NR Lp I ever bought. This one was a great listen when it came out, but it lacks something. The previous releases had an energy, a spark that made every listen worth while. This Lp still has many memories for me. The only time I ever saw them live they played in Austin, Tx with Jawbox in 1991. They were great live and to this day that remains one of the best live bands I ever saw. Sadly though, this release in retrospect lacks everything the others had. I pull it out from time to time to see if my opinion has changed, but sadly it has not.
still rockin.......2002-09-03
No, nothing will match the emotion of I Remember, the energy of Backlash Jack or the ferocity of anything on Throb Throb but this album still has some classics. Home and The Grind remain among my all time NR favorites. All the whoah-hey-ho-ing is still here, it's just against a new, slightly less gritty backdrop and cleaner production. Now is "cleaner" better? Not in my opinion; the old albums seemed to drip axle grease and city dirt. The big problem here is definitely the saxophone, an instrument that just wasn't ever meant to be "low-fi" and should never try to find a home in punk music. It just has that sound that makes you say "What...is this!" as soon as you put it in. One thing they do differently here is song writing. Sure, you can't argue with the sheer weirdness of Roller Queen, but songs like Strange Days, Terminal, and In My Head all have lyrics that are on a whole new level. I wouldn't go so far as calling them deep but they're a little more grownup than they used to be. Again, is this a good thing?...
Big fans don't need to read this because they already own it. If you like old Naked Raygun, buy this too. It doesn't have the immediate appeal of their older material but it it's worth the purchase. If you're still teetering, download an MP3 of "Home" and I guarantee you'll be sold.
AN UNDERRATED GEM.......2000-10-14
I'm a huge Raygun/Pegboy fan. This album is a classic. Not a bad song on it. Great lyrics, grungy guitars, throbbing bass, drums (and yes, even saxophone on one song). Sure, there's no Haggerty (that's what Pegboy is/was for), but it is still CLASSIC RAYGUN! An underrated gem. Why deprive yourself? Rock on, lads.

This is the FIRST Naked Raygun disc to buy.......2006-01-06
"I Lie", "Swingo" and "Potential Rapist" are easily three of Naked Raygun's best songs. You also get Jim Colao who was Naked Raygun's greatest drummer. All Rise and Throb Throb can wait - buy this one first.
press play, 22 minutes later press play again.......2005-05-03
One day my roomate has my do a search for naked raygun mp3s on soulseek. I don't find any but because he says they are a great punk band from the early 80's I go out and buy this album. Later that day I am told I got the "worst" one. I have since bought the later albums but still it is this one I keep coming back to. The sound is a perfect lo-fi raw experiance and the songs are fast and brutal. "I lie" is perhaps one of the best punk anthems. All these songs make you want to jump, fight and dance until the muscles on your neck split and blood is jettisoned from your mouth. Recomended for any punk fan. Also if you enjoy this album go out and find a copy of the Urinals "Negative capability". Check it out.
Zapped.......2001-02-22
Naked Raygun was the flagship band of the tiny Chicago punk scene in the 80s. This collection of songs is a lot of fun, although the shoddy sound quality of the latter half of the album might rub some people the wrong way (I like it, personally -- I love the second "Swingo" on there, which is fast and raw, as it should be).
Favorite tracks on this one are: "Bombshelter" (great to listen to with headphones), "Tojo," "Swingo," "Potential Rapist" -- the rhythm section on these is just stellar -- machine-gun drums and galloping bass (the bass reminds me a lot of Wire, incidentally). Speaking of Wire, I thought their cover of "12XU" to be sludgy -- way too slow.
I think NR's work has held up well, managing not to sound dated. It's a short album, so you can cycle through it over and over again, which is good, since you'll come to appreciate the music as you listen to it more. There's an interesting commentary on the inside jacket by Steve Albini, and some great pictures.
Don't get me wrong..........2000-09-12
...I do love Naked Raygun's later work, but I put this one in most often. It sure is primitive, and noisy, and lo-fi, and that's why I like it. To me, songs like "Bombshelter" and "Tojo" and "Tell Them" from the 1980 session embody in my mind what I think real punk rock is. Not quite as melodic as their later punk-pop (NOT pop-punk, mind you) outings, but still it isn't completely user-unfriendly.
Oh, and "Potential Rapist" (will Amazon let me say that?) is a gosh darn classic. One of the best songs ever written.
Trivia time, guitarist Santiago Durango, and singer Jeff Pezzati were both doubling in Big Black around the time this record came out, around the same time that Big Black's "Bulldozer" was released.
Interesting.......2000-02-10
For true Raygun fans only. A very raw recording including NR's first album (which had been deleted when the band was still around) and some rare outakes of a previous session. While some of the songs are good, (Liar is one of their best songs in my opinion) it is merely a novelty to hear what the band sounded like before they were great. Albini has written better and said better things as well in the liner notes. Go buy Throb Throb first.

Naked Raygun's best .......2004-12-01
This album is their best one ever. It is really good and enjoyable but compared to other releases it has a sound all its own, which is good. The time changes and melodies will make your ears take a different listen. My favorites are Jettison and their last album, Raygun...Naked Raygun. but this one is bad ass as well especially for treason, wonder beer, and Never Follow
Brings back some old memories!.......2000-01-08
Raygun always put on an amazing live show, lots of energy and spirit. Listening to the CD makes me weepy for those days again. Raygun is certainly at the head of the punk band class. Great stuff that stands the test of time. If you want music that rocks and just makes you feel good, this is the band(and one of the albums)for the job!

About 5 years ago I heard Naked Raygun. I bought 2 cds from them and let my friends listen to them. Somehow both are missing. If my friends have the guts to steal 2 of my favorite cds, they must be good. You won't find a band with more hooks, power, and influence than these guys. Enjoy.

Album Description
Possibly the greatest band to emerge from the Chicago area in the `80s, this is the band that would eventually spawn Pegboy and forever secure a place in the punk rock hall of fame. Naked Raygun redefined all the rules of punk in the `80s, being melodic when thrash was in, noisy art-damage when pop was in, and calling it quits when they were on the verge of going mainstream. But who cares? They were punk and there were no rules then. Now time warp to 1997. 2,000 screaming punk fans, two final sold-out shows and 22 songs recorded live. All the classics are here and they sound just as vital and important today. This is a great collector's CD - and for you new guys out there, this may be your only chance to check out America's premier punk band in its natural environment - live!

One of best live albums ever recorded........2005-03-15
It doesnt get any better than this folks. If you are into Naked Raygun, then you absolutley must get this album. The playing is flawless and the quality of the performance rivals their studio albums. Jeff Pezatti's vocals are so crisp and clear. The guitar is crunchy as hell too! The track selection couldnt be better, playing classics such as Treason, Rat Patrol, Coldbringer, and I Don't Know. With 22 Naked Raygun tracks to choose from, this is an excellent buy. If you havent even heard this band then I would say start with this...its a great introduction to what was once the best punk rock band in the world. Their music still holds up today and nothing else since them has been quite as genuine. One of the most energetic live albums I have heard in a loooooong time. This is a must-have!

The best and most diverse Naked Raygun album.......2005-03-30
Throb Throb is a throughly fasinating album combining punk sensibilities with post punk and noiseband sensibilities. Somehow it combines the best of both. There are two underlying themes at work on this album, war and sex (or lack thereof). It starts off innocently enough with Rat Patrol with its oi chants and punk riffs, then goes into Surf Combat where the rhythm section begins a hold on the record they rarely let go of. The guitar becomes an instrument of jagged bursts and feedback and it rocks mightily! Gear is similar, a song stating whoever has the most missles wins (tongue in cheek of course!).Metastasis is another great punk song with the guitar coming back out in front for a moment, until the fantastic Leeches. Basically a free jazz type song with a piercing guitar riff over it, stream of conscious lyrics are spewed, every once in a while the chrous of "Leeches, let 'em live" and then back to whatever pops up (is that a food order he places near the end???)until the song segues into the slower more noisey Roller Queen. The song which follows (if you can call it a song) is called On (not listed here, but I am reviewing an older copy. it may be where I Don't Know is listed twice) is basically a track run backwards from start to finish, and the bands chants of No no no no backwards become on. I won't give away what they say but I will say it isn't satanic but it is a tad nasty. The band switches gears again on I Don't Know (on the original LP it was the kick off of side two) and it just a great punk song and the riff at the end is one of John's best ever. Libido is a song similar to Leeches, with more jazzy rhythms but with a humorous slant (he just ain't into sex, but it's not his fault) and the statement at the end is hilarious!! No Sex is an abrasive punk song, followed by Only In America which sounds like it could be an Angelic Upstarts outtake with it's horns and chants. Stupid is just a brutal punk putdown song with a blistering guitar solo and is easily the most hardcore song on this album. The album closes with Managua which is a slow rock song which is probably the weakest track here, but still a strong finish for what was the most original sounding Naked Raygun album. All Rise made a shift to pop punk, and was still great, but it went downhill fast after that.

Growing up in the suburbs of Chicago I remember going to see many Naked Raygun shows at the Metro on Clark. Throb Throb was always the glue of the shows. The raw nature of Jeff's energetic style and inviting refrains brought the crowds together. It's hard for me to put into words what Naked Raygun was like live. All I can say is that it was the most fun I've had in my 34 years.
Listen to what I say..........2002-10-06
First I want to thank a high school friend, Jason, for letting me hear this on cassette while we were in independent study art class in high school. That cassette pailed in comparison to this new remastered CD, but it didn't matter because having a worn out cassette of "Throb Throb" is still better than having many crisp and clear CDs from the "punk" genre or whatever it's called now. I always thought Naked Raygun sounded unique, passionate, intelligent and well, good, which is why I probably never heard of them until 10 years after this album came out. I just got this remaster the other day. Funny story = I called to see if one of my favorite record stores had it and they had every other Raygun album but "Throb". Actually that wasn't funny, now that I think of it, but they got it for me in a couple of days! As soon as I started this album and heard the opening guitar of "Rat Patrol" - it was like "Oh yeah, I remember this". Ok, so I said that for just about every song, but it brought back memories alright? I can listen to this album from beginning to end, but I already know that "I don't know" is gonna get worn out. Without a doubt my favorite track and reason enough for me to seek out this album. The new Naked Raygun remasters have bonus tracks, photos (that cassette didn't have photos so I just learned what Raygun looked like a day ago and I first heard them about 8 years ago - far out!), and cool commentary/essays. The bonus track on "Throb Throb" is a shorter version of "Libido". This album is essential and I'm glad that a rare band like Naked Raygun are getting a remastered catalog. You should be too, this stuff isn't made every day. Someone cared enough to get this remastered, I think you should go buy it and listen to it a lot. For every Blink 182 and Linkin Park CD that is bought, an album like "Throb Throb" should be given to that customer to listen to. Maybe that's not such a good idea to get it for free, but you get my point.
It'll chew yer ear off..........2002-04-09
Expanding on the promise of "Basement Screams", "Throb Throb" is the best Naked Raygun release and probably the best album to come out of the Midwest in the eighties. Barring the release of the Breaking Circus and Angry Red Planet disks on CD, this will stand as the best and most innovative post-punk scree still available. Indebted to both Wire and the Stranglers, this release surpasses them both. Consume!

If you like punk rock, then this is the band to check out.......1999-05-16
I suppose you could say that with the punk rock bands that are out today, you would not consider Naked Raygun punk rock or anything like that. Be that as it may, Naked Raygun stand among as one as the greatest bands to ever form. Definately, if you want something new and interesting to listen to, then pick up Naked Raygun CD.
Punk Rock with large doses of originality and integrity.......1998-11-05
This piece is one of many sonic documentations of the awsome prowess of Naked Raygun. If you're into new school formula punk, you'll hate this. Naked Raygun don't play by the rules. They simply marched to their own drummer (literally). The 80's were a great period for punk. There were no rules. And NR prove this by inventing their own brand of sonic-fury. Always on the cutting edge, taking chances both musically and lyrically and often poking fun at their own genre (in a good way) and society as a whole. Politically correct? Not by todays standard, but they were sure politically (and apolitically) conciense. A musical feast for those who are sick and tired of the greendays, guttermouths, offspring and all that pop-punk being forced fed our unsuspecting p-rock youths. I am a fan, and I cite them as a major influence for my band "riotgun." Take a chance and take a listen...
Great album!.......1998-09-25
Simply breathtaking. Fast, exciting and ambitious.
Some of the better early Naked Raygun........1998-09-10
All Rise is from Naked Raygun's early period, which many Chicago hardcore aficionados consider to have produced their better work. It's an all-around strong production with several superior pieces to be found.
