Though The Verve has finally taken its rightful place in the Brit Rock cannon, it languished for years behind such English luminaries as Oasis and Radiohead. During that time, The Verve release several albums that got less attention than they deserved. Mark A Northern Soul as one of them. The 1995 release was perhaps the first album on which the band reeled in its trademark guitar epics and fashioned bona fide pop songs. "On Your Own" is one of the lushest and loveliest tracks never to find a minute of commercial airplay in the U.S. or abroad. If you know of the Verve as the "Bittersweet Symphony" song and the Urban Hymns album, then you're definitely missing out on what the Verve is all about. A Northern Soul is in many ways, even better than Urban Hymns. Soul hads a slightly harder sound, with songs like "A New Decade","This is Music", the title track "A Northern Soul", and "No Knock on My Door". But the album also contains ballads like the excellent "On Your Own" and "So It Goes". It also contains a song that sounds a lot a track from Urban Hymns, which is "History". It also contains a few songs that sound a lot like A Storm in Heaven, their debut album, these being "Stormy Clouds", "Life's An Ocean", and "Drive You Home" All in all, the album has the right balance of sound, and at times, it's simply amazing. The album does have a weak song or two, one of which is "Drive You Home" But one of the best things I like about this album is being able to understand most of the lyrics. In their previous albums, the lyrics are echoed out and tough to hear, but A Northern Soul is much better, with Richard Ashcroft's lyrics coming to the front of the music.

Rumored to have been written, recorded, and produced under the influence of ecstacy, this album is by far one of the most haunting listens of the mid-90s, and one of the best. Richard Ashcroft and his cronies with this album crafted a challenging and incredibly rewarding listen, that will have you coming back to it again and again. As with any band that chooses to craft music characterized as subtle, as opposed to those that lay it all out there, this album demands repeated listens before you can see it for what it really is.

Perhaps one of the darkest albums of the mid-90s in texture and content, this album sends you into the middle of a psychedelic freak-out storm at sea and doesn't let up until it's over. On first listen, any expectations of The Verve you might have formed after hearing "Birttersweet Symphony", will be blown away, and you'll be left wondering if A Northern Soul is the worst album you've ever heard, or the best, or maybe somewhere inbetween. You could imagine that this is a tough album to pin down and examine, since so much of it flies overhead in the first few listens. One day though, something clicks, and then it all makes sense.

"New Decade" and "This Is Music" kick things off into high gear, signalling what's to come. Loud yet soft guitars, hypnotic grooves and rhythms, uncharted and unchartable song structures, and Richard Ashcroft's abyss of angst-ridden lyrics, with sneering delivery. What follows jumps between the two extremes of hypnotic bass driven bluesy numbers "Life's An Ocean" and "Take You Home", to the other extreme of total psychedelic storms "Brainstorm Interlude" "A Northern Soul".

This album is a voyage into an endless well of angst brought on by loneliness and drugs, and that angst is displayed in an epic scope that easilly rivals that of Layne Staley and his own drug-fueled demons on the album "Dirt". Thankfully there is some kind of resolution to it however, encapsulated in the song "Sotrm Clouds", where Ashcroft tells us his story of "how his life seemed to change in a matter of days" asking "Why does change always seem to bring the rain?". If weren't for the resolution on this disc, it would be the next In Utero, perhaps the most alienating experience in music as we know it. A Northern Soul is a well-rounded, epic listen, one that anyone who has ever been plagued by angst can relate to, and even learn from. It's an enlightening listen.

If you are looking for a challenging and rewarding listen, as well as brutally honest emotional rock music, as opposed to radio-ready mainstream music of the present, I can only ask you why you don't have this cd already?

this album just has everthing. massive guitar riffs, incredible rhythm section, richard's vocals at his very best and layered to the max in the right places. songs about living and dying on your own and being a miserable selfish human. but actually there are moments of great beauty and honesty. it makes you feel happy or sad depending on your mood. this album was pretty much overlooked by the mainstream at the time and yet it wipes the floor with ubran hymns. shows what the media and the general public really know doesn't it?

What can be said for the verves best lp,..I was watching a bad movie on cable one night, and i heard a song in this movie, at some LA party type setting, it was "Slide away". Probable the most known song from their first LP. That song cought my attention, looked in the credits got the name and sought them out. Bought "A storm in heaven". Liked the cd alot, loved slide away, but I was unsure of there longevity. Kinda forgot about them untell I found out there where coming to town to play. Bought a ticket (even if your not a big fan of a group from over seas, never know if you will ever get another chance to see them live again) It was the "Norther soul" tour. I had bought a norther soul cd already and loved it! One raido staion was playing "History" off this album. It was a sami big hit for the band. The album instantly became one of my faviorte cd's (out of 300). Finally a band that will withstand the test of time! So i thought....every song on the album has a feel all its own. History- synphony background loop with great lyics very smooth.
Drive you home- folk rock but very powerfull sounding.
So it goes- a blue eyed soul song.
Brimstom Interlude- psychedelic rock.
A new decade- rock.
A northern soul- psychedelic rock hypnotic gitar.
This is only 6 songs that are just awsome. Not a stinker in the bunch on this cd IMHO. If u listin to this album twice you will be hooked...Only if u like good music.
Sadly to say the band is broken up and Richard Ashcroft is doing his solo thing. From what I heard is that the synphony loop they used in the back ground of "Bitter sweet synphony" was a track off a stones album. It ended with the stones winning a copyright infringement lawsuit and the rights for the song....
I was fortunet enough to see this timeless band twice! I have 4 verve cd's and 2 Ashcroft cd's. Just to let u know im a fan of this band. (could ya tell?)

It's just incredible to me that Verve (or "The Verve," if you prefer) released only three albums. Their second album, "Northern Soul," perfectly bridges the lush swirling guitar sounds of "A Storm In Heaven," and the more mainstream, heavily orchestrated "Urban Hymns." While guitarist Nick McCabe clearly dominated "Storm," on "Northern Soul" (and continuing with "Urban Hymns") their is no doubt that vocalist, Richard Ashcroft, became the leader and chief visionary of the band. As compared to the prior album, Ashcroft sings with much more emotional depth and confidence. His lyrics are almost achingly personal and painful. It's notable how he uses repetition of certain phrases to imply deeper meaning in a number of songs, much the same way that the brilliant Thom Yorke of Radiohead does this.

While "Northern Soul" is a fine and consistent album (I like several of the tracks alot, namely "A New Decade," "This is Music," "On Your Own," "So It Goes," "History," "No Knock On My Door"), I don't think it reaches the level of the best portions of "Storm" or "Hymns," wich is why I gave it "only" four stars. Additionally some of the songs run on a verse or two too long. Nevertheless, "Northern Soul," holds its own as part of the extraordinary Verve trilogy of albums. Why did they break up?

I'll be honest and admit that I have no idea what these songs are about. The lyrics seem philosophical, conceptual and/or impressionistic; the music, though complex, is more directly tethered to known territory. Vocalist Stuart Livingston has a pleasingly melodic, almost sing-song delivery, which floats above the heavy-yet-ethereal instrumentals. This is an album full of contrast, from the dynamic range of the dense shoe-gazery rock, to the muscular rhythms that are both lightened and intensified by violin and cello. This time out the bands cut their songs down to under six minutes, but they're still long enough to develop crescendos that provide slowly-evolving, song-length contrast. It's a testament to the quality of the melodies, arrangements and performaing that this album can be enjoyed without being able to interpret the lyrics. [©2007 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

When A Northern Chorus announced what their 4th album, 'The Millions Too Many', would sound like before being released, it was both an exciting and nervous experience. They mentioned that all 9 songs were to be less than 6 minutes in length, but not to worry- Some of their most complex musical arrangements were sure to be appreciated. And, I must say- These songs get right down to business! After the :45 mark on the opening track, "Carpenter", the band lets loose with an incredible amount of bliss and energy, you'll wonder why these tempos weren't incorporated into songs more often. A pleasant return of Erin Aurich's violin (who appeared on the band's debut album, 'Before We All Go To Pieces'), complements the intense sound perfectly. Not to mention- New drummer, Craig Halliday, who takes the driver's seat as the rest try to keep up. And... They do. Other band members (Stuart, Pete, Owen and Alex) from 'Bitter Hands Resign' return here as well, all of whom are great company for the success of this Canadian band.

Although 'Spirit Flags' and 'Bitter Hands Resign' are well-crafted albums, 'The Millions Too Many' is its own real treat, and shows no dependency on these two previous accomplishments. The song structure can be reminiscent, of course, to earlier works (whether it be signature changes from quiet to loud, or the thoughtfulness of their lyrics), it still stands on its own. What's amazing is how A Northern Chorus has created an album whose songs are now abbreviated (or radio-friendly, if I might say), but can be appreciated just the same as their other masterpieces. The closing track, "Winterize", from 'Bitter Hands Resign' often comes to mind as if it were hinting to the future direction of songs to follow. With all that said, however, it is tempting to comment how 'The Millions Too Many' runs out of steam after the first 5 songs, but that may be because those are tracks that are personal favorites. It truly is an exciting first half, and the second half merely relaxes up a bit, that's all. In a nutshell, for this band to hold onto their roots (without the listener always realizing it) and also try a different approach to album making, they get a firm pat on the back for 'The Millions Too Many'. Nice one, guys!

Maybe you've heard of A Northern Chorus. Maybe you haven't. If you have, maybe you know how all of their songs have a tremendous, wafting build-up until it's all finally unleashed in a sonic wave of bliss. Maybe you loved Spirit Flags with all of your heart, and can't imagine any sort of improvement from this, A Northern Chorus' third album. Maybe you're tired of post-rock imitations and tired re-hashes of Mogwai and Explosions In The Sky, and can't see why you should waste your time with another "imitator".

Maybe you should pick up Bitter Hands Resign. While only fifty minutes and eight songs long, Bitter Hands Resign is A Northern Chorus' most complete album to date. Every song is blindingly brilliant, every song is new and bold. Most importantly, A Northern Chorus has a majestic, ascending style that is all their own - you will not find yourself aching to switch over to "Young Team", nor will you feel like you're listening to some spin-off of it.

Bitter Hands Resign is a gold standard album.

I don't know about you, but I'm usually a little scared when an artist comes out with a truly great album, of whether the next one will measure up to the grandeur of it's predecessor. I'll admit I was a little scared for "Bitter Hand Resign," but now my fears have been calmed.

This album follows the norm for post-rock almbums, but they sure do it well; and very uniquely I might add. They are more vocal than other Post-rock groups. This includes barely audible words to beautiful, epic harmonies. While some slowly build into a sweeping wind of music, and others are more "rocked-out," the tracks all have their own greatness.

If you are a fan of Mogwai or even The Six Parts Seven, you will enjoy this album.

Easily 5 stars.

The first time I ever heard of Phaser was a year or so ago when "Life and Illusion" was played on a radio music channel on my satellite at home. The song sounded very much like The Verve, and since I'm a big Verve fan, I really enjoyed it. It wasn't until a few months ago I decided to get the CD, and though I did think that the album wasn't as good as I expected it to be, this album is still quite strong. The standout tracks on here are "Life and Illusion", "Sway", and "Sweet Marie". The later two being sweetly crafted lubbaly epics that swirl around you. This band definitely has an atomspheric sound to them, with echoed guitars and vocals that seem to get lost in the music. I would definitely compare them to the more earlier work of The Verve.

I haven't bought the CD (yet). I just listened to one of the songs in digital cable (maybe the song was Are you there???) and i was really blown away, just as when I first listened to "Slide away" by The verve( a long time ago). In fact, it seems Phaser had a "A storm in heaven"-ish sound, which is cool. I hope I can see them live in LA soon.

I was invited by a friend to The Earl in Atlanta to see his friend's band from DC.While he referenced some groups to describe the band's sound, I really did not know what to expect. My expectations were fully satisfied. Within minutes of their launch into the second song - I was truely intrigued and found myself listening to every note, stroke and verse with intensity.

This band has intensity but adorns it with a soulful sensitivity that gets under your skin. I listened to The Verve the day after and mid-way through Catching The Butterfly I thought of Life & Illusion. These guys have a deliciuosly, beautiful approach but they are not soft. When they throw down - They throw down.

I am so pleasantly suprised by this new find and can't wait to hear more........

"Sway" may be 10 years too late or distanced far enough from the shoegazer scene to distinguish itself. The composition of each song is excellent, a definite breath of fresh air compared to the "neo-grunge" and "diet punk" that presently dominates the American music scene. The obvious cross-references are Slowdive, Cousteau and softer songs by Oasis, however, most songs have a much more sophisticated structure than most showgazer era efforts. Highly recommended for early 1990s Brit Pop fans.

i bought this album on a whim while i was drunk one night and at first it sounded great (at the music store while i was drunk). the next morning though, the album left me a little....dissapointed. other reviewers had compared them to oasis, radiohead, and sigur ros (huh!!!!). i could see a bit of an oasis influence though, whether that is bad or good you can decide. the tracks i did enjoy (mildly) were ARE YOU THERE? and CAN'T GET YOU OUT OF MY MIND. i'll also comment on NORTHERN LIGHTS which was a peaceful song with kind of a minimalist attitude. overall it wasn't horrible but my money would've been better spent elsewhere or at the very least another round for me and my friends.

I ordered this cd as inspiration for my African Grey parrot. (no kidding) I adopted him a couple of months ago and his first family taught him some basic tunes. I ask you, how many times do I have to hear the 'wolf whistle'? While he's hopefully absorbing some new, more challenging tunes, I'm enjoying listening to familiar scores whistled, accompanied by a piano.

Album Description

LTM are proud to announce the release of a CD of singles and rarities by Northern Picture Library, the cult London band featuring three former members of The Field Mice. Northern Picture Library were formed by Bobby Wratten, Annemari Davies and Mark Dobson after The Field Mice split in 1991. NPL was a much less highly-strung project, less song-based and more dark and ambient than before, drawing influence from Talk Talk, Brian Eno and ambient/dance crossover. Melody maker described their album Alaska (already released on CD by LTM) as "one of the debut albums of 1993" and the band as "state of the art, post-ambient electropoppers who write some of the most beautiful songs in existence." Postscript gathers together the eight tracks from the 1994 eps Blue Dissolve and Paris, together with the rare compilation track Something Good (from a Sound of music tribute, no less!), and three previously unreleased tracks. These include Alaska outtake Snowscene, Ammonia Train (a Stars of Heaven cover) and an extraordinary remix of Welcome to California, originally recorded by Katmandu. Postscript boasts all new artwork. The 12 remastered tracks give a total running time of 66 minutes. Career Precis: formed in suburban Mitcham in 1987, The Field Mice released seven singles and three albums on Sarah Records. The group split at the end of 1991 but are now recognised as genre-leaders. Chief songwriter Bobby then formed Northern Picture Library, who released an album and three singles between 1993 and 1994. Bobby currently fronts Trembling Blue Stars. Their 5th album The Seven Autumn Flowers was released in 2004 on Elefant.

If you're a fan of this band or any of the related bands (Field Mice, Trembling Blue Stars, any Sarah records band) this is definatly a release for you. Most of these b-sides and comp tracks are very rare at this point and tough to track down. The songs that didn't appear on the albums were just as good as the ones that did. Twee as f**k!!!

      I have been trying for quite a while to buy a copy of this album. It is the first album by the prolific artist Bill Nelson, who is still generating a considerable amount of new material through his many permutations.

      The history of this album is that it was recorded on a shoestring with the help of friends, and received positive review through airings by John Peel on the BBC. It ultimately lead to his first big break with the original incarnation of Be Bop Deluxe, a great glam/progressive rock band.

      The irony is that this album has been tied up in litigation, where ownership of the album was in question. It has gone through several reprints, and whether what you have is an legitimate original or something else is not worth worrying about, since it is my understanding that Bill Nelson doesn't get a dime from it. Thus the fact that it is not in print now, and likely never will be again. If you are lucky, and persistent, you will find a copy for less than the ridiculous $75.00 I have seen.

      The music? It is a really polished fusion of folk/electric music. FANTASTIC guitar work -- his trademark. A fair number of the songs remind me of things he will later write for Be Bop Deluxe. Some of the music has a spiritual tinge -- a recurring theme that continues to show up in his work (think U2 and not bad christian rock for a parallel).

      If you are already a fan, I think this is a must have. For anyone else that is curious, pick up Bebop Deluxe's Sunburst Finish or Modern Music, or for that matter, his later solo work -- Chimera, Love that Whirls, Getting the Holy Ghost Across or newer stuff like Atom Shop (and don't ignore his instrumental stuff as well). He is one of my very favorite musicians because he is always reinventing himself, and he is willing to take us along on his latest adventure, and it is more often than not worthwhile and memorable.

      Avoid. I love Bill Nelson. I mean I really love him. But this is really old stuff from his pre-Be Bop Deluxe days and it has aged incredibly. This is due to the time it was produdced. The man has gone on to produce some fantastic stuff that should be investigated instead.

      As legend would have it, this was the album that Bill recorded in fellow band member Richard Brown's bedroom. Dang, you can even hear a toilet flushing in the background.

      While the album is ten thousand light years from the techno wizardry of Roy Thomas Baker, who produced Futurama, it remains a true classic for any serious fan of the Man. The songs are indeed more inclined towards folk, but you can certainly hear Bill's guitar style developing, and his soloing is most impressive.

      I still have the vinyl and the Teenage Archangel/Jets At Dawn single that came along later, also on Smile, but the CD is infinitely more convenient, and highly recommended. Go for it.

      This album was, I believe, released solely through a small record store in Wakefield I used to frequent in my youth. An album photo was taken in a park near where I lived. One of the real powers for me of Bill Neslon's music is the way he takes the sights and sounds of his (and my) native Wakefield and transfigures them, weaving images with wonderful, hanting sounds. Although not featured on this album my favourite, Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape is an audio landscape painting of my native county that is so evocative it always -- ALWAYS -- makes my spine tingle.

      Bill Nelson's career has gone so many fascinating places. He's worn the mask of guitar hero, ambient wizard and outre film and play score generator. Prior to his time of multi-volume electronic CDs, ringing guitar and .com commercial soundtracks, there was Northern Dream.

      A folky current ran through the first Be Bop Deluxe album, notwithstanding its rock and glam influences. Northern Dream, though, is an earlier, independent label work which is unalloyed folk-rock, emphasis on folk. This is a medium which works very well for Nelson. One wishes that his evolution had included a few more species of this sound.

      For me, the highlight of the work is "Rejoice", a quirky bit of acoustic syncopation. The whole thing, though, is worth a listen to hear Bill Nelson prior to the time that either the daemons of commerce or the goddesses of experimentation took Mr. Nelson and whatever argonauts were at hand to places very different from this simple, folk-rock sound. Northern Dream is not a production masterpiece (in fact, it's got a sort of Dreamboat Annie charm, in that its production values are simple but add to rather than subtract from the charm). But it's sincere music, and sincerity, at this distant remove, has its own virtues....

      Another band led by Robert Wratten of the late and barely known Field Mice and the somewhat known and current Trembling Blue Stars. I find this album preferable to Wratten's later work with TBS. This is a really quiet record, soft vocals with subdued sounds. You definitely have to be in the mood for this, and I wouldn't recommend it for anybody with romantic problems, Mr. Wratten's lovelife does not sound promising. But it is a nice, quiet record (especially for Autumn or Winter) to sit around and look out the windows to.
