A delightfully buoyant, mock-creepy collection of film scores from Hollywood's first and best call for quirk, strangeness, and charm. Focusing on Elfman's post-1992 work (much of it for director Tim Burton), this 2 CD set features excerpts from Edward Scissorhands, To Die For, and Batman Returns, among other lesser items. -- Jeff Bateman

Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06
Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D
Good overview.......2007-04-18
Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.
Great Music!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-08
I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!
Very nice for a Danny Elfman collection.......2005-08-02
Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this, then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.
Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04
The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.
Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.
Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.
This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.
If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

Two old albums of some of the best early Newgrass!.......2003-01-24
Hippie-era newgrass doesn't get more genial or good-natured than this lively outfit, which featured banjo whiz Alan Munde, fiddler Byron Berline, bassist Rober Bush and singer Kenny Wertz, along with an amorphous cast of high-powered pals such as Clarence White, Herb Pedersen and Al Perkins. The band was an on-again, off-again project that got squeezed in between the demands that various bands such as the Dillards, Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers placed on the Gazette members... Although lumped in with the whole early-'70s country-rock scene, Country Gazette were clearly more traditionally and bluegrass oriented in musical terms, even if their song selection ranged from the Louvin Brothers and Flatt & Scruggs to Steven Stills and Elton John. Fortunately for us, they managed to eke out these two fine major-label albums, which radiate a keen sense of humor, a flair for showmanship and a profound understanding of musical history which keeps these recordings sounding fresh as can be, decades down the line. A nice prelude to their later indie-label works... highly recommended!
Good blugrass always holds up........2002-11-08
When I was a high school kid in the mid-70s I hung out at this little acoustic instrument shop in Phoenix called "Mike's Music." Mike was a bluegrass-addicted picker with dreams of owning a music store. As store managers went, Mike was a great musician. The store didn't last long but while it did, I knew I could drive over there, play the Martins on the wall and listen to some great bluegrass music emanating from the stereo.
Mike had a real attraction to these two albums by Country Gazette. They were where I first became aware of that amazing fiddler Byron Berline, and although nearly 25 years went by between hearing these albums in Mike's music store and getting them on CD, I found that they'd lost none of their punch.
"Traitor" is my favorite of the two LPs here. The songs just seem to have a better flow with each other, but the playing on both albums is stellar.
Favorites include "Lost Indian," "I Wish You Knew," "Sound of Goodbye," and their interesting take on Elton John's "Honky Cat."
But it's all good. I've lost track of Mike, but a lot of the music he shared with me is on this CD. If you're the kind who likes to sit around pickin' on a Saturday afternoon, this is definitely a CD you should check out.
Byron and Alan -- absolute monsters!.......1999-09-01
Sure, the two albums are a little too California for the majority of most east coast bluegrassers, but if you grew up listening to the (original) Dillards, Kentucky Colonels, and Vern & Ray, then you'll understand what drives this band. Alan Munde is just a monster -- absolutely rock solid, with licks that banjoists then, and banjoists now, can only dream of nailing. And playing off him is Byron's fiddling (with hands like hams, how the heck can he play such intricate double and triple stops?). Two of the best 70's bluegrass albums on the same CD. How CAN you lose??

Given the two belated live-action sequels and numerous other TV and video spinoffs spawned by Disney's charming 1961 animated original, the Dalmatian count is more like 1,001 by now. This reissued soundtrack (admirably restored in the late '90s by producer Randy Thornton) showcases the original orchestral film cues of George Bruns to good effect. While the composer's bright, lively work was largely fragmentary (originally written as punctuation for the film's turns of action and comedy), its components have been skillfully sequenced and gently edited here for a more cohesive listening experience. The film's most memorable musical moments remain Mel Levin's delightful trio of songs, "Kanine Krunchies," "Dalmatian Plantation," and, of course, the classic villainess romp "Cruella DeVil." Bonus cuts include both a bluesy piano rendition and Levin's decidedly goofy piano/vocal demo of the latter tune. A great primer to Disney's animation underscore philosophy, seasoned with one of the studio's most memorable songs. --Jerry McCulley

RESTORES ONE'S FAITH IN HONEST MUSIC MAKING.......2007-03-29
Thank God for Tod Handley. I vividly recall a year or two back, feeling particularly jaundiced after a succession of glitzy, superficial concerts by conductors far starrier and younger, having my faith in real music making restored by a Handley concert which included a scintillating Schubert Little C Major and a profoundly moving VW Sea Symphony.
That work, of course, is the springboard for this cycle of complete VW symphonies. And a very satisfying journey through this inspiring canon of nine it is, too. Handley's affinity with English music needs no reiterating, but his relationship with Vaughan Williams in particular is a special one. More than most, he is alive to the changing and developing nature of the different symphonies through Vaughan Williams life - from the rich Romantic panoply of the 1st, taking in the influence of study with Ravel in the 3rd, the violence of Nos.4 & 6 and the idealisation of his Pilgrim music as well as that of his beloved Tudor composers in the Fifth, right through to the exploration of new sonorities and form in 7, 8 and 9. Throughout the cycle, this is music making that is honest, perceptive, communicative and frequently illuminating and inspiring.
Handley's Sea Symphony has terrific sweep in the opening movement, ideal rhythmic crispness in the scherzo and real depth in the long, questing Finale. Its one drawback is perhaps the somewhat cramped acoustics of Liverpool's Philharmonic Hall compared to, say, the fuller sound of the Kingsway Hall in Boult's second recording. His London Symphony is as fine as any, though I do now miss the passages opened out in Hickox's recording of the Original Version.
I'm inclined to think this the best Pastoral of any on disc: it finds Handley very sensitive to all the overtones of VW's experiences of the Great War that lie behind its overt pastoralism - Flanders Fields as much as English ones. This is followed by a stunning Fourth, matched only by the composer's own performance. The grinding dissonances of its motto motif, the bounce of the jazzier rhythms, the dark Beethovenian transition to the Finale are all perfectly realised: "I don't know if I like it, but it's what I meant" in VW's famous phrase and I feel sure Handley's performance is just what he meant.
The Fifth finds fierce competition from Boult (twice), Barbirolli (twice) and Haitink (most purely symphonic of all). But Handley strikes a fine balance between the Pilgrim's Progress antecedents of much of the material and the `absolute music' arguments to which it is subjected. This disc is almost worth it for the glorious horn counterpoint at the climax of the first movement alone, picked out by Handley as by no other conductor in my experience. His Sixth is another blistering reading to set beside that of his mentor, Boult, in mono for Decca. Handley's pp final movement here is too mystical to be mistaken for the post-nuclear landscape it's often compared to - it seems closer to VW's great friend, Holst's, Neptune. Pacing and colour are the strengths of this Antarctica, but only Haitink really succeeds in making it sound truly symphonic. And No.8 was always the domain of its dedicatee, `Glorious John' Barbirolli, who seemed to have the secret of its somewhat obtuse Variations without a Theme opening movement, its Bartokian Strings only and Wind only inner movements and the clangour of its Finale with `all the phones and spiels know to the composer'. However the elusive 9th is one of the best of Handley's set. He really seems to understand its deep, dark, Hardyesque mysteries, grounded as those novels seem to be in the very earth and land of England, as well as its further explorations of intriguing sonorities with the use of flugelhorn and saxophones.
The fill-ups from the original discs are here as well, including a fine Job and a superb Flos campi, another elusive work that seems to speak of secrets that are not to be found in the VW biographies. These are all considerable performances that reflect Handley's long-standing empathy with and authority in this music. And all at a bargain price.
Excellence throughout.......2004-10-16
On balance, this is probably the best set of Vaughan Williams symphonies out there today. Vernon Handley was a protege of Adrian Boult and you can hear a likeness in the way the two approach the music of their countryman. Boult may have had an advantage, being alive at a time Vaughan Williams was composing and premiering a number of the symphonies after they were composed.
The passage of time has left us two outstanding sets of Vaughan Williams symphonies by Boult, including a latter stereo version. I have heard both sets and they are wonderful. I prefer this one, however. Handley does things with some of the lesser played Vaughan Williams scores that, I believe, gives him an edge as the best of today's interpreters.
His version of the "Sea" Symphony No. 1 -- which is not a favorite of mine -- stacks up with anything out there. It avoids the bombastic approach taken by some conductors that do not completely understand the music or Vaughan Williams style. Even the new Atlanta Symphony version of the "Sea" Symphony does not exceed the vigor, loveliness and fine singing on parade under Handley's baton.
Handley also does wonderful things with the lesser known Symphonies 8 and 9, which some critics went wow over when Bernard Haitink recorded them together on one CD a few years back. Personally, I never heard the message of the dramatic 8th Symphony until I listened to this set.
Handley is hardly at a loss in the more well-known symphonies, either. His renditions of the "London" Symphony 2, "Pastoral" Sympony 3, Symphony 4 and "Antarctica" Symphony 7 are up with the best versions ever recorded. Handley's version is the first time I ever heard the chimes of Big Ben in the "London" symphony. His trip to Antarctica in Symphony 7 is probably the best one out there today and rivals the famous mono version Boult did 50 years ago, less the spoken tracts at the beginning and between sections.
Handley is equally fine in Vaughan Williams two violent symphonies, Nos. 4 and 6. In Symphony 4, he is especially visionary, understanding that the composer was not really writing about the impending world war when he penned the symphony in the late 1930s. Vaughan Williams said it was more about human interaction and communication and you hear this from Handley, who eschews much of the needless violence other conductors put into the score.
It is only the Symphony No. 5 where I find a clear preference to versions by Andre Previn in either of his stereo versions. Previn's 1988 Telarc recording also includes "Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis", perhaps Vaughan Williams' best-known melody. This is preferable to Handley's Symphony 5 diskmate, the "Flos Campi" Suite, which provides another moment for the Liverpool Philharmonic Choir to shine. Previn endows the wonderful symphony with more romance and emotion than Handley.
That's not to say Handley's recording is a dog. Hardly! His is an exquisite recording of some of the world's most beautiful music. It lacks little and competes with the best out there. All told, this is a five star set with beautiful and, when appropriate, powerful and visceral playing from the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.
There are other fine Vaughan Williams set extant -- both Boult sets, the exceptionally well-recorded Thomson on Chandos, various recordings by Previn & Hickox and those by Bakels on Naxos -- but no complete set quite captures Ralph Vaughan Williams as three dimensionally as this one. My only complaint is Classics for Pleasure could have mated Handley's equally brilliant version of "Job: A Masque for Dancing" with one of the shorter symphonies and did not.

great, great!!!.......2006-12-05
This is the way ,I think, Purcell should sound. No pomp and surcomstance but only great music.
ALL THE MUSIC YOU EVER NEED!!.......2003-05-23
This boxed set is by far one of the best purchases I have ever made. As a Purcell freak, this hits every button I have. The cast of characters include the inequitable Robert King, New College Choir, Bowman, and a host of other venerable persons. Likewise the attention to period performance of these works makes it an essential addition to the library of any serious anglophile/Musicologist etc. Now if only the Britten Realizations of all Purcell's songs could be recorded alongside the originals! You will Love this set!

Album Description
More cutting-edge worshipful fun like Worship Rock 1, but geared for 2-10 year olds.
Irresistable songs in a variety of fun rock styles for all ages, played with passion by real, world-famous live band members from D.C. Talk, Stephen Curtis Chapman, & Michael W. Smith. Disc 1 has more sophisticated songs which appeal to all ages, including kids and teens. Vol.2 is for pre-teens.
Customer Reviews:
Better for small kids.......2006-08-06
I ordered this CD and also Worchip Jamz 2 for my kids, but this CD would be much more appropriate for preschool age kids than older (my youngest is 11.)
It's wonderful music for the younger set! Very inspired.
CD won't play in player (CD-R?).......2004-04-07
This CD and another by the same artist will not play in my CD player which doesn't read CD-R's. When I play it in a boom box it will work. The songs just don't appeal to my children or our youth group. The song lyrics are well written but the tunes themselves are not catchy to the kids. They seem to like Colin Buchannan's Aussie Praise collection much better. Amazon doesn't sell it but cbd.com does. Great Effort though by this couple.
KING OF THE JUNGLE!! The BEST KID'S SONG EVER!.......2002-10-28
All the songs on this CD are creative and wonderful.
The BEST one is KING OF THE JUNGLE!!
It can't be beat. If you don't have it, get it.
SUPER! Kids LOVE it!.......2002-07-25
This is my favorite record for very young kids who want to bounce around innocently while singing about God. It's very colorful and creative.
Great for Worship!!.......2002-05-22
What a great album for getting in an upbeat worship frame of mind. I have used the whole Worship Rock series with the young kids and youth at my church and they love them all! I highly recomend all of the Worship Rock collection.

Since its launch in 1990, David Byrne's Luaka Bop label has quietly amassed a very impressive catalog, as this anthology clearly illustrates. While a lot of it tends toward the more cutting edge of world music (Cornershop, Tom Ze), there's still the shining purity of artists like Cesaria Evora and Susana Baca. Though Byrne himself has often looked south of the U.S. border for inspiration (his contribution here is a duet with Selena), and Luaka Bop has gained a reputation for its Latin music--its early Brazil series opened a lot of ears to the diverse musics of that country--that's far from all the label has to offer. Zap Mama have achieved remarkable popularity with a sound that has mutated into a kind of African hip-hop. So, kudos to Byrne, whose vision has made it all work (as Peter Gabriel has done at Real World). Here's a toast to another 10 years. --Chris Nickson

zero complaints.......2003-07-30
If you're ADD like me and a cd can't hold your attention, you'll love this one. Each song is very unique, but everything flows vrey nicely together. If you like world music, but don't know much about the artists, this CD will give you a little taste of everything. Guaranteed to hold your attention!
Pleasantly suprised..........2003-05-17
I am a big fan of this mix by Luaka Bop. A nice bargain cd, which allows you to sample many different groups from all over the world. The first cd is really upbeat and gets you going, while the second cd slows you down alittle and is perfect for a relaxing dinner party.
Bargain Bonus.......2002-04-03
I bought this CD because I was interested in a singer, Susana Baca. So, get this, the CD was on sale with a bargain price so I got it. What a find! I just love being surprised like this...and I'm tough!
Best deal in town!.......2002-02-20
When I saw this in the store on a listening post I decided to give it a listen. Not having heard of many of these artists I wasn't sure what to expect. Man what a surprise. This is a wonderfully diverse collection of music from many corners of the globe, with one thing in common...it all grooves like crazy! If you aren't dancing around your room when this is playing you better check your pulse. And at 12 bucks for 2 CDs! Wow! You'd be hard pressed to find 2 more entertaining CDs, and all for less than what one CD with 50% filler usually costs. Most of this isn't anywhere close to what you'd call "commercial" but for those looking for a different, more worldly groove this touches all the bases.
I guess in the end the real point of a sampler like this is to lure you in. Give the customer some bait to reel them in. It worked. I'll be looking into more of these artists in detail in the near future...so maybe my 12 dollar investment is going to end up costing me alot more in the end. Quite allright though, I've found some great music. Don't skip this if you're into groovy music from all over the world.
LOVE IT!.......2001-08-08
These two CDs are absolutely fabulous! As always, Byrne and the folks at Luaka Bob have put together yet another compilation of the best tracks off the hot albums offered by this label. The "Steamy Hits" CD is danceable and energetic, while the "Slow Jams" offers a lighter selection of still wonderful internationally flavored music. This is one of my favorite CDs right now!
