Amazon.com essential recording
After flirting with heavy guitar rock ("The Man Who Sold the World") and lighter pop ("Hunky Dory"), Bowie found middle ground on Ziggy Stardust. The creation of the Ziggy Stardust persona would live on well after Bowie shed the alien skin, marking the first rock concept album by a sexually ambiguous, artistically bent musician who confounded critics at every turn. A blend of dramatic strings, swaggering saxophones, jagged guitars, and theatrical arrangements, the album's darker rock numbers like "It Ain't Easy," "Moonage Daydream," "Ziggy Stardust," and the irresistible "Suffragette City," still serve as solid excursions into the future (then and now) of rock. The buoyant "Hang on to Yourself" and the dreamy "Star" offer hints of optimism in Ziggy's bleak world. The dramatic "Rock 'n' Roll Suicide" and the image-heavy "Star Man" ("he'd like to come and meet us but thinks he'd blow our minds!") no doubt provided plenty of stage-worthy moments when Ziggy toured in the '70s, but years later they still thrill. Bowie blew our minds! --Lorry Fleming

Wham Bam Thank You Ma'am.......2007-07-07
Now I do like this. But it is not my favorite David Bowie album. Too many so-so songs ("Star"; "Hang Onto Yourself"; "Five Years"); too much campy over-orchestration ("Rock and Roll Suicide"), one total bomb ("It Ain't Easy") - he even recycles the "Sweet Jane" riff on "Starman", which is otherwise very good. Still, it's Ziggy Stardust, man! You know? It's not like there aren't all kinds of excellent songs on this album, because there are a truckload! You know "Moonage Daydream", right? What a guitar solo! And you know "Ziggy Stardust", I assume! The lyrics! The riff! And, again, the guitar solo! "Starman" is pretty good too, though I think Bowie could've written his own riff rather than take one of Lou Reed's. Been spending too much time around Jimmy Page, have you? Continuing on, "Suffragette City" may not be terribly insightful, but it's a Stonesy rocker with a powerful horn section, so I like it. Another two songs I like that you don't often hear too much of are the cathartic "Soul Love" and the groupie-themed rocker "Lady Stardust". Oh yeah, and then there's the concept. The bisexual androgynous alien coming down from space to save everybody's life. It's a bit clunky, but like Tommy I find Ziggy Stardust is more about the music than the concept. And the music's good!
Awesome Bowie.......2007-06-28
This album is still my favorite dating back to 1972.
Bowie was the genius of the 70's.
All serious Bowie fans should add this cd to their collection, this is Bowie at his best, each song could easily be a number 1 hit even today!

Ziggy will captivate you!.......2007-06-25
I love David Bowie and could listen to "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" over-and-over. The poetics of Bowie's lyrics and the phenomenal guitar riffs hold this album together and are what makes it a classic, must have album. This is Bowie at his height of fame and truly captures Bowie's glam rock side of the late 1970s. I could not choose a favorite song from this album because, to me, each song builds off of one another like a good concept album should. From the opening of "Five Years" right to the end "The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust" shows the various levels of Bowie's artistic ability.
This is a must have for any serious collection of Bowie and for anyone interested in good, wholesome rock showcasing one of the best artists of the 1970s.
Trip down memory lane.......2007-06-10
I was in a restaurant when I heard this album being played and it really brought back memories. I used to listen to it as a teenager and I knew I'd enjoy listening to it again as an adult. It didn't disappoint! Classic Bowie!
"Wam, Bam thank you Mam!!".......2007-04-24
Wow, rock n roll can be raw, catchy, dramatic, and quite sophisticated. So what is the need for new bands? Whenever people talk about Bowie they tend to speak in terms of him paving the way for a lot of today's music. Although that is true I don't think any new rock band has come close to this album. It's too painful for some people to look at the 1970's for what it truly was: the golden age of Rock N Roll, an age that younger people like myself missed out on and only live through their C.D. collection. It is much more comforting to call the 1970's the springboard for modern rock and ignore the fact that modern rock is passionless, corporate, crap.
This album is basically the essence of rock n roll. The songs are short, catchy, and upbeat. These are all qualities that most so called "modern rock" bands avoid like the plague although it is what rock music has always truly been about. Ziggy Stardust is from an era when quality was just plain expected in an album. You couldn't release an album with 10 crapped out songs and 1 decent single like today's bands (by the way music downloading and IPODs are not helping this problem).
If you love great rock music (real rock music) please do yourself a favor and buy Ziggy Stardust and give your Track Skip button a long deserved rest.

Where's the glam? Review of the SACD remaster, not of the album.......2007-07-11
I assume you know this album, so I am reviewing the SACD remaster for you. The sound is lovely, but the mix leaves me wanting more.
The SACD has a clean fresh sound. There is nice seperation between instruments. I previously hadn't heard the viola sound rising up in "Hang on to Yourself" The Sacd highlites the acoustic guitar(s). Particularly the surround mix. It is pretty, but makes it sound like a Bowie album, not a Spider's album. I was hoping for some raw Mick Ronson electric beauty, but he seems so tame in the SACD. The theatric strings on pieces like "Starman" too seem so minimal. They don't pick you up and carry you away as they were intended.
The glam is just not present. It sounds more like the "wandering poet with a guitar approach" The stereo layer is better, but the SACD just doesn't capture the creativity of the album, or the dolled up excitement of the scene.
If you like the early acoustic Bowie, you will love this. If you like those naughty Spiders, forget it.
Quick shipping.......2007-06-14
A great album on a great cd, shipped to me so fast I didn't know what it could be when I opened it...surely not the CD I just ordered!?!?
Hang On To Yourself!.......2007-05-25
From the slow, steady beat of "Five Years" to the lavish, lamentable closing, "Rock & Roll Suicide"; "Ziggy Stardust" has held its own in Rock history. Add the element of SACD (surround sound) and the album takes on a new life. From the acoustical clapping of "Soul Love" to the hard driving guitars of "Suffragette City", this new mix finally and clearly separates all the instruments without isolating them. It is a full band experience as if you were in the studio. The acoustic guitars sound so crisp and clean and Mick Ronson's guitar work sounds like new. Although the album has always suggested "To Be Played At Maximum Volume", the bass and drums are not as highly mixed as the rest. That's a shame, as the beat here is legendary. But, I still can't over-emphasize how great this version sounds, especially after marveling over "Dark Side Of The Moon" and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road". Hang on to yourself!
great cd highly recommended........2007-02-13
one of the best rock 'n' roll cd of the history.
i think that the few more dollars are worth the hybrid sacd and when you find a compact disc that can play it it's very pleasing.
A Timeless Classic.......2007-01-24
This well produced, quality CD will not disappoint you or tarnish your memories of this timeless classic. Each song deftly draws you in, better than when you first heard it (and probably had no idea of just how really good it all was). This CD brings it all back and more - if there is but one ember of your youth left inside - you know you have to have this CD.

Bowie in full flight........2006-03-09
"Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars: The Motion Picture Soundtrack" is a recording of the final live performance by David Bowie's 'Ziggy Stardust' era band. Bowie had fully embraced the glam sound and his live performances carried an unnervingly high level of energy, and with a group more than capable of matching his intensity featuring guitarist Mick Ronson, this performance captured is enormously powerful.
Before I note anything else, it's important to mention that the sonic improvement of this reissue over all the other ones is staggering-- this has always been a great show that was not great to listen to, but through some arcane wizardry, it's been restored to really pristine sound-- it could have been recorded last month instead of over 30 years ago.
The music itself is about intensity and energy-- from the opening strains of a fierce and explosive "Watch that Man" to the closing "Rock n Roll Suicide". Along the way, Bowie manages distorted hard rock energy ("Ziggy Stardust", taken up in volume from the studio recording), sensitive and moody ("My Death"), and excitable ("Suffragette City") and a blazing take on "The Width of a Circle" with a seemingly endless bout of pyrotechnics from Ronson. This is an artist and a band in full flight, and it is an invaluable recording.
I would highly recommend this to anyone interested in Bowie's glam era, even if you've the previous issue of this recording. The sonic improvements are worth the cost alone. Highly recommended.

The Monkees' calculated approximation of the Beatles prompted some to call them the Prefabricated Four, but it took David Bowie to create a thoroughly imaginary pop star. The androgynous Ziggy Stardust, cloaked in theatrical make- up and outrageous fashions, was the stylish trend setter of the early-'70s glitter rock movement. (The influence of Ziggy hangs over Bowie's period productions of Lou Reed and Mott the Hoople.) But Bowie's outrageous guise would have meant nothing without the sleek, hard rock of the Spiders from Mars. Mick Ronson's sustain-drenched guitar packed a wicked wallop on hard-rock gems like "Hang Onto Yourself" and "Suffragette City." Songs like "It Ain't Easy" and "Rock `n' Roll Suicide" suffered from Bowie's fey theatricality, and sound lame compared to the more musical dramatics of "Star" and "Five Years." Ziggy was just one of the many guises Bowie has worn during his career, but it is by far his most influential pose. The music of Ziggy Stardust might not be timeless although Marilyn Manson might disagree but this album nonetheless captures a singularly glittery moment in the history of rock. --John Milward
Customer Reviews:
Ziggy Rules.......2007-05-30
While some might say that this album is not a classic or timeless, I couldn't disagree more... at 52, whenever I pop this CD in, it takes me right back to my concert-going days of youth... wearing glitter and sequins and watching Bowie at his best! While my days of glitter (and sequins to some extent) are over, my enjoyment of this album NEVER ends!
I still FREAK-OUT to a Moon Age Daydream and Suffragette City still makes me yell... "Wham, Bam, Thank You M'aam!" I still consider this album Bowie's best overall from the first track to the last.
Essential.......1999-08-26
There is absolutely no excuse--NONE---why this album shouldn't be in every serious music addict's collection. In the early 70's Bowie leapt up and throttled the world's collective sensibility with this raw, crunchy, witty, and utterly weird record. There really isn't anything quite like it, and it's all of a piece: listen to it once, and you'll have to listen to THOSE songs in THAT order. You are compelled. David Bowie is a very funny writer: no one nails a pose down so bitingly, least of all his own. Ziggy really sang* Screwed-up eyes and screwed-down hairdoo*Jiving us that we were voodoo*The kids were just crass*he was the nazz*With God-given ass*He took it all too far*But boy, could he play guitar... To counteract the shallowing effect of Glam, he threw you into a separate world, the stigmata of which was the dire, humanity-on-the-edge panic of Five Years. Once he had you by the short hairs, screaming, "I Believe!", he sailed you off through tune after tune, each building on the Major Tom premise of "separateness". Maybe it was all part of the subtext of being gay, but at any rate it was brilliant. A lot of people felt that way; the kids WERE just crass. The tunes that came out of this work stand out still. Sufferagette City, Soul Love, Starman. Soul Love even has some pretty snazzy poetry: Stone Love, She kneels before the grave Her grave son Who gave his life to sing The Slogan That hovers between the headstone And her eyes... Bowie never pretended to be deep. There's no R.E.M. political posturing, just good old-fashioned rock-and-roll posing. There's a difference, he knew it, and in a way, he helped invent it. Long may he live.
ABSOLUTELY ENTHRALLING!.......1999-08-25
This was the cd that started me on the road to Bowie-obsession. With Bowie's gorgeous voice, skilled guitar playing, and amazing lyrics, I kept my CD player on repeat play for months. A must-buy for Bowie virgins and fans alike.
This is one of the greatest rock albums ever!.......1998-07-09
Ziggy Stardust is truly one of the best albums I've ever heard. I love his storytelling and the way the music feels. The first four songs are enough to rock anybody. Oh yeah, my girlfriend also digs Bowie. After listening a few times, she sings along to Starman, and she clamors to borrow the album. This is great.
The Best.......1998-07-07
A fabulously entertaining cacophany of sound and fury approximating to the greatest album ever. The album rocks from start to finish, as Bowie is at his most masterful in terms of songwriting and gloriously explosive music. In short, there's nothing I enjoy more thouroughly than putting Ziggy into the CD player, turning the volume all the way up, dressing myself in audacious, form fitting and revealing clothing, and singing along with all of the revolutionary harmonies that Bowie has concocted.

Over The Top.......2007-07-05
David and crew really were a focused band by the time Ziggy was released. Songs like Five Years and Soul Love are some of the best song in rock music. No one was producing anything close to this group during this time. Even though a lot of focus is on David Bowie, he would never have come up with the sound without Woody, Trevor and Mick. Often the sum of its parts is better than the individual parts.

Bowie's Classic.......2002-03-30
Without doubt this is Bowie's greatest and most classic album. I didn't pick it up till 1975, when Bowie was already hitting us with "Fame" and "Young Americans". But I've been hopelessly in love with it ever since. I'm the "boy in the bright blue jeans", who "jumped up on the stage". And I definitely cried when they "asked if I knew his name". I guess "Lady Stardust" is my favourite track. The sad jangling piano, and Bowie sounds almost in tears with angst as he portrays the fateful Ziggy and the Spiders causing the crowd to love and be in awe at the music of this "new" band. Bowie just manages to do that on this album; tear your heart to pieces as you feel for this man trying to vent his emotion from inside. A melody to die for, utterly singable with tears in your eyes.
"Five Years" took some getting used to, but you soon realize what a monumental crescendo of a song it is. It sets the background for the world that Ziggy is born into, something reminiscent of the world of Diamond Dogs in a way; very 1984. A world on the edge of social rebellion and chaos. And Ziggy tells us in this song, in monologue form, building and building to the terrible conclusion that we have "Five years" left to live, all awesomely backed by a frenetic string section.
"Starman" was the great hit most people know, and remains a timeless classic similar in stature to his other great "Life on Mars". These are the songs that Frank Sinatra wished Burt Bacharac had written for him, if only it would have fitted in with the rest if his act! Starman gives us some hope that may be out there there is a greater being and knowledge that might help our sorry world. Trouble is he thinks he'd blow our mind.
"It ain't easy" grew on me enormously, purely for the superbly slick guitar playout, Mick Ronson presumably, and the lovely run into that sad piano beginning of "Lady Stardust" (if you've gotthe Cd that is! Records, please turn over! And don't we all listen for the "hmmm" from Bowie at the end of the line "all the woman really wants, you can give her something too".
"Soul Love" is brilliant for the melody, the harmony and the way he sings "the priest that tastes the word, and told of love, and how my God on high is all love" with venom. Bowie just strung all these fantastic song melodies together, and made it seem effortless. The sign of true genius.
The absolute genius moment being the end of "Soul Love" and count one, two, BANG ... the intro to "Moonage Daydream", right on que, is enough to put goosepimples on goosepimples.. "I'm an alligator; I'm a Momma Poppa calling for you". True space age lyrics from the days when he used his cut up bits of paper to string lyrics together. All driven by Ronsons powerful axe guitar, Daydream is a brilliant ride into orbit to escape the devastation below. The relentless beat through to the end of the track is vey powerful, and we are treated to the monumental guitar solo at the end where Ronson makes the guitar sing and sweep through space, full of harmonics and reverb. It takes a moment to come down to Earth after "Daydream".
"Star" is a fabulous rocker, that seems to change gear three or four times, with Bowie cleverly fitting the lyrics to the changes. The brilliant backing vocals going "you know that I ..." while Bowie comes in with "I could do with the money, (you know that I) I'm so wiped out with things as they are". A true nod towards the greats of Rock `n' Roll, like Elvis himself.
"Hang on to yourself" is a good rocker as well, most loved for it's neat guitar riff, but it's just an hors d'hoerve before we get one of the greatest guitar beginnings of a song in history. That of "Ziggy Stardust" itself. It's hard to say why it's so brilliant, but the melody, and the power and the tightness of the guitar playing, right down to the tone of the guitar are superb. Bowie recounts the end of the Spiders from Mars in typical angst torn voice. I have to say that Bauhaus did a fab cover version of this in 1982 which got somewhere towards the original guitar and vocals.
"Suffragette City" I've never been as bigger fan of as most people. It is good; it's brilliant, I'm not so keen on the overly drawn out play-out. We still hold our breath for "wham bam thank you man" though.
Finally we have "Rock `n' Roll Suicide". One of my favourites. The laconic beginning, lulls you into a false sense of security. But Bowie is the master of changing up a gear, which he does with towering saxophones in the background as Bowie sings "Chev brakes are snarling, as you stumble across the road". What is it? A shameless plea to someone, amid the stupidity and mistakes of a life gone wrong, a shout to someone that "you're not alone; I've had my share, I can help you with the pain". There are few more emotional songs around.
Ziggy is one album I never grow tired of. I love it always, I grew up with it, and it's part of me. How many albums can we say that about. Not many.
Remember - play it loud!
the death of glam and the rise of a legend.......2000-03-31
this is the definitive ziggy stardust, not the re-release currently on shelves. it has 5 extra cuts, among them 'velvet goldmine', the inspiration for the movie of the same title. the extra cuts flesh out the concept of ziggy stardust. the music, the concept, the lyrics, all perfect. it's interesting that someone came out with a concept as fully realized as ziggy stardust. perhaps this is why the glam genre pretty much tailed off after this; nobody could measure up to this for all of the previous reasons. anyways, this is the essential buy; while the track listing on the wide release is sufficient, this tells the whole story and any other version would be incomplete to me.

One of the Greatest Albums of All TIme! Too Bad about the Sound!.......2007-05-19
I have a few versions of this brilliant, seminal album and for some reason, the Rykodisc version still sounds the best. This mini lp replica sleeve version though is a treat because it faithfully replicates the original lp packaging and includes all the lyrics in both English and Japanese. The cardboard that is used is rather thin though and I have seen better mlps packaging like the ones done for the Hall & Oates and Bob Dylan albums but I guess I've also seen worse too.
The downside though is that there are no bonus tracks like on the Rykodisc version. There's no "John, I'm Only Dancing" and "Velvet Goldmine" for example which is a real shame. Although extra tracks don't always add to the enjoyment of new re-releases, they did do so however where the Rykodisc version is concerned.
Plus points: nice mlps packaging, average sound quality.
Minus points: not as good sound quality and tracks wise when compared to the Rykodisc version.
Unless you really need to get the mlps packaging, give this one a miss if you already have the Rykodisc version.

David Bowie's final concert as his most famous alter ego is one of the more legendary shows in the rock canon, but aficionados have frequently held this audio document, as recorded by Dylan/Monterey Pop documentary director D. A. Pennebaker, in somewhat low regard. Of course, the wonderful Ziggy Stardust album was such a pristine production that any live reproduction suffers in comparison, but fans may notice a significant improvement three decades later. Whether time has made the closer-to-garage-rock ethos of the live Spiders from Mars play better or whether it just sounds better is hard to say. But this 30th anniversary version does sound a whole lot better than all previous versions. Producer Terry Visconti has remastered what was once murk into something that sounds crisp and clear. The new packaging is lovely and the entire concert--incidental intro music and all--is documented for the first time. Pity the rights couldn't be re-secured to include Jeff Beck's long-deleted appearance on "Jean Genie," and Jacque Brel's "My Death" is still a tad melodramatic. But you also get most of the great Ziggy tunes, a few earlier classics, several from the then-unreleased Aladdin Sane, a terrific "All the Young Dudes," and perhaps the best cover ever of the Velvet Underground's "White Light/White Heat." --Bill Holdship

WOW.......2005-10-29
Great CD
Possibly one of the best Live recordings ever.
Both discs are fantastic.
Worth the money
Poor recording but high on the fun scale.......2005-05-18
Unfortunately, Tony Visconti had very little to work with when remixing this album. In particular, the ever-impressive piano parts sound muffled, as if only a faraway microphone covered by a pillow was picking up the sound. The liner notes explain the sound problems to an extent, but it still seems like a crime that this historic concert was recorded so badly.
Despite the technical problems, this album has many highlights, including a veeeeeery long Width of a Circle and the most moving rendition I've heard of My Death.
If you don't mind some DIY rough edges, you will find plenty to enjoy in the manic playing of the Spiders From Mars, and, of course, Bowie retiring Ziggy onstage is of no small significance.
Vastly improved Visconti mix.......2003-06-09
If you are putting off buying this because you have heard previous versions (on vinyl or CD), wait no longer. This release features incredible sound in comparison to earlier versions. Thanks to Tony Visconti for cleaning things up so nicely.
This disc is worth having for The wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud/All the Young Dudes Medley alone.
A must for any Bowie fan! Only the continued absence of The Jean Genie featuring Jeff Beck keeps this from being a perfect Five.
Spectacular sound, great performance.......2003-04-14
This new mix of Bowie's legendary "farewell" concert in 1973 is in every way an improvement on the Rykodisc release. I originally owned the album on a two-record vinyl LP set, and for the first time, it sounds like a concert rather than a live recording. The balance between the ambient noise of the crowd and the performance is much more realistic, the bass and piano have more punch, the guitar is jackhammer solid, and Bowie's vocals sound better than ever.
In contrast to previous audio releases on vinyl and CD, this contains the soundtrack as presented in the film. The original 2-disc vinyl release, and subsequent CD reissues, not only have a mix that's markedly different from what you hear in the movie, but some of the performances are different. For example:
In the older issues, on "Wild Eyed Boy from Freecloud" Bowie hits a spectacular high note on the last word ("free") and holds it for several seconds as the band segues into "All the Young Dudes". It's a spine tingling moment, one of the high points of the recording... but it's not here --- and it's not in the movie. Bowie sings an ordinary low note at the transition.
I saw the movie in a theater and again on VHS and laserdisc, and recently watched the new DVD release. I'd forgotten how strong these differences were! Some of them can be attributed to the difference in the mix, but others must have been taken from a previous performance.
This new mix is a dramatic improvement in every way; but I'm going to hang on to my old Ryko CD; I miss that high note. It
really makes a difference!

Lady stardust sang his songs........2006-01-28
This is probably David Bowie's best known album. It's a concept album about an alien who becomes a rock star. Truly a classic, possibly the ultimate glam rock album. Try to get the Rykodisc version, it has five bonus tracks. The biggest revelation among the bonus tracks is "Sweet Head", a previously unreleased song from the Ziggy recording sessions that is every bit as good as the songs that actually made it onto the album.
Hang onto this album, it's Bowie's legendary classic!.......2005-12-21
The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars (1972.), David Bowie's fifth studio album
As the 1970's progressed, David Bowie became recognised as a music legend. However, in the early part of his career, Bowie was much less known and hadn't yet broken through into the mainstream, even though he'd released classic albums such as 'Hunky Dory'. This all changed in 1972 with the release of the 'Ziggy Stardust' concept album. David Bowie's newly adopted persona in the album transformed him into a famous star overnight. Over time, David Bowie's glam rock styled 'Ziggy Stardust' has been hailed as his ultra-definitive album and perhaps as his greatest. So does 'Ziggy Stardust' live up to its great reputation?
'Ziggy Stardust' is unlike any other album I've heard. Even though the style is totally glam rock, a trend which was very popular in music in the early 70's, the concept around the album and the whole transformation Bowie made himself within the work is what makes it pretty unique. The concept of the album aside, all of the tracks on the album hold up individually in their own right. There are plenty of great concept albums such as 'The Wall' by Pink Floyd or 'Tommy' by The Who which require you to listen to the album as a whole to 'get' all of the tracks in context; with 'Ziggy Stardust', there is no such problem and all of the songs can be well appreciated as unrelated songs. This is why plenty of the songs, such as 'Starman' and 'Suffragette City' achieved popular status and plenty of radio play. Bowie and his backing band capture the glam style brilliantly. Mick Ronson is one of the main stars of the album with some legendary inspired solos plus the piano intertwines on some of the songs are played by him. The music on the album has a crisp and fresh sound to it and hasn't aged at all. You can tell the music is 70's glam but at the same time it never sounds dated.
In the past ten or fifteen or so years, the David Bowie album series has undergone a number of remasters. The first of these was the 1990 remaster series which features the original 11 track album and bonus tracks including songs 'Velvet Goldmine' and the single 'John I'm Only Dancing'. Since then, an enhanced series of Bowie albums has become available and this is the version you're most likely to find on the CD shop shelf. These new versions have awesome sound quality for the original albums and come with well constructed booklets of lyrics however the enhanced CD's have no bonus tracks featuring like the earlier version. This is a shame because the remasters are excellent and it seems strange that they miss off extras that feature on an earlier version!
The album is the epic saga of a space rock stars ascent to superstardom and his subsequent fall. 'Five Years' gets the album going; a footstep sounding drum opening leads into a great piano driven song. Bowie gives a pleading vocal performance about the end of the world drawing near. The orchestral background and whirlwind finish is classic. The glam style then truly kicks in with 'Soul Love'. This is one of the really catchy songs off the album, with some great driving guitar work from Mick Ronson and a great saxophone interlude. Bowie is a more than capable saxophone player and it is probably his most underrated musical ability. 'Moonage Daydream' for me is the height of this great album. This spacey sounding song rocks in great style. Epic, moody choruses contrasted by punchy verses make this song great and Mick Ronsons futuristic sounding exit solo is phenominal. 'Starman', another one of Bowie's most famous songs follows. This is another great, catchy song with a space theme. To finish the first side of the album is 'It Ain't Easy'. A good song, although probably the weakest on the album - ironically Bowie didn't write this one! The song has a killer chorus with wailing guitars.
'Lady Stardust' then 'Star' open up the second half of the album. Both songs are great glam rocking songs; 'Lady Stardust' is especially great with a great piano melody carrying the tune. Another famous track, 'Hang On To Yourself' is next. This is a great fast paced song with a great guitar riff and inspired 'C'mon C'mon' chorus. Then, who could forget the opening guitar sequence of 'Ziggy Stardust'. Bowie sings the story of the rise and fall of the rock n' roll star; another one of the albums highlights. 'Suffragette City' follows; another classic glam sounding song with a driving riff and a really cool chorus. However, after all of these pretty upbeat songs, the album closes on a more mellow and darker note in the 'Rock n' Roll Suicide'. Lyrically brilliant, this acoustic starting song builds to an emphatic climax before finishing with the grand sound of a string orchestra.
The 'Ziggy Stardust' album immortalised David Bowie. This, coupled with his famous 'Ziggy Stardust' tour which followed are some of the highlights of his great career. This album is up there with his other great works such as 'Hunky Dory' and 'Aladdin Sane'. Bowie's glam rock phase was perhaps his most successful era and this masterpiece has it all. If your looking to start a Bowie album collection, this is the work to begin with.
MY RATING: 9.5/10

Top 70,s CLASSIC album of All-TIME.
perfect timing, beat, vocals, instruments, ffffffreak out in a moonage daydream ooohhhhhh yyyyyeeeeaaaaa ----rock musics favorite era was topped by this HEAVY metal opera. Defined the times, god bless mr. bowie....
One of the Greatest Albums of All TIme and Good Sound Too!.......2005-08-27
Thank you Dr Toby Mountain! He's the dude that's credited with the digital mastering of this RykoDisc version of Bowie's classic album. I remember owning this on cassette too and it still sounded great!
Anyways, this disc with the extra tracks especially "John, I'm Only Dancing" and "Velvet Goldmine" is a really good one to get. I see it's out of print but the other remastered versions out there make me wonder whether it's worth it getting them when this version is so very good already.
Great tracks and great sound so I'm holding on to this version that I have until they truly come up with a good reason for me to get another version. Mmm, maybe something with the same tracks but remastered and coming in a Japanese, LP-style miniature slipcase? Might just do it...
In case you haven't yet heard Ziggy and are wondering what this is all about, wonder no longer and get yourself a copy, even if it's a used RykoDisc version, it's still good. I'm not exaggerating when I say that this is at least as good as if not better than "Sgt. Pepper's..." for too many reasons to be mentioned here in this review. Maybe, I'll write an article someday if someone will pay me for it... : )
