"Many years from now" must have seemed like an understatement to 16-year-old Paul McCartney, wondering if he'd still be needed or fed at the age of 64. As it turned out, all doubt as to the latter had ceased by his 22nd birthday (though few could have predicted he'd end up washing down those meals with the liquid pride of Seattle). As to the former? Now that McCartney, as of the date of this album's release, has reached that mythic age, his greatest work is 40 years behind him, his solo peak over 30 years gone. Does the world need a new Paul McCartney album? The answer is yes, at least as much as it needs anything else that passes for music these days. With Memory Almost Full, Macca is back. No, it's not Ram or Band on the Run. It might not even be Flowers in the Dirt--in 1989, he had a full band, the support of Linda, and Elvis Costello as a collaborator. Here, he's on his own. Literally: on the majority of the tracks, everything but the strings is multi-instrumentalist Paul. But the surprise is that it's one of his freest, loosest affairs in years, sonically reminiscent of the Tug of War/Pipes of Peace era with nods to Abbey Road in the album-closing medley, McCartney's gravelly tones on "Gratitude," and 2007's version of "Her Majesty," the palate-cleansing "Nod Your Head." It's a surprise because of the album's inescapable sense of retrospection ("Ever Present Past," "Vintage Clothes," "That Was Me") and even a bit of weariness. The next-to-last song is "The End of the End," after all, in which McCartney tells us about what he'd like to happen "on the day that I die." (He wants "songs that were sung/to be hung out like blankets/that lovers have played on/and laid on while listening to songs that were sung," and will likely get his wish.) But it never gets overwhelming, for McCartney mostly resists his tendency to get plodding and maudlin. In fact, Memory Almost Full must be the most sanguine album made during the dissolution of a marriage since...well, ever. "What went out is coming back," he sings in "Vintage Clothes," and from the sound of things, that may not be just wishful thinking. What's past is prologue; if we're lucky, what to come may be McCartney's late renaissance. --Benjamin Lukoff

McCartney Pop Gem.......2007-07-16
This is an excellent example of Paul's lyricism and inventive melody making. If you like the Beatles, you will like this one.
Memory Almost Full.......2007-07-16
This cd is great! I love to listen Paul sing. He has a wonderful imagination and voice is still the same. I hope to hear more in the future.
The hits just keep on coming!.......2007-07-15
This is a great CD! Much better than the last one he turned out. I guess he got rid of the 'bad karma' that was holding him back. Looking forward to more great songs from this great artist!
Almost Full / Almost Great.......2007-07-15
While this is clearly not McCartneys best work ever, I doubt anything ever will be. Blame it on nostalgia, or the fact that I am growing older myself, but it will never be what it once was. Still, it is very good. Every bit as good as Chaos, perhaps better in some ways. I found the "single" Dance Tonight ,to be in my opinion the weakest track on the album. Er sorry disc, see I am growing old. Tracks like Vintage Clothes, and The End of the End found their way into my personal favorites on the i Pod. Ever Present Past is by far the strongest song McCartney has recorded in years. He has finally come to grips with the fact that it is ok to be a Beatle, a frontman for Wings, a guy that loves to make music, and most of all, it appears he has found comfort with being Paul. Sure it's not Abbey Road, but then I'm not sneaking in through many bathroom windows anymore myself. Thanks Paul, a fine album overall.
Harsh and Grating.......2007-07-14
My wife and I grew up with the Beatles. We like Paul McCartney's songs. We both found the music on this album harsh and grating (nearly every song). In addition, the songs find no new ways to say anything. Same old stuff, not nice to listen to. We regret the purchase.

Time to retire and rest on your laurels.......2007-07-18
To say that I am disappointed in this compilation of McCartney music is an uderstatement. What was Sir Paul smoking when he conceived this idea? He has written these stupid essays and sung them into songs. And the essays are terrible and mindless.
Sir Paul, you are 64 and I will still send you a valentine, if you stop writing trashy music. And in the end, the love you take is equal to the love you make. This one is sad.
It is time to retire and rest on your laurels.
Paul is still on top !.......2007-07-16
Paul is still on top of his game !
Excellent music !!!
Recommend to all.
Dreadful! Sad!.......2007-07-16
The first two tracks are the only ones I can stand to listen to. The rest, I tried once but kept fast-forwarding about 30 seconds into each song. I was listening to this in the kitchen and my husband came in and said, "GOD! Is THIS the new McCartney CD? Pretty sad!" I couldn't have said it better.
Memory may already be full..........2007-07-14
I've been humming the melody to "Dance Tonight" since I first heard it. Then it came to me...I've heard it before!
Take a listen to John Lennon's "Dear Yoko" and see what you think.
Fire the engineer!.......2007-07-14
I've been a Paul McCartney fan since the Beatles hit America. The material in "Memory Almost Full" is some of his best effort in years, and should please most McCartney fans. HOWEVER... the recording quality on most Beatles songs was FAR better. This CD is recorded SO LOUD that it overdrives a CD player's D-to-A conversion circuits. I realize many of today's listeners prefer their music on a 3-inch speaker with the same frequency response as AM radio of the early 1950's. But Paul McCartney appeals to an older audience and SOME of us have good stereo systems. What a shame that such excellent material and performances are recorded with only slightly better fidelity than two tin cans on a string! And the "Deluxe" edition is in an "overkill" case, fatter than a DVD movie case, which will fit in NO ONE'S CD rack! I'd give Paul's efforts an A+, but the engineering and packaging earns an F.

From Amazon.co.uk Review
As fine an album as this might be (and indeed it is), it serves a much higher purpose for which it must be immediately recognised. The twee Swedish trio have single-handedly tugged whistling out of popular music's pits where it was stuffed by German soft metal granddads The Scorpions back in the early 90s. It's not even particularly proficient whistling - it's a bit skewiff really, a little out of tune - but it's tacked onto the irresistibly bobbing, Velvet-Underground-via-The-Concretes infectiousness of "Young Folks", augmented by the warm-ember vocals of ex-Concrete Victoria Bergsman herself, and by association sounds fairly heroic. Accidentally anthemic, perhaps, but anthemic nonetheless. Result.
Which sets a tone for the rest of this off-kilter lo-fi record. Draw a slightly wonky line from Simon & Garfunkel through to The Shins, making sure you take in the sharp Scandinavian indie-pop of the '90s (Wannadies, The Cardigans) and modern day peers (Radio Dept, Shout Out Louds) and you have a folk album that isn't really all that folk, swimming through its own dreamy washes of ambition. The drumming on tracks like "Let's Call It Off" and "Paris 2004" is so elementary you might as well add your own, but it keeps the intuitive, simplistic 60's beat melodies trickling steadily onwards. The underlying appeal is that things could snap like an elastic band at any moment, that things are beautifully limited. Less writers block, more loving the detail of your first chapter so much you have no inclination to move on. --James Berry

Writers Block-buster!.......2007-06-28
This record is beautiful. It could have been a cd of just "Young Folks" being played over and over and i would have been happy but there are plenty of gems here, and you don't have to dig very deep to find them. I highly reccommend this album to anyone who loves life, girls, boys, The Beatles, the crisp morning air tightening your face as you first step out of your building onto the street as city buses shamble by and you feel like you're just on the verge of a some kind of "happening" but it hasn't fully been realised yet- but soon will be.
A little Plain?.......2007-06-27
In my never ending search for new talents I chose this CD from the best list of whatever year it was released (I am in a constant state of light buzz so small details become meaningless). At a first listen I found their sound somewhat simplistic or plain? On the extra tracks I did come across a simple but very nice song about the material which I did enyoy quite a bit. The one with the catchy whistling that I have heard on a music channel on TV is too plain and uneventful but as a whole so far the CD was okey, nothing to die and go to the moon for, good vocals, accessible melodies with about three songs that stood above the rest. One of the songs in the album was this distorted guitars that did not appeal at all, to its credit it did not last very long. Mixed feelings about Peter Bjorn and John, perhaps is the type of music but I have always believed that in the end Music is Music and either you are the best or up there with the best or not. "Writer's Block" so far (only 1 listen) is kind of a lukewarm affair and that does not qualify them as a "sizzling hot" release exactly. 3.5 Stars would be my take, not quite enough to get a 4 stars but hey, who am I to be so judgemental and critical, if they want their 4 stars they can have it. The half star rating is very important because let's say an album is higher that a 4 star but not quite the perfection of a 5 star, what do you do? Go cry to the local lonely hearts club band? Let's just say that if I was giving a party "Writer's Block" could not make it to the rotation, their sound is too Plain? No disrespect intended, just calling them as I see them. No, it is not a 3 star, it's a 3.5 star but since there is none available I choose 4 stars. It does has its moments but it is not a vital, must have so far. There, I said it, either you deliver thrills or just pay bills!
I seriously don't get it..........2007-06-19
I don't understand the praise this album is getting. I have no idea why "young folks" gets played so often on the radio. I can't stand that song. I got the album, not having heard even one bad thing about it, and I honestly do not hear anything redeeming with this group. People tell me that they get a nostalgic feeling while listening to this, but I don't see it. I've wanted to ask people "what do you see in these guys? why do you like this?!?" but I don't want to be rude. But seriously, why is this so popular?
I give it an A.......2007-05-21
Have been hearing the song "Young Folks" on the radio and like it. Decided to buy the whole CD and I sure am glad I did! This is great stuff. A little bit folk, a little bit rock-and-roll, a little bit electronic. "Amsterdam" is a super-interesting, very different song and is my favorite on the album. "Let's Call it Off" is good too. All in all some catchy tunes and a super album.
Jay Leno.......2007-05-19
These two, whom I've never heard before last night, kind of took me back for a moment. I thought I was listening to a new revived Figurine album which is greatly anticipated from that dynamic trio.
I liked the sound, and although faintly mumbled by the poorest sound engineer in Cali. I was able to get a feel for what this Swedish pop group can do. I suggest, if I may, making it yourself.
If you feel the music, live by it, you know they will come to hear it. This group tends to remind me of the smae hope.

Aaron Gillespie is a man obsessed. Whether he's out in front of The Almost, his new, eagerly anticipated rock-based project, or behind the drum kit for Underoath, the Clearwater, Florida-bred songwriter/musician can't help but throw himself into everything he does.
With Southern Weather, The Almost lets Gillespie put a different, more melodic side of himself on display. Hoping to follow in the footsteps of his idol Dave Grohl, who stepped out from behind his drum kit to capture the rock world's hearts as one of the genre's most visible frontmen, Gillespie has begun a metamorphosis.
The disc's commanding opening track and first single, "Say This Sooner," introduces the album with an attention grabbing, percussion-driven anthem. "I grew up in the Deep South," Gillespie says of the urgent, hook-fostered opener. "Like anyone, I've had struggles along the way. But I am very much informed by Southern values and I think the songs speak to that."
Between his own duties out in front of The Almost and Underoath's touring and recording schedules, Aaron Gillespie is fully committed until 2008. For now, he's a firm believer in his ability to balance both. "Underoath is extremely special to me," he says of the group he co-founded in 1998 which debuted at #2 on the Billboard Album Chart with June 2006's Define The Great Line.
"Southern Weather has got a much broader scope," he continues. "From a 12 year old listening to her iPod on the school bus to a 38-year old guy commuting on a train, I'm excited by the fact that this album can find an audience with a lot of different people."

Underoath without the screaming.......2007-07-06
Very similar to underoath but only singing. The great thing is that my wife will actually listen to this one with me.
Souther Weather- The Almost.......2007-06-27
The first song of the album is great and is probably my favorite song. The first couple songs are great, but i have to say I got a little bored during the middle of the album. I think the last couple of the songs are great though. It is not what i expected. It was just okay. I suggest you try the band Underoath also because the singer of The Almost is the drummer/singer in Underoath.

This is a good debut for Aaron and company.I got hooked on these guys after I saw Say This Sooner on the tube, and I bought the the album as soon as it was released.Almost all the tracks are great but my favs are Say This Sooner,I Mostly Copy Other People, and Stop It.Can't Wait to see what these guys release next time.

Wow. This is a great album. go on their myspace and listen to "say this sooner" and trust me you will not be dissappointed. if you like that song you will definitely like this cd. it is very creative, and it breaks from emo and southern rock and alternative... its very tough to define the genre because it really has a fresh sound. the best songs on the cd are "say this sooner" "southern weather" and "call back when im honest". its a pity everyone is so skeptic about this cd just because the frontman is the underoath's drummer. whatever, the guy has talent, i give it up for him. 5 star cd.
Good Christian Rock.......2007-05-14
I'd like to see a little more variety in sound from an album, but overall a good christian rock album.

Writer-director Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire, Say Anything, Singles) was a teenager when Rolling Stone magazine sent him out to write cover stories in the 1970s. Nearly 30 years later, Crowe tells the tale in satisfying fashion and extensive detail with Almost Famous, accompanied by a soundtrack that accurately reflects the time of his trial by fire. Led Zeppelin have never before licensed a performance to a soundtrack, so "That's the Way" earns the distinction. A live version of Lou Reed's "Waiting for the Man" performed by David Bowie in 1972 typifies the emerging underground glam movement. Classic rock from Simon & Garfunkel, Rod Stewart, Elton John, and Yes fill things out. Cat Stevens's "The Wind" is rescued from the Timberland commercial. Nancy Wilson of Heart contributes the original score (one track, "Lucky Trumble," featured here) and a track by the fictitious hard-rock band Stillwater, whose "Fever Dog" sounds like a lost track from the hard-rock-guitar wars of the 1970s. Add in tracks by garage-rock faves the Seeds, soul strutter Clarence Carter, and Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allman Brothers Band and you've got an expansive collection of tunes to sift through. More than 50 songs are featured in the film. Next question: when's volume 2? --Rob O'Connor

The Movie Made Me Want the CD.......2007-03-16
I bought this CD because I loved the music in the movie. I was not let down, just awesome.
I love this movie and I love this soundtrack..........2007-02-24
but I wish, like many reviewers have already stated, that it contained some more of the wonderful music that was played in the film. Personally I would have been happy if Hendrix, Black Sabbath, and more Zeppelin were included! A two-disc soundtrack would have been awesome! With that said, the songs that are on here are fantastic!!! Among the others I really love simple man, fever dog, tiny dancer and something in the air! If you loved the movie, buy it! If you're into classic rock, buy it! If you've never seen the movie...you must! The heart of the movie IS the music!
One Of The Best Movie Sound Tracks, Evah.......2006-10-30
Cameron Crowe has great taste in music. Every movie that he has ever made, also has a great soundtrack to go with it and this is no exception. Basically, the movie Almost Famous was an autobiography of a young Cameron Crowe. When he was fifteen years old, he was already writing for Rolling Stone Magazine. Geesh, when I was fifteen I was just learning to write my name...
I really like this album because there are songs on it that you just don't hear on ordinary music stations...even the so called 'classic rock' stations. To hear the Seeds singing, Mr. Farmer, threw me back to the day when my cousin had the original 45 of the group. There is also the infamous group, Stillwater, the group which the movie is focused on. Stillwater wasn't actually a real group in the 70s, but the song that they played in the movie, 'Fever Dog' sounds like something pulled out from that crazy time. I think it was actually written by Peter Frampton who was practically rock 'n roll royalty in the mid 70s with his classic two album masterpiece, Frampton Comes Alive. Here's a shocker for you if you didn't already know this, parts of Frampton Comes Alive was done in the studio and the background of clapping and cheering was put in later. Sorry to bum you out...oh, and you know the tooth fairy, she doesn't exist, either...so take the tooth out from under your pillow. For godssakes, you're 39 years old....
But this record is no fairy tale, it's a real solid entry on my favorite movie soundtracks list. The first being from the movie, Singles, which was also, coincidentally enough, also by Cameron Crowe. For the most part, I tend to lean toward jazz and soul music, but I still love great rock 'n roll, and this compilation has everything from mellow Cat Stevens to the loud and racous the Who playing a little known instrumental called, Sparks, and it is all great stuff.
So, are you gonna get it or what? I'm done blabbering. I'm just waiting for Big Foot and the Loch Ness Monster and we're gonna go to lunch...

In response to Str8upChevy, there is a 6 song Stillwater EP as part of the Almost Famous Untitled - Director's Cut DVD. It has all the songs they play in the movie plus a couple others.
Stillwater.......2006-08-11
I now realize that Stillwater wasn't an actual band, but does anyone know who performed the songs that are considered to be "Stillwater" songs? As soon as I seen the movie, I immediatly came to the computer to look up the band Stillwater. That sound I heared from the songs they played in the movie are exactly what I love listening to, so to find out that it isn't even a real band.....that was depressing. I already have 90% of everything else in the movie, as that was what I grew up listening to, so it was nice to hear such great songs in one movie. I highly recommend this soundtrack to anyone that's reading these reviews. If anyone knows how to obtain more of the Stillwater tracks played in the movie, please let me know or post it here. Thanks!!

In today's worship-crazed phase of Christian pop, Mercy Me fits right in with smooth melodies, passionate lyrics, and a vertical focus. Yet the transition from worship band to major-label act demands more. Almost There promises just enough to allow it to rise above its inconsistencies. Prayer of Jabez-inspired "Bless Me Indeed" is a glimmer of brilliance where the group brings it all together, but it's the poignancy and power of "I Can Only Imagine" that testifies to Mercy Me's great potential. The dramatic ballad captures a believer's hope for the afterlife and is fueled by Bart Millard's authoritative vocals. The song will continue to be a staple in church worship services for years to come. Then there are the not so brilliant moments, including the cheesy "House of God" and "All Fall Down." Weak moments aside, Almost There offers enough fireworks to make Mercy Me an act to watch. --Michael Lyttle

Great CD.......2007-03-10
I love this CD. They have songs you never get tired of listening too. I also have their Spoken for CD along with Coming up to Breathe, personally I like their Spoken for Cd better than Coming up to breathe.
Pitiful.......2007-02-03
I can imagine alot of re-borns swooning over this piece of trash as they faint while gibbering incomprehensible garblings.
Amazing.......2007-01-16
I bought this CD as a gift for a close friend and she loves it!!!!
Almost There by Mercy Me.......2007-01-10
I loved this CD. I Can Only Imagine is a beautiful song that has touched everyone in my family. My kids ask to hear this CD everytime we are in the car.
Never Knew Why It Took So Long.......2006-12-08
In the wake of Christian rock bands who are trying to extend their spiritual message in a secular way, perhaps to reach a new audience, Mercy Me continues to stand out and impress with their blatant and unhindered worship songs that fill the airwaves with the perfect words to honor God. I have not heard one song by Mercy Me that did not make me nod my head in agreement or shout out loud to glorify the Lord. Now I can't understand why it took me so long to find my way to songs that openly worship, as opposed to songs that send subtle messages to the public that they may never get without a little help.
Bart Millard has one of the most soothing yet uplifting voices in the business. It is hard to listen to only a few minutes of his voice and not want more. It is also great to know that the band's growing fame has never weakened their desire to honor God in everything they do. They will remain a role model for other bands who wish to worship without fear of ridicule or lack of popularity. As Mercy Me has shown, "...We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose."

Amazon.com essential recording
By 1972, Elton John was already a rising star in America, although most casual listeners still identified him as part of the singer/songwriter explosion, thanks to the success of "Your Song" and "Levon." Honky Château changed all that, beginning with the success of "Honky Cat," a rousing New Orleans-ish R&B powerhouse that kicks off this terrific collection of songs. This was the album that first revealed John as a pure-pop craftsman, and he's all over the musical map on this set, moving from country-ish rock to blues-based rockers. But the best things here still might be two gorgeous ballads: "Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters" (displaying the young vocalist at his best) and the hit single "Rocket Man" (which had many rock fans debating which was the better space odyssey of the day--this or Bowie's). And lyricist Bernie Taupin was revealing a new, slightly darker side here via tunes like "I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself." --Bill Holdship

The Honky Cat breaks from the pack.......2007-06-12
The first three Elton John albums found many pegging him as a singer/songwriter, and the more straightforward songs among "Elton John," "Tumbleweed Connection" and "Madman Across the Water" were certainly easy to construe as such. But then came "Honky Chateau," where Elton's tentative steps into more rock territory found traction. Many of the trademarks of those early albums are still here (the naked emotionalism, the fascination with America's rural south), but he was also discovering the edge - like Jon Luc Ponty's violin solo on "Amy" -that concert goers had been buzzed with.
The first single, "Honky Cat," was the harbinger. Set more to a New Orleans piano roll than any previous song, it was poppier than any of his other singles. "Rocket Man" immediately raised the bar. Riding the same trail David Bowie and Major Tom did, "Rocket Man" followed a space oddity of an astronaut with job satisfaction issues; "It's just my job, five days a week." These two hits pushed Elton and lyricist Bernie Taupin off and away from their past labels and moved then onto a fast lane towards rock stardom. Throughout the other songs on the album, Elton's strength for melodies was in full bloom and his confidence was growing, while Bernie's words were as oblique as ever (which was one of his strongest suites).
That motion was also significantly aided by the codification of Elton's band. Stalwarts Nigel Olsson, Dee Murray and Davey Johnston sounded terrific here, recording as Elton's backing for the first time. They matched Elton's flair, making songs like "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" and "I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself" spark. Gus Dudgeon obviously understood what Elton was aiming for and kept his production to a more minimal level than on the other albums. The result was the first Elton John album to reflect the personality that would come to dominate the public image of his showmanship. It also became the first of Elton's seven consecutive #1 albums.
Elton Goes Pop........2007-04-24
I have the greatest admiration and affection for Elton John. He has tackled and conquered most styles of music with great success. HONKY CHATEAU is his fifth album, released in May 1972. I hope to review all his seventies albums and this is the first I drew "out of the hat".
After his two previous albums which were artistic, but not commercial triumphs, Elton went for the larger audience with HONKY CHATEAU and created a more pop orientated album, without sacrficing his artistic ideals. He started to shake off the obsession with the American Wild West and sang about more modern subjects. Americana is atill in evidence especially on HONKY CAT, SLAVE, MONA LISAS AND MAD HATTEERS and ROCKET MAN but it is more varied. Nothing wrong with that as I was getting tired of hearing about people labelled as "guns" in his previous albums. The seeds of what can be described as Elton's band, Nigel Olsson, Davey Johnstone and Dee Murray originated here and they were the core of musicians during Elton's golden period in the early and mid 70's. Even Ray Cooper plays on some tracks.
The cover is one of the most misleading I have seen. Who is that bearded, serious guy? Surely a better cover could have been deivsed. Anyway to the album itself. I would like to give it 4.5 stars but am not allowed by the rating system. Song titles are followed by the song time.
It kicks off with HONKY CAT (5.13). I haven't heard Elton having this much fun since he sang THE CAGE on his self-titled album which was three albums previous. This is a great song with great Taupin lyrics. Definitely one of my favourites.
Next is MELLOW (5.32). This one I can skip although most reviewrs consider it a highlight. I like the verse but not the chorus and it goes on too long. On of my peeves with artists is songs that go on longer than they should. This is one of them. Too many chorus repeats.
Song 3 is I THINK I"M GOING TO KILL MYSELF (3.34). This is very light-hearted and not to be taken seriously. Just listen to the arrangement! Honky-tonk piano, tap dancing and spoons. Sounds like a big spoof.
SUSIE (DRAMAS) (3.24). Another favourite and it is the first gutsy song on the album. The Dramas part escapes me and is not necessary. BLACK-EYED SUSIE would have been a better song title.
Then comes ROCKET MAN (4.41). One of Elton's biggest hits. Great tune, great vocal, great arrangement but some of the lyrics are lazy especially in Verses 3 and 4. "Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids. In fact it's cold as hell" are two wonderful lines but what follows "and there's no-one there to raise them if you did" doesn't make much sense". The next verse about "it's just my job five days a week, a rocket man" etc is also a letdown.
The next two songs: SALVATION (3.58) and SLAVE (4.20) are the two most dismissed songs by other reviewers. SALVATION is quit a nice song with a gospel feel to it but I think SLAVE is a highlight. It has a very laid back whimsical feel to it although the lyrics are on the angry side and it is rare on an Elton song that the keyboards take a back seat. Great acoustic guitar, country guitar and banjo all played by Davey Johnstone!
AMY (4.03) is probably the weirdest song on the album and one of Elton's most unique songs in that there is no tune!. You cannot sing or whistle it but that is why I like it. Very odd lyrics but I love the line "Amy you're the girl that wrecks my dreams". Aslo listen to the bizarre electric violin played by Jean-Luc Ponty!
MONA LISAS AND MAD HATTERS (5.00) gets the most praise and it does hit the nail on the head about New York City. My only problem is that it cries out for a third verse and not an amalgamation of Verses 1 + 2. I feel the song is over half-way through and it has nothing to say for the last two minutes. Sorry for going against the grain of thinking. But it is my one main gripe about Elton John in that some songs could be shorter. TINY DANCER, MY FATHER"S GUN, BENNIE AND THE JETS and SOMEONE SAVED MY LIFE TONIGHT are other examples.
Last song is HERCULES (5.20) which is a lot of fun and ends the album on a fun singalong note! Obscure lyrics again from Bernie. I can just about glean from the words that it is about a girl in love with a muscle boy but the words incorporate much more that I cannot fathom.
There is also a bonus track, a fast rocking version of SLAVE(2.51) which is worth listening to but the album version is much better.
one of the best.......2007-03-15
Like most other reviewers have said this is a great album.
Although Rocket Man and Honky Cat were big singles, I actually prefer some of the album tracks. Mellow is a great gospel influenced track. Hercules is cracking rock 'n' roll song. Its a very happy album, and there isn't really a poor track on it.
For me probably only beaten by Tumbleweed and Yellow Brick Road. Its probably also a good buy for anyone new to Elton's music as well, as there isn't the darkness of some of the earlier albums (which are very good as well but more of an aquired taste), or the sometimes overly MOR later albums.

got this one because of mona lisas and the madhatter. great song. what can you say elton does it agian.
Classic EEJ!.......2007-01-12
Being a diehard Eltonite since '71, of CORSE I LOVE this LP (ok, CD)...
We begin with Honky Cat ("WHOO"!). Next: we "mellow" out with "Mellow".
1 of my all time faves is " I Think I'm Gonna Kill Myself!" as :1, it's a campy tongue in cheek number, & 2: at the time, I was in High School.
Enuff said! "Suzie (Dramas)" is next followed by my all time epic fave:
Rocket Man!!! Side 2 starts with "Salvation". Then "Slave"& rock out to
"Amy". Calming down with "Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters" & we conclude with (a cat named) "Hercules!" (EJ's middle name, as it were!) BOOGIE ON!!!

Spectacular Breakthrough.......2007-06-04
The great rising band The Academy Is has a impressive album out called "Almost Here".This spectactuler breakthrough band has many wonderful songs and I have to say they are all splendid and exceptional. I recommend this band for everyone, especially if you're into alternative and up-beat music. This music is great for blasting in front of friends and family. I have to say this is a great band with many fun songs. This album is sure to be treasured by all. Can't go wrong here, no siree!
..........2007-02-06
as others mentioned, if you like fall out boy or panic! at the disco, you most likely will like the academy is...probably just because they're all fueled by ramen bands; they all pretty much go hand-in-hand.
but as for the CD, I think it's amazing. I honestly could listen to the whole thing and not skip one song (that's saying a lot coming from me).
and also, the lyrics are suprisingly good, in my opinion. they're clear and easy to comprehend and that's what I like.
I don't know, just something about this band is unique to me and there's something I just love. I'm never ashamed to admit how much I love them and I think they deserve every ounce of credit they get.
hopefully, I'll be able to see them on tour with fall out boy (genius tour...I was hoping so much that they'd open for FOB...two of my absolute favorite bands) if the tickets don't sell out within seconds of going on sale. I'd really love to see what their live performance is like.
all in all, definitely a great CD.
I need to write this, so 'I'm going to be like everyone else'.......2007-01-07
I got this CD for Christmas, and I found it to be one of the best CDs I have ever owned. Sure, everyone says' "This CD is awesome." Well, this is CD is truly great. If you like bands like Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco, then you will definately like The Academy Is... I found them highly addictive, William Beckett's voice is spectacular. I would seriously tell anyone who needs a little light rock in their lives to buy this CD. It truly is great.
The best lyrics that you'll ever hear.......2006-11-10
When i first bought the CD i only listened to the first couple of songs on the it.I thought they were probably the best lyrics that i'll ever hear. But then i started listening to the rest of the songs. The lyrics are phenomenal and the music is to die for. I use the song and song lyrics were ever i can; in my profile, on my myspace, in my blog, and i write the lyrics all over my notebook. It's just to good to stay hidden.
Almost.......2006-11-10
Im not going to lie this band is really good the only problem with the cd is that is really short. They have a wonderful fresh new sound. This cd should not be passed up.

Oh, my GOD!
I haven't stopped listening to this cd since I purchased it.
It's like crack for the ears! This CD is highly addictive!
I love his jazz, pop, soul, and country, combo!
You just don't hear good music like this anymore!
My favorite song is "mississippi river girl", but all of the songs are amazing!!
This passes for funk and soul now? .......2006-04-08
First and formost... White guys can NOT sing soul music. They don't have the charisma or the vocal rhythm to do it. This is just more extremely slick pop music.
Where is the fire and passion?

Customer Reviews:
Great first album by one of the world's greatest rock bands.......2007-02-17
There are overhyped bands and then there are underhyped bands, bands that receive scads of unfair and inaccurate criticism. The Hold Steady definitely falls into the latter category. I find it astonishing that a number of people are willing to dismiss them. Rock critics, who are far more finely attuned to chicanery than average, everyday fans (as the dean of American rock critics, Robert Christgau, has pointed out, if you spend almost every one of your waking hours listening to music, you are going to be better at it than someone who spends only a few hours each week), do not detect the villainous flaws that the band's detractors do. In fact, their most recent album, BOYS AND GIRLS IN AMERICA, was voted by the 494 participating critics (definitely a who's who of writers about music) the Village Voice's 2006 Pazz and Jop Poll the #4 album of the year. Getting 494 top critics to agree about something is a pretty impressive feat.
So, it is utterly safe to ignore the people who dismiss The Hold Steady. The fact isn't that they "got" the band and dismissed it, but that they still haven't a clue. I will allow that some people just have trouble with Craig Finn's voice and perhaps his appearance. He looks today like in ten years he will have the archetypal appearance of a used car dealer. He absolutely does not look like the headliner of a great rock band. Furthermore, while it is hard to deny his amazing gifts as a lyricist, he doesn't sing. Instead, he declaims the lyrics of the song. Few people manage a completely unique "singing" style, but Finn definitely has. Myself, I absolutely love the guy. No, he doesn't sing, but his vocal style perfectly suits the band's aesthetic. And I love the way his lyrics combine equally cynicism, humor, weariness, and more than a little self-deprecation.
So much attention attaches itself to Craig Finn that sometimes the rest of the band escapes notice. But this truly is a fantastic band from top to bottom. Finn might be the most dominating frontman in America today, but Tad Kubler is one of America's greatest guitarists. Indeed, he may have been born outside his time. He is one of the few guitarists around capable of foisting a song onto his back and dominating it for long stretches of time. He would be a legend had he lived in the seventies instead of today, had he lived when long, eight-minute guitar solos were not only acceptable but in demand. Anyone doubting his ability should listen to the second have of "Everyone's a DJ." The ghosts of Leslie West, Alvin Lee, and Ted Nugent haunt every measure. If Craig Finn gives the band most of its identity, Kubler gives it its musical backbone. Though they sound almost nothing like one another, a Finn-Kubler comparison to Jagger-Richards isn't misleading.
Although BOYS AND GIRLS IN AMERICA is The Hold Steady's break out album, I honestly think ALMOST KILLED ME remains their best album. But I say that with the caveat that all three of their albums fall into the "must own" category. No band on planet earth has produced three such perfect albums in the past three years.
Other reviewers have praised "The Swish," which truly is one of the great rock songs of recent years. I actually like "Everyone's a DJ" even more, mainly because of Kubler's long guitar solo. But for brilliant, funny, clever lyrics it is hard to beat "Knuckles." Every single song, however, is infused with great lyrical content, Finn's passionate declamation of the words, and one of the tightest bands in the world pounding out great music. If you love music, you need this album. They do remind you of some of the great bands of the past, though interestingly of bands that normally you do not think of at the same time. What other band sounds like Bruce Springsteen, Thin Lizzy, and the Replacements all at the same time, while also sounding completely unlike them all?
While all three of the Hold Steady's albums should be in the musical library of any music fan, I also encourage more serious collectors to go in search of two albums by the Minneapolis band Lifter Puller, FIESTAS AND FIASCOS and the compilation album SOFT ROCK, which includes virtually everything else Lifter Puller recorded. The reason this is relevant is that the frontman for that band was Craig Finn and the lead guitarist was Tad Kubler. The sound is different from the Hold Steady, but the music is of the same high quality.
One of the best rock albums of 2004........2007-01-29
If you like power chords and clever, intelligent lyrics, this CD is for you. "The Swish" is in the running for rock song of the decade, and the rest of the album is solid. It manages to be completely original, and at the same time heartily celebrates its influences. Frontman Craig Finn doesn't sing as much as he rants, and in this way his delivery is somewhat similar to that of Joe Strummer.
Hold Steady.......2007-01-09
I love this album. I adore it. I burnt a hole in it. It is not Separation Sunday, but Killer Parties and Most People are DJs are still 2 of my favorite Hold Steady songs.
Why, oh why, hasn't the license holder for Lifter Puller re-released those albums yet?
A little too raw.......2006-12-27
Let me first say that there are no exceptional songs on this album, perhaps with the exception of The Swish. The attitude of the album gives its strength. Another note is that the vocalist, well, doesnt exactly sing much at all. Throughout the album he has an attitude of attempting to bring back "the good old days" and a discontent with the current situation. He seems determined to party, drink, and have a good time. The bar rock side to this music can be easily heard but this gritty and dirty album can rock at times.
This is the Album that made The Hold Steady one of my favorite bands..........2006-11-28
The first thing I heard from them was last year's fantastic "Separation Sunday" - which, although it was great, ended up just outside my top ten for the year.
And then this year, with "Boys & Girls in America" receiving all sorts of praise, and deserving the bulk of it, I managed to pick up a a copy of this, their first album, with only moderate expectations. See, I've heard from various publications (RS and P-fork) that their three-albums-in-three-years were a streak of solid discs reminiscent of Wire's three at the tail end of the 70s - and I'm a sucker for comparisons, so I had to go back to the beginning and hear this one to see if the name-dropping was apt.
And in this case it most definitely is.
"Almost Killed Me" is the kind of album that looks better now than it did when it first came out, I think. Like, given the benefit of hindsight, yeah - this was really great, but had I heard it at the time, I may have written it off as an interesting if ultimately unspectacular debut, which many people did (largely as a result of being turned off by Craig Finn's vocals) - and which is a shame. It's also why I'm glad I came to this album in the way that I did - with the benefit of hindsight.
Going back now and listening to this, with excellent album opener "Positive Jam" leading seamlessly into the rollicking "The Swish," it's clear that this is the genius band that now is the Hold Steady in chyrsalis, and that's a beautiful thing.
....and hard drugs are for bartenders, I think I might've mentioned that before...
