Customer Reviews:
Beautiful from start to finish!.......2007-01-17
I don't think I'll ever understand all the hype surrounding Low's Things We Lost In The Fire. While it's a solid release, for my money, this album beats it in every possible way. This is without a doubt my favorite Low album, the perfect bridge between the minimalism of their early releases and the experimentation they've done since then.
Strings, tympani, and piano have been added to their signature guitar-bass-minimal drums trio sound, and they perfectly color every wonderful song. A few experiments with sampling ("I Remember" and "I Don't Understand") also work out pretty well. But moreso than the sounds, it's the songs themselves that make Secret Name so good. "Starfire" may be slow and low key, but it's as good of a pop song as they've ever written. "Weight Of Water" and "Missouri" showcase their religious beliefs without ever feeling preachy. "Will The Night" and "Home" perfectly close an album full of beautiful guitar tones and gorgeous harmonies. But as far as I'm concerned, the real treat here is "Two-step," which might just be the best song they've ever recorded. The voices of Alan (guitar) and his wife Mimi (drums) perfectly compliment each other on this stunning song that is worth the price of the CD by itself.
Low have fast (how ironic) become one of my favorite bands, and they have a number of amazing albums. But if you only own one CD of theirs (which I think would be a tragic mistake), you would be wise to make it Secret Name.
Sublime.......2005-12-05
Low is a band with (prior to The Great Destroyer) a specific sound and M.O. If you didn't like them before, than you are not going to like them now. If you haven't heard them before; Low sounds slow, extremely slow, and very relaxed and restrained. If 6 min. plus songs about sadness and joy sounds like a snoozefest than Low is not for you. If, however, you like slow intricate music Secret Name is their best album, partly experimental but still full of good songs.
mood music.......2005-10-30
slowcore darlings, Low have always been a special kind of band with a unique, although limited appeal. their songs are deep and simple with some beautiful instrumentation and a fragile sense of melody. but they have a gift to write warm melodies that slip and slide so slowly like a whisper or a breeze. "Weight Of Water", "Will The Night", and "Immune" are all genuinely moving songs with a grasp of depth and subtle dynamics that showcase a fabulous mood.
Low's Masterpiece.......2003-05-29
In the progression of Low albums, this record marks a significant change for the Duluth trio. Their first three full lengths, while all filled with wonderful songs, sound quite similar. On Secret Name, Low switches to Kranky as their label, and Albini as their producer. The results are incredible. This is Low coming into their own. This album shows incredible growth and a very noticable improvement in song writing and sound experimentation. They've kept living up to expectations whith their later records in my mind, but this album marks the change and it will stick with you.
I won't go into great details about each song, but this record has the highest concentration of classic Low songs of all their releases. I have yet to meet a fan that doesn't put at least three songs from Secret Name in their top-five favorite Low song list. The progression of Two-Step, Weight of Water, Missouri (sung misery), and Don't Understand is almost too much to take. Beautiful vocal harmonies and some of the most simple, but moving melodies that I've heard in a long time make up these songs.
Low always gets described as a sad sounding band, and this record is the best reason for this. However, I would disagree with this label. Low aren't for sad depressed people, they're for people with longer than average attention spans who like to sit and reflect. People that want tangible substance in their music. If you're one of these people, Low won't make you feel sad. They'll make you feel better.
Lush silence........2002-11-13
Low continued to grow its' indie fan base with the beautiful SECRET NAME, released in 1999. This album continues their wonderful explorations of sound and silence-often more of the latter. This band is unbelievable. Low truly knows how to get just the right sound-their quiet introspection and eerie moodiness couples perfectly with their slow tempos. This results in songs that force you to slow *yourself* down and listen to what is going on. If you need to relax and forget everything else, put on a Low disc.
SECRET NAME contains its share of beauties, the opener "I Remember" is pretty creepy while "Starfire" sounds almost like something a teenager might record in his or her bedroom on their boombox. It has a lilting quality to it despite the sorrowful strings in the background. "Two-Step" is a beautiful showcase for Mimi Parker's restrained optimism while "Weight Of Water" is equally depressing. "Don't Understand" is a throwaway, an instrumental with loops a la the Beatles "Tomorrow Never Knows". It has no lyrics and serves no purpose. It sounds like it would fit better on a SQUAREPUSHER or recent RADIOHEAD album. "Soon", "Immune", and "Lion/Lamb" are just *gorgeous*. The simple chordal structures work perfectly. "Home" is lovely, with its string backing. Overall SECRET NAME is a powerful album, done by slo-core's banner-wavers.
Recommended.

Borders on show tunes.......2005-02-09
The audio quality is great, as is most often the case with Reference Recordings. However, there are far better chorales and compositions than represented on this cd. The content strikes me as saccharine. We're not allowed to mention other recordings in reviews, but I put one idea of some good choral music (chorale la) in the recommended instead section.
Adrenaline and tears this CD fills the soul. a GEM.......1999-10-28
I really like heoric choral/organ/orchestra music. But this is the ONE disc that I think everyone should experience. I recently played this disc at a HiFi Event in Norway. About half the listeners clamored for info on where to buy it. This one is magic, trust me.

Lovely music!.......2001-12-18
These CDs are for lovers of Irish music and of the "old-timey" sound of John McCormack. The songs themselves are lovely, and James Flannery sings them exactly as they need to be sung... in a simple and straightforward manner. The music is evocative of the sound and spirit of a long-ago time. The accompanying book gives interesting background information about Thomas Moore and also about the songs. Good listening for a rainy day or a snowy night with the fire blazing.

These Non Soundtrack CDs are growing on me.......2004-04-16
This is yet another collection of non-soundtrack James Bond movie themes. I like this one. The selections have their own sound yet let you reminisce about each movie in their own unique way.
Good Orchestral Interpretations.......2004-04-14
This CD has some very good orchestral interpretations and arrangements from the James Bond film themes. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE and GOLDFINGER sounded exquisite. This is a good CD for the price. The cover artwork featuring a quasi-gun barrel and likeness of Roger Moore is very nice.
Great variation from a quality orchestra........2001-10-12
I'm not up on the technical side of orchestral music but I can appreciate this. Having a quality orchestra play the themes really does them justice and some of the music I have never heard before was great.

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20
this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.
Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.
Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.
Good Collection.......2005-02-24
Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.
Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10
I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.
The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28
Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.
Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08
This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.

A Pretty Darn Good Lohengrin.......2005-04-14
I got this Lohengrin from the local library, and I tried to get a taste of what I was in for by looking it up here on Amazon.com. But to my dismay there were no reviews. And later, to even greater dismay on my part, I found that there is no reason for such a lack of reviews! For this is a solid Lohengrin. While Peter Hofmann is not the most vocally resplendent Lohengrin (he isn't a Konya or a Domingo), he turns is a good performance, and Karen Armstrong is a passionate Elsa who plays the part admirably. The rest of the cast is strong on the whole. But the real splendors of this set spring from the pit - Woldemar Nelsson (of whom I had never heard until I discovered this recording) leads the Beyreuth Festival orchestra in a burning account. They are a truly Wagnerian orchestra (it would be a shame if they weren't), and Nelsson brings out all the Master's colors. The energy of a live performance just pours out. Never have I heard the preludes and prominent sections played with such an intense timbre. It's amazing to hear.
Therefore, though this set doesn't match Kempe, Solti, or Leinsdorf overall, it is a strong alternate set that should not be ignored.

lovely.......2004-08-29
Being an opera fan, I'm often disappointed by cross-over albums. I agree with one the of the other reviews that mentions Upshaw are being more successful in this type of repertoire. But Murphy is quite lovely. It was nice to hear a few pieces I was unfamiliar with like "The French Song" and "Times Like This"... and I'm a sucker for "Come to my Garden" (even though I REALLY hated the boy soprano!). Overall, a very pleasant disc - perhaps not too deep on interpretation - but beautifully sung.
Lovely, But Bland.......2003-03-14
I've often enjoyed hearing Heidi Grant Murphy at the Metropolitan Opera House. Her crystal-clear soprano is truly beautiful, light and delicate, yet solid enough to handle Strauss and Mozart. Similar singers, most notably Dawn Upshaw, have triumphed in the musical theater repertory, so why not isn't this disc more successful? First of all, Ms. Grant isn't particularly successful as an actress. While some of the songs (most notably "I Have to Tell You") are beautifully realized, most are simply sung, with very little thought as to their meaning for the "character." In recordings a singer has to paint a larger picture, given the absence of sets, costumes, dialogue etc. Perhaps if we could see Grant's face, we'd know what she were feeling; but, of course, we can't. And as the musical director has advised Ms. Murphy to sing everything on the downbeat, the chances of her actually expressing some emotion are slim to none. Additionaly, I find the arrangements to be either unimaginative or intrusive. I will say that I absolutely love the selection of songs here. "Times Like This" is one of my favorite theater songs, as is "New Words." And what a pleasure to see an album of this sort with selections from "She Loves Me" and "Fanny," one not weighted down with the obligatory Sondheim and Lloyd Weber. All in all, this is a pleasant, lovely disc, one which I don't think you'll be sorry to have. But it doesn't compare to Upshaw's Rodgers & Hart CD, Terfel's Alan Jay Lerner disc, or Te Kanawa's Irving Berlin collection, which had the good fortune to be arranged by Jonathan Tunick.
Bright and lovely.......2003-01-31
This is a CD you don't want to miss. An addition to your special collection of all time favorites. Miss Grant Murphy has a voice that is a pure delight of pleasure; a clear and lyricly treat to the senses. Her Choice of music is different and blends well from selection to selection. Her arrangement of The French Song and (Vanilla) Ice Cream is bright and underlined with wonderful humor. Miss Grant Murphy's rendition of If I Were A Bell is just that...a bell...clear and bright.
Do your self a favor and order Times Like This. Bring an early spring into your life.
