Smooth, beautiful playing, every bit as lovely as "Winelight", which was the first album of Grover Washington's I ever heard and the one that made me fall in love with his playing.

The two aspects of jazz I enjoy most are the complex
rhythms that it tends to offer as well as the interaction
between musicians and their instruments. Unfortunately little of
that exists on this recording. Although it may work for some listenters, I find electronic drum beats and a general lack of musical accompanyment a tragedy of modern music. I know, it's the music that tends to sell these days, but if it wasn't for Grover's sax playing, there would be little if any soul or swing on this recording. Don't get me wrong, I did enjoy a few of the tracks: Village Groove, Headman's Haunt, and Mystical Force, but I need more than three tracks to induce me to queue up a cd for full listening. I fully understand that Grover has always been into funk and soul jazz, but considering the quality music he has made in the past, I'm surprised that toward the end of his career his music devolved into something one would hear in an elevator.

Another masterpiece by Grover who never failed to please. His passing in December left a huge void and his talent will be hard to replace. Anyone who fails to love this album cant be a self respecting jazz fan! Of all his cd's this is my favourite and if your anything like me it should appeal to the hopeless romantics out there. As always the tracks are instantly recognisable as Grover's and are best played on a warm summer's evening, a bottle of chilled Chardonnay in hand and preferably a little moon & stars and that someone special.

I purchased this album while I was on a cross-country driving trip in Memphis, Tn. I slipped it in the car CD player and BAM! Soulful Strut explodes into my eardrums. Grover never ceased to amaze me. Village Groove, Mystical Force, Uptown! the list goes on and on. Grover, I can't count times that you played that groove for me. True fans, if you don't have this album, go out and get it. Trust me! You will not be disappointed.. Rest in Peace Mr. Magic.....

Michael Kaeshammer is an exciting, inventive, exceptionally talented musician. This awesome CD combines old classics and new, dynamic tunes. Well-known, excellent musicians like Ben Wolfe (bass) and Kevin Breit (guitar) and the producer Peter Cardinali join Kaeshammer on this disk. If you love jazz, you should love this CD.

And, if you get a chance to see Kaeshammer's live gig in your area, you won't see a more exciting show. He came to our community recently and everyone's still raving about it.

    This cd has a timeless feel to It. It reminds me of the old tunes I grew up listening to.I hear Marvin,Curtis,Prince,George and Sly's Influnce. I just got over to the cd and haven't pulled from my player yet.Love the tune 'heaven' and I hope that this guy has a long career. BUY THIS CD! YOU WON'T BE DISSAPOINTED!

    For over a decade, Brit-rock has proclaimed its green credentials by recycling at least 50% of its material and repackaging it as if it were completely original.
    By contrast, contemporary Afro-American music's sample culture fetishises reconditioned old licks and beats, while offering much more genuine novelty.
    Joseph "Amp" Fiddler is the exception who proves the rule.
    A Detroit veteran of George Clinton's p-funk unit, his second solo album, but for a cod-ragga toast on "I Need You", could well have teleported in from the mid-1970s.
    Referencing Gil Scott-Heron in the jazz-funk meditation "Right Where You Are", August Darnell in the zoot-suited "If I Don't", Marvin Gaye in "Hustle", Sly Stone in the bone-dry click-track drums, p-funk in the rubber bass and synths, and Shuggie Otis in the spare, stoned melodiousness, Amp also boasts a fine, smoky singing voice and a way-cool pimp hat.
    If Jamiroquai could concoct a hit career out of a lot less, why not this retro rare-groover?

    Amps second album is actually stronger than his debut (great as it is) the tracks laid here are for the serious organic soul fan "Faith" is a great funky foot stomper with a dirty low B-line. "Right where you are" and the strange but superb sounding "if i don't" are all dancerfloor grooves. The awesome track titled "hustle" has a very Curtis sounding string ladened back drop, But if you like your ballads there is one here for you titled "Heaven" ft Stephanie McKay on vocals plus guitarist bluey (incognito front man) whose laced the track just wonderful throughout, and there harmonies blend just perfectly together & i feel in a short period of time it could be one of my favorite tracks on the album. Many people don't really appreciate the impact this man has had and continues to have on todays music scene, for instance Jaydee learned his trade from Amp Fiddler, this guy executes that earthy sound to damn perfection, there ain't no stand out tracks so to speak bcuz it just runs effortlessly throughout the LP, but if you like the following arists Dwele, V, Eric Roberson, peven everett, omar etc.. you will love this album, so one word to you guy's .......... purchase !!!

    I think the original cast recording - from Cleveland Ohio's Playhouse Square Association - may still be available. Look into it - If you like this recording, you might want to hear the original cast that actually created the clever vocal arrangements that made this show swing.

    The songs are all great...just take a look at the list. If you had to try to boil down this era of popular music into one short show, this shows pulls it off pretty darn well. The songs are all delightful, from well-known gems to more obscure pieces. The singers are very good too, with their harmonious voices putting new spins on some songs.

    The only weakness is that the soundtrack only features piano, bass & drum. When a theatre group presents the show, they get the music for these three instruments, plus some brass and woodwind, for a much fuller sound. I miss that on the CD. But otherwise, it's a blast!

    I did this revue in a community theatre, it is incredible. Every single song is amazing, it is romantic, hilarious, nostalgic.. born in the wrong era... This is the best cd I have ever owned. Without a doubt. If you like WWII music or anything near that period, get this. it is AMAZING!

    These are songs from the days when you could understand the lyrics. Some were silly, some deeply romantic, and some remind us how we used to cope with war and turmoil. They are very lively and the performers really catch the mood of the 30s and 40s. A 13-year-old neighbor borrowed my copy and I couldn't get it back so I had to buy another. When the group performed locally, a local newspaper critic who is a nasty curmudgeon couldn't find anything bad to say about them and even admitted to leaving the show with a smile on his face. The disc is an excellent representation of their show.

    The melodies and rhythms are strong and the trio of musicians behind the two men and two women singers give a wonderful blend of the kind of harmonies performed in the first half of this century.

      I got this album years ago, and I keep coming back for more. As your tastes evolve, different cuts speak to you in different ways. A couple of years ago, Gator Strut, the title cut, was the cool cut. This year, the Bach just does me in. Mike Marshall is a one-of-a-kind, and all his work just gets better on repeat listening.       The best Cd of New Acoustic Music. The ROUND MIDNIGHT Mike's version is great like the original of "Master" T.Monk. All songs of this Cd are full of passion with the "cream" of acoustic musicians. I love it ! I have this one on Lp from many years and now I've this one on Cd. For me, I'm a mandolinist, this Cd is a "bible" . Very very super goooood !

      I have been a fan of the Hombres for about five years. This CD was well worth the wait. I can bet that once you hear this group swing tunes like "Mutha's Helper" you will be hooked. It captures their gypsy spirit perfectly. Find out where they are playing live and run, don't walk to see them!! The Gypsy Hombres take swing and jazz music to a whole new level. "Cafe Strut" is only the beginning of what these guys can do!!

      The Gypsy Hombres have been playing in the Nashville area for the last couple of years and I have become a great fan. Their music is derivative of Django Rienhardt/Stephane Grapelli but they add fresh, orginal sounds. The tracks on this CD include arrangements of standards (Gershwin's "I've Got Rhythm"), classical (Chopin), rock (Mutha's Helper) and original songs by the Hombres. Try it, you won't be disappointed!

      Ever notice how some Grateful Dead jams sound like West African music? Over the last 35 years, countless psychedelic and neo-psych bands have emerged from places as far-flung as Japan, Scandinavia, and South America. And in the early '70s, Blo, a Nigerian trio, came up with its own take on the style. Of course, rock is essentially an African-American invention and Blo's Afro-psych is yet another example of Africans transforming a foreign musical form that, in fact, has African roots. This compilation's 13 tracks trace the band's evolution from their early rock period to their later funk and disco periods. Just about everything on the collection is filtered through a West African musical sensibility. Some of the disco-flavored material is a little weak, but interesting touches pop up everywhere. Listening to Phases allows listeners to make musical connections that may never have crossed their minds, but the album isn't a dry study in pop ethnomusicology; this disc serves up a pleasurable variety of trippy and groovy sounds. --Fred Cisterna

      Unfortunately this collection is no longer in print, but I would recommend finding a copy if you are interested in African music. Not that this is typical African music; the best way to describe this is rock/funk music with a definite African influence. Sound different? It is, but its so catchy it doesn't matter. I was lucky to get a copy of this a few years ago and I still enjoy listening to it. This group started out as a rock oriented power trio in 1972, and songs like "Preacher Man" and "Blo" are good representations of this period. Some of their early songs like "Miss Sagit" sound dated, but the majority of the music from this period of the band is funk rock with a heavy bass and is VERY catchy. This collection displays the band's evolution from a rock band to a disco band. I don't find the disco era Blo to sound any more dated than any other late seventies disco, and besides, when music that is this danceable is playing you usually are too busy dancing to think about it. The addition of a clavinet on "Scandi Boogie" and "Number One" and synthesizer on some of the later songs remind me of 70's era Stevie Wonder, but with a noticeable African imprint. The drummer explains in the liner notes that the band eventually shifted to disco under pressure from the record company and management towards the end of their career. This group definitely evolved from 1972 until their demise in 1982, and "Phases" certainly captures the changes. My hats off to the bass player, he knew how to lay it down. If you like funk music of any kind, you will like this CD. Its too bad that more of their work isn't available.

      Album Description

      It's late '60s, early '70s Rio de Janeiro where, for a few glorious years in the sun-drenched ghettos, the sun, samba & funk fused in a heady mixture of afros, black power and huge funk parties catering to up to 10,000 people. This is the story of Brazil's most forgotten movement - Black Rio. Black Rio mirrored the struggles in North America, maintaining a particularly close link to the soul brothers in Harlem. Artists like Tim Maia and Toni Tornado drew from the US soul and funk of Motown, Stax and James Brown to create their own blend of 'soul brasileiro'. Black Rio is compiled and annotated by DJ Cliffy, the man behind the successful 'Future World Funk' album series and club nights and the Brazilian club 'Batmacumba' at London's ICA. Package features extensive sleeve notes by Cliffy, rare photos, club flyers and memorabilia. Strut. 2002.

      I picked this up out of the blue just based on the recommendation of a friend who owns a record store. I really hadn't even heard of this Brazillian funk movement. Wow. That's all I can say about this album. This is Sergio Mendes meets Parliment. If you ever get a chance to pick up this album, don't pass it up! It is a completely different slice of music history for those of us who think we've heard everything.

      Certainly one of the strongest sets of Brazilian funk and soul that has been compiled to date, drawing heavily on the rarities of the so-called "Black Rio" scene that arose in the late 1960s and early '70s. Like other similar sets, this has a strong disco tinge, but it is mercifully short on the strained soul ballads by thin-voiced crooners such as Cassiano and Hyldon, opting instead for more rugged material bu the likes of Uniao Black, Copa 7 and Dom Salvador. Also included are big name artists like Banda Black Rio, Jorge Ben and Ben's one-time backup, Trio Mocoto, but also a slew of lesser known gems by Manito, Miguel de Deus, Eklipse Soul and others. This album's biggest coup is the inclusion of Antonio Carlos & Jocafi's surprise sizzler, "Kabaluere," a bass-heavy funk bomb with a strong Isley Brothers feel, recorded in 1971, by this otherwise fairly wimpy songwriting duo. Also has one track by Gerson King Combo, whose music remains mysteriously unmined by the retro crowd. This is a very strong collection; hopefull strut can come up with a follow-up volume or two of equal calibre. Recommended!
