I am 32 old years now, and I remember I hear this album for the first time when I was in high school... I can tell you I have not stopped listening 'til now. This is the best Black Metal Album so far. The atmosphere is unbelievable from the first intro and the classic anthem A FINE DAY TO DIE, then the records takes you to a journey of speed, really fantastic, a lesson on how to play fast and heavy but with endless variants, special mention to GOLDEN WALLS OF HEAVEN amd PACE TIL DEATH that will make you sweat just by listening... and the journey ends with another masterpiece of melancholic roughness with BLOOD FIRE DEATH that ends as the record begins, so by the time it ends, you start feeling addicted to speed and will push play again and again and again. The album is consistent and intense, hard to pick just one song, definitely you have to listen the journey from the beginning to the end every time you play it.

The best Bathory cd... Classics. 13 candles, Equimanthorn, Massacre, Call from the grave. Classics! Quorthon stepped it up big time on this release after the haunting "the Return". This is still the best sounding Bathory disc and it slays from start to finish. Also great cover art.. Better now than ever.. RIP quorthon..

5 out of 5 stars Split-your-head-open harsh!.......2006-08-21

I am a newcomer to Bathory. I rank 5 stars here for honestly being one of the nastiest, skull-splitting brutal, clanking loud pieces of recorded music I have ever heard. The vocals are just plain scary. The music sounds like welded steel slaughter house machinery caked in dried blood and running on top gear. This album is that freakish weird insect under the rock that you picked up playing as a kid. It startles you initially and then you want to go back and look at it carefully again and again. At a loud volume this album rattles dental work and revisits ice hockey concussions. It's like being checked on the ice without a helmet by Cromagnon Man.

(damn)

5 out of 5 stars Bathory? does it need any more reviews?.......2006-08-20

I believe that lots of people have been reviewing Bathory's works for years, and I believe that everyone who enjoys metal music knows how great and important Bathory is. So, in case you don't know it yet, or you don't like it....well too bad for you!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Old School Black Metal.......2006-04-15

This is what pure Black Metal is. This cd is is just killer and any Metal fan would really enjoy this. Ace was a true pioneer in this form of metal. Even though Venom and Celtic Frost were very influential to Black Metal Bathory was the very first 100% Black Metal Band. Come to think of it Venom and Bathory music wise have simularities but Ace was the first to use the Black Metal Vocals (aka Linda Blair Shrieks) and the guitar white noise feed back which is commonly used in Black Metal.

I own the first 3 Bathory albums but this by far my favorite and in my opinion Bathory's best.

If you are just getting into Bathory or Black Metal this album is a great starting place.

R.I.P

5 out of 5 stars Now the life you have lived have comed to light and unfold is your perversity........2005-11-30

Think of your favorite Black metal vocalist, album or band. There is a very good chance that Bathory inspired them. This was one of the first "real" Black Metal album's and so many years later, it is still one of the best. Between Quorthon's dark lyrics and throat ripping (incredible as well) vocals. That alone would make the album worth a BM fan's purchase. The drums are what you would exspect from Bathory, having ok production on them but keeping a really raw sound to them. The guitar work is also raw but a little more technical than the BM that would be released in the few years followed. The type of song range from the truly dark "Woman of Dark Desires" and "Enter the Eternal Fire" to songs which are short amounts of chaos "Chariots of Fire" and songs like "Equimanthorn" which has elements of both. All in all, this a great classic Black Metal album. It is my second favorite Bathory album behind only "Blood, Fire Death" Enjoy.

Graveland doesn't disappoint with this release and the music is delivered with focus, precision and passion. I don't recall ever hearing a weak release from them. They definitely set the standard for other Pagan or Viking metal bands. Of the current bands in this category only Enslaved can rival them. All the songs are over 7 minutes except for 'Victoria Divina' which clocks in at just under 6 minutes... The production here is fucking top notch, great battle hymns, choirs from the 'Atlantean Monumental Choir' and 'Ancient Valkyrian Choir' and it all adds to the epic atmosphere. He clearly takes this seriously and I applaud him for that. Great stuff. Polska Zawsze Biala! by LordBelketraya [Metal Archives]

3 out of 5 stars It grows on you.......2005-03-15

When I first heard this album I wanted to trade it in/throw it out! The music is so great, some of the best Bathory(Quorthon) has ever done, but man...those vocals. After I calmed down and listened to it again remembering that Bathory's vocals have never been that great anyway, I kind of liked it. There is some fine(out of tune) guitar work in there to hear, if you can get past the awful singing. If you are just getting into Bathory don't buy this one! get one of the older ones man! "The Return" is my personal favorite. If you want to hear "Viking metal" buy an Unleashed album, if you want to hear "Epic Bathory", buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Killer Viking metal! Twilight of the Gods!.......2003-11-07

Damn this is one awesome metal album! This is a one man album, that being the mighty Quorthon who plays guitar bass and sings. The drums on this album are a drum machine but it sounds excellent. Quorthon's clean vocals sound nice and refreshing rather than the screeches of earlier Bathory, but all Bathory is good. There's a nice classical influence that compliments this album. Each song is at least 7 minutes long, which is a good thing. Of all the Bathory albums I think this one has the best production and sound quality. It's a wonderful metal album that everyone should own. I don't know what is wrong with that John Holton punk(he must be g@Y), he says the album is dissapointing, he must be a lame slipknot fan...anyway this album is a masterpiece, I think it's one of the better Bathory albums in their catalog, I recommend this to anyone who likes real metal. Peace!

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-09-17

A fairly poor album. Quorthon's guitar is noticeably (and painfully) out of tune in several acoustic passages, and his attempts at clean vocals (as opposed to the harsh guttural vocals of earlier albums) are almost laughable; he is almost unable to carry a tune. The songs are rather monotonous musically, though the lyrics are interesting. The last track (with music from Gustav Holst's "The Planets") is not a very good blending of metal and classical (if you like that mix, listen to Therion). Overall, this was a disappointment after being introduced to Bathory with "Under the Sign of the Black Mark".

    5 out of 5 stars Enchanting.......2001-08-12

Twilight of the Gods was my first Bathory cd after hearing so much about them. I like sorts of black metal offshoots. This is Viking metal. There is also some Nietzsche thrown in- a quote and the title track, Twilight of the Gods, which I think is the high point. There is a classical influence. This is very heavy and slower with clean vocals and chanting. This is the last of the Asatru trilogy by Bathory. Truely, an enchanting album is Twilight of the Gods.

5 out of 5 stars JUST ESSENTIAL ATMOSPHERIC MUSIC!!!.......2001-01-14

This is a essential atmospheric epic-progressive metal, with Quorthon's sung vocals (not screamed), with beautiful melodies and good lyrics. This late Bathroy's work (1991), together with "Blood on Ice", are the last good stuff of this swedish group. I think Quorthon has done himself everything at this album, but I am not sure, as my version just shows the lyrics and not so much about the credits... Don't expect to hear trendy black metal of the 90's here... Quorthon does what he wants and "Twilight..." is very well done... Just light a bit of incenses and get into this trip... It's very nice!!!

5 out of 5 stars Most brutal one-man band on the planet.......2006-03-25

By far the most brutal metal band of the mid 1980s, Bathory set the pace for countless black and death metal bands to follow. 'The Return' has meaner riffs and an overall darker sound than the debut album released just a year earlier.

    3 out of 5 stars CMON.......2006-03-03

Hey, i loved Bathory as much as the next guy. And this album was kind of an enigma at the time. quorthon was very inspiring to newer bands and he was an innovator. But to keep giving this poorly produced, very basic cd 5 stars is ludicris! I think Quorthon himself would laugh at seeing these reviews. This album only cost like $2500 to make, and you still cant tell that it even cost that much! Some of the songs even have mistakes in them, and the drumming misses beats at times. The whole dark aspect to this cd is great and gives great ambiance, But musically, vocally and lyrically its very basic. Even sounds worse than those old venom albums that sounded like trash. It also has a terrible mix job. Influential? Yes! 5 stars? Absolutely not.

5 out of 5 stars Sex, Satan, Metal, Sin, Death!.......2004-10-01

The harvest moon glows eerily in the darkened sky, Lucifer's gaze through the misty night upon the black earth, emminates a haunting and comforting rapport amidst the cold autumnal nocturne. Dancing shadows upon the walls depicting images of balefire ceremonies, growing into grotesque apparitions fortelling impending doom...

REVELATION OF DOOM veritably sounds like a microsphone lowered down into the depths of The Abyss, and besides makes for an appropriate infernal meditation, to place one "in the mood", as it were, establishing that nefarious atmosphere which betokens the presence of diabolical projection. TOTAL DESTRUCTION is an apocalyptic tale of omni-annihilation to bring forth a renewal of stronger and more evolved elements. THE WIND OF MAYHEM comes forth from The West, filling one with Strength and Passion - it whispers your name... BESTIAL LUST lets loose the Satanimal Beast in a Satantric frenzy. POSSESSED invokes the demon within to surface; THE RITE OF DARKNESS invites you to participate, holding a black candle at a point in The Pentagram, and thus usher forth the denizens of the void to reclaim the earth and its inhabitanats. REAP OF EVIL contains marvellous poetry of the classic darkened fane; SON OF THE DAMNED, infernal progeny, thus prepares to ascend the earthly throne. SADIST manifests the cruel master ready to grant pain and pleasure...; THE RETURN OF DARKNESS AND EVIL concludes where Revelation of Doom began, with a veritable doomsday prophet inunciating the terrible fate of the human race.

This album radiates the impression of those arcane phrases haunting in the air, the echoing vocals, the eerie quality brings pleasure to My ears - at once mesmerizing, and inspiring towards feral expressions from the darkest recesses of the imagination. This album is one of the original "Satanic epic" creations, along with Venom's "At War With Satan" opus, which set the anti-xian mythology to optimum psychodramatic proportions. Each and every song is a masterpiece of Black Metal composition, like opening up an olde musty book from some dusty cobwebbed shelf, only to unleash the horrors within. Wave after wave of sonic bliss. In My opinion, it is only a small bit 'better' than the first, only in that the sound quality is improved, for the first was recorded using a small Yamaha amp due to monetary limitations, so The Return really delivers Quorthon's potential in veritos. 'It is said that The Return was recorded in a church to capture that certain reverating embience. The Return...' is itself a portal to the Underworld - the Abyss of the Psyche - so as the CD case is opened, so are The Gates of Hell...

    Track List:

"The REVELATION OF DOOM comes forth from Hell, fortelling of TOTAL DESTRUCTION upon those who were BORN FOR BURNING as THE WIND OF MAYHEM blows to revitalize the Legions of Darkness and infuse with BESTIAL LUST, that they may be POSSESSED and serve as The Gates of The Abyss to unleash The Ancient Ones through THE RITE OF DARKNESS, that we may REAP OF EVIL, the carnal delights and spoils of War, as we are the embodiment of the SON OF THE DAMNED and the SADIST, as we welcome THE RETURN OF DARKNESS AND EVIL upon the world forever more..."

    5 out of 5 stars The fountainhead.......2004-06-14

Along with Celtic Frost and to a lesser extent Venom (more for style than musical substance), Bathory is the band that wrote the blueprint for all subsequent black metal. Its all here: the growling vocals, heavily Satanic lyrics, distorted wash of guitar, the pounding drums both slow and fast, if not blast beat fast and it was released in 1985. The production isn't great, so what. The Return rocks. If you like black metal towards the more primal side of things: Darkthrone, Burzum pre Filosofem, older Immortal you'll like this. Bathory are the spring from which flows all modern black metal, true innovators.

5 out of 5 stars The First True Black Metal Album! And One of the Best!.......2004-05-02

Despite the fact that Venom invented the name of the genre with their Black Metal realease, everyone knows they were not TRUE BM, as what they did was done tongue-in-cheek, and mainly for shock effect. Bathory, of course, is quite different. No doubt influenced by the Satanic themes of Venom, indeed the name Bathory comes from a Venom song title-Countess Bathory- Quarthon took things a step farther. What becomes clear in listening to both the first album, Bathory, and especially The Return is: the level of commitment to BM ethos and ideology that is really absent in Venom, overall. This goes way beyond simple snarling vocalizations of allegiance to Satan, which is actually not present with Bathory, and into the black realm of chaos and nihilism. This is clearly evidenced by the song titles, such as Total Destruction, The Wind of Mayhem, The Rite of Darkness, and The Return of Darkness and Evil. Make no mistake: Any issue as to whether or not Quorthon was actually a practising Satanist, and I seriously doubt that he was, is beside the point. What he has done on The Return is the REAL DEAL. It is the true epitome of black metal: evoking the enveloping prescense of evil and darkness in the form of musical hymms to all that is black and destructive. And that is exactly what this album does. It is the first UTTERLY BLACK metal album , and one of the best. All that you could ask for is here: grinding guitars, bashing percussion, torn-throat vocals, lryical invocations of darkness, death, and destruction, etc. This is a foundational album that especially influenced the Norwegian bands that would follow, and is an absolute classic of black death thrash. Also, this album is the perfect music for aligning your soul with the dark, cthonic powers-that-be, and for works of hexing, entropy, and necromancy...

This might be the best metal album I've ever heard. Only drawback, if this is one, happens to be that the theme is centered around Viking and Norse mythos. The music pummels and the lyrics are clever. If you are a fan of metal music then buy this one immediately. It is one of the most potent metal compilations I've ever heard, perhaps even better than Metallica's "Master of Puppets." I realize that is saying a lot, but "Hammerheart" is so powerful I thought the comparison had merit.

    5 out of 5 stars Blasting Metal.......2001-06-09

This is the second effort from these guys, and they really are into therir music, ripping vocals, crushing drums, blasting guitars, although Bathory has morphed though the time, (example Quorthorn solo effort Octagon) they are one of the best bands in their genre. Music not for the weak, if Black metal is your taste, you've better go and get it NOW!!

    5 out of 5 stars Bathory compilation.......2000-10-15

Bathory is a one of a kind band. Getting their name from the Blood Countess Erzebet Batory (her uncle was once King of Poland, Stephan Batory..Batory the old spelling, we now spell it Bathory), Quorthon and crew can do metal any way they want. And the Jubileum trilogy proves it. Get the album, ANY album, from Bathory. Though for beginners I recommend any of the 3 Jubileums, that way you get a taste of the Bathory way of music!! I have seen the Goat, and It is my Sign. Hail Bathory! Sho

4 out of 5 stars inconsistent, but one of the true innovators of metal.......1999-12-30

Third volume of a three-volume retrospective of this seminal Swedish death metal band. Actually, it's a band in name only, singer/guitarist Quorthon being the only constant, while other members are pretty much just hired guns. Since 1983, Quorthon has been churning out original, experimental, and often unlistenable variations on death and black metal. Bathory is considered one of the originators of both those genres, most of the extreme Swedish and Norwegian black and death bands of the early 90s claiming Bathory as prime influence. Bathory's early material is pure thrash, fast and trebly, riffs sounding like a vacuum cleaner, blastbeats totally out of control. Over this raging din, Quorthon screeched out unintelligible odes to Satan, making him, along with Venom, Mercyful Fate and Slayer, one of the earliest groups to really embrace Satanic imagery (much of which sounds goofy today). Gradually, Bathory embraced more intricate riffs and the lyrics moved from Satan to Norse mythology (again, Bathory blazing the way for future Scandinavian metal bands). By the early 90s, the music had slowed down to a medieval/doom, nearly mellow sound recalling Manowar. All the while, the production job was always pretty loose, with fuzzy guitar and bass and drums that were either inaudible or too boomy. This compilation haphazardly covers all of it. More than anything else, Bathory gets credit for originality, true weirdness and a complete disdain for mainstream sounds.

    4 out of 5 stars This one's for thrashers.......2003-03-15

Now before you go off on me and saying how i dont know anything about Bathory consider the fact that Bathory has something to offer to fans of nearly all genre's of metal and personally, I love nearly all their albums.I've heard people remark that this album is "...not worth bathory worship", meaning tributes or cover songs, but thats just bs and those people know nothing about thrash. This album is a full on thrashing deathfest, with that old metal attitude that we all love. The riffs are very catchy and it all works because the music is not watered down at all. My only complaint is that i would like to see more lead guitar. Otherwise if youre into thrash or even death metal along the lines of Vader and Vomitory this album is a great buy.

    3 out of 5 stars it's so-so.......2001-03-18

well, here is a completally different bathory album. the 3 first bathory albuns are BLACK METAL, and all the others are viking metal. but this one is DEATH METAL. for sure, the heaviest one. there are some very good songs, but if you listen to it for a so long time you might get annoyed. some songs are equal. but some are VERY good, like the title song , REQUIEM.
