Way back in 1991, many of us saw the single-handed salvation and revival of the old-fashioned American-style Broadway musical comedy. True, it was in the form of a feature-length Disney cartoon, but Beauty and the Beast had it all: a wonderful, tuneful score (including a huge hit title-song), off-the-wall choreography, a great opposites-attract love story with an ultimately happy ending, comic subplots, colorful period costumes, a romantic location in small-town France, and an irresistible cast, including Angela Lansbury as the voice of a teapot. Alan Menken's songs, with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Tim Rice, literally introduced the characters ("Belle" and "Gaston") and carried them gracefully through the old fairy tale with its new animated twists. Disney understandably decided to transpose this cinematic miracle to the Broadway stage in 1992. Beauty and the Beast at the fabled Palace Theatre has done as much as anything to revive New York's theatre district; it led to a similar animated film-to-stage transfer of The Lion King, which allowed for the magnificent restoration of the 1902 New Amsterdam Theatre, which was the cornerstone of the cleanup of 42nd Street, which in turn transformed Times Square and "Broadway" into the world's number-one tourist destination. And we're all terribly grateful. But, on stage, Beauty and the Beast was flat, and most of that lack of fizz is, alas, captured on compact disc. The good songs are all here, such as "Be Our Guest," but the performances of them are mostly perfunctory--the exception being the vocal renderings of Susan Egan as Belle, the Beauty. Further, the Disneyfication of the Broadway musical seems to extend to faceless and interchangeable (read: cheap to hire) players, a practice that extends to The Lion King. The only "names" in the original Beauty and the Beast cast were Beth Howland as the teapot and Tom Bosley, a mere shadow of his former Fiorello, as Belle's father. Even worse, unlike The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast was not reinvented for the stage. It's my theory that the kids who made up the live audience (and many of their parents) were filling in the blanks from repeated viewings of the cartoon on video. If you're willing to do the same when only listening, this CD might do. But why, when the movie soundtrack album is available? --Robert Windeler
Customer Reviews:
Great CD.......2007-07-16
I bought this for my wife and daughter before they went to see the play on broadway. They really enjoyed listening to the music before seeing the play. Great for all ages.
Music from my all-time favorite Disney movie, plus some!.......2007-06-28
This show was the first broadway show I ever saw. Of course it was a good choice for me, because the source material is my favorite Disney movie, and one of my top ten favorite movies, period.
All the original music from the movie is here, and (somewhat surprisingly) all the songs they added for broadway fit in seamlessly and really add to character development. The new songs are:
"Me" - this is one of my favorite additions, it's a semi-proposal from Gaston to Belle and the lyrics are very funny. Makes me laugh every time I hear it.
"Home" - A song Belle sings when she first comes to the Beast's castle, it shows her determination in the face of despair. Beautiful vocals by Susan Egan, who makes a great Belle. She also plays Megara in "Hercules"
"If I Can't Love Her" - A song for the Beast that helps to make him a sympathetic character earlier in the show. It is a good song and fulfills its purpose, but I am not a big fan of the actor who plays the Beast
"Mason de Lunes" - Another song for Gaston as he lays down his plan to lock Belle's father in the insane asylum. Not as funny as "Me" but still great.
Out of all the new and old songs, however, my favorite music on the cd is the instrumental "Transformation" I could listen to that every day.
Original Bway Cast Recording is not what the show ended up being.......2007-06-22
If you are looking for an accurate recording of the Broadway show (that is available for rental through MTI), you should get the London or Australian Cast Recording of the show. The OBCR was recorded BEFORE the Broadway run even started rehearsals, so it does not reflect many, many lyric changes, music changes, and dance arrangements that happened between the show's Houston tryout and Broadway opening. Granted, there are waonderful performances on this CD, but if you want to know what the show ended up being for nealry all of its thirteen-plus-year run, get London.
i am pretty upset!.......2007-06-09
ok, so i love beauty and the beast and broadway, but this cd makes me mad. it doesn't have the song "A Change in Me" that is from the broadway musical. and for the song "Home," it doesn't have the lyrics from the show, it has the alternate lyrics that are meant to be used when you sing the song anywhere but the show. the lyrics that are written in the book that came with the cd are the musical lyrics, but she doens't sing them. it is an ok cd, but if you can find a better one, please get that one and don't make the same mistake i did!
Wonderful score.......2007-05-09
After seeing a high-school production of Beauty & the Beast I felt the need to buy the soundtrack. It is wonderful-made me want to go see it on Broadway.

Romance.......2007-06-10
I remember this show from the eighties, and have waited for it to show up on DVD. Strictly chick stuff...but oh, how I love it. Thank you!
Luscious.......2007-06-08
For devotees of Beauty And The Beast, and sheer romantics, this is just nirvana. Music that tears at the heart-strings, and beautiful poetry in the dulcet tones of Ron Perlman. Buy it!!
Beautiful Touching music, poetry.......2007-04-19
When I first discovered this CD was for sale, I cried. When I first listened to it-not having any idea what they'd put on here from the show, the most beautiful music started up and then "Vincent" started reading the poetry that he read to Catherine and that made me fall in love with his character -eventually, well, the tears just quietly flowed from my eyes, surprised me! I wasnt aware of crying till the tears flowed from the pure beauty of the sounds from this CD. All these years later, I still treasure and love this CD above all my others, it gives you a sense of peace too and the poems bring understanding of true love. I highly recommend it!! (dont let the flowery sentimental review deter you-I really believe most who love beautiful music will love this).
About....time.......2007-04-11
I mean, seriously....I had to buy the cassette on eBay. Thank Bob they finally rereleased it and on CD. I bought for myself, and friends, they made EXCELLENT and appreciated gifts.
Extraordinary music and poetry.......2007-04-10
Vincent's voice melts your heart....the music is beautiful, the poetry selections outstanding. Together it is a must have for any lover of the Beauty and the Beast series or just a lover of outstanding music. This man's voice is extraordinary, and I can listen again and again and never get tired of it. Endulge yourself....turn off the lights, curl up on the couch and listen.

Throughout the 1980s, a damning generalization held true: British metal was essentially working man's food, loosely descended from biker-meets and Northern pubs; whereas, in the States, it was an outgrowth of stadium rock, which traditionally subordinated substance to spectacle. Plug-ugly and cartoonishly morbid, Iron Maiden were typical of the Brit effort, since they effectively emphasized a driving, no-nonsense approach to the music. Among metal aficionados, this album ranks as one of the defining moments of the entire genre. Of the nine songs here--including Maiden classics like "Run to the Hills" and the title track--only "Gangland" falls flat, though it's immediately overshadowed by "Hallowed Be Thy Name," acknowledged by many as this band's apotheosis. --Andrew McGuire
Customer Reviews:
Knocks my socks off.......2007-07-07
This was Iron Maiden's first album without singer Paul Di'anno. Bruce Dickenson joined up in 1981. First off I want to say that Steve Harris's bass playing is enough of a reason to buy this album. Metal is known for bass players riding the root notes and the guitar players ripping it up, but Iron Maiden works amazingly together. Bruce Dickenson's vocal deliveries are always powerful. "The Number Of The Beast" is really cool because it is an idea of what things could be like if the rapture described in the Bible actually happened. "Run To The Hills" is a great song about the plight of native americans. "The Prisoner" goes into the head of a prisoner's thinking, painting out the fear and concerns involving that life. Iron Maiden's music is smart and clever, discussing dark themes, flying over the christian right's understanding. This is an album that I finally discovered far too late in life. Buy this album and listen to it crush indie rock.
Iron Maiden stand at their best.......2007-06-10
Tied with Powerslave, i'd say this is their best album. For one thing, it has 3 songs which are still famous today. Second, there is a great range of songs on here.
1. Invaders: Fast paced, and loud. 9/10
2. Children of the Damned: Slower, but speeds up to be one of the best songs ever. 10/10
3. The Prisoner: The worst song, but still good. 7.5/10
4. 22 Acacia avenue: Tells a similar story to "Charlotte the Harlot" on Iron Maiden. Steady, and fierce at times. 10/10
5. Number of the Beast: My favourite song ever. Good lyrics, and a classic which will hopefully stay famous for 100 years (at least). 12/10
6. Run to the hills: Faster than Number of the Beast, and the only song i managed to get my friend into. 11.5/10
7. Gangland: Not a great favourite, but i like the chorus and intro. 8/10
8. Total Eclipse: Didn't really manage to get into this, but i still enjoy it whenever i hear it. 8/10
9. Hallowed be thy Name: A soft start, which builds up into a very fast paced song. 10/10
A METAL EPIC OF INFINATE PROPORTIONS. "NUMBER OF THE BEAST" IS DEFINENTLY A HEAVY METAL BLUEPRINT FOR FUTURE METAL BANDS...............2007-05-25
A metal epic you say!!! That is totally an understatement. Bruce Dickinson joined the Maiden crew in November 1981, and held nothing back with his debut on "Number Of The Beast". Bruces voice is ear shattering and exploding with rythmic energy. "Number Of The Beast" captures Maiden at an awe inspiring creative peak. Yeah I know "Run To The Hills" is the popular song that everybody likes and skips the other 8 tracks on the cd to listen to. "Run To The Hills" pales in comparison to most of the other tracks on the cd. "Invaders", "Children Of The Damned" "Gangland" "Hallowed Be Thy Name" just to name a few. From "Invaders" to "Hallowed Be Thy Name", "Number Of The Beast" is a riveting listen that speaks volumes of pure metal genius. "Number Of The Beast" would start Maidens incredible streak of recording greatness throughout the remainder of the big 1980s, Piece of Mind,Powerslave,Somewhere in Time,Seventh Son of a Seventh Son into the 1990s. The one thing I will give Iron Maiden is that they did'nt sell out and make more commercially favorite music to appeal and sell more cds to the public. Unlike Metallica who compared favorably to Maiden through 1983-1988 with great hard crunchy metal music with the likes of "Kill 'Em All1983" "Ride the Lightning1984", "Master of Puppets1986", got more commercial and softer sounding with their music. Maiden today is still pumping out hard crunching metal music and are no sell outs. "Number Of The Beast" is essential to any heavy metal or hard rock library, as it gets better with age, the Beast ages like fine wine. If you are not a of fan of Iron Maiden, I assure you, you need to own this cd. The packaging is really awesome with a fine mini booklet of literature about the Maiden and the remastering is incredible. Enough already laddy!!..................UP THE IRONS MATEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The album that put Maiden on the map.......2007-05-20
Following the release of their second album, Killers, Iron Maiden found themselves in need of a new lead vocalist. They recruited Bruce Dickinson, formerly of the band Samson and in 1982 released The Number Of The Beast, considered by many to be a landmark metal recording.
One thing you can't help but notice listening to this album is the level of musicmanship employed. Guitarists Dave Murray and Adrian Smith had truly cemented their working relationship by this time, and the harmonized leads, counter-rhythms, and solo trade-offs that are now an Iron Maiden stock-in-trade are firmly in place here. Steve Harris ably proves himself one of the best bass players in the business, playing basslines that manage to be highly melodic while maintaining the bassists primary role of cementing the rhythm section. Speaking of the rhythm section, drummer Clive Burr outdoes himself here in a career-defining performance. Sadly this would be his last album with the Beast. Then there's Bruce Dickinson. Finally Iron Maiden was able to find a singer with range, power and flexibility to take their music to the next level. Dickinson certainly does that here, showing no signs of nervousness or discomfort in his new position as he delivers an incredible vocal performance. The album was produced by Martin Birch, who delivered his usual terrific work and managed to record an album that sounds heavy but with good balance and ambience. Unfortunately these remasters are HORRIBLE. Jack up the levels, add lots of compression, and over-boost the bass. Dreadful. Try to find the original CD issues instead.
On the first two Iron Maiden albums bassist Steve Harris did almost all of the songwriting by himself. He still did a great deal here, and having a new "instrument" to play with in Bruce Dickinson inspired him to greater heights, writing in a more melodic fashion for a voice with a lot more range than had been available before. His efforts were also very nicely augmented by guitarist Adrian Smith, who had played on the previous album but hadn't done any writing at that point. Dickinson apparently did a lot of writing as well, but wasn't able to get songwriting credit because of a previous contract. The legendary Maiden songwriting team, in place for the first time, brought the band up a level. This record is jam-packed with killer songs like "Children Of The Damned" (starts out slow and then kicks you in the gut), "The Prisoner" (hard rocker with a great bassline and an insistent chorus), and "The Number Of The Beast" (the one that scared your parents!). It also includes the epic "Hallowed Be Thy Name", which stands to this day as one of Maiden's top five songs ever (many still think it's their best). Anybody who's familiar with my reviews knows that I grade albums mostly based on the songwriting, and this album loses a star for the disposable "Gangland", the fluffy-sounding "Run To The Hills", and "Invaders", which starts out promising but is ruined by a retarded chorus. The rest of the songs are so incredible, however, that they still earn this album four stars.
Many still consider this to be Maiden's best work, but I really can't agree. Maiden would later release albums that were great from start to finish. This album has some killer songs, but it also does have a few weak points. I see it as sort of transitional; a step up from the band's previous efforts and a springboard for what was to come. It's still a great, classic album and no rock record collection is complete without it.
Incredible piece of metal history........2007-05-16
Alright people, here's the deal. I know everyone gets this album because of, "Run to the hills". I know some people who will skip every song on the album and only listen to run to the hills. But, here's the truth, "Run to the hills" really isn't that great of a song, in my opinion. I can play about every song on this album, besides "Total eclipse", on the guitar. I like complicated guitar work that requires more than a few power chords. That's what "Run to the hills" is. The song is about 5 or 6 power chords arranged differently, besides the solo section and intro. I mean, to me it sounds a little boring. The best, and most overlooked song on this album is the amazing, "HALLOWED BE THY NAME"! I mean, talk about great guitars. That song took me forever to learn on the guitar. The intro alone took me like three weeks. Now, that's a song for you. Other highlights of this album are, "INVADERS", "CHILDREN OF THE DAMNED", "22 ACACIA AVENUE", "NUMBER OF THE BEAST", and "GANGLAND". Get this album for those songs.

Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.
Disney songs are the best.......2006-03-18
I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.
Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21
I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!
Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11
This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

Not bad--A so-so way to get your wallet six dollars lighter.......2007-06-09
As many have already said, Ronnie James Dio was arguably one of the most definitive and powerful vocal and lyrical masters of the 80's and early 90's metal era.
This CD brings back fond memories of a great time to be a mid teen, with your hair growing out, your torn, faded Sabbath shirt, chasing girls, and spending every waking moment partying with your Devil Horns in the air.
Other's have said that this CD is a drop in the bucket compared to Dio's extensive pantheon of classics-- I certainly agree. (SEE Rainbow or Black Sabbath or Elf.)
So like I said, for the money, this is'nt a bad purchase at all. If you got six bucks burning a hole in your pocket, buy it, but keep in mind there's so much more Dio out there. Somewhere between the Black and the Rainbow you'll find a little Elf and a King of Rock n Roll.
Mandatory for any fan of classic metal.......2007-05-13
If you haven't read the other reviews already, this disc is a compilation of all of DIO's (the band) greatest hits from their first album Holy Diver (1983) to their sixth Strange Highways (1994). Although it was released after Angry Machines and Magica, no songs are included from those albums because the tracklist of this compilation was selected by Rhino Records, not Dio. Since Rhino has not been affiliated with the release of any Dio's solo albums since Strange Highways it is not surprising that they chose only songs from those earlier albums.
Anyways, this is a great introduction to Dio's music. There isn't a single song on here that doesn't deserve it. Even though many deserving songs did not make it, that really says more about how good Dio's music is than the selection of tracks. The only change I would have made is to replace the quite long "Lock Up The Wolves" with the more upbeat and popular "Wild One," which would have allowed for the inclusion of one more song (e.g., "Like the Beat of a Heart," "Jesus, Mary and the Holy Ghost," "Night People," and so on).
One word of warning though. This was the first Dio cd I bought, but after being exposed to the greatness of their music I eventually bought all of their cds as well as the Sabbath Dio albums. You may find yourself doing the same.
Dio is not done.......2007-05-01
this looks like an awesome cd but i have all the cds these songs came from. go buy Dio's album Killing the Dragon. it is fresh music with the good old Dio sound. I promise you won't be disappointed. or buy both and have lots of great Dio music. keep rockin.
good collection , but it is not the ultimate collection .......2007-03-20
very good , and powerfull songs, excellent
Still not the very best of.......2007-03-18
I believe the reason for the name says everything, its not the best of DIO, only the beast... If you want to create the very best of DIO, it should include also musics like: "Don't Talk To Strangers", "Breathless", "I Speed At Night", "One Night in the City", his classics Black Sabbath or Rainbow stuff (Mistreated and Sixteenth Century Greensleeves from "On Stage).
But you cannot ask for everything, as it doesn't exists, this should be called "A Summary of The Very Beast". Still a must buy... I have all his albums, but in the old style LPs format.

Henley--arguably the most talented member of the Eagles--had toyed with playful pop hooks on his I Can't Stand Still solo bow in 1982. Two years later he got down to business on this brainy, politics-themed sophomore disc, which indicted his native Hollywood as venomously as "Hotel California" once did. Surfaces were still somewhat glossy--there's no denying the foot-tapping elan of "Boys of Summer or "All She Wants to Do Is Dance." But the vitriol roiling just beneath those surfaces was deep, intellectual stuff. Henley, as he continued to prove with the more eloquent The End of the Innocence a few years later, is someone his fans can neither underestimate nor predict. Can we say the same of Glenn Frey or Randy Meisner? --Tom Lanham
Customer Reviews:
Don Henley - Not His Best But A Good One.......2007-05-09
Henley seems to take a lot of flack from people with similar musical tastes as my own, but I have always thought he was a great songwriter. Yes his music is fairly pedestrian, and he appears to be an average drummer, but I think his lyrics are often extremely clever and he has always been a great singer. Up until the early 80's Henley was best known for being the drummer, singer, and songwriter for The Eagles. After The Eagles broke up in 1981 Henley went solo and had a very successful run of radio hits and platinum albums. "Beast" is his second solo record and although I think his next one was better this one was still solid. Several huge hits came from this album including "Boys Of Summer", "All She Wants To Do Is Dance" two songs that though massively overplayed were pure pop gems. Other highlights include the country tinged "You're Not Drinking Enough". The title track "Building The Perfect Beast" is full of patented Henley social commentary. My favorite song on the album, "A Month Of Sundays" is a song about a farmer loosing his livelihood in the Regan era 80's. This is the kind of track that Henley does best and it really works here. "Sunset Grill" is another great song and serves as a kind of sequel to "The Sad Café" from The Eagles "Long Run" album. Henley gets plenty of help on this album from well known musicians including most of Tom Petty's band, Lindsay Buckingham, Charlie Sexton and others. This is not Henley's best album, but it has quite a few really good songs on it.
Not favourite but its OK........2007-03-08
I bought it because I love "Boys of the summer". Thats all. Others songs are good but to be honest it is not kind of music that I like. So if You like rock, whatever it means, you are gonna enjoy it.

ACTUAL MILES, AND BUILDING THE PERFECT BEAST cd's ARE WITHOUT A DOUBT TRUTH WHICH SET YOU FREE, AS 'ALL SHE WANT'S TO DO IN DANCE' IS A DAVID BOWIE MUST COVER SONG. BLUE JEANS AREN'T MADE FOR WOMEN WHO REFUSE TO REMAIN FEMINE. LET'S NOT FORGET WHOM OUR FOCUS AND SPIRITUAL SONG'S ALL COMES FROM, AS IN OBEDIENCE TO "THE GARDEN OF ALLAH." NEVER FORGET YOUR 'FUNKETELECHY' AS DELIVERED BY GEORGE CLINTON AND DON HENLEY, FOR SOME ARE ANGELS UNAWARE.
A perfect album!.......2005-07-19
The Eagles' drummer Don Henley released his second solo album, this one,in late 1984 after signing with Geffen Records. His solo debut,I CAN'T STAND STILL was released in 1982 on Asylum, the same label that the Eagles recorded on. Henley's fellow Eagle Glenn Frey was enjoying success as a solo artist as well. Eagles fans enjoyed Henley taking the lead on some of their hits like HOTEL CALIFORNIA,LIFE IN THE FAST LANE,THE LONG RUN,BEST OF MY LOVE and ONE OF THESE NIGHTS. On this hit album are the hits THE BOYS OF SUMMER,ALL SHE WANTS TO DO IS DANCE and SUNSET GRILL(Cher covered the latter). I also heard a cover of TBOS,but I don't remember the artist who covered it. Henley's next album,THE END OF THE INNOCENCE,released in 1989,was a much bigger hit.
One Of Don Henley's Two Best Solo Albums.......2005-05-19
BUILDING THE PERFECT BEAST is one of Don Henley's two best solo albums. "The Boys Of Summer" is about trying to hold onto the past, all along knowing things will never be the same, a philosophy that led me to put looking good for my favorite actresses as a higher priority than going back to my old school's Thanksgiving Dinner and Graduation. Other great tracks include the political protest rock of "All She Wants To Do Is Dance", the anti-inertia ballad "A Month Of Sundays", and "Sunset Grill", a hymn to a burger place whose hamburgers won't make you sick. Overall, BUILDING THE PERFECT BEAST is an essential album for anyone who cares about the future of our world. Henley's belief that the young Australian tourist convicted in Indonesia on drug-smuggling charges is innocent makes this an essential purchase for both your ears AND your conscience.

Customer Reviews:
Just for kids?? No way!!.......2005-04-08
This is wonderful classical music. If the kids like it, great! But, make no mistake about it, this is good for anyone. This is wonderful study music, reading music, or just plain relaxing music. Highlights include "Parade of the Wooden Soldiers"; "March of the Toys" (from BABES IN TOYLAND -- the reason I bought this CD); "The Sorcerer's Apprentice"; "The Little Train of Caipira" (no longer little when the music is over); and the audience favorite "Hoedown" (i.e. "Beef, it's what's for dinner!").
If you're into that whole thing of classical music sharpening a youngster's intellect, then this won't disappoint. If you're just into good old fashioned classical music in general, it won't disappoint you either. Also, I highly recommend to both groups the classical CD BUILD YOUR BABY'S BRAIN.
The best classical album for kids!.......2002-12-12
This is a wonderful album. Very high quality, and every selection is beautiful. My daughter (who usually asks me to turn my classical music off) loves to pretend to gallop like a horse during "Rodeo" and march like a soldier during "Parade of the wooden soldiers". This is a pleasure for the whole family!
Great for Preschool Children.......2000-10-12
I use this CD with my preschool music group. The kids love it! This CD enables children learn about classical music without over extending their attention spans.

A Rock And Roll Classic.......2007-04-13
this is what early 80s rock and roll sounded like!
If you lived in 1981 there is no way that you didn't hear of April Wine and this is the album that put them on the map!
The big hits were 'Sign Of The Gypsy Queen' and the beautiful ballad 'Just Between You And Me' but the whole album is very good
the songs and production sound a little bit dated now (especially the cheesy keyboards in 'caught in the crossfire') but you know what, that is what makes this charming! I love listening to this and remembering my childhood.
the vocals are actually quite good, the songwriting is catchy (the songs WILL get stuck in your head, trust me) and the guitar solos are pretty darn good!
some of the lyrics are a little cheesy (like big city girls)
but the whole CD is very worthy of having in your collection
for pure rock and roll this is a perfect example to play for people
the upside - sign of the gypsy queen, just between you and me,crash and burn, and caught in the crossfire
the downside - really can't think of any...for the time period this was just about perfect
the bottom line - especially at this price, you should buy this piece of the early 80s...no collection is complete without April Wine 'The Nature Of The Beast' donutman says so!!!
Ah,man....this is one EVERBODY had in 1981!.......2007-04-01
This is simple. The band absolutely rocked live and wrote great guitar driven songs. Back in the day,if you got lucky while on the hunt for girls and actually talked one into taking a ride with you in your car, this one, and Harder...Faster, would be one of the first asked for to listen to. At the price Amazon has this for, it's a give away.
APRIL WINE NATURE OF THE BEAST CD, NEW........2007-03-18
GREAT PRICE AND FAST SHIP ON THIS NEW CD! A+++! I LOVE AMAZON! MY FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP! NEVER DISAPPOINTED!
Classic from the 80's.......2006-11-05
The Nature of the Beast is an excellent album. I bought it when it originally came out back in the 80's. The two well-known numbers "Sign of the Gypsy Queen", a great song about "movin on", and the ballad "Just Between You and Me" are of course the gems. But "All Over Town" has a great riff and there's a comical break in the tune where Myles Goodwin has a very sophisticated mimic saying "I don't care." The collection itself has a lot of great guitar riffs and there's just some good rock n roll over all in songs like "Future Tense" and "Wanna Rock". The only bummer is probably "Tellin Me Lies" but it's catchy. April Wine was unforutnately an act that never really got the respect it deserved. If you like straight rock, with a flair of 80's, then this is a good buy.
Sign Of The Gypsy Queen.......2006-09-26
April Wine was a very underrated band and this album falls right into that category. It's true that they really didn't do anything after this one, but this one was great. Very catchy and interesting lyrics all the way through. Classic Rock fans can't go wrong with this one.

Customer Reviews:
Surprized Me.......2007-03-15
The core songs of this album are quite good. I didn't have very high expectations for a Tull album from this period (I don't care for "Songs from the Wood") but as soon as I started reading the lyrics booklet I thought maybe this would be good. It was. "Beastie," "Clasp," "Slow Marching Band" and "Broadsword" really make the album. I really like "Slow Marching Band" -- it's beautiful.
Shockingly Good.......2007-01-26
Better than A, better than War Child and Too Old To Rock, and a host of other Tull albums, this one is the synthy follow-up to A, and largely forgotten in the U.S. completely. It's a beautiful album full of layered, odd, sad and overall TULLISH songs. One of my favorites. It's different from Songs From the Wood and Heavy Horses in the same way that those albums are different than Aqualung, but it's pretty much just as good as everything else Ian Anderson wrote from 71 - 82.
Don't be closeminded, this doesn't sound like you're uncle's Locomotive Breath, and if you hate the 80's and you can't stand keyboards, well I suppose that's your loss. This is a great great record, almost no filler.
Not bad but not so good eighter !.......2007-01-14
In the same category than Stormwatch, some good tracks like Beastie, Broadsword, and Flying Color. The rest is so-so, not a classic, far away from Thick as or Aqualung.
The Broadsword is Still Sharp!.......2006-09-15
This is by far the best Tull album from the 1980s. Every song is strong, and Anderson's soaring flute and Barre's screaming guitar solos never sounded better, especially on the classic "Seal Driver." As a history buff, I also love the dark story Anderson tells in "Broadsword", looking back to bloody Viking raids across Europe during the Dark Ages. After visiting Ireland last year and learning how the Norsemen pillaged and burned their way across the countryside, I really appreciate this song now. There are also eight terrific bonus tracks on this cd, including "I Am Your Gun", which features the witty line, "It's not the gun that kills, but the man behind!" One my favorite bonus tracks is the last one, Down at the End of Your Road, which is an absolutely hilarious account of a nasty guy trying to get rid of his snobby neighbors. Other highlights include Jack-a-Lynn, a touching romantic ballad dedicated to Anderson's wife with a hard rocking ending. This cd is a must for any serious Jethro Tull collection and will not disappoint.
Justicia a quien la merece.......2006-09-12
I am still looking for the extremely simple-minded individual that condemned prog-rock to the "pretentious and excessive" musical universe. What is it with these people? Have they no ears? Have they no sense of aesthetic taste? OOOHH! I keep forgetting that they waste their lives within punk (one, two, three and lets go!) This recording surges from urgency. From the need to go forward in a changing (for the worse) musical scenario.
B & B is such a balanced approach to musical rendition. Past and future are at once present. Just listen to the jem, "Watching Me Watching You", a composition that blends both worlds effortlessly. Monsieur Barré works magic with texture and execution all along the recording. Listen to "Seal Driver" and Flying Colours".
I love STAND UP and SONGS FROM THE WOODS above all Jethro Tull recordings, but certainly BROADSWORD AND THE BEAST must bue listened to with sharp and critical criteria. Enjoy it.

After the success of their score for The Little Mermaid, the songwriting team of Howard Ashman and Alan Menken returned to Disney for their second fairy-tale adaptation. Sadly, it was the duo's last completed score before Ashman's untimely death at age 41. This soundtrack contains more-conventional show music than The Little Mermaid, owing in large part to Broadway stalwart Angela Lansbury and to Jerry Orbach's Yves Montand impersonation. Most of the songs here were included in the subsequent Broadway adaptation and its cast album, but this disc is superior in its studio polish and cast, which is better suited to the score. --John Sanchez
Customer Reviews:
a true masterpiece in every sense of the word.......2007-05-10
when alan menken and howard ashman put together their second disney feature i dont think that anyone could have known what a masterpiece beauty and the beast would become. the film itself was praised for its maturity and remains the only animated film in history to every be nominated for a best motion picture academy award (it deserved it instead of silence of the lambs) musically the film was magnificient as well. it was adapted into a full length broadway musical three years later. but this original piece will forever remain the benchmark for all other animated works and their music.
alan menken's hauntingly beautiful score is a true masterpiece. the musical scores for the west wing and the beast lets belle go are moving and powerful. the emotional level that every piece reaches is amazing and menken absolutely deserved this oscar for best score. this is not only his best score, but quite possibly one of the greatest musical scores in history.
SCORE 5 out of 5
the songs are all quite powerfull and fun with a definate broadway, its no wonder that it was so seamlessly turned into a broadway musical.
BELLE - this is the strongest opening to ever appear in a disney film. the broadway feel makes it a great way to kick off the film it is both fun and quirky but definately contains a more serous undertone. this was originally suppossed to be shortened down, but luckilly it was left intact. paige o'hara as belle is nothing short of amazing.
5 out of 5
BELLE (REPRISE) - this is short but is very strong due again to o'hara's vocals. her vocals paired with ashman's stirring lyrics of longing make this short but definately a winner.
5 out of 5
GASTON - this is a fun song that is both witty and darkly clever. ashman's lyrics and richard white's performance as gaston carry this song. it may be the weakest of the piece, but it's still fun and catchy and shouldn't be missed
3 out of 5
GASTON (REPRISE) - this is really just an extention of the song listed above, but this one is much more twistidly clever and is actually stronger that the first song.
3 out of 5
BE OUR GUEST - this is one of the most famous songs from the soundtrack and its obveous why after just one listen. jerry orbach and angela landsburry both give great performances that along with menken's french-influenced score and ashman's fun clever lyrics make this song sound fun and fresh. its a great song that really does epitimize the fun of the piece and of ashman's lyrics.
5 out of 5
SOMETHING THERE - this is a short little song but it is the first hint at belle and the beast as lovers. o'hara and robby benson both give great but short performances. orbach, lansbury and david ogden stiers also give fun performances as the objects. this is beautiful and romanticly sweet little song.
5 out of 5
HUMAN AGAIN - this wasn't included in the original theatrical film (why i dont know) this is a great song that is fun and brilliant. ashman yet again outdoes himself with great lyrics and again the household objects give dynamic performances. im so glad that this is back for the special edition since its a real gem that shouldn't be missed.
5 out of 5
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST - this is the most famous song from the movie and it won the oscar for best original song. just one listen shows why. lansbury gives a beautifully moving performance as mrs potts singing this. this is of course the song that shows the beast and belle as lovers and it does so perfectly. this song never dumbs things down it goes for the full romantic punch. well done
5 out of 5
THE MOB SONG - this is possibly the cleverest piece. the use of shakespearean lyrics make this a twisted and dark piece that effectively shows human nature that still rings true today. this is an overlooked but strong song that again is lifted by white's performance as the now sinister gaston.
5 out of 5
the best part of all these songs is how none of them dumb down the romance or more "adult" themes for the kiddies. this film allows itself to be fully romantic and that's why it has been so praised and lived on in such a flattering light. the near-perfect music not only aided this, but were a crucial part of this maturity.
SONGS OVERALL 5 out of 5
as i said earlier, this is one the greatest film scores of all times. it may not be as recognizable or memorable as say star wars or gone with the wind, but the emotional punch that it makes elevates it far past these other two scores. menken truly outdid himself and ashman's lyrics work perfectly. the performances from all the performers are dynamic, fun, powerful, and intense. everythign works perfectly here and truly makes for an experience that is truly magical.
Great Disney CD: For Children of all ages.......2007-02-19
I really enjoyed this CD. IT is the soundtrack for Beauty and the Beast.
I especially enjoyed " BE our Guest". This is an all around excellent Disney CD with lots of vocals, and intrigue. The singers are very talented, and well re-hearsed. I love this CD. It's worth the money. Go and buy it!!!
got this as a present for someone else.......2007-01-04
This was a present to a friend. She liked it. I love soundtracks and Disney music, so it's pretty good.
The Story Captured Through Song........2006-09-29
Disney's revival as a major animation studio began in 1989 with the release of THE LITTLE MERMAID and reached its pinnacle with BEAUTY AND THE BEAST (the only animated film ever nominated for a Best Picture Oscar). As much as the film is a visual delight, its also a musical feast for the ears. People had said for over a decade that the musical movie was dead, but BEAUTY AND THE BEAST proved otherwise and paved the way for later big-screen adaptations of famous stage musicals. Some of my favorite songs on the album include:
"Be Our Guest"--this song revived the huge dance numbers that were once commonplace in movie musicals.
"Something There"--BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is a love story and though that love is often brought to mind by the title song, it is this number that truly captures the essence of what happens between Belle and Beast.
"The Mob Song"--out of all the songs on the album, this is the one with the most masculine appeal. It's a song about burning down castles and killing an unfamiliar creature that poses no threat. There's nothing like a dash of good old violence to get the blood flowing.
This is a great soundtrack for any Disney fan, any patron of musicals, and people who love the film.
My children listen to this CD over and over.......2006-08-25
My kids (5 year old boy and 2 year old girl) LOVE this soundtrack. They make me play it repeatedly in the car, EVERYTIME we go anywhere. It is word-for-word an exact replication of the movie. I highly recommend it for any Beauty and the Beast fan.
