Enough Sousa already!.......2003-02-25

The Brass here are joined by members of the New York Philharmonic and the Boston Symphony Orchestra for a 1989 concert in Ontario. And you better believe this is good stuff. This group goes from the 1500s (Monteverdi, Gabrieli) to the 20th century (Vaughan Williams, Sousa) with a brief stop on the 18th century (two Beethoven compositions). And whether or not baroque and romantic music are your things, you gotta love the sound of a full brass ensemble. Without any strings (I'm not knocking stringed musicians here), the sound concentrates on the warmth of the trumpets, trombones, and so on.

My only complaint is that I'm sick of marches. The CD closes with a salute to John Philip Sousa. It's a ten-minute medley of all his well-known marches. The saving grace of this particular track is the fact that Charlie Daellenbach plays the piccolo solo on his tuba at one point. I love that! But aside from that, I'm rather tired of Sousa.

Too bad this CD has been discontinued. If you find one, I suggest you give it a try.
