Though fans shouldn't mistake this various-artists soundtrack for the next Toby Keith album, the music for Keith's star-turn film (also featuring Kelly Preston, Burt Reynolds, and Willie Nelson) builds from reflective balladry to unbridled, triumphant rock. It may be hard to separate the thematic sequencing from the movie it accompanies, but the soundtrack itself tells a story. It begins with Keith's melancholy, violin-drenched duet with Lindsey Haun on the title track; progresses through the spiritual uplift of a revival of "Uncloudy Day" that finds Willie Nelson and BeBe Winans joining Keith, as well as Sonya Isaacs's testament to faith on "The Battlefield" (with harmonies by Vince Gill); and culminates in the rambunctious "Big Bull Rider," the bluesy boogie of "Zig Zag Stop," and the full-throttle rock 'n' roll of the closing "Jacky Don Tucker (Play by the Rules, Miss All the Fun)." Matraca Berg, Fred Eaglesmith, and Keith's running buddy Scotty Emerick are among the others contributing tracks. While Keith sings on only 7 of the 13 cuts, there's a unifying vision throughout. --Don McLeese

Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-06-15
Toby Keith hit the jackpot! Not only is the movie one of my favorites, the soundtrack is also a favorite. You will cry a few tears in the movie, and the soundtrack will also produce those tears as you live the story all over again. I highly recommend this one.
Broken Bridges Soundtrack.......2007-05-14
I greatly enjoyed the movie and knew I would enjoy this soundtrack. I think any Toby Keith fan would. The songs are full of country charm. The movie did not get much hype, but I had seen a video clip of one song from the movie and rented it after seeing it on the display rack at Blockbuster. I loaned the movie to a friend, and we both had to go out and buy the soundtrack!
Love this soundtrack.......2007-05-09
Love the music but not really a country music fan. I heard this once and ordered it the same day.
Broken Bridges.......2007-05-07
Loved the movie, and hope to see more of the same quality soon. Had a great cast, and excellent music. Was surprised to learn this was Toby's first movie- and hope he plans to continue making movies.
Loved the movie--soundtrack is even better.......2007-04-15
This is one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard. I don't buy CD's very often, but this is one I simply could not pass up. Toby Keith has created something truly great here.

Fantastic!.......2007-01-09
As a movie soundtrack fan, I was immediately drawn to 'The Greatest Game Ever Played,' and when I got it just a few weeks ago, I wasn't dissapointed.
At first it sounds much like James Horner's 'Legends of the Fall,' but it is by no means a repeat of it. It is a beautifull soundtrack on it's own, with many different themes that keep it exciting. The music has the same early 1900's feel as the movie while stil maintaining a variety of music styles; from soaring strings to intense violin pieces to period vocals like "And the Band Played On." Like the movie, it has a very inspirational feel, and I would definately recommend it to anyone, whether fans of the movie or soundtrack lovers.
Loved the movie, love the score.......2006-03-17
I saw The Greatest Game Ever Played in the theater and became enchanted with this film, based on the true story of Francis Ouimet, a low-class amateur golfer who emerges from complete obscurity to win the U.S. Open. By the end of the movie, I realized how much I was enjoying the music and decided that I just had to buy the soundtrack.
As I have listened to this soundtrack again and again, I've been captivated by this music. The beauty and power of Brian Tyler's composition is most impressive. As an intent listener, I've been deeply moved by the expansive musical landscape that is covered in this soundtrack. The central motif, a majestic and magnanimous melody which forms the essence of the main title, is woven into tracks throughout the disc, tying everything together as part of a musical (and theatrical) storyline. Indeed, it seems like an incomplete experience if I don't listen to the entire soundtrack, start to finish, in sequential order. If you take the time to do that, you'll find it's a very rewarding listen.
4.5 Stars for The Greatest Game Ever Played.......2006-03-11
This was an excellent 10 dollar purchase from iTunes, to put it mildly. As much as I loved Tyler's The Final Cut, Darkness Falls, Timeline and Constantine scores, this tops them all. It's a loving tribute to the main character of the film and good ol' fashioned film scoring in general. I haven't seen the movie and therefore cannot comment on wether or not it works in the context of the film. I can, however, say with great pleasure what a joy it is to listen to as a solo album.
The album picks up with the main title track, and what a great track it is. Some people will say it is Horner reminiscent, and while many themes on this CD do remind me of James Horner's best work, I actually think the closer resemblance is John Debney. I'm serious - this score is in many ways similar to The Passion of the Christ. It has pounding drums and wonderful percussion and isn't afraid to go all out with the string and brass section. It's a thrilling, heroic, melodramatic and operatic score that I've enjoyed listening to repeatedly. A highly recommended score for anyone who enjoys breathtaking and moving and powerful and heroic sometimes lighthearted and always thrilling music.
cheers

One of Brian Tyler's best.......2005-10-01
Brain Tyler says of this score that "the orchestral music was influenced by the popular music of the end of the 19th Century and the start of the 20th Century - Debussy, Sibelius, Strauss, and Mahler. To me, the sound we know as 'American' was a combination of the styles of so many of these great European composers." As far as I'm concerned, this score was a lot more influenced by James Horner -- certain bits sound strikingly similar to Legends of the Fall. But don't let that put you off, because the rest of the bits don't. This score is beautiful, lively, energetic, exciting and ebullient Americana throughout -- an odd contrast to Tyler's last score, the dark beast that was Constantine. Despite the occasional "nods" to Horner, though, Greatest Game Ever Played is one of Tyler's best and most thoroughly enjoyable scores, well orchestrated and well recorded also. If it's not quite Children of Dune, it's certainly better than his best since, such as Timeline and The Final Cut, on par with his other score for Bill Paxton, Frailty, though obviously in a very different genre and with a very different sound. So if you're a fan of Brian Tyler or good, uplifting, exciting film music in general, definitely check out this score.

Fine reissue of a classic set.......2006-05-24
Think about the stupidest, most formulaic Hollywood movies you can think of: cheesy action pictures, fluffy, unfunny comedies, big but stiff epics. Now imagine that one of the greatest living composers was working in Hollywood, turning out astonishing, hauntingly beautiful and stirring musical scores for these throwaway movies. That's what you get with this set: music Henry Purcell composed for some two dozen often utterly forgettable plays (trust me--I've read a number of them!) Occasionally, when he teams up with a playwright worthy of his stature, such as John Dryden, Aphra Behn, or William Congreve, the results are even better, but for the most part you can enjoy the music here without knowing anything about the original plays.
This set originally appeared as separate LPs in the 70s and 80s, and has been long out of print. That's a pity, since Purcell spent a good deal of his short professional life in the theatre, either writing the incidental music contained on these CDs, or the music for his larger works, the semi-operas (King Arthur, The Fairy Queen, and the like). Almost all of these works are enjoyable gems; certainly, they represent a pinnacle of English 17th century music. Purcell had a genius for spinning musical gold out of the most leaden lyrics (check out his Odes and Welcome Songs on Hyperion if you don't believe me), and he does the same with the song texts in these plays.
Hogwood and the AAM offer clean, listenable performances, and the sound on these old analog discs has been cleaned up and brightened--although they were pretty good, even in the late 70s. As with most Hogwood, emotional extremes are kept to a minimum, so the "otherworldly" nature of late 17th century music, so often emphasised in more recent Baroque performances, doesn't come across here. It would be interesting to see what a group like The King's Consort would do with this music, but this set fills the major gap in the Purcell canon quite nicely.
My only beef with the reissue, as with many reissues, is that the liner notes are rather thin for a 6-cd set--the lyrics to the songs, for example, are especially missed. Still, it's a worthwhile set, and a must for fans of Purcell, English Baroque music, or anyone who just wants to experience a taste of the last days of the Restoration stage.

Dreamy atmospheric UK duo.......2003-04-07
Wafting down from the more heavenly regions of Northern London with a sound that's woozy, and wind tossed with acoustic and electric-turned-low ambience and warm analog afterglowing. Fragile and evocative female vocals from Martine Roberts and musical adventuring by Clive Painter. Mazzy Star of course and Cowboy Junkies too would be reference points, but this is more unhinged lo-fried subtle, fine, and lovely in it's organic glory. Their third by the way, and well worth seeking out.

Under Appreciated.......2002-02-27
Broken Dog is an English duo comprised of Clive Painter on instruments and vocalist Martine Roberts. Their musical world is all around dark and melancholy but not necessarily depressing. On their self-titled debut album, Clive layed down a unique guitar playing style that was very much his own. His guitar sounds almost seemed to vibrate. At times, he used it as a dark undercurrent, and at others, it sounded nearly apocalyptic. Some of that warbling guitar noise was carried over to "Zero", the bands 2nd release.
Initially, Martine's singing sounds off key, but with further plays, she should draw in most listeners. Basically, she sounds kind of lost. However, her approach adds to the mystique. What's more, Clive often finds a warm, sumptuous melody making for a nice contrast between the singing and instrumentation.
Broken Dog songs are usually fairly short, and "Zero" is no exception. The main problem with "Zero" is the album as a whole is simply to long. If they had eliminated about 4 songs, "Zero" would be a collection up with Broken Dog's best. However, this album does teeter on mopey merely due to it's length. Apparantly, the duo realized their power through conciseness since their 3rd album "Sleeve With Hearts" is an indisputable masterpiece. Broken Dog's 4th album "Brighter Now" is also nicely laconic.
All in all, I recommend "Zero" or anything by Broken Dog. They explore a warm, dark, pastoral terrain, in other words, pleasant, heady stuff. For lazy comparisons, one may think Mazzy Star or early His Name is Alive.
