5 out of 5 stars ROCKS your SOCKS OFF.......2004-05-06

If you like your punk rock with politics, SPE is for you. Not a passive CD; Really smart, conscious, and powerful words come from Mario, who I have to say is an amazing singer. This disc is also a great driving record. After just one listen, you'll want to go out and protest all the corporations!

4 out of 5 stars Raw and Powerful.......1999-11-25

The raw energy that SPE shows on this cd is outstanding. the songs on this cd are for the connesuir of powerful new punk. I just purchased the cd "wrecreation," and it is no weak sequel. SPE's power flows from Mario Jimenez's vocals, and with the oldschool guitar and drums, you can't help but enjoy this cd.

4 out of 5 stars not bad, not nad at all.......1999-06-23

I was reading this magazine with Tom from Rage Against The Machine and he was talking about this band and how good they were. So I went to the store, got it, and was very happy with it.

5 out of 5 stars It Rocks.......1998-06-25

SPE sounds a lot like Tool, only a bit more intense and less creepy. It's a worthwhile by if you're looking for something to get you pumped up.

I listen to this CD everytime I'm headed to a mountain to go riding (snowboarding). It still gets me stoked, and I've owned it for four years. Tracks 7 and 8 are particularily good. Definetly pick this one up.

5 out of 5 stars Rock w/ a brain.......2001-07-14

This record rocks. The Gato hunch was more adventurous but Wrecreation is full of songs that need to be heard. The best new emo/punk/alterno what ever rock of 98.

5 out of 5 stars 100% great CD - must own for fans of melodic hardcore.......2005-05-19

This album is terrific. There is nothing to be skipped, bypassed, turned-off, or grow tired of.
I checked their follow-up, "Wrecreation" upon its release, and it didn't measure up to this one. A very different sound, as I recall. And I haven't heard the other disc; but this CD makes them a name to recommend.
I don't like Fugazi, and I don't know other bands similar enbough to compare against this album or the general SPE sound, but I like RATM, Minor Threat, and Man Is The Bastard. Minor Threat has the fast & hard buzz, Rage has the tunes, and MITB has the percussion.
This album from SPE seems to turn-down all those elements just a notch and fuse them exceedingly well.
I LOVE THIS CD.
And right now, with much stress, I *need* to hear it and realize I've loaned it out. The snippets are great teasers to unlock the memories of rocking out and thrashing.

5 out of 5 stars Great Political Punk Rock.......2005-02-06

SPE is the kind of band that is not afraid to take a stance against Corporate America. I wish they came out now (in 2005) when we need them most. SPE, along with bands like Rage Against the Machine have a lot of guts and balls to face up to "the man," our corrupt government and high society bullsh*t. SPE does not disappoint. A great driving disc, and best with the volume maxed out.

3 out of 5 stars The poor man's Fugazi........2000-02-10

I can't really decide whether not I think this band merely "kinda rocks," or if I really like them. Stanford Prison Experiment's instrumentation is definately their strong suit. Mario Jimenez certainly means what he says, but all the lyrics have a same-y quality, and all seem to be about an omnipotent puppetmaster-type. Yes, we're talking about "The Man," "Big Brother," "Whitey." The sound here is not unlike Jawbox guitar riffs dropped inside Unsane bass and drum tracks. I hear bits of Quicksand, Jane's Addiction and even Soundgarden popping up here and there. Mario Jimenez's voice sometimes has an ability to annoy, but his nasally whine works other times, usually when he tries to avoid actual "singing." The main thing keeping me from giving Stanford Prison Experiment a shining endorsement rather than just a thumbs-up is that the songwriting shows weak spots more often than it should, and this album, while much stronger than the follow-up, "Wrecreation," which suffered from what I like to call "punk rock major label debut syndrome," still has points where the riffs don't exactly hit you where you should, and the lyrics seem a bit too calculated. Still, there is kind of a charm to a band that isn't exactly perfect. While not mind-blowing, Stanford Prison Experiment have kind of an an everyman quality. They're not musical or lyrical geniuses, but they do what they do, and are more than competent at executing it. If this album was a thesis paper, I'd give it a C+. They're damn good at being slightly above average.

5 out of 5 stars Every song on this CD is worth a damn........1998-12-09

I first saw this band opening for The Jesus Lizard and I couldn't wait for them to end. Then one day I found this CD in the dollar bin, bought it ,and now it is one of my favorites. Every song on this disc is great. Of course this is just my opinion, but that is what reviews are for. Take a listen to So Far So Good and see for yourself. If you're into stuff like Jesus Lizard than you should like Stanford. Great drumming, precision bass(Fender through a Gallen Kruger), Noisy rock guitar(including a sh!tload of effects), and a very unique vocalist makes up this great band. Two other songs to listen to before you hit the back button are El Nuevo, and Repeat Removal. The album was produced by Ted Nicely who has done the last 30 Girls Against Boys albums-so you know it's good! -Dragoon
