5 out of 5 stars Not ultimate- but wonderful, none-the-less.......2007-04-14

As good a guitarist as Julian Bream is, one must begin by acknowledging that the title of this 2-CD set containing 32 admittedly seminal pieces written for hand-played strings ( primarily, the lute) is a tad hyperbolistic. An "Ultimate" collection of anything would have to be more complete, by definition, than any two CDs can be and, again, it almost goes without saying that no two people are apt to be in total agreement about what should or should not have been included in any such collection. All caveats considered and aside, this is, indeed, a thoughtfully selected and masterfully performed collection of what is, unarguably, some of the very best classical pieces ever written for the lute. Bream plays some of them on the guitar and others on a renaissance lute - the latter giving a somewhat truer indication of the stylings and musical nuances intended by the various composers. But, even the pieces he plays on the guitar - an instrument that, in it's current form, did not exist when many of the pieces were originally composed - are sensitive and lyrical interpretations that sound as if they MIGHT have been composed for the guitar.

Without spending space here reiterating the specific pieces, their titles and lengths, I will simply list the composers whose works Bream presents so nicely in this collection. They span a range of about five centuries beginning in the time of England's Elizabeth I and spanning the years through to the 20th Century's premier Spanish and Brazilian classical guitar composers. The list reads like a `Whose Who" of classical plucked-string instrument music and of composers whose keyboard compositions work particularly well on the strings of a lute or guitar, and includes;
- John Dowland
- Francis Cutting
- Antonio Vivaldi
- Gaspar Sanz (*)
- Mateo Albeniz (*)
- Manuel de Falla
- Enrique Granados (*)
- Hector Villa-Lobos, and
- Joaquin Rodrigo
(*) = Pieces originally written for keyboard play.

Every classical guitarist has his own recognizable style and approach to the instrument and the material. An experience listener would not confuse Bream's work with that of Andres Segovia, for example: but it is not that one is better than the other. Each, in his own distinctive way, is simply superb. Though the Spanish influence is clearly audible with both musicians, Bream's stylings have a more contemporary lilt and inflection than do those of Segovia; he makes each piece his own. One suspects that each time he plays a piece it comes out differently according to the moment, his mood, the instrument and God knows what else. Segovia, on the other hand, was well known for his constancy once he had found a version of each piece that fully suited his own ear and temperament.
While I am admittedly a Segovia fan, I find Bream's renditions to be noticeably fresher and each infused with an aura of presence in the here-and-now which I find especially enjoyable.

The collection is neither complete not `ultimate', but it is VERY good and well worth having in any collection of classical guitar music. In fact, for audiophiles not familiar with this genre, it is a fair place to begin to develop an ear for and a listener's knowledge of and experience with the classical guitar.

4 out of 5 stars Very Nice Bream Collection.......2005-03-03

I have volumes one and two, but I prefer volume two because it contains later recordings, which are of a better sound quality than the tin-can reverb that predominates in volume one. I really like the inclusion of about a half dozen lute pieces in addition to the guitar. I wasn't a lute fan before, but after hearing Bream playing lute on this CD, I am a convert. Ditto with what one reviewer said about Sor's Andantino Grazioso--purely delightful.

Overall, this CD consists of a good variety of masterfully played music. I only wish most of Bream's recordings were recorded using later technology, which would make his playing shine even more.

1 out of 5 stars Not what I thought!.......2004-11-08

Well, a bit of a "anti-climax"! I was expecting something totally different. Not at all the kind of guitar music I like but will make out a great unexpected gift (hopefully). The delivery time from order to delivery was excellant, 19days - internationally!

5 out of 5 stars Ultimately Satisfying.......2004-02-03

A wonderful companion to the first set, this edition includes 20 beautifully recorded pieces by one of the master guitarists of the twentieth century. And Bream is at his best in these recordings, showing off his amazing technique, as well as his almost daunting emotional power. An amazing gift to guitarists and music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Spectacular.......2002-02-11

The brilliance of Breams guitar/lute shines through. If you love any of his work you will love this, I can never get tired of his work.Especially this one. Antantino grazioso is absolutely amazing.

4 out of 5 stars Good listening.......2000-06-11

For years I listened to the theme music on Inspector Morse and wondered what it was. Now that Amazon makes it easy to track such things down, I know. These three albums (volumes 1, 2, and 3) combine Barrington Pheloung's wonderful theme and background music with Morse's favorites (be warned, we get into some opera here). The three volumes provide an excellent evening of classical music.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent - Both Technically and Emotionally.......2006-02-08

I am new to the masterpieces of woodwind composition, and this is my first purchase of strictly woodwind works. Based on this CD,the New York Woodwind Quintet is the psychic classical music equivalent of the Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ). Each note is given the care it deserves, from the first track to the last, just as the MJQ did on most of their recordings. The fact that Elliot Carter's work is represented on this recording perhaps gives the entire album a vanguard feel - even pastoral themes communicated with a gentle horn effect seem new and edgy.

It should also be said that the precision given to the recording is only surpassed by the attention given to emotional effect. The careful listener will be rewarded with a range of feelings and moods. This is a top notch CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great Artists brisk through a difficult repertoire.......2001-09-27

These are superb artists playing on fine instruments and achieving fine balance and blend; and the sound is too good to be true. Some of these recordings come from the early 1960s but Boston Skyline have brought out the very best and it would be difficult to fault them even today.

The disc contains a variety of music ranging from the 17th Century to the present day, the latter represented above all by two eminent American composers, namely Samuel Barber and Elliot Carter. I'm afraid I've always held Elliot Carter in deep suspicion, purely a personal view since Carter, like so many of the avant garde, does not construct the musical linguistics as he goes along; thus the listener has no common musical linguistic base on which to comprehend the music inwardly. At best, to me, the music comes over as 'interesting'. In this work, at least he shows he can write something of a fugue in the fantasia. However, he commands a following and I'm bound to agree that the New York Woodwind Quintet make his music listenable.

Barber's Summer Music is a different matter entirely. The work is as approachable as any Barber and is pure summer. It begins with a lazy, laid-back (and horribly difficult intro for the bassoon which is exposed in the most upper reaches of its register); soon to dissolve into dance-like themes in rapid staccato, so light and airy they could be nothing other than summer. Then more drifting under rolling clouds set in a perfect blue sky. A beautiful work in which Barber shows he is as much at ease composing for a woodwind quintet as any other medium.

I was snared by the sensitivity of these artists, more so because their expressiveness comes across in these historic recordings without being forced. I've heard other, mechanically accurate recordings of the Neilsen and Barber but nothing that approaches the expressive qualities of this ensemble. They deserve never to be forgotten.

    *Premiere recording

Volume Five of Bridge's ongoing Elliott Carter series contains five premiere recordings, including Carter's bracing Oboe Quartet of 2001. Performed by many of the leading Carter advocates of our time, this recording is a must for those interested in keeping up with the undimmed imagination and constant creative impulse of this American master, now well into his tenth decade. Also featured on this CD is a new recording of Carter's song cycle Of Challenge and of Love, performed by the brilliant young American soprano Tony Arnold, the recent first prize winner of the Gaudeamus International competition for interpreters of contemporary music. Rounding out this CD are a series of instrumental miniatures played by dedicatees Virgil Blackwell, Charles Neidich, Ayako Oshima and Fred Sherry. In addition, the pianist Charles Rosen adds on to his earlier (almost) "Complete Piano Music of Carter" CD (BRIDGE 9090) with the Two Diversions, and Retrouvailles.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Carter continues to impress.......2006-06-27

This disc, containing seven short works and two longer ones dating from Carter's late eighties and early nineties, continues Bridge's invaluable series of recordings of works by this modern American master. As with all Bridge's recordings, the performers are almost always musicians with a long history of performing Carter's music (here including the group Speculum Musicae, the cellist Fred Sherry and the pianist Charles Rosen), and this certainly helps to give the performances an authoritative air.

The disc starts with a bang--Carter's bass clarinet solo Steep Steps (so titled because of the importance of leaps of a twelfth in the composition). This is a vigorous and highly enjoyable work that provides an ideal disc opener. More dry are the Two Diversions, two pieces for the advanced piano student. These two works complement each other well; the first simpler, the second rhythmically complex.

The Oboe Quartet is one of Carter's more important recent scores. Written in a single multi-section movement, it alternates between tutti passages and duets for pairs of instruments, and demonstrates (as does much of Carter's recent music) that a strictly atonal style need not reduce a composer's capacity for lyricism. If I'm not sure that Speculum Musicae's performance here quite matches the intensity of Holliger and friends on ECM, this is still a fine reading of a significant work.

The disc then returns to a couple of miniatures. Figment No 2 for solo cello is one of a series of works in which Carter pays homage to musical figures important to him when he was younger, and though there are no obvious stylistic references to Ives, the work does include fragmentary quotations and hints of hymnic writing. Au Quai, by contrast, is a tribute to a composer and conductor who has done so much for Carter's own music--Oliver Knussen, on his 50th birthday. Written for the unusual combination of viola and bassoon, this is a delightful, charming miniature with a wonderfully sense of timing.

Returning to major works, once again, Of Challenge and of Love is one of Carter's many recent song cycles (though the only mature work of his for voice and piano). A setting of five poems by John Hollander, this builds to an expressive climax in the lengthy fourth poem, Quatrains from Harp Lake, before the almost anticlimactic close, End of a Chapter. Having only heard this work though Lucy Shelton's premiere recording on Koch, I found much more warmth in it in this reading, with the fine Tony Arnold the soprano soloist, though I don't think it will ever rank amongst my favourite late Carter works.

The disc ends with three more miniatures. Figment No 1 for solo cello is one of Carter's finest short works, ranging over the whole expressive gamut despite being based entirely on one short idea. Retrouvailles is a brief and comparatively simple (for Carter, at least) study for piano, written for Pierre Boulez's 75th birthday, while Hiyoku, a duet for two clarinets, effectively explores the contrast between the two instruments playing similar and different material.

This is another impressive release in Bridge's Carter series. Lovers of the composer's music will not hesitate to snap it up.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic from the first piece.......2006-01-22

Carter lets the bass clarinet show off every bit of its range in Steep Steps, from soulful low bass lines, through a smoky lower-midrange area, to an almost sax-like upper register.

All the cellos pieces are great, and the oboe quartet? The other reviewer nailed it; it's like the oboe is playing the lead violin line.

5 out of 5 stars Vive le Carter!.......2003-07-07

The fifth offering in Bridge's indispensible series of the music of Elliott Carter contains nine compositions written from 1994 to 2002, when the composer, incredibly, was between the ages of 85 and 93. There are the usual short gems for various instruments that Carter has made a specialty in recent years. The disk begins with the fascinating "Steep Steps" for solo bass clarinet, an instrument Carter has exploited to great effect in his Piano Concerto and Triple Duo. Fred Sherry delivers a haunting rendition of "Figment No. 2" for solo cello. Subtitled "Remembering Mr. Ives" (Carter first met Ives as a teenager), the piece conveys a nostalgia rare in Carter's work, with short phrases evoking, though not quoting, the kind of hymns Ives used in his music. The Two Diversions for Piano are more transparent than some of Carter's other piano pieces, and rightfully so, since they were written for the Millenium Piano Book for pianists of intermediate skills. Charles Rosen, a long-time Carter champion, provides tender and beautiful readings. Soprano Tony Arnold's rendition of the song cycle "Of Challenge and of Love" seems softer and less forced than Lucy Shelton's premiere recording, which is all to the good, but for me the highlight of the disk is the Oboe Quartet, a major 14-minute work that shows Carter at the top of his instrumental game. Despite its unrepentant modernist idiom, this composition has a classical elegance, a romantic sensuousness, and a Baroque richness of counterpoint that doesn't showcase the soloist as much as make him a first among equals. It is as though the composer had written a new string quartet with the oboe subbing for the first violin. I could not wish for a better performance.

5 out of 5 stars Return of the King of all Koto CDs.......2006-05-30

Good things come in 3's, I guess. Like its two predecessors, this is really an excellent CD of koto music, making for an incredible trilogy. Once again, the sound quality is crystal clear, the performances inspired and superb, and the music itself very beautiful--in a rather different way this time. Strange even, but it works all the same.

The prior two "Art of the Koto" CDs covered the historical development of koto music from the 1600's until the early 1900's, and so this album picks up where they left off by covering the innovations of the late twentieth century (from 1969 to 1989). Appropriately enough, all the music here is played on the 21-string koto invented after WWII rather than on the usual 13-string koto. The first track, composed by Miki Minoru (the guy who formed Pro Musica Nipponia, the music group that brought us the great album "Japan: Traditional Vocal and Instrumental Music") is weird and experimental...almost harsh on the ears sometimes. The second piece (five tracks), by Nagasawa Katsutoshi, is hauntingly beautiful and meditative. The third composition (two tracks) is by Miki Minoru again, this time more like the kind of music I'm used to by him, skillfully blending traditional Japanese music with modern musical sensibilities in a new and wonderful synthesis. "Nanae" by Nishimura Akira is somewhat similar to track one: eerie and experimental, abrupt and harsh on the ears in spots but still strangely appealing in a twilight zone way. Finally, Sato Somei's composition is rather alien sounding in a quiet, retro-primitive manner--a creative imagining of what protohistorical Japanese koto music for the deities might have sounded like (talk about full circle). These are all pretty unique selections, too--I doubt you'll ever find them on another CD in the States.

Again as with volumes one and two, the liner notes for this album are incredibly extensive and full of detail. It's wonderfully clear that much effort went into them, and one gets a real crash course in modern koto music from reading along--this is especially important in volume three's case, as this CD covers ground not usually found elsewhere. First we get a good description of the 21-string koto, its invention and history, and its place in the overall development of koto music as a whole. Next each track is introduced and explained in fine, loving detail--including lots of information about each individual composer. And musicological details for the music expert are included as is usual with this series. Finally, each performer is introduced along with a quick summary of her or his career.

Like volumes one and two, this is an excellent CD on all counts. As an album it may very well stand on its own well enough, but listening to it after the prior two volumes is probably better. My sense is that it may be hard to appreciate what the composers and musicians are accomplishing if unaware of the musical tradition they are building upon and innovating in new directions. Also this is very atypical koto music (even the actual instrument is atypical) so I wouldn't recommend this CD as an introduction nor as a first koto CD. If you've listened to volumes one and two or otherwise familiarized yourself with the Japanese koto, though, this stuff will blow you away.

5 out of 5 stars Poor, poor Spohr!.......2003-03-10

Poor, poor Spohr! He's constantly dismissed because he's not Beethoven. What he was, though, was a thoroughly competent composer of the Beethoven ilk who wrote tons of chamber music that is not only fun to play but to hear. Nothing earth-shattering, mind you, but he was a skillful craftsman and could write in extended forms with the best of them. And he could write a tune, too. Most of his stuff is violin-driven: he was a violin virtuoso and his first violin parts are usually pretty showy.

This is the continuation of a series that started out on Marco Polo and has been transferred over to the budget Naxos label. There are seven quintets, all with an extra viola like Mozart's, and they are played quite well by the Haydn Quartet with Sandor Papp, viola, sitting in.

Frankly, I adore Spohr (no rhyme intended). His is easy music to like and it's also music that, I hate to say it, makes wonderful background music for when you're reading the paper, or doing your taxes, or driving in traffic.

      The whole series is recommended.
