4 out of 5 stars A jazz relic from the dawn of the digital age.......2007-04-02

Aside from its historic digital roots (and I should note a very limited number of artists were doing digital recordings in the late 70s / early 80s), is this disk really listenable (except for showing off your Krell/Wilson Audio system)? My answer is yes!...but... My major issue: Sometimes it's like Switched On Jazz meets Manheim Steamroller with cheezy synthesizer sound. In addition, the sax has what I call false studio echo (that electronicy-sounding decay that makes instruments or voices sound bigger than they are). It doesn't sound real. I suspect a bit of a false rigging to the sound engineering that shows up the very naissance of digital recordings (or onanistic digitalis). The other question regards how a recording sampled at 50.4Khz was transferred into redbook CD at 44.1Khz without leaving the digital domain...

5 out of 5 stars TRICYCLE is NOT Jazz Child's Play.......2005-12-30

You can be assured that any time a Flim and the BB's CD enters your digital stereo domain - you are in for a treat. TRICYCLE is no stranger to this idea. In fAact, it is probably in my top ten most loved Jazz Albums along with Coltrane's Blue Trane and Miles' All Blues - It relally is that good!! It is jazz and improvisation at its finest. Dick Oatts and Billy Barber continue to remain innovative and creative in their approach to Jazz improv. Bill Berg is as masterful a drummer as you could ever "wish upon a star" for and Flim (JImmy ) Johnson has proven over and over again to be one of THE bassists that the world of jazz must stand up for. Add this CD to your collection byut don't stop there, you must also add BIG NOTES, TUNNEL, NEON, NEW PANTS, THIS IS A RECORDING, and THE FURTHER ADVENTURES OF FLIM AND THE BB"S to your collection as well. Lift them all onto your MP3 player and enjoy hours of pure Jazz GENIUS.

5 out of 5 stars The gold standard for stereo evaluations.......2005-09-27

Where to start. This was the first Flim album I ever heard and I was absolutely smitten. This disc and possibly Big Notes are the discs to use for stereo evaluations in my book. Incredible sonic range. If a stereo has a weakness this disc WILL find it. Carry this disc to the store to try out systems and crowds gather to listen. You will be asked about the disc and artists so be prepared to tell them all about Flim and the BB's. If you only have room for one Flim disc in your library, this is the one.

5 out of 5 stars One of a kind.......2005-03-03

I first heard this CD when it was first released. The DMP label was only released on CDs. Tom Jung is the engineer on the series of recordings by Flim and the BBs. Musically, this is original music. Theres nothing to compare it to. My initial exposure was the result of a magazine called Digital Audio. This publication was highly critical of the technical aspects of digital audio. This album was, and to me, still is the challenge to all to properly mike and record a live performance. The dynamic range of the CD is paralleled with the future efforts by Flim and the BBs. Again, credit Tom Jung. The recordings were, as I understand, laid out in one take. No overdubs here, and no remixing.
The lead in piano work on the first track will tempt you to turn up the volume to hear it all. The bass and drums blast in to fill in the developing riff and the CD is a great musical journey from there. I do highly reccomend these CDs for their sound quality. Some of the future efforts were critisized musically by some reveiwers. My advice is not to expect the recording quality on the CD New Pants. It is a clean effort, but the quality is not the same. Other CDs on DMP are good. None equal, to me , Flim and the BBS.

5 out of 5 stars One of the First CDs - Still a Classic Listen.......2000-06-15

I bought this CD in 1984 and still listen to it frequently. While it is fair to say that it was originally popularized as a test disc for high-end stereo systems (it showed off the "new" CD format to great effect), the music is what has kept it alive in my collection. Not easily categorized...kind of a light jazz meets new age meets pop, with a unique spin. Above all, the music has an optimism, a jubilant quality that's hard to describe but immediately apparent. Go for it...I bought several more Flim CDs after this one if that tells you anything. By the way, another exellent choice from this band is "Further Adventures"...but then again they're all really good.

Product Description

The Union Trade subscribe to an ethic of experimentalism, intent on creating music with a visceral impact. This attitude is reflected in their use of effects, the manipulation of instrumental sounds and feedback, changing tempos, unique song structures, and varying time signatures. The Trade's sound reveals the band's alternative, indie and post-rock influences such as Sonic Youth, Slint, Ride, Mineral, The Verve, Mogwai, Explosions In The Sky, The Appleseed Cast, Longwave, and Film School. The final, perhaps defining, element of The Union Trade sound is their ability to channel this sonic ambition into carefully crafted and accessible songs with emotional immediacy, in emulation of artists and bands such as Neil Young, Sunny Day Real Estate, Pedro The Lion, Early Day Miners, The New Year and Earlimart.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful, atmospheric and moving.......2007-02-12

This Union Trade Album is so cinematic and moving. Its quite life changing, The sound is a mixure of shoegaze like ride, slowdive, with the instrumental feeling of mogwai. its truly original and bringing back showgaze in a whole new way with a little aggression thats so believable. The vocals are so rich and nicely effected just adding to the mood and not taking away from it. If you want music that moves you buy this album. I cant wait for thier full length.

5 out of 5 stars If you are a fan of the Feelies, DO NOT HESITATE.......2005-02-17

This is full of warm jangly vibes and even has some of that nice Feelies electric guitar soloing sound. It has great production, not wispy or flakey at all. I wish I had found out about this release sooner. It's already 11 years old!

5 out of 5 stars A wondeful warm, loving, album!.......2003-06-10

The lineage of this northern New Jersey trio offers a polite starting point for understanding its sunny songs. Bassist/Vocalist Brenda Sauter played with both the kings of frenetic jangle, 'The Feelies', and the more folksy-leaning 'Speed The Plough'. But Sauter's new band, in which she does all the singing and lyric-writing, could've just as easily been high on the spirit of The Feelies when they wrote 'Tricycle', considering Wild Carnation's affinity for pop highs and jingly guitar sounds like those created by Glenn Mercer and Bill Million. Not to say at all that Wild Carnation is an exact rip-off of the Feelies but the group's sprightly electric/acoustic guitar interplay and driving melodies, along with Sauter's plaintive but firm vocals, that threaten to lift right off the ground in pursuit of the next billowy cloud are very reminiscent of her fellow ex-counterparts Glenn Mercer and Bill Million's tunes. Heartfelt dreamers and lovers of breezy acoustic pop are recommended to check out Wild Carnation's new album Tricycle, it's a crisp, fully-realized and lovely debut that captures the spirit of gorgeous song writing.

The band Wild Carnation was founded by Richard Barnes (Electric and acoustic guitars, organ, bells) and Chris O'Donovan (Drums, percussion, backing vocals) in 1992; after a few months the ex-Feelies Bass player Brenda Sauter (Bass, vocals, acoustic guitar, bells), who is also Richard's wife, joined the group.

They recorded their first album (Tricycle) in 1994: Brenda wrote all the lyrics, while the composition of music has been a collaborative effort amongst all three members of the band.

5 out of 5 stars Another Big Winner.......2006-05-21

TriCycle is a slight pun - it refers to the performers' desire to experiment with the full capabilities of digital music.

Acoustic dynamic range is the first promise explored here. That's quickly followed by usage of synthesizers and drums to maximum effect.

It's a pioneering effort that still sounds absolutely great today. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars the seminal cocktail culture composer.......2004-07-05

Finally, a stateside reissue of the seminal cocktail culture composer Bob Thompson's landmark lounge album, The Sound of Speed, has been released on CD courtesy of those pop culture archeologists at Dionysus, and the tireless efforts of Thompson's son, Spenser. The brilliant Thompson, a contemporary of such celebrated and better known RCA mood music magicians like Juan Garcia Esquivel and Henry Mancini, is long overdue for popular and critical re-discovery, and this crucially cool LP is a perfect launching pad for this revival.

Recorded in Rome in 1960, The Sound of Speed may seem relatively syrupy in our current culture of hyper-frenetic bass beats and pulse-pounding urban rhythms, but this music hails from a totally different context and era: The Space Age, when rest and relaxation were as much a part of our perceived future as electronically enhanced convenience. While Bob Thompson was at the peak of his powers, a lifestyle of luxury was promised for all, from the stay-at-home mom to the working stiff to the corporate climber. The soothing, stirring orchestration on this collection conveys both inspiration and intoxication. Each track is devoted to a different mode of transportation, most incorporating (or "sampling") the actual mechanical sounds of the object in musical question.

The soaring rhapsody of "Star Fire" (Jet Plane) and the bouncy lushness of "Early-Bird Whirly-Bird" (Helicopter) have been heard before on lounge compilations, but the rest of the dozen tunes here will be beautiful new music to the lucky listener's ears. From the continental coolness of "La Vespa" (Motor Scooter) to the dreamy drama of "Sub-Manhattan Blues" (Subway Train) to the aquatic aural atmosphere of "Sea-Spray" (Speed Boats) to the cosmic blast of "Count Down" (Missile), Bob Thompson will take you for one wild, wondrous ride. The destination for each traveler is the same: the sanctuary of your own sonically soused soul.

Along with the original cover and liner notes, the CD package also includes excerpts from an interview yours truly did with Bob for the Fall 2002 issue of ATOMIC Magazine, in which he humbly acknowledges the resurgence of interest in his music with bemused appreciation. Here's to you, Mr. Thompson: cheers, and thanks for the bright, shiny, brand new musical memories. The 21st Century welcomes you!
