By 1973, the Band were at a crossroads. Having summed up the first phase of their recording career with the Rock of Ages concert recording, Robbie Robertson flirted with an ambitious project inspired by Polish composer Krzystof Penderecki. But instead of forging ahead into uncharted territory, the quintet opted to hearken back to their roadhouse days with an LP that renovated oldies associated with the likes of Clarence "Frogman" Henry, the Platters, and Fats Domino. Given that Robertson's originals were no longer coming as fast and true as in the late '60s, a covers collection was a wise move. After all, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, and Richard Manuel were all vocalists who could tackle classics from the canons of Chuck Berry ("The Promised Land"), Bobby "Blue" Bland ("Share Your Love"), and Sam Cooke ("A Change Is Gonna Come") without straining under the weight of the originals. The 2001 reissue of this unaffected delight is fleshed out with a half-dozen outtakes that fit in nicely with the 10 tracks from the original LP. --Steven Stolder

Essential, good-times warmup for the final masterpiece.......2007-01-08
The story behind Moondog Matinee is pretty well-known, so I won't rehash it in too much detail; Robbie Robertson was having trouble with his songwriting muse since the soulless disappointment, Cahoots, and the rest of the group was treading water with varying amounts of drug abuse as a result of their success and lack of direction, so they all (I think at Robbie's behest) decided to cut an album of good time rock and roll, some of which they used to play as (Levon and) the Hawks. Despite its labels as an "oldies album," most of these songs really weren't that old, and many of them weren't even played by The Band when they were the Hawks ("A Change Is Gonna Come" wasn't even recorded by Sam Cooke until 1964). Rather, I think this album should be looked at as a collection of interpretive playing and singing of some great rock and roll in the inimitable style of The Band. They may have been having trouble coming up with high-quality original material (which, unfortunately is what the public really wanted--Moondog Matinee received a lukewarm reception despite the quality of the music), but The Band's playing and singing is still unmatchable, and a return to the style of music they started out playing really reinvigorated their energy and produced a great album.
The great thing about Moondog Matinee is that it's a representation of some really classic songs that everyone knows, but it also has some pretty obscure gems in there as well. The first few songs fall into the latter category--they're known among early rock circles, but were never huge hits. Each features a different group member on lead vocals. "I Ain't Got No Home" features a really fun Levon Helm vocal with some racing keys from Garth Hudson, and that crazy frog voice contraption that Hudson rigged up. The man is a genius, musically and technically. "Holy Cow" has a really fun Rick Danko vocal--you can tell they were having a great time playing this music, and it shows in the end product. "Share Your Love With Me" proves that Richard Manuel hadn't lost the ballad croon that used to make the girls hot.
The Band's version of "Mystery Train" is unquestionably essential, with a few new lyrics and a funky groove, spacey intro, and nimble clavinette part. "Third Man Theme" is the only track that doesn't fit; it kind of just sounds like carousel music. "Promised Land" and "The Great Pretender" are super readings of classics, and "Saved" is an album highlight with a tongue-in-cheek vocal from Manuel combined with some great bass drum. "A Change Is Gonna Come" is also certainly an essential reading of a standard tune, right up there with Otis Redding's, Aretha Franklin's, and Cooke's own version.
Out of all the remastered Band albums, this one has by far the most meaningful bonus tracks, containing 5 more covers that could have easily fit in with the album ("Going Back to Memphis" is my favorite), and the only original song written by Robbie Robertson between Cahoots and their final studio masterpiece.
I recommend this album after you're a fan of their first three and have been disappointed by Cahoots--once you hear that The Band was still able to crank out the magic, playing and singing just as well as the ever did (only waiting for some good material), Northern Lights - Southern Cross will blow you away.
The Birth Of THE BAND.. Genius At Play At The Jook Joint.......2006-09-01
Despite whatever personal problems or lack of direction this group was rumoured to be going through at the time, what you have here is a great Cover album of tunes that are not only unmistakenly the Band but moreso an album catching them revisiting their roots at a pinnacle when their powers were at a point when reminiscing back was a needed step as they still went forward creating a couple of more masterpieces to their catalogue before their ending.
To my ears the playing here is very inspired, emotional and all their elements, that rowdy barband , Dylan's frontmen, going on into their familiar anachronistic roots territory of Big Pink hinting at the future masterpiece of Northern Lights that was to follow are all in the grooves here..the keyboard wizadry, sharp guitar notes, touches of brass in the right places those sincere tremendous vocalists all add to a winner and maybe the best cover band album of all time.
Going through many CD reissues, these Remasters are the best with all the outtakes, prior unreleased tracks, notes, remastered sound all artwork reproduction restored faithfully(the great original artwork depicting the Roadhouse Street Corner that adorned the album when it first came out is here).
One can write endlessly on The Band, this CD is an oddity in their catalogue but a winner and one that is a good starting point for those discovering the professional textures and tones of this all important band for the 1st time around.
ONE OF THE BEST BY THE BAND.......2006-08-01
THIS IS AN ALBUM OF OLDIES DONE BY THE BAND. EVEN THOUGH THEY'RE OLDIES, YOU KNOW IT'S THE BAND PLAYING THESE TUNES. THEY MAKE EVERY SONG THEIR OWN. GREAT VOCALS BY LEVON HELM, GARTH HUDSON, AND SOME GREAT GUITAR PLAYING BY ROBBIE ROBERTSON ON THIS ALBUM. WHAT I FOUND INTERESTING IS THAT THEY DO THE SONG "SHARE YOUR LOVE WITH ME", WHICH IS ALSO COVERED BY ARETHA FRANKLIN, WHO ALSO DID A COVER OF THE BANDS' SONG "THE WEIGHT". GREAT SONGS ON THIS ALBUM INCLUDE "MYSTERY TRAIN" , (JET TO) THE PROMISED LAND (WHERE ARE YOU, ELVIS, JERRY GARCIA AND BOB WEIR?) AND "A CHANGE IS GONNA COME" (THE GREAT SAM COOKE SONG).
Highly Recommendable!.......2006-07-28
This 1973, often overlooked, album is at the same time a very different album and still a typical Band album. Different because all songs ( on the original version ) are cover versions and typical because the sound and playing style is unmistakeably the Band's.
Personal problems and outside project were among the reasons that the group did not write and record much new material during 1972-73, and the idea came up to do an album entirely of covers. Though covers, many songs actually sound like Band originals and some of them are among the very best Band recordings.
Especially the songs with lead vocals from Richard Manuel and Rick Danko stand out. Somehow it was decided the Leveb Helm did the most straight-forward rocking songs, which solid but not outstanding.
Manuel's performance on Bobby Bland's "Share Your Love" is simply beatiful. And absolute highlight and a recording on par with the very best Band originals. The same can almost be said about the more commercial "The Great Pretender" - another Manuel performance.
Third Manuel lead vocal is found on the "Leiber/Stoller" rocker "Saved". A good track, but really no more than that.
Rick Danko shines on Sam Cooke's anthem "A Change is Gonna Come" which closed the original album. Actually I prefer this version to Sam Cooke's original, which seems a little burdened down by too heavy orchestration.
The catchy "Holy Cow" performed by Danko, tongue in cheek, is another favourite.
There is a fine instrumental of the old movie theme "Third Man Theme" played in a similar mood to "Island" from their last studio album.
The rest of the album solid, with Levon Helm vocally in front.
The bonus tracks mostly sound like demos or unfinished outtakes.
Two important exceptions, though, is the exquisite Robbie Robertson original "Endless Highway" - great to finally have this song on an album; one of the very few new songs that Robertson wrote for the Band during this period. Lead vocals from Danko.
"Crying Heart Blues", also with Danko up front, sounds like song that could have come from debut album "Music From Big Pink" - another highlight!
Like on all the other Band re-issue original albums a fine booklet is included. Extensive back-ground information about each recording.
Highly recommendable!

The world can never have enough Buddy Holly songs. And as Holly hasn't been around since 1959, the music of Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys performs a public service, as Big Sandy not only channels the pure sincerity of Holly's tenor and the sweet innocence of that musical era, but writes songs such as "Love That Man" and "The Ones You Say You Love" that sound as fresh now as Holly's forever will. Yet Big Sandy and the Boys don't confine themselves to a single genre (neither, for that matter, did Holly and the Crickets), as the roadhouse twang of "The Great State of Misery," the horn-laden, Stax/Volt R&B of "Slipping Away," and the Western swing of "Yes (I Feel Sorry for You)" all combine for the platter party conjured by "The Power of the 45," which opens and closes the album. "Drop the needle in the groove and start to move," the song implores, and it's hard to resist the invitation. --Don McLeese

A sure fire solid sender..........2007-01-24
Having known Robert (Robert Williams, aka Big Sandy) for seemingly decades now, following and supporting them on tours since his days with the Fly Rite TRIO and back in the day when even Will B. and the legendary, untouchable T.K. Smith was playing guitar....it's good to see the boys still doing what they have always done. Sure there have been some personnel changes along the way, but Big Sandy has always been the pinnacle of this music, only rivaled by such cats as Dave and Deke when they were still together (Deke has gone on solo now - Dave too, but to a lesser extent), or possibly the Lucky Stars and the Horton Brothers. Still, Big Sandy and gang keep on keepin' on.
This latest is no exception. If you know this scene, then I really need to explain it or describe much further. But it is amazing, as usual. Get this latest one as soon as you can, and you won't regret it. Sounds of Speedy West, Jimmy Bryant, Bob Wills and such will come flooding from your hi-fi with a "modern" touch. You can't go wrong.
Great Album.......2007-01-10
This is a real fun album to listen to. It's up-beat and catchy.
Keep on Boppin'.......2006-11-04
If you are unfamiliar with Big Sandy, this is as good an album to begin with as any, solid tracks ready to provide the beat for your next house dance party. Those well versed in Big Sandy's medium will find no surprises here-another solid effort in the west coast rockabilly/country sounds for which he is known.
Turntable Magic.......2006-07-26
So, all right it's a c-d, but "Turntable Matinee" reminds those of us old enough to remember what it was like to set the needle in the groove and hear something special and not bat an eye at an occasional crackle or pop. This album is fantastic. Most are comparing it to Buddy Holly & the Crickets. There's some truth to that, but I'm hearing some Nick Lowe & Rockpile in there too. This album has a great "live" feel to it. I'm already looking to see what club they'll be coming to in my area.
A New Release from Big Sandy!!!.......2006-07-15
wow, sandy is back with a big time cd!! here's the deal
1. This album from the start is a lot faster than some of the other albums. Very energetic and very danceable.
2. of course, everyone is in top form musically.
3. another perfect mix of swing, rockabilly, some jump....
4. a fun, well produced, quickstep of an album. pick it up!!
Any new Sandy is always good.

timeless masterpiece.......2007-06-02
this is a must for anyone appreciating true artistic achievement, espcially in this day and age of glorified karaoke'....not many albums come along with this level of sound, writing and performing...note: Performing, not lip-syncing BS
Absolutely amazing stuff.......2007-05-05
I heard Last Plane Out on the radio when it was first released and bought the CD on the strength of that one track. I was amazed that it wasn't the only good track on the recording. Not only that, it wasn't even the best track on the recording. There isn't a bad song on this disc. Absolutely stellar work from people I had never heard of.
Years later I went to research the orgins of this recording because rarely does something this good disappear so fast. I was saddened to hear of the passing of the (apparent) principle architect, Kevin Gilbert. Well crafted music, great hooks, and exemplary production values are in abundance on this recording.
It is a very rare example of a once in a lifetime convergence of talent in the right place at the right time. I can't recommend it highly enough.
As a somewhat frightening side note, Last Plane Out was eerily premonitory or at least startlingly similar to predicaments that we now find ourselves in (as this review was written). It seems to apply to several current situations, at least 17 years after it was written.
Get 'Third Matinee' as well............2007-03-07
This is a great, great CD. And if you like it, get the followup 'Third Matinee'. I think it's just as good.
Mesmerizing..........2007-01-19
I'd seen the cover of this album for years, used as a promotional in an audio engineering magazine advertisement for noise reduction systems. "What a silly looking album cover..", I thought. Years later, I happened to see a copy of this album at a studio where I was working. I slipped into an empty room and put it on. Halfway through the 1st cut, "Last Plane Out", I felt like quitting the business. The sound, the production, the vocals, the music, and the lyrics were like nothing I had ever heard. The beginning of "Things She Said" had the hair on my arms standing straight up. I don't think any single piece of music has ever moved me the way this song has. A few weeks later, I found this CD in a cut-out bin for $2. Sad testament to what happens to the real talent out there. Kevin did a solo album before he died called "Thud", a much 'darker' and revealing work, but in many ways more powerful than "Toy Matinee". From a production and engineering standpoint, "Toy" is as much a reference tool as "Aja".
Too Bad it's their only CD.......2007-01-19
It sounds like the guys of Toy Matinee did not agree on alot of stuff, even during this project, so that's probably the reason for only this release. The problem with getting this one is that sellers will tell you that "it's the extended version" when it isn't. I trusted my seller and he did not know the truth. Make sure you are buying the 14 Track CD instead of the original 9 track version. The music is great and the lyrics are advanced for a first time release. It came out the time I was experiencing the new music from new group TOTO, and they are still putting out strong material. This one got past me the first time around, but I'm glad I discovered it last year. Get the 14 track extended version!

Album Description
Highly anticipated debut album from indie darlings Math and Physics Club! The world fell in love with this Seattle band as soon as its debut `Weekends Away' was released in 2005. The EP sold out of its initial pressing in just a few months and has now earned the distinction as the best selling single on Matinée. The follow-up `Movie Ending Romance' was released later that year to worldwide acclaim and proved the success of the debut was no happy accident. The band spent the past year writing and recording its debut album and the results are truly spectacular. The self-titled album features ten highly melodic songs about relationships and heartbreak. From the first moment of the opening track you know you're in for a treat and it doesn't let up until the final note some 30 minutes later. The album kicks off with a new indie classic called `Darling, Please Come Home.' The lyrics draw you in immediately with images of fireflies and coals burning low, while the jangling guitars, precise drumming, and keyboards keep things moving. What would normally be a difficult one to follow for most bands is handled with ease by second track `I Know What I Want,' a strings-laden jangler that builds to a superb Softies-inspired finish. It swings! `April Showers' comes next and shows that here's a band that holds the Housemartins in the high regard they deserve. A sweet valentine written staring out the window at the rain (of course...this is Seattle), it recalls the brilliance of the famous Hull act with its ba-ba-ba's and jaunty melodies. `Holidays and Saturdays' is the moody one of the bunch, showcasing plaintive lyrics and some violin to match, while `La La La Lisa' picks it back up with the story of a high school crush on a girl with a bass guitar that is made especially grand with some genuinely inspired trumpet parts. `Look At Us Now' is perfect café music with its sparse bossa nova beat, ba-ba-ba's, and violin...perhaps the best Style Council song Paul Weller never wrote? `You'll Miss Me' is classic Math and Physics Club with a surprise rollicking piano in the second chorus, while `Cold As Minnesota' has a bit of Motown/Supremes flavor to it--full of tambourine, handclaps, organ and violin flourishes along with some very Peter Buck guitar work. `Such A Simple Plan' is another perfect three-minute pop song with excellent lyrics and a toe-tapping quotient that can't be beat, and final track `Last Dance' is a swanky little number that will make you want to dance like Fred Astaire. Perfect for fans of the abovementioned bands, The Lucksmiths, Belle and Sebastian, The Smiths, or Acid House Kings, this is a remarkable debut that will surely rank among the best albums of the year.

I was anxiously awaiting this release and I was wondering all the while if their debut full length album could be as good as their 2 EP's. Well I am happy to report that this album takes a step or two beyond on those two original EP's. The musicianship is top notch and the band has never sounded better. There is not one bad song here. I notice in some songs that MAPC seem to borrow familiar sounds and musical ideas from other bands that I love but they somehow make those sounds new and refreshing. Like I have said before they wear their musical influences on their sleeves. I can't really say enough good things about this album or this band. Now if I can only catch them on tour sometime my life will be complete.

Customer Reviews:
Hes a groove master with a cool blaster.......2006-12-15
I first bought this lp back in 1986 and had to travel 300 miles to london to find it, and boy was it worth it. As nile traveled and produced the best of the 80's, this solo work is a work of art trying out new skills. A few stand out tracks such as 'state your mind' and 'lets go out tonight', sung with alfa ( now a high school principal) but the high lights has to be 'Groovemaster', a funky dance tune that gets your groove going. And a track thats in my top 10. Nice to see it on normal sale, my cd was a jap import with a mass of info all in japanese. An over looked cd that desreves a fair hearing.
On His Own!.......2005-12-21
Long ago, I bought Nile's first solo record, "Adventures In The Land of the Good Groove" and loved all the songs on it. Later, I heard about his second record and the single, "Let's Go Out Tonight" but never saw the disc on the shelves at the stores.
Fast forward to 2005.
I found "B-Movie Matinee" on cdnow.com and swooped in on the opportunity to buy it! I wondered how Mr. Rodgers could possibly follow up "Adventures..." - a largely ignored record that was truly worthy of greater recognition. Unfortunately, Nile and his partner-in-crime were being celebrated more for the music they created for other artists. I only heard "Yum-Yum" (extended version with a beautiful guitar passage) once on an R&B station and somebody had to tell me about the title track. It appears the same is true for this set as well, as sad as that is.
There is some really good music on this disc. It follows the lead set by "Adventures..." with programmed drums and lots of synthesizers - only moreso.
My favorite is "State Your Mind" - a song with a strong steady beat, as if former Chic drummer Tony Thompson was holdin' it down. Nile delivers another great guitar solo on this tune. The chorus is sung with the type of deliberation that Chic used in "Give Me The Lovin". There is a timeless quality to this song - it almost could have made the cut for Chic's later CD, "Chic-ism" which was out in 1992!
The most commercially oriented cut, "Let's Go Out Tonight" features Chic vocalist Alfa Anderson. It features a touch of Japan including Japanese rap.
"Groove Master" is a synthed-out track highlighting Nile's skills on bass and guitar, while "Stay Out of the Light" takes it a step farther with a spaced-out, Twighlight Zone sound. With its chorus repeated over and over, it manages to evoke earlier Chic cuts like "So Fine" from "Take It Off", "City Lights" from "Tongue In Chic", and "You Got Some Love For Me" from "Believer".
"Wavelength", the ballad, is breezy and relaxed compared to the kinetic energy of some of the other cuts.
This CD has pretty good production quality for a disc that was released years ago. A small strip across the upper left corner announces that this is a digital recording - which was a big deal in those days. There is also the ever-present reverberation of the "Chic sound" - after all, Nile Rodgers is one of the two masterminds behind that sound!
It's a shame that this album went largely ignored; this is fun music! The contrast of synthesizers/drum machines/vocal effects against Nile's guitar makes for a unique sound that's irresistibly music to my ears!
Boy,this one was overlooked!!!.......2002-01-09
We all know that Nile rodgers is formally of the band Chic and we all know that he has produced some really Big named people in the music business and also played on a lot of famous people on their albums or should I say CD's and he also has done movie sound tracks also. Not bad for a guy that's trying to get his record label off the ground.
But how could we over look this gem of an offering that he put out in 85. Oh! I know how because, we were too busy paying too much attention with his bringing out BIG records from Madonna, David Bowie, and Diana Ross that we over looked his album?CD.
from this CD came a few hits like "Let's go out Tonight,Wavelength, and Stay out of the light" but if you really want to hear a good dance CD that has some pretty cool beats check this ont out because, If it came from nile then you know it has to be some kind of funk that will make you move.

Best Album Ever (to me).......2000-08-17
I liked Weston before i got this, and it made them my absolute most favorite band. "Matinee" and its segue into "In April Sometime" make them 2 of my most favorite songs ever. they always give me chills, and no matter what is wrong with my life, this record makes me see the happiness that lies sometimes just below the surface. the only thing better than this album is Weston live.
Weston: music from the soundtrack Matinee.......1998-08-24
Pennsylvania's Weston deliver a superb indie rock effort with 'Matinee.' From the opening note of "Opening Chord" to the unique fade-out of "Radio," Weston ruminate on indie rock, girls, indie rock, and, well....girls. If pressed for a specific style I suppose "power-pop" would work. The songs are melodic yet they still rock. 'Matinee' showcases Weston's chief strength: their vocal harmonies. The melancholic "Uninspiring" and "Lonely When I'm With You" are a welcome contrast to more upbeat numbers like "Record Shop" and "Next To You At Night." "Indie Rock Star" is definitive Weston: clever lyrics, melodic guitars, strong vocals, and a catchy chorus that will bounce around inside your head for hours. A great song from a great album.
By far the best CD they have put out, heart felt and rockin.......1998-06-24
Much like Jawbreaker but "poppier" but more songs about girls. This is probably the best album they have out, the song about the radio is great, as is the first track. Makes you feel great about that certain someone in your life

Extraordinary!!.......2005-09-02
Amanda McBroom is so hard to find here in my home country. Her discs are mostly only available at Hi-Fi specialty shops here where they are used to test hi-fi equipment and to show off how good the equipment (or is the album?) sounds. That was where I first heard her songs from the album "Dreaming".
"Midnight Matinee" is no exception as again the quality of audio is flawless. Amanda's songs are so good and her voice crystal clear that it is no wonder why her albums are used as test discs. The opening song "Crimes of the heart" starts the album off and you immediately realise that this is going to be another one superb outing from Amanda. I am also immediately taken in by "Make me a kite" where her vocals float, rolls and flies off with the music. The rest of the songs equally shows off her prowess and skills as an amazing vocalist.
There really is no equal to Amanda and her vocals and music on this album are exquisite, beautiful and textually rich. This is a vocalist like no other and it is amazing how little publicity she gets. Treasure this!

PROVING THAT JAMMING ISN'T BORING........2006-02-27
Thank goodness for this example of jamming that doesn't meander, go on endlessly and with two guitarists that really know how to play off each other. This is great from start to finish. It has the sort of attack that the Allmans had. My only gripe is that the singing is pretty monotone (why do all the bands sing like Bob Weir?) and reminds me of the dreaded Dead. Like Moe the Ominous seapods have found the art of making a nine minute plus track interesting. I read comparisons with Phish-don't let that put you off-i think they're closer to Moe but at the end of the day they're a seventies derivative rock band who can play and hats off to them for that!
Three and a half stars!.......1999-09-10
Although I have not seen the Seapods live nor have I heard any of their other recordings (both of which help one to appreciate a band's sound), I do enjoy popping in "Matinee Idols" from time to time. The 'Pods are fair songwriters - the transitions in their work are far from seamless, the lyrics lack coherence and color, and the melodies are not quite realized. They are much stronger within the jam, but even in the hottest jams on this CD it's clear that their chops, even when pushed to the maximum, fail to lift their music into the swirling, colorful jam-soup that endears lovers of jam bands to that music. All in all, a good effort, but, in my humble opinion, not worth the new price. If you can find this in a used CD store (good luck!) I would go that route.
Jam, Jam, Jam!.......1999-08-10
I first heard the SeaPods on LA public radio station KPFK's show "The Music Never Stops." This is my first SeaPods CD and it just rocks like nothing else. The CD starts out jammin'and just gets better and better. Some of it is wacky, some of it is really thought-provoking. When was the last time you heard someone sing about John Henry? The SeaPods are so original! Be sure you send in the coupon inside the CD for the free live CD, too. It's almost as good as Matinee Idols.
EXTRAORDINARY JAMMING MUSIC.......1999-07-12
This disc is GHETTO NASTY!!!.......1999-02-22
If you havn't heard the Seapods yet, get this disc. The Seapods are obviously one of the best live acts out there, and "Matinee Idols" supports this statement.
