The Greatest Offering.......2004-06-09
This EP from the opening guitar chord is amazing. The EP is entirely acoustic with their mix of Alternative and Psychedelic rock and Folk. Again, the band delivers a stellar performance and truely show themselves with a passion. The acoustic set truely unites you with the band and the melodies and harmonies are beautiful. "Mother" is a standout with it's energetic feel, chants, and hand drum solo. "Last One" is a great remix of the original from their debut album and the covers "Dun Ringill" and "Wooden Ships" are mind-blowing. This collection of songs could be the very best of their entire career.
Peace,
Ben.
Animal Bag at their best.......2003-06-27
While touring in the summer of 1993, Animal Bag sat down in the home of a friend (the back cover says the album was "recorded in Ron's living room" in Hollywood) to record this quite impressive EP of seven songs. Their self-named debut album from fall of 1992 established this band as one of the great new talents of the decade, yet for whatever reason the instant fame they deserved never seemed to come. Ironically, this EP that truly shows the talent of these guys as musicians also serves as their swan's song of sorts. Their first album featured a lot of pretty heavy rocking, with incredibly powerful lyrics always rising above the fevered jamming. Offering, in contrast, is a much more subdued set of tracks that really do have the type of sound you might expect to hear if you suddenly asked the band to sit down at a party and play a few songs. There is much more than heavy guitar and drums to Animal Bag's music; it actually possesses an almost ethereal quality at times, especially on the final, basically instrumental track Moment. Each of these tracks is strikingly different from what you might expect from this group. They are almost calming in a sense, and lead singer Luke Edwards' unique voice can at times become almost hypnotically mesmerizing. Offering proves that Animal Bag had more than enough talent to make it big. Their songs really meant something, they connected with listeners in ways most rock bands simply cannot do. It's a pity that more people have never had a chance to listen to the music this great band released in the early 1990s.

Get their earlier vinyl releases... this album is blah........2006-07-31
It was such a downer when this CD came out after the last two EP releases on Dumb-Unit and Festplatten. Some bands start out raw and weak then progress, here I think The Uncut did just the opposite. Actually, their earlier material was rather raw and minimal (very similar to early New Order both in guitar work and vocal delivery). If you can find a way to buy or download their "Understanding The New Violence" vinyl EP or the "Devotion/Fluent And Pure/Over The Edge" EP, please do for they indeed rock! Certainly their earlier sound is evident in the track "Understanding the New Violence," so if you like how that song sounds, go for the earlier material by this band that had a lot of potential before muddying things up.
Better than bad. .......2005-12-30
I was going to tell myself not to compare this band to Interpol. But I just can't help myself. The best song on this album is Understanding the New Violence. The reason it is the best song is because it sounds most like Interpol. The rest of this album sounds like a up and coming band hoping one day to open for the bigger and better Interpol. I do enjoy this album however. It is not as hipnotic as Interpol, but it is good. There are some high points. Alot of it is very bland however. Its really had to explain. I would recommend this for any fan of Interpol. Its worth a listen. I will be very interested if they can follow this up with something great. I can tell they have great things to come.
Repetitive, good 'background music'.......2005-04-01
I bought this cd after hearing the second half of 'understanding the new volience' on TV (yes, Muchmusic does play indie bands on it's network every leap year)and purchased the album thinking it would be more driven by guitar riffs. The problem is that it tends to be a bit repetitive (especially the single)and it straddles that uneasy fence between 'pop dance music sound' and rock. Also, the vocalists style of muttering the lyrics as opposed to singing them also adds to the cd's misgivings. If you're into the types of bands that make up the bulk of Paperbag Records artists than you won't be disappointed, but for those of want a more harder and complex rock album look elsewhere.

Post-punk, apparently.......2005-02-11
There are no other reviews of this album, which is a shame because that likely means nobody else is buying it, which is a shame because that likely means nobody else is listening to it. Comparisons: let's see... Amazon says that people who looked at this also looked at bands like !!!, Death From Above 1979, and Ambulance LTD (as well as others that I have no frame of reference for). Those people are likely to be disappointed. Another website lists Interpol, Joy Division, and And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead. That's closer. I would also posit references to the new dance-rock craze that's going around now (ie, Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, etc). But less explicity dance, more "Just guitars, please." Also, singer Ian Worang isn't quite singing, but neither is he mumbling or talking; he's just unconcerned about making his vocals the center of the songs. It works really well, giving it a bit of a subdued feeling. Anyways, I was hooked after hearing track 2, Understanding the New Violence. This is practically the only thing I've listened to for the last month, and I'm still hooked. I don't give glowing reviews of much, but I LOVE Uncut.

One of the few times "criminally ignored" really applies........2003-03-10
If released today, this album might be a moderate success. Back in 1993, there was little airplay for anything this heavy on mainstream radio. Since Stick lacked the cliched themes of suicide and gore film-style violence, it had no appeal to the niche "Metal" market; Pantera was as "alternative" as most metalheads got back then.
To make things worse, the promotional responsibilities for this Lawrence, Kansas band fell into the hands of the folks at Arista -- the very same ones in fact who managed the account of Ace of Base. The most I ever saw in terms of promotional material was an ad in Tower Records' free "Pulse" magazine, with the tagline "It is what it is, 'cause it is what it should be." That may have been the case, but it didn't tell potential listeners a thing about the band or its sound. After one over-produced video that aired maybe once on MTV's "Headbangers' Ball", Stick quietly disappeared off the musical radar screen.
So what DOES Stick sound like? Comparisons could be made to Helmet, Korn, and especially Clutch, mainly because Stick employs a similar "drop-D" tuning, giving their instruments a heavier sound, since superseded by today's "Nu metal". The All Music Guide wants to label them "grunge", and I guess that is fairly accurate, even though I've never understood what that term means. It simply serves as a convenient catchall for describing the sound of rock being reborn in the early 90s, with Seattle bands leading the charge. Anyway... the album opener, "Grind", launches with a multiple-octave wall of distorted guitar and doesn't let up from there. "No Groovy" was, I believe, chosen as the first single, which was a mistake -- it's a good song, but the slower tempo is not as immediately enticing as some other tracks. "Stoning" and "Disposable", tracks 3 and 4, are simultaneously the most punishing and the most accessible. Throughout the album, the guitars are heavily layered, the chords are better than run-of the mill (slightly dissonant, but not as jazzy as Helmet), and Darrel Brannock's bass playing is understated, yet adds subtly to the bleak feeling. These guys were more musically creative than the majority of the heavy bands out there today. Stick is angry, intense music that is perfect for "moshing" and requires the volume cranked all the way up.
Stick was a racially diverse group, and the lyrics are amazingly socially conscious. These guys are clearly "p.o.ed" (I can say that on Amazon.com, can't I?) at society, particularly big corporations; no doubt BMG, parent of Arista, has since joined their list. "No Groovy" and "Conditional" are full frontal attacks on apathy, "Grind" and "Taught to Lose" are written from the viewpoint of the downtrodden and oppressed, "Zero" is an interesting take on a minority's point of view on American society, and "Fuel" deals with (on one level anyway) alternative energy sources. I can't think of another vocalist to compare to Mark Smirl. He's a bit nasal and doesn't have a huge range, but he stays on key and gets his message across, all without obnoxious screaming. In some ways, he sounds a bit like the lead singer for Paw, another Kansas band. Come to think of it, if you like Paw's "Dragline", you will almost certainly like "Heavy Bag". Sadly not included here is the ultra heavy, anti-racist single "Resistance", found only on 7" vinyl. Pick it up if you can find it; the B-side features a cover of Henry Rollins' "Drinking and Driving".
This CD appears to be out of print, and will probably never be reissued. If you can get it used for cheap, I highly recommend it. The members of Stick have formed or joined other bands since the mid-90s, but there is also a rumor that a second album was released independently, apparently titled "Disgruntled X-Employee". I have never seen it anywhere.

Customer Reviews:
A Progressive band of the 90's.......2004-06-09
Animal Bag is an amazing band of many sorts. Their debut offers us a comprehensive glimpse at their creative genius. They were a band that stood solid upon Alternative and Psychedelic/Progressive rock, Folk, and even Tribal/World influences. Luke Edward's vocals and lyrics are incredible and always unique and the band mesmorizingly flowed between Alternative rock, to a psychedelic ballad, and on to an acoustic anthem with hand drums. There was never anything else like this band and they still lack the attention that they have always deserved. Rest in Peace Boo, and thank you for your great drumming with Animal Bag.
Peace,
Ben.
One of the best unknown rock bands of the early 90s.......2003-06-19
Animal Bag is truly one of the great hard rocks bands of the early 1990s, somewhat neglected in their heyday and all but forgotten today. These guys knew how to rock, and they had their own distinctive style that separated them from the great mass of bands trying to make it in the business. They did enjoy some success with this first album, though. Fans of the show My So-Called Life may remember their appearance as, of all things, a rock band, on that show's very first episode. I have a special connection of sorts with Animal Bag; while I never met any of the members, I know that the lead singer, Luke Edwards, went to high school in my own home town of Shelby, North Carolina. These guys got a good bit of radio play around my parts, at least on the stations that played bona fide rock music, but since they were a local band I don't really know how much air time they got nationwide. Suffice it to say, they didn't get as much attention as they deserved. Their songs boast powerful, fully intelligible lyrics that really seem to say something about a number of topics. Cheerful Mary in the Rain, for example, is rather a touching song about a father's love for his little girl. Hello Cosmo was their most successful and recognizable tune, one that typifies their distinctive style. The title actually befits the band, as there was always something a little cosmic about Animal Bag's music.
For the record, the full hour's worth of songs featured on this excellent CD are:
Darker Days
Hello Cosmo
Missing Out
Cheerful Mary in the Rain
Moon Song
Hate St.
Personal Demons
Mirrored Shades
Everybody
Another Hat
Oddball
City Song
Last One
For the most part, Animal Bag delivers some amazing tunes of varied and interesting musical stylings. Mirrored Shades, for example, features an acoustic sound throughout, but you won't find anything that calm in standouts tunes like Darker Days or Everybody. The only track I don't particularly care for is Hate St., a song with lyrics I find rather pointless. Animal Bag turns immediately around, though, and accomplishes great things with the very next track Personal Demons; this song features a number of interesting musical transitions, rocking for almost seven minutes while communicating some rather meaningful ideas. Animal Bag doesn't scream at you (well, not often, anyway); their words speak volumes and sometimes, they get right inside your head, man. It's too bad that, for whatever reason, Animal Bag didn't get more attention and put out more great albums during the 90s; the only other Animal Bag recording I know about is an EP released a couple of years after this album. I also believe that the drummer, Boo, passed away of natural causes not long ago; I and those others out there who were fortunate enough to be introduced to Animal Bag's music will not soon forget him or the rest of the band members because, however limited their success, they knew how to rock with the best of them.
