The first full-length in four years from 28-year-old post-techno electronic musician Richie Hawtin under his Plastikman alias, Consumed has more going on underneath its cool, minimal surface than first meets the ears. Contrasting pretty heavily with previous Plastikman efforts, Consumed is a slowly evolving, serious work of tranced out microgrooves with deliberately paced, almost textural changes in synth washes and percussive sounds. Neither ambient nor techno, but existing in a delicate, contemporary space between, Consumed reminds one of a less harsh-sounding Porter Ricks or a sedated Mouse on Mars with an even heavier Kraftwerk fetish. The music has a serious metronomic thing going on, but it foregoes traditional beat tyrannies and bowel-rattling buzz bass in favor of an altogether more ethereal, subsonic groove. It's delightful. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars a dark turn for the king of acid.......2007-04-25

Get consumed.

And I don't just mean get the cd. This is a dark, atmospheric album; gone are the 303's of plastikman past. The basis for many of these tracks is bass bass and more bass; synths float over the darkness like will'o'wisps(for a surreal otherworldly experience, listen to this album through a good pair of sealed full-size headphones).

I don't recommend this album for someone who's just starting off with their plastikman experience (it may turn them off; it's very very dark). It is an amazing album, and an incredible addition to the fantastic catalog of the master that is Richie Hawtin.

5 out of 5 stars dark? er, are you sure mate?.......2007-04-02

i love this album, i put it on for yoga, train commutes, housework, the lot. some of it is melancholy, yes, but some of it i find really uplifting and spacious - easy on the ear even. i guess you have to appreciate minimal ambient type techno-ish stuff to like it.

5 out of 5 stars Even better than Closer.......2006-11-01

this is easily the best Plastikman CD. Contain is an absolute masterpiece. The deep, deep bass will make your heart palpitate. Funny how themain amazon reviewer says this "Foregoes rattling buzz bass." Doesn't seem to to me, if anything this is Hawtin's bassiest CD ever. Just listen to that throb on "Locomotive," or "In Side."

Music seems like it would go well with 2001: A Space Oddyssey, and that's not just because of the packaging.

4 out of 5 stars Ambient Techno.......2006-02-15

While this album is rather different from Richie Hawtin's earlier Acid Techno work, this album carries a brooding tone that makes for a vast amount of atmosphere.

For me, this album is something that can only be listened to from time to time. However, this album carries a lot of significance in the realm of techno, and is something that should be listened to by anyone who is trying to get a feel for the varieties of techno out there.

4 out of 5 stars Laid back.......2004-05-16

This whole album is nothing but undertones. This album is very quiet (if you listen to it you'll understand). It is not %100 ambient. I wouldn't even know how to describe it because I have heard nothing like it other than his other album, Artifakts(although a little louder). I listen to this when I want some background noise, ie sleeping and working.

I hope my brief review didn't sound negative, because I do like this album.

(this is the same review that I gave Artifakts)

5 out of 5 stars Hooked from the start.......2007-04-02

This album is a death metal/death core must have. from the intense opening riff of Compelled To Copulate you will be hooked. The band uses pig squeals like it is their job. the vocals are one of the best parts of the album however.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Debut.......2007-02-06

In 2002, a Canadian band that fused together technical death metal and hardcore released their debut album "Consumed By Your Poison". However, it was only released in Canada via Galy Records. Four years later, after the enjoyment of DI's 2005 sophomore album, "The Healing Process", Century Media gives a treat across the world with the re-release of this great album.

This album has a different vocalist, and the vocal style may be kind of weird at first, but it will grow on you. The musical structure is similar to the band's country natives Gorguts and Cryptopsy, using the technical structure for their songs. With addicting songs like "Compel to Copulate", "Grade A-One" and "Poissonnariat", it's sure to please the ears.

Also, we have 2 re-recorded versions of "Compel to Copulate" and "Poisonnariat", which feature the band's current vocalist. Personally, I enjoy the first versions better, but you can see once you listen to this.

3 out of 5 stars Not great, not bad.......2006-07-20

Not much to say about this band, they sound like a less technical NSV-era Cryptopsy. It's nothing incredible, but might want to check a few songs out.

4 out of 5 stars Very close to 5 stars.......2004-09-16

It's Strung Out in the early days without the extrem speed, and with a brittish singer who will blow you away. Where Breakfast at Pappa's is somewhat poppier, this is harder, faster, and more thought trough. It's a little bit better than Pistols at Dawn, which had some very slow songs. Sunnyside up, King Kong Song is the best Consumed songs ever.

    4 out of 5 stars Rock........2002-05-27

Ok, so it's Fat punk. But if you're one of those people who pigeonhole bands by the label they're on, then you'll be missing out on one of the best albums of 1999. Consumed is a four piece from England, and these boys sure know how to rock across the Atlantic.

The album kicks off with "Sunnyside Up," your basic super-fast melodic punk anthem, just the right thing to get you into the "punk" mindset. The band isn't afraid to stray into dissonance, though, as shown on "King Kong Song." The way the bass line rubs against the guitar line in the pre-chorus is frankly genius, and it gets the average listener saying "Why won't the damn bassist play the right note?" The guitarwork overall on this album is nothing short of spectacular. These guys know how to write some catchy-as-all-hell riffs, and they have enough talent to be able to play them fast. REALLY fast. The drumming is your basic "bass-snare-bass bass-snare" patterns for the most part, but the drummer keeps time very well, and the fills accent with the rest of the band, a skill that is lacking in a lot of punk bands nowadays. Then we come to the singer. His voice has just that right amount of urgency that makes you take note of his frantic vocals. The lyrics are not that amazing by themselves, but it's all in the delivery, in my opinion. This guy could make "Row, Row, Row Your Boat" sound good. Plus, they succeed in the most vital aspect of punk:

No song is over three minutes long (except "King Kong Song, which is 3:08). This is half the reason that this band rocks so hard. Even if there's a song you don't like, it's almost over before you hit the "skip" button. This is by far the best band on Fat (save No Use For A Name), and you'd be a fool not to check them out.

4 out of 5 stars It's cool, but not really worth the new price.......2001-07-31

This cd, in my opinion, is mediocre. There are a few bands that sound like Consumed (Millencolin and No Use For a Name being a couple of the best) but this cd doesn't really stand out from the crowd as much as I hoped. I'm not saying the cd sucks or anything, there a few standout songs like "Wake Up With a Smile" which is freaking awesome, "Chop Suicide", "King Kong Song", and "Something to Do" which will work you up into a frenzy if you let it. Put simply, these guys are fast, driving, sort of melodic punk that is well worth a listen. I'd find it used if you can, well worth 5 or 8 bucks. Check out No Use For A Name if you like this kind of punk, they'll knock your socks off.

5 out of 5 stars Best Consumed album.......2005-09-11

After "Hit for Six" was released, I was hooked on this band. They released demo versions a few of these songs on their website, but they never made any mention of when the album came out (or why it wasn't released on Fat Wreck Chords, their previous label). They broke up, their website went down, and here I was with a few demos and no full length album. I heard in passing that they put out an album called "Pistols at Dawn", and after a little searching, I found it. I'm kind of glad I had to wait so long. I had always wanted these guys to put out some new material, and now I finally have it two and a half years after it was released, and it's brand new to me. The mix on "Pistols" is far better than anything they've done before, and the songwriting is equally enjoyable. A little different than previous work, yet so much they same, Consumed throws out catchy choruses similar to Sum 41 or Jimmy Eat World, then immediately shifts directions to their trademark dual guitar work and snippy drum beats. This is without a doubt a must-buy for anyone interested in good, hard punk with a touch of pop.

5 out of 5 stars Definately Worth Buying.......2003-12-26

This cd just never gets old. I've been listening to it nonstop since I got it. And everytime I notice something new. The last track of this cd is actually a remix of one of their song's from the Breakfast at Poppa's cd called "Heavy Metal Winner". They re-did the song on synthesizers and totally changed it, it's pretty neat. I recommend buying this cd along with their other two. (Hit For Six and Breakfast at Poppa's) I just bought all three of them used all at once. With shipping it was less than 20 bucks. This is cd is worth your money and then some.... enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Great Punk Rock.......2003-06-13

This is great punk rock. The vocal is excellent, not whiny like most pop-punk bands and the melodies ain't trite like those new punk bands. The melodies are very very cool sounding, the guitars are great, and the whole album just sounds heavy, melodic, and awesome, definitely a great new punk release along with Sing the Sorrow by AFI.

I've collected music for over 25 years and own thousands of titles. I've heard many "first" albums. The great thing about this CD is the sincerity of the lyrics as well as the variety of music.

I popped this in my car CD player the day I got it and listened to it twice in row (I hardly ever do that with a new CD). This CD just "plays" well all the way through.

            An excellent CD!
