My husband and I buy many Italian CDs so we think we have good judgement after so many purchases. We were somewhat disappointed in this CD. Every song has the same instrumentation and basically sounds the same. We wonder even if the mandolins are "live" or just canned, they sound so tinny and the same each song. This CD could have used more feeling, romance, whatever...possible had there been some sensitive arrangements with solos, etc. Instead, it was the same bunch of mandolin sounds which made for a very boring CD, in our opinion. A few vocals would have helped the monotony, too. Would not recommend.

This is a great album of really very traditional Italian music. It is not anglicised but just like you hear when you go to Italian festas.

Excellent....Perfect! We recently had an Italian themed dinner party and needed just the right instrumental background/mood music. Mandolins from Italy was perfect. We also needed it FAST. Althought shipping was not cheap, we received it on time and made our party a hit.

I love this music. It takes me back to my childhood when my Dad played the mandolin and my uncle accompanied him on guitar. Some old Italian melodies and some new ones to sing along with. Very nice.

As with their first collection of label highlights, Hyperion's new two-disc collection provides a broad sampling of their exceptional catalogue and performers. Particularly rewarding are the selections from Beethoven (Scherzo from String Trio in C minor, op 9 no 3, performed by the Leopold Trio) and Thomas Tallis (Salvator mundi I, performed by the Winchester Cathedral Choir), but experienced and novice listeners alike will find much to enjoy on these discs. It's also a good value--more than 2 1/2 hours of music for less than $10.

    The music is excellent, with high quality sound. Not irritating as some classical music can be. Plus the tempo's are varied which is great depending if you need something fast paced or more slow. Best of all, the kids enjoyed it!

    How to gently insert a little culture into the grandkids' lives without Mom freaking out.....send this set of CDs for Christmas. Dad's into heavy metal and Mom, although she has a long history of listening to Classical music as a child, is now into Country. Nothing wrong with that, but how are the three little ones going to hear any of the Classics with Grandma living more than 600 miles away? "Play this in the background while they're having creative time," said I, "and see if they don't enjoy it." When I talked with them a week later the 4 year old couldn't wait to tell me how much he liked the "playtime music" I'd sent him. The quality of the recording is good and the variety of rhythms and tempos make it interesting. Yes they're a little trite and you're going to have to explain that the theme to "the Bad News Bears" really is Classical, but that's okay. If they skipped the genius of Mozart as an infant, or even if they teethed to "the Magic Flute", these CDs will give them a taste of a variety of good music and who knows how far into the Classical realm it may send them as they mature?

    The word "fabulous" seems vulgar when applied to the Spanish diva whose delicately shaded voice encompassed music from the middle ages to the present. This four-disc compilation emphasizes her song repertoire, to which she brought warmth, intelligence, linguistic integrity and irresistible sincerity. Her dignity makes listeners want to come to her, and she rewards them with an intimate, personal experience, especially in this small-scale repertoire by Ravel, Debussy, Duparc, Fauré, lots of Spanish composers and German masters such as Schubert and Brahms. --David Patrick Stearns

    This 4-CD set is a tribute to the concert career of the great Victoria de Los Angeles. The first 3 CDs show her totally at home in the art song of France and of her native Spain. In the French art songs, her silvery, creamy tone, her legendary legato and her perfect French diction make for wonderful and unforgettable performances. These include a sensual Scheherazade, magnificient singing in the Duparc songs and a phenomenal Poeme de L'amour et de la mer of Chausson (try to keep your eyes dry by the end of La mort de l'amour). In the Chausson, while de Los Angeles does not opt for the intensely Wagnerian approach, her sensitive singing more than does justice to the poetry and the feelings of the character. The Spanish songs showcase de Los Angeles at her most natural, flamboyant and attractive singing. The tunes are catchy, full of bouncy rhythms and De Los Angeles's fabulous voice never ceases to amaze. The 4th CD shows the wonderful chemistry between de Los angeles and the great Gerald Moore. While she does not erase memories of Fischer-Dieskau and Schwarzkopf in the Schubert selections, the Brahms songs are excellent and her Faure songs here are earth shaking in their elegance and refinement. The Italian and the famous Handel aria helps to prove De Los Angeles's reputation as an excellent bel canto singer. Her duets with Fischer-Dieskau are absolutely memorable and gorgeous.
    The set comes with booklet including full words plus translations, helpful notes on De Los Angeles's concert career and a dozen of beautiful and rare black and white photos. Victoria de Los Angeles's concert career was as prolific as her legendary operatic performances and continued well after her retirement from the operatic stage. This introspective and almost encycopledic release is a real treat and is absolutely recommended. I totally agree with the editor's review who states that the word "fabulous" fails in every respect to fully capture the artistry of the Spanish soprano. Victoria de Los Angeles is definitely one of the most wonderful lyric sopranos of the 20th century and is one of the most heavenly artists to have ever graced the concert scene. A must-have for any collection.

    The album is a marvelous sampling of this great singer's artistry. Her performances of the French and Spanish composers are something special. The De Falla "Seven Popular Folksongs" are powerful, passionate; the last song, "Jota," raised the hair on the back of my neck.

    I was delighted to see Faure's "Claire de lune" on the album, and equally delighted with De Los Angeles' elegant rendition of this work. The only recording of the song I've liked better is from an LP featuring Frederika Von Stade.

    As an added bonus, several duets with the great baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau are featured on Disk #4. These include some charming settings of Irish songs by Beethoven, and a gorgeous arrangement of "Let Us Wander" by Henry Purcell. I remember hearing these duets years ago on an LP recording, and it was a pleasure to hear them again.

        Here is a welcome to a "Nostalgia" series by Naxos, and a welcome into the 21st Century to the great Irish tenor John McCormack. Younger shoppers may not be familiar with this remarkable singer who once rivalled Caruso in the recording popularity stakes. Blessed with the naturally beautiful voice and the secure breath control that any singer might envy, McCormack had the additional ability to communicate directly and memorably and vividly. He polished and perfected his inimitably Irish diction until he felt confident that every listener in the largest auditorium could hear and understand every word. Feeling he had no flair for foreign languages or for acting, he retired early from the operatic stage, but not before he had made recordings of several Mozart and Handel arias that have remained models ever since. Some of his recordings of lieder by Hugo Wolf, moreover, can still send shivers down the spine.

        This CD of "Favourites" provides songs he recorded between 1912 and 1940. The sentiments may be passé (patriotism, nostalgia, piety, the praise of women and the sorrow of parting) but the sincerity and charm transcend fashion. There is also an interpreter's magic evident in the dramatic monologue "Kathleeen Mavourneen" and the jaunty recounting of what happened in "The Garden Where the Praties Grow" that is spell-binding.

        Indian film music may sound derivative and strange at first to western ears, but repeated listenings will reveal that it's a unique genre in and of itself. It incorporates Indian musical structures (1/4 tones, etc), western musical idioms, and sometimes Asian and African rhythms. The singing is strikingly rich and beautiful, and will have you singing along without having a clue what the words are.

        This CD is notable because it includes a very famous Indian film song: "Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu" (track #2) or "My name is Chin Chin Chu." It's about as catchy as a song can be. When I meet someone from India they almost always know the song and are very surprised that I (being very non-Indian) have heard it. They always ask "How do you know that song?" I tell them that I have a CD that includes it (obviously, this one).

        The songs on this CD represent some of the best of Indian film music from approximately the 1960s. The sound quality is less than perfect, but more than listenable. Since nearly all Indian films are musicals (complete with intricate accompanying dance numbers), all of these songs have been wrenched out of context (but unless you speak some of the various languages represented here, you probably won't be bothered). What you will find are interesting and singable melodies, incredible rhythms, breathtaking singing, and 21 reasons to madly dance around the room.

        The CD case has a gatefold with pictures from some Indian movies, as well as a list of the movies the songs were taken from. There's not much more information, so listeners are left to themselves to find more context for this music. Not that you need it to enjoy the music, it speaks for itself, however, the lack of information does leave the western listener in somewhat of a vaccuum as to the where and why of the music.

        This CD and the first volume of the series are great sources for being introduced to this unique music form. It's all enormously entertaining, and while you're at it, see if local video stores carry any Indian films and rent them. This will complete the experience and give the music on this CD a new perspective.

        Here's a great collection of classic Bollywood songs. Most have 1960s or 1970s production values, but they sound like nothing in the western hemisphere ("Bollywood strings" appear in abundance). With a mixture of traditional Indian rhythms, instrumentation, vocal styles, languages, and classic western rock (with some english phrases thrown in here and there) the songs take on a style all their own. Most of the melodies will stick fast and forever to even the most musically insensitve brains. Likewise, the infectious rhythms will inspire the indolent to flail spastically. This is nothing short of adventurous party music.

        These songs come directly from Indian movies. So, in a way, they lack their original context. This explains some of the speaking and the - what may seem like - bizarre interludes. Some of the sense is lost without the context, but the music suffers not one iota. Plus, without knowledge of the languages sung, many won't miss a thing around the context. Nonetheless, hopefully the music will inspire the desire to see the original Indian movies.

        This disc also contains "Jan Pahechan Ho" featured at the beginning of the movie "Ghost World" (that also included clips from the original Bollywood movie). Many have been introduced to Bollywood through this song and this movie. But this one song represents only a small peek into the immense and fascinating world of Indian popular music. Keep exploring.

        Musician? D.J.? Acid, Mixman, Reason user? This album is gold. Lots of sounds to chop up and use to further your creativity. Sound quality is pretty rough; something tells me the recording sesion featured a vcr, tv and a microphone. Will take some tweeking to kill the ear piercing highs. Other than that, buy today and sample away...

        I admitt the sound quality is horrible, but I have honestly never laughed so hard in my life. I heard this at a friend's house, so I don't remember exactly which tracks were funny. All I can say is that if you find humor in the utterly bizarre and incomprehensible world of Indian pop culture, you must buy this CD.
        Don't buy this if you are looking for serious stuff like Ravi Shankar or Trilok Gurtu. This is first and foremost a comedy album (at least from an American point of view). There are also, however, some amazing and beatiful songs on here hidden among the wierdness. I have heard many comedy cd's from Adam Sandler to Tenacious D. I guess that stuff is pretty funny, but, believe me, it is not even close to Doob doob o' rama . I don't think this is necessarily supposed to be funny, but all I can say is that I literally almost laughed myself into the emergency room. Trust me: if you pride yourself on having a good sense of humor, get this immediately

        If you like screechy Indian pop music you'll love this. These are fun Indian movie theme songs, many in a James Bond/sixties/spy/thriller type of theme or fake westerns. It's lots of fun but the sound quality is HORRIBLE, which is especially evident when played loud.
