AVAIL ABLE ESSENTIALS (get it? it's a pun!).......2005-02-15
it's funny how all these reviews are like 'one wrench' is not as good as 'over the james'. i remember when 'over the james' came out and everyone was like it's not as good as '4am friday'. why can't anyone just appreciate each as a good album that doesn't need to be ranked? can't we be happy that they have made 3 great albums for us. get all three! and if you like them get 'dixie'. you can live w/out 'satiate' which has it's moments and i don't know i kinda did not like 'front porch stories'. but hey i didn't like it but i still think avail is great and am glad they've given me 4 albums i love. oh man this review isn't nearly as good as the review i wrote for 'over the james'.
GREAT!.......2003-08-19
I have been an AVAIL fan for about 10 years now, and I must say to everyone else that is comparing this album to Over The James..... This album is different. Period. Each album that AVAIL puts out has the same flow to it, just with a different style. You can not compare one album to the next. So in that case One Wrench is one amazing and awesome album that has perfect hooks and grabs you right away. Never has a band been able to pull off what AVAIL pulls off on a daily basis. Of course this compares not to their awesome live performance!
ok.......2002-06-06
I love Avail and have all of their albumns. This one is one of the better produced cds. However it falls short of "Over the James". That is not an insult it is worth buying, but it isn't their best.
Impressive hardcore album.......2001-08-03
I should first point out that I'm not a fan of hardcore music. Both of my brothers love the stuff, but it just doesn't grab me. The one exception has been Avail. I think it's the vocals more than anything that made the difference. The singer has more range and melody than the shouting and yelling that I normally hear in this type of music. It also has a real energy to it. It's not as good as their last album, Over the James, but is still a really good hardcore album.
Great Songs, so-so execution.......2001-04-14
Let me preface this one by saying that I absolutely love Avail. They are by far one of my favorite bands. The songs on this album are just what any Avail fan would want and expect. I really liked the song compositions and the lyrics. If I were to start a band again, this is the style I'd go for. There is so much energy and emotion wrapped into every song. So if you like Avail, by this album now. Definitely see the band live. They are outstanding live! Okay, now let me tell you why I gave it only 3 stars. "Over the James" was an incredible album. The sound and execution were killer. On this effort the band went econo and did everything in one session. "OTJ" just set the benchmark too high and this one just doesn't live up to it. There are too many times when the mix just turns to shizzit. The sound is not as clean as "OTJ" and it gets fuzzy sometimes. At times the drums will be high in the mix and then all of the sudden disappear. Which brings me to the point that the band sorely misses Erik Larson. Erik was a perfect fit for this band. Ed is okay, but he just isn't at the same level ability wise. I never liked Erik's drum sound all that much, but I was praying for it on this album. The kit sound was weak. Man I hate dissing this record. I really hope that on the next record the band at least takes another session to get the right sounds and then spends a bit longer on the final mix. Keep playing Avail. The music world needs you!

These guys are great but I think the only thing Christian about them is their label and the occasional religious graphic. I don't believe they're as original as they claim to be either. TFU has an uncanny resemblance to the band Botch, actually I think they're a direct rip off. Honestly I don't think that's a bad thing either.
Wicked Cool!.......2000-04-28
This cd rips! Flat out wicked. Guitar work is quite impressive and the drumming... Ugh. He's good... In fact... Incredibly fast and awesome. Vocals are quite interesting. Lyrics are great. Check this cd out. It's worth your 15 bucks!

Why do I write these reviews?.......2004-02-12
I am on a Roll today, finding all the odd balls that nobody has reviewed yet. Okay, get this: take the beautiful simplicity of chamber music from the London Sinfonietta; add some Rock-N-Roll rhythms with some wacky modern instrumentation, throw some of the songs off the beat just when you understand the melody, & use some strange titles like 'Yellow Pages', 'Adjustable Wrench', & 'Rust for Piano'...I think that will describe it. Some experts compare his style to the metric complexities of Stravinsky & the repeated formulae of Phillip Glass with the energy Madonna's dance music. Why isn't there a 'Listen to Samples' section? Okay, so you can't hear it for yourself. You will have to take my word on it...Bummer, it maybe out of print...never mind.
This is Michael Torke's (born in 1961 & growing up in Milwaukee, Wisc.) earliest & most original work, his later work is more mainstream but still has the some of the features of this very interesting musical experiment. If you find it, grab it.

Patience's Reward!.......2003-09-05
A wonderfully ecletic selection of Micheal Torke compositions, albeit hard-apparently-to find...except at The Jazz Classical & Opera Shop on 112th Street, New York City. Ordered the cd on Labor Day; it shipped September 2; and arrived in Colorado two days later. Thanks guys for the marvelous service! But more, thanks for "Bright Blue Music" and all the other scarce seections
of this neglected 20th-21st century American composer.
Innocuous Music for Dangerous Times.......2003-04-19
The 1980's are definitely over. Torke's obsessive party music doesn't speak to me, though I did feel a rush of nostalgia-laced recognition of the 80's when I listened to this disc.
"DECEMBER" is brilliant........1999-06-30
Michael Torke's "December" is a composition rich with the complexity of emotional and musical sophistication. It breathes deep feeling and artistry, is comprised of much orchestral innovation and is one of the most moving, exciting compositions I have ever heard. BRAVO.
michael torke's music is repetitive and boring........1999-03-30

The Young A. Holdsworth: From Fantastic to Revolutionary..., .......2006-10-04
Aside a curious Beatles-type cover, this recording presents a restless experimentation over a Jazzy rhythm based format that features a four men jazz combo that swings really hard into a fusion style at the end of sixties: sounds like a bebop/Free jazz fusion players with disonant harmonies and melodic voices on top by guitarist Allan Holdsworth, that is supported by Dave Freeman on Drums, Steven Robinson on guitar & vocals, and Mick Shelly on Bass. By the other side, the album features too, the first precedent of "Velvet Darkness", song that passed through different incarnations into different groups:
a) Golden Lakes (Igginbottom's Wrench, 1969)
b) Golden Lakes (The Things You See, 1976)
c) Shadows Of (Gazeuse!, 1976)
d) Velvet Darkness (Velvet Darkness, 1976).
Allan Holdsworth & friends recorded an outstanding album plenty of fusion passages that shows the early style and real essence of a revolutionary genious of guitar playing that became the monster that we already know...Highly recomended for the Holdsworth fan! ....Good Luck!
"Worth it.".......2002-09-17
Pun intended, this CD is worthwhile, but for Holdsworth addicts only, since there is indeed too much idle noodling from all the band members thoughout this early disc. This album was recorded before Allan Holdsworth had fully defined his sound and found his own unique voice on the guitar. This disc is mostly of historic value to the hardcore Jazz-fusion collector. I am a big fan of Allan and his I.O.U. project especially and found track 6: "Golden Lakes" the most accomplished composition in this set. His singing actually isn't too bad either.
His 1983 album "Road Games" was also re-released recently and that is a disc I highly reccomend, it is from his greatest creative period. Every song is flawlessly executed.
Jack Bruce and Jeff Berlin are feautured guests on "Road Games."
Igginbottom's Wrench.......2000-11-01
As an Allan Holdsworth fan, I was naturally eager to get my hands on this album especially for the fact that it is early Holdsworth as I also have an interest in the technical developement of his musical style. The music on this album may be a bit difficult to listen to for some fans of Holdsworth recent material but it's a must have for both serious collectors and Holdsworth fans. Take for instance the fact that Allan is the principle lead singer in the group. His voice is a natural and refreshing pure tone expression of his original musical thoughts and his pitch is quite good. The hardest thing for me to like on the record is the stark meatless tone of the guitars. They sound almost as if they were plugged directly into a characterless mixing console with no effects or helpful EQ. Despite this, the playing is extraordinary, with enough momentary gems to warrent the purchase of this piece of history.
What an amazing surprise!.......2000-10-12
Last week, the guitar player in my band (I play bass) handed me this
CD, saying, "check this out--it's the new Allan Holdsworth."
Now, he and I are both ardent fans of the brewer, so we were surprised
that he'd come out with another new album, so soon on the heels of the
marvelous "Sixteen Men of Tain." I asked him what he thought
of it, and he just grinned, "listen to it and tell me what you
think." I popped it in on the way home, and popped it back out
after 20 or 30 seconds, just to make sure he'd given me the right
CD--it didn't sound like any Holdsworth album I'd ever heard. It
wasn't polished or smooth, there was nothing resembling a Synthaxe (or
even a keyboard synth) on the songs, and most strikingly, the chord
progessions and solos didn't have anywhere near the virtuosic
complexity you find on every Holdsworth album since "IOU."
This sounded like a 60's band playing some kind of primitive
proto-prog/fusion! Now, I've got pretty much every available
Holdsworth album, from his days with Soft Machine to Tony Williams to
Gong to Bruford--I've even got "Velvet Darkness." "This
can't be an old album," I thought, "I'd have known about
it."
By the middle of the second song, I thought I had it
figured out. Knowing how Holdsworth and his friends like to drink
beer, I assumed that they had tossed back a few and then decided to
attempt a fictional take on a 60's band ("hey mates, what do you
think it would sound like if fusion hadn't started with 'Bitches
Brew'; what if it had been invented by a late 60's psychadelic band
from the north of England?" "Gear idea--let's try
it!").
After all, that sort of thing's been done
before--Utopia's "Deface the Music," XTC's two Dukes of the
Stratosphear albums. But while Utopia just parodied the Beatles, and
the Dukes lampooned as much 60's musical territory as they could (a
"Seeds-type" song, a "Pet Sounds-type" song, and
early Hollies sort of song, etc.), this sounded unified--like a real
band, at a specific moment in time. The instrumentation was basic:
vocals, two guitars, bass and drums. The songs weren't derivative of
anything or anyone in particular, beyond the Jack Bruce-sounding bass
player, the spacy lyrics and the oh-so psychadelic propensity to
meander. In fact, it sounded as if it had been recorded in a single
session--every song had the same guitar sounds, and even the same
panning placement.
My respect for Holdsworth increased (quite a
feat, as I already viewed him as the world's finest electric
guitarist), knowing that a guy noted for such unflinching,
self-critical perfectionism would release such a playful record--a
record with, God forbid, mistakes! I was amazed that he could hold his
playing in check that way. The solos have none of the polychromatic
eloquence he displays nowadays. They're fast, but they're also mostly
modal, and in some cases, pentatonic! More importantly, they display a
kind of fumbling grace, like someone of blinding talent who's only
just learning to play.
And this is what I love about this
album. Like the best of the 60's bands who folded jazz ideas into
their music (Spirit, for instance), Igginbottom is best listened to at
night. In fact, once I'd gotten home, I sat in my car and listened to
the whole CD in my driveway, completely enthralled. The playing has a
gentle, intelligent, introspective feel to it that I found
unbelievably endearing. The music on this album is, to me, filled with
the things that made 60's music cool. It has the "anything is
possible" vibe that infused Hendrix's best music. Holdsworth and
the other guitar player seem to relish the idea of each playing a
different chord at the same time, making a larger, more complex single
chord (later, of course, Holdsworth would figure out how to do that
all by himself!) That innocent, total lack of irony is also expressed
vocally, and the sweet-sounding tenor singing lead is, believe it or
not, Holdsworth himself! Who would've thought he could sing too? Now,
I wonder why he bothered to hire Paul Williams--nothing against
Williams's Jack Bruce-meets-Greg Lake style, but I think Holdsworth
sings circles around him. Of course, the context is everything; while
I couldn't imagine someone like Williams singing these songs, I
suppose "White Line" (on "IOU") would've sounded
silly with such pretty, earnest vocals as these.
Anyway, the next
day I checked out the liner notes, and lo and behold, realized that it
was, in fact, an old album: that a band of guys from the North of
England really did invent progressive rock/fusion! What do you
know--there goes my respect for Holdsworth, inching up yet again!
Milking it!.......2000-09-15
Don't buy this if you even remotely like Holdsworths current stuff. Sounds like an unrehearsed, below average 60's bar/cover band. Unfocused hippie vocals with unrelated guitar nuddeling. The poor recording quality doesn't help either. Somebody's really trying to make money on everything that can be dug up with Holdsworth on it. Sad. ...
