5 out of 5 stars The Music Behind The Grand Opera: Verdi Spectacular.......2005-10-04

This recording is a delight for fans of classical music. In opera, the singing/words/text is married to the music, but it is the music above all that must create moods and evoke sentiment- whether it is pity, romance, jealousy, rage, pomp, melancholy, heartbreak, ecstasy, passion, mystery, etc. Eric Kunzel and his Pops Orchestra performs a wonderful array of Verdi music scores from his most famous grand operas. This album opens with Aida and there is much to admire here. The Triumphal March is a spectacle-scene which features parades of dancing girls and wild animals as Radames returns victorious. This music is famous for its prominent use of trumpet and chorus. Its orchestral version is equally bombastic. The Anvil Chorus from Il Trovatore is another smash Verdi hit, a chorus piece but on orchestra, it is very catchy as well. Further to these fine works, the album features music from Verdi's Otello and La Traviata. This is a fine intro to opera for those who wish to begin by listening to the orchestral music first.

1 out of 5 stars Dreadful Sound Engineering.......2005-06-17

Such beautiful Verdi and tis a shame to have to fiddle with the volume control on every single track (and even within the track). One will be inaudible, the next will blare.

4 out of 5 stars Karaoke fans - eat your heart out!.......2002-12-29

This disc, containing selections of Verdi's most famous operatic works, is a must buy for fans of Opera that want to "try out their pipes".

What Opera fan hasn't at least sung a few bars of "La Donna e mobile" while in the shower? This 70 minutes of Opera greats from the pen of Verdi under the able direction of the Cincinati Pops orchestra under the baton of Erich Kunzel will make most opera fans dreams come true.

There are no words on any of these numbers - making it a cross between a Karaoke disc and Verdi's greatest hits. It contains some selections from "Aida", "Othello", "Il Trovatore", "La Traviata", "Rigoletto", "Falstaff", and "Nabucco".

My only "complaint" is that the lyrics to the numbers were not included in the liner notes. That would have made this the world's first Opera Karaoke.

Still worth listening to for the majesty of the music behind the words - music that is often overshadowed by the singers. Worth a look for inclusion in any opera fan's classical library.

4 out of 5 stars Great, but you are not really singing the tune !.......2002-05-24

"Celeste Aida"
1. Cincinnati Pops did not play the recitativo. Something is missing, if you are an opera freak.
2. The second verse does not include "Il tuo bel cielo vorrei ridarti", which will mislead a whistling person.

"La donna e mobile"
In the second verse, the "refrain" (la donna e mobil qual piu mal vento ...) is replayed. This gives a "queer" feeling for a singing person who is used to practicing singing it "the way it should be sung".

5 out of 5 stars HIGHLY RECOMMEDED............2002-03-13

I LIKE OPERA WITHOUT THE WORDS AND THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE
PURCHASED LATELY (AND I HAVE BOUGHT MANY LATELY). CARMAN WITHOUT
WORDS IS ALSO VERY ENJOYABLE, AS ARE ALL THE "OPERA WITHOUT WORDS" CDS OUT TODAY. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CD TO ADD TO ANY
COLLECTION OF CLASSICAL MUSIC..

Love the product and received it record time overseas. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars A must if you love Mozart Opera.......2002-04-06

The LA Reviewer said it all and I totally agree. The sound is wonderful and singing top notch. A great discovery and a must for any opera collector. Mozart gets better the more you listen to his opera compositions - the set contains many of the outstanding arias not always done in concert but which are lovely and some rediscoveries. Also, our recent loss of Winbergh makes this a buy as we don't have alot of recordings of his beautiful tenor voice. This set features him on 4 arias and his Mozart singing is truly outstanding. This set of 5 CD's a great value and highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars Great CD but beware!.......2002-02-24

This has to be the ultimate compendium of these undeservedly neglected arias. Many of the arias themselves rival the most glorious moments in the operas, and some of them, particularly the high soprano arias, are highly-charged vocal stuntfests that have to be heard to be believed.

This set has much to recommend it but does have one major technical flaw. Every copy that I have heard (and that is several) has a skip near the end of Track 10 of Disc 1. It seems to be part of the master and many listeners will be able to live with it, but I do wish that producers would take the time to fix a defect like this for such a significant musical document. Purists beware!

5 out of 5 stars A MUST-BUY treasure trove!.......1999-09-04

Can't get enough of sublime Mozartian aria music? This complete compilation of concert arias should be part of every Mozart lover's collection, especially as a supplement to better known opera arias. There are gems among the concert collection that challenge even the loveliest of Mozart's better known operatic work. I can't say this is the only version of the concert arias ever to buy... the more versions I hear, the more I love the different interpretations. But if you're only going to sample one set, this could be the winner. The singers represented are masters of the Mozart craft; one virtuoso piece after another - for five discs, each over an hour long! The arrangement of voices, mostly soprano (since they sing the originally castrati arias as well), is also wonderful; no one sound is heard for too long before a very different one takes its place to give a contrasting flavor. And they're all in top form: Kiri Te Kanawa with her trademark creamy mildness is followed by Edita Gruberova's agile, silver-haunted coloratura. Teresa Berganza, whom I usually link with mezzo roles, is a tour de force of golden warmth; her Ch'io mi scordi de te? on disc 3 (piano accompaniment originally played by Mozart himself) is magnificent and deserves special note. Krisztina Laki and Elfriede Hobarth were lesser known to me; both are quite fine, although Laki's crystal sweetness is stronger and more pitch-perfect than Hobarth's, particularly in the highest notes of some mind-boggling musical phrases. The final 1.5 discs are handed to the men; Gosta Winbergh sings the tenor arias with heroic beauty and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Fernando Corena as the bass-baritones are simply the richly toned legends one would expect. A very nice booklet with notes, lyrics and translations to each aria is included. It's a marvelous set; one of my favorite discoveries.

5 out of 5 stars Dessay at her best!.......2005-10-24

Mozart's concert arias are spectacular, gorgeous melodies and Dessay's sweet high soprano is what they need to blossom. She sounds French from start to finish and occasionally yodels a bit but it's charming. The top A also is a scream but she gets the marks for attempting it. Few others have it anyway. On the whole, this is a lovely recital to admire this singer. Play it on a sunny Sunday morning and it'll brighten your day!

5 out of 5 stars This is a fantastic CD!! Natalie Dessay sings like an angel!!.......2005-09-23

This CD of Mozart concert arias is absolutely unbelievably great!! Natalie Dessay's coloratura soprano voice is lovely!!
Her singing of this program is extremely beautiful!! You should get this CD, because if you're a Mozart fan, this recording should be for you!! Try it!!

4 out of 5 stars Mozart arias of the high order.......2005-09-03

... though not the highest. Kudos to Nathalie for even taking these daring pieces on- this is some of Mozart's most challenging and stratospheric writing, but while I find Ms. Dessay absolutely sparkling in French repertoire, here she is just little nasal sounding in her Italian. And, this is a singer that can pull a nice, solid high G- and I heard a wicked recording of her doing it live!- but here, the 'Popoli Di Tessaglia' high notes are somewhat strained. Also, her considerable acting chops seem on pause here; I think she is a creature of stage and does not come across as well in the recording studio. Having said that, the long lines of 'Vorrei Spiegarvi' and the coloratura runs in 'No, Che Non Sei Capace' are close to perfect and the whole album is well worth buying if you like high flying Mozart arias, some of which are not even available anywhere else.

5 out of 5 stars Skillful!.......2004-12-17

Charming, extraordinary "Concert Arias" from Mozart sung by the aristocratic Madam Dessay, with elegance, agility and powerness! Almost unbelievable in stratospheric high G (Popoli di Tessaglia!) and high F (Sperai vicino il lido)!

5 out of 5 stars The first and best.......2003-12-10

I have bought most of the Dessay recordings and always come back to this one. This program is so perfect for her voice, she brings out the best of it. Her 'Vorrei spiegarvi' is diamantine and the perfectly toned sadness in some moments of 'Popoli di Tessaglia' and 'Alcandro lo confesso' bring tears to my eyes every time...

Every once in a while, a modern rock masterpiece slips through the cracks, usually because it's hard to buy the hype in the English press. But Th' Faith Healers deserve every overwrought accolade they've gotten. The American version of the band's first album, Lido (Elektra), includes 10 subtly different trance-inducing drones, each based on a solid "Sister Ray" groove and featuring Roxanne's vocals as a sweet contrast to the shambolic guitar noise. --Jim DeRogatis

3 out of 5 stars Have faith in The Faith Healers.......2004-08-03

It seems like The Faith Healers were The Raveonettes even before there were a Raveonettes. The Faith Healers were always lumped with early 90's shoegazing, but their sound tends to lean more toward the rawness of The Jesus and Mary Chain. 'Lido' combines the swirly whirlwind riffs of The Raveonettes, sonic-plucking of Swervedriver, pumped at the pace of a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club. The vocals tend to shift from pre-Loveless My Bloody Valentine drones to the boldness of a PJ Harvey or Justine Frischmann. This debut hasn't lost it's bite as it would foreshadow The Raveonettes and the retro-psychadelic scene which bred BRMC, The Warlocks, and The Dandy Warhols. The Faith Healers will exorcise you of your music complacency with it's electricity, down and dirty trippy wall of guitars. The soundtrack for travelling fast up a dusty road or for burning incense while lounging in a room.

        5 out of 5 stars Shoegazadelic!.......2003-08-01

I believe I was about the only American to buy this record when it was released back in 1992! And man were the rest of you fools! But you can fix that right now and get this record.

"Lido" is a sonic wall of grizzled guitar, electronic fuzz and ethereal vocals. The sad thing is Amazon doesn't offer sound clips of the two songs I feel are the best on this outstanding record, "Love Song," and "Spin 1/2." "Spin 1/2" is an especially satasfying nearly 10 minute slice of heaven! One CAN NOT listen to this song on anything but the loudest setting on your stereo! By the end of the song the guitar is screaming and the rhythm section is pulsing faster than a mad hare!

My Bloody Valentine is a similarly sounding band from the time of th Faith Healers (late 80's early 90's), as are The Major Stars from the current set of Shoe Gazer, ne.psychodelic, bands.

While the reviews are few here at Amazon, notice most have given this record five stars. There is a reason for that. This was truely a masterpiece rock and roll record that deserved to give th Faith Healers great fame. But th Faith Healers fell fast through the cracks and disbanded in the mid 1990's.

th Faith Healers record "Lido" is well worth the used price here! Buy it today and rediscover what your shoes look like!!

        5 out of 5 stars MASTERPIECE.......2003-01-19

A friend popped this album in during a drunken night in Oakland, California. No plans for going out...just relaxing outside on the "patio" with a bunch of friends. After awhile, I began to notice the initially subtle background drone that began to encompass the outdoor space. What the hell is this I asked my friend? Th' Faith Healers he said. Damn this is good!! I bought the album the next day at Amoeba for $$$(!!), along with Mogwai's 10 Rapid--another amazing discovery from the prior night. So, Lido...what can I say? I hate to use this abused, cheesey term....but this album ROCKS! Long, heavy guitar drones with superimposed looping, sultry vocals...over and over again. A true masterpiece. Shocking that it never became more popular, at least in this country. By this album, sit back, have a few drinks, or whatever else you are going to do, and pop this album in. It will blow you away.

        5 out of 5 stars Sky.......2001-12-29

Just buy this album for their version of Mother Sky. It's even better than the original Can version. Along side of Pussy Galore's Yu Gung, it's one of the best R&R tracks ever made.

        5 out of 5 stars They're just good..........1999-08-24

Because of them, I made a trip from Far East to Europe. They're the best. And you have to hear them by yourselves.

3 out of 5 stars KERN CONTRASTS KEEP ON ROLLIN' ALONG.......2003-07-09

Jerome Kern never wrote a better piece than SHOW BOAT, and by lumping it together with the dismally dated SUNNY, the compilers of this historical re-release only confirm that vast gulf between the glorious,mould-breaking SHOW BOAT and the sort of show Broadway audiences were used to in the late 1920s.
In actually fact, the SUNNY excerpts are better recorded than the SHOW BOAT songs, probably because the scale of the show was much smaller-no massed choruses of black Mississippi stevedores or Chicago revellers. Jack Buchanan and Binnie Hale do the best with the material and one song.."Who Stole My Heart Away" is catchy and effective.
The SHOW BOAT numbers sound very mannered and dated 75 years after they were recorded, but you can't keep a good show down, and the sheer quality shines down the years, even in so primitive a recording. The cast includes Colin Clive and Cedric Hardwicke -interestingly, both later played Baron Frankenstein in films directed by James Whale...who also directed Universal's definitive film of SHOW BOAT. Arthur Howlett and edith Day both sound very plummy and operatic as the romantic leads, Magnolia and Gaylord Ravenal, but it's easy to see why the magnificent Paul Robeson set the London theatre scene ablaze back in 1928. There are better recordings of SHOW BOAT, but this piece of history is worth buying for Robeson's rendition of "Old Man River" alone!

3 out of 5 stars British OC recordings of historical interest.......2002-12-02

The British were way ahead of us - re capturing original musical show casts on record. Here eight 78 rpm sides are devoted to the London productions of Kern and Hammerstein's SHOW BOAT and SUNNY and six sides to Rodgers and Hart's LIDO LADY.

For the most part they have a certain charm despite surface noise and give us a look at the carefree antics of the twenties musical (in the case of SUNNY and LIDO LADY). Jack Buchanan and Cicely Courneidge shine and Jack Hulbert is a delight.

The SHOW BOAT collection is augmented by the rare recording of Jules Bledsoe as "Joe" singing OLD MAN RIVER - Bledsoe created the role on Broadway (in addition to the Robeson recording). This set only suffers from the voice of leading man, Howett Worster, who is simply awful as Ravenal. He has a reedy, thin voice and a terribly affected manner in his word pronunciation. Otherwise this is a nice set.

SUNNY only has two numbers of worth- the title tune and WHO? and they are well done here.

The real find is LIDO LADY, a production Rodgers and Hart created for London, and for which the libretto has disappeared. Here preserved are two gems, the comic and infectious BUT NOT TODAY and the standard, IT ALL DEPENDS ON YOU (which is taken at a faster clip in the original than as it has been presented since).

This is of historical significance and important for lovers of Kern, Hammerstein, Hart, and Rodgers. The general public should perhaps look elsewhere for its musical thrills.

5 out of 5 stars SUBLIME MOZART WITH SUBLIME ARTISTS.......2007-05-23

Don't miss this recording! Edita and all(orchestra and conductor) are at their peak and at their best. It doesn't get much better than this and in front of a live audience. This Soprano is right up there with all the great Mozart interpreters. A WORD OF ADVICE: You can get this CD on ELATUS for $13-$16 dollars. The Title is MOZART CONCERT ARIAS 2564-60338-2. A truly fantastic live concert of Mozart by a great coloratura soprano.

5 out of 5 stars How easy she makes it sound!.......2007-01-22

This is a live recording from a 2 days concert in Graz, Austria in June 1991. The audience is awesomely quiet during the numbers, however. Sound is very good, so I didn't even realized it is a live recording until the applause at the end of the first aria!

Edita Gruberova is known as one of the most technically flawless singer there is, and from this recording I'd have to say that reputation is well earned. All the 8 arias are well to excellently sung. She is very expressive as well, very subtle shading of the voice to convey many emotions without disrupting the flow of the music. Wonderful legato... floats some haunting notes, no trouble with the scaling whatsoever. Evens bites convincingly in 'No, che non sei capace' (that longer twin sister of the Queen of the Night's rage aria). The voice can be surprisingly assertive and expressive for someone from the leggiero range, and she knows how to use it.

Wonderful conducting by Harnoncourt as well. Very dynamic read of Mozart's score... voice and orchestra in a dialogue. Can't be done much better than this. The only piece here that isn't my prefered version is the wonderful concerto aria 'Vorrei spiegarvi, o Dio'... all the notes are there, but something is missing for me. I've heard her done it better than what's caught here... mind, her 'not her best' is still mind-blowingly good... bested only by Natalie Dessay's version on her Mozart Arias CD.

Anyhow, I'd bet Mozart'd deem Gruberova in the same league as the Weber sisters if he could hear her today. A marvelous singer she is.

Insert comes with libretto in German, Italian, English, French.

5 out of 5 stars YES < this is lovely singing, but DO NOT BUY..........2006-11-07

...this edition, at over $100!!!! It is available as a French import for about $13!!! Just search for Gruberova, and you'll find it ("Air de concert" is the title, I think).

5 out of 5 stars Edita at her finest.......2006-06-30

This CD lives in my car. I never cease to marvel at how any human being could produce the incredible sounds, musicianship, beauty, brilliance and seamless phrasing that Edita performed in front of an audience for this recording. She was definitely at her peak for this one. Personal favorites (i.e., worthy of hitting the "repeat" mode on my CD player) are tracks 4, 7, and 8, with the first track being the perfect mood setter for the entire concert. As a soprano, I can only dream of hitting the notes and the melismas that she does. Just incredible!! Brava, Edita!!!
