5 out of 5 stars I love this album.......2005-01-21

This is my 5 star Go Betweens album....every song is a good one and several of them are great...anyone who loves the GOB's has their own favourite and you can debate which one, (and I have)...This is their fourth album and the guys had grown up here and were making songs that reflected and refined their personal experiences and not just their imaginary ones...Grant Mc Lennan and Robert Forster were uniquely two lead singers in the one band, and they both had unique voices...both were infallibly Romantic but Forster was the ironist, McLennan, even at his lightest, was always touched with melancholy...these guys were the genuine article and though they never got famous they were a remarkable band... Spring Rain is Robert Forster at his most jaunty, Twin Layers of Lightening at his most sophisticated, Bow Down his most romantic...McLennan's offerings The Wrong Road and Apology Accepted are splendid...I love this album...If you don't know the band, start with a Greatest Hits and if you get what The Go Betweens were up to, this is the album you must have.

5 out of 5 stars Falling Down like Love.......2006-05-30

One oddly jaundiced reviewer asked how the Go-Betweens could write a song about 'rain'. Perhaps the reviewer lives in a bubble. Regardless, you don't need to have lived in Brisbane (or any other sub-tropical clime) to realise saying 'Spring Rain', a sublime track, is just about rain is akin to saying King Lear is just about some old codger. It's a song about youth, family, space, light and yes cleansing downpours.

Robert Forster says this album is his best. Take it from him. They are all wonderful, but this catches the band in jaunty flight, between the more rough hewn (occasionally precious) diamonds of their earlier works, and the pop-genius(but sometimes over-produced) magic of the following two albums.

5 out of 5 stars "The rain hit the roof with the sound of a finished kiss".......2006-02-28

While I depart from the view, voiced by many GB fans, that this is their best record, I still think it ranks pretty high up there in the "canon"...This marks the point where they really started to beef up and "lush up" their production...before this, things were pretty barebones. And, in their next disc, "Tallulah" they fully reaped all the benefits of this approach..

On this disc (their fourth best? not that anyone's counting, but I'd place it behind Tallulah, Lovers Lane and Oceans Apart) the songwritings highlights are far too numerous to mention...having said that, "Spring Rain", one of RF's indisputable best, is contained herein..."Head Full of Steam", "Bow Down", "Twin Layers of Lightning" and "Apology Accepted" are all also great, moving, and beautiful (and any other encomiums you care to add)...

What it is all about, at the end of the day, is songwriting, and that is the GBs strong suit and what keeps the fans coming back...

As for the reviewers below who don't get it, well, they just don't get it. Sorry their songwriting isn't more scientifically up to date and torn from today's headlines - whattaya want them to sing about, the Genome Project? Me, I like songs about ghosts...

2 out of 5 stars Expectations.......2006-02-25

I am starting to see why people hate critics. Some groups like the Go-Betweens get unconditional love. This album was praised to the ends of the universe. Come on. The catchiest song is about rain. They also sing sbout ghosts. This is after the year 2000 and those beliefs give me the impression the members of the band have a first grade education. Are they going to sing about santa claus or the easter bunny next. This is a mediocre album in all respects. Get Echo & The Bunnymens' Reverberation. They sing about ridiculous subjects with a wink of the eye. They deliver it with energizing music. The critics hated it.

1 out of 5 stars The fan who's going to be hated for this..........2005-03-13

Welp, it's been what?... near 20 years after 'Liberty Belle and the Black Diamond Express' has been released. 20 years! I swear, for as long, and even as recent as yesterday, I'd given this album just about every golly-gosh DARNDEST last heartfelt honest listen, and... it's STILL an OUTRIGHT TERRIBLE ABOMINATION! I've even bought it, gave it away because it was horrible, THEN purchased it AGAIN thinking that I might've missed something! AAAHHH!!!

(I couldn't rate it here but,) This is the ONLY album I have by one of my all-time favorite band's that rates further than below zero. Shows to go you that what the majority of my fellow fans will claim is their best - aint always the best. I often wonder if my fellow fanmates are lying about how this is their best! Admittedly I may be the lone gunman but, I guess you'll just have to judge for yourself.

I've loved the Go-Betweens since 1981, before they released by early '82 (not trying to flash my cred... much). They are definitely pioneers of a great song. However, the production, mixing and mastering on this album is the worst I've ever heard for any release by a group; sincerely, there is no other. The guitars are just barely audible throughout, if not entirely. On most of the tracks Lindy's drums sound something like a plastic spoon hitting mashed potatoes. In fact - they don't even sound like drums, nor are they played as such. The bass? - Why didn't you yell at the engineer, Mr. Vickers?!

Lastly, and most important, the songs: even after their 10 year hiatus, Robert & Grant's past and recent songwriting is truly some of the most honest, melodic and intelligent; their b-sides were excellent as well. Yet unfortunately every note and lyric on 'Libery Belle... ' is the exact opposite. There is no good or bad in music... but nothing on this album IS music.

Now, I know I'm going to get railed for this comment too but, I's just gots to says it: the follow up album, 'Tallulah', is a near masterpiece.
Shwew!
There! I said it, even when nobody else dared! I know people will say Tallulah's "Cut It Out" track is shameful (which it definitely isn't; they will admit to its lovely chorus), but it's Pi x Pi above ANYthing on 'Liberty Belle... '. Get 'Tallulah' folks, and anything/everything else the Go-Betweens have released (solo's as well). But, not this one. Never ever.

5 out of 5 stars Head Full of Steam.......2002-08-01

Probably their most accessible album, I first discovered the GBs when the above song dented the British charts. This album should have 'broke' them into the wider world, but it seems that as they can never be pigeonholed, they've always had problems with gaining more than 'critical' success.

These songs are well-crafted, though sometimes quite melancholy. It can 'get' you emotionally and that's where their strength lies.

If you haven't discovered them before, its never too late ...
