Though it might not be fair to say that Toby Keith has mellowed, he has definitely matured. Rather than taking political potshots, he exchanges bully-boy bluster for a tone of wry bemusement on "Big Blue Note" and "She Left Me," tempering middle-aged pride with a confession that the years have taken their toll on "As Good as I Once Was." After flexing his muscles with the album-opening title track, which sets Keith's musical autobiography to the trademark lope of Waylon Jennings, he showcases the subtler side of his vocal artistry on "She Ain't Hooked on Me No More"--a duet with Merle Haggard--and "Knock Yourself Out," while turning almost tender on "Your Smile" and "Where You Gonna Go." For those who miss the old Toby, there's "Just the Guy to Do It," which proceeds from one of the cheesiest pickup lines ever ("Do blondes really have more fun/Or are they just easier to spot in the dark?") into promises to punch out an errant boyfriend. Yet even this song has more of a Caribbean lilt than the macho swagger of Keith's younger days. --Don McLeese

Keep them coming...Keith.......2007-04-16
I bought this CD specifically for "Big Blue Note" one of my favorite songs. I also got another of my favorites "As Good As I Once Was". Some of the rest are also good but some I had never heard of before. I still feel I got my moneys worth.
I continue to be hooked on you............2007-02-24
Vintage Toby Keith. There are however a couple of pieces that are a tad below par, but quite good nonetheless (You caught me at a bad time, As good as I once was, Your smile) in an otherwise excellent piece of Keithean showmanship. There's the usual wry TK humor, with outstanding songs and themes. Specially noteworthy: Big Blue Note, She Ain't Hooked On Me No More. Toby Keith fans should not miss out on having this CD in their audio-shelves (have I gone and created myself a neologism just now?). My vote on this CD is YES! Go ahead and buy it. You will enjoy it.

Great cd with some good tunes. Purchased for boyfriend that likes the song about not a good as I once was? I like the song myself. Purchased mainly for that song. Kinda fits when you get older but still have it somewhat going on~Worth buying!! Song makes you feel younger and brings back some old memories.

Customer Reviews:
Sousa By the Royal Marines.......2007-03-31
This is a great CD re-issue of the Band of the Royal Marines School of Music under Graham Hoskins. This band did a three LP series on Sousa marches some years ago that was better than most on this very well covered topic. Sousa march recordings will always come and go, but some like this stand out more than others. For one, there is nothing like the panache of a Royal Marines band. Their sound is a time honored development that gets passed from one generation to the next. Even as the number of RM bands continues to change and downsize, there are now about four bands left in the service, their sound quality continues to be superb.
When these recordings were made RM bands were still at their height in the British service and their quality was amazing. Most bands numbered over 60 in this period, and that is why many Americans may be surprsed at the volume of music produced here. This is not one of your small, though excellent regimental bands! Americans tend to think that British military band instrumentation is on the thin side. Not so here! Of course Sousa always sounds best with either the Allentown band or the US Marine band.
This CD is evidence of how popular Sousa has always been in the UK, and with RM bands in particular. The selection here on two CDs covers most of the standard Sousa fair, with a few different selections here and there. Unfortunatley there are none of Sousa's fine transcriptions for classical music, or selections from his operettas. This music is always wonderful to have in combination with the marches as it shows how much variety he was capable of in his compositions. For that kind of concert the reader is referred to the very fine collection of Sousa music being done under the Naxos label by the Band of the Royal Artillery.
Here you will find a solid collection of Sousa's great marches. Roughly a third of those 136 compositions are contained here. The Royal Marines give a sharpe and clear sound to these works which should certainly inspire. You will also get a very nice idea how RM bands sounded back in the 1980s. Graham Hoskins was a fine director of music, typical of the inhouse genius of the Royal Marines Band Service at that time. He took this band on a USA tour in 1985 with the Arygll & Sutherland Highlanders. Devotees of Sousa should enjoy these spirited versions of the march king's music as performed across the pond.
Still Among the Best.......2006-06-01
I bought two audio casettes with these marches back in the 1980's and wore them out. These performances are hard to beat for virtuosity, enthusiasm, and sparkle. The sound quality is outstanding. And there are some marches that are rarely, if at all, available.
How Sousa Should Sound.......2006-03-07
Great value 2 cd disc set cut in the early 1980's & remastered the sound of the Royal Marines Band is nothing short of terrific. Judging by the sound would not be surprised for this to be a combined double RM band. These 1st chair players give Sousa's great marches that extra kick that takes the "March Kings" music to that higher level. By the center quick march!!!!

Customer Reviews:
This is a MUST for anyone who enjoys classical music ... .......2006-06-07
...BUT not if you take it SO seriously that you have lost your sense of humor.
Peter Schickele (with whom I am occasionally confused - we apparently look alike!) - has got to be one of my all-time favorite composers. When I was in graduate school, I took considerable abuse from my fellow music lovers for actually having MORE albums by P.D.Q Bach than by J. S. Bach (though I think it was barely a one-point margin, really...)
But the "New Horizons in Music Appreciation" approach to Beethoven's 5th symphony is not only a musical analysis of the piece as it is being played, but a slam on the constant "blah-blah-blah" that one hears during ANY sports event.
"My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" has got to be my all-time favorite spoof of the overly pompous "art song" oratorio. I've encouraged one of my colleagues (who directs the college chorale where I teach) to include it in a program, to no avail. One of these days, I'll put my money where my mouth is - and buy sheet music for the entire chorale.
This is one of only two albums that I have in (a) vinyl, (b) tape, and (c) CD format. That should be some indication of how very, very special I believe this to be. [The other, for those who are interested, is Joan Baez' "Diamonds and Rust."]
This has been around for years, and there's a good reason. Schickele is not only funny when he wants to be, but a supremely accomplished composer and musician, with dozens and dozens of serious musical scores to his credit as well.
PDQ Bach -- The Spike Jones of Classical Music.......2006-03-16
For the classical music lover, this is an amazing spoof. For those who do not know classical music well, this is still highly entertaining.
Recaptured (Twisted) Youth.......2003-03-31
My friend and I saw the good Prof. Schickele here in Pasadena last night (March 29th-- AND the conductor of the Pasadena Symphony is Jorge Meister!)-- and the last number on the program was the WONDERFUL "The Seasonings"-- I had a very hard time even after all these years of first hearing this on a REAL record of not singing along with every little tune!!! This piece last night, being sung by singers whom I do not doubt were not even born when I first heard a recording of it, were as good as the ones I remember from my decadent youth on the original recording. Buy this C.D. if only for this piece!
I store it in the CD changer in my car........2002-10-06
My favorite single line of music from this is from "The Unbegun Symphony". Who would think to combine "You are my sunshine", a
tune I have always thought of as sappy sweet, played on violins,
with a background of horns, (I don't know what piece, but it
makes me thing of something noble and civilized) making it a
definitive statement of a benevolent sense of life.
PDQ Bach's other works are delighfully absurd, as are Peter
Schickele's commentaries. (Well I have a new set of friends now)
New Horizons in Music Appreciation Indeed..........2002-08-08
It was while sitting in Music Appreciation in college that I was first introduced to the work of P.D.Q. Bach, specifically the track "New Horizons in Music Appreciation: Beethoven's Fifth Symphony," in which Professor Peter Schickele and Robert Dennis serve as the announcers for a spirited game involving the first movement of that particular work. Not only was it funny ("He's playing a cadenza! He's out of his mind! He thinks its an oboe concerto!") it was also more informative than the professor ("I get the feeling we are going to hear a lot of that four note motif, Bob").
One of the things about P.D.Q. Bach is that the more I learned about classical music the funnier I found it. Yes, I have enough memories of my mother insisting on playing the Texaco Opera quiz throughout the house on a Saturday afternoon to appreciate why "What's my Melodic Line?" and its exploration of the mysteries of the Baroque is funny, but it was not until I saw "Amadeus" and listened to "The Marriage of Figaro" that I understood why the recitatias in the Cantata "Iphigenia in Brooklyn" were hysterical (I was tempted to share this story of Iphigenia with my Classical Mythology class, but given their tentativeness to explore Euripides I did not think it wise to have them get neck deep in Schickele). Then again, the Madrigal "My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" really needs no explanation, so there is something for everybody here, no matter what you level of understanding of classical music.
In discussing the works of P.D.Q. Bach with others it becomes clear that you can no more put together an idea collection of his "best" work than you can for lesser composers like Mozart or Beethoven. But you are certainly going to find a few old favorites and maybe one or two pieces that you have hitherto managed to avoid.
Now, if we can only get a University of Southern North Dakota at Hoople t-shirt...

Amazon.com essential recording
It's hard to believe that this, the BEST EVER 1812 Overture was not only recorded in the 1950s, but it still sounds better than any other version. This last fact is a tribute to the remastering expertise of producer Wilma Cozart Fine, and a still greater tribute to her late husband, a recording genius, for leaving her with such fantastic quality original tapes to work with. If you want real cannon, the sound of a zillion bells, and a really sensational brass band, all perfectly blended together to produce the ultimate in audio spectacle, then baby this one's for you. Wellington is, if anything, even noisier--though a lot less valuable musically. Still, it's the only logical coupling, and every single cannon blast and musket shot comes over with thrilling immediacy. What a disc! --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
high praise?.......2007-02-17
i am completely at a loss for words as to why so many people say this is the best 1812 ever. my band director in high school played this for us as a demonstration on how brass players should not play. at no point does the brass sound good. they are constantly out of tune, out of balance, and out of character. the strings sound like they are using a branch instead of a bow.
the canon and bells are extraordinary though. if all you are buying 1812 for is the canon shot, then by all means purchase this disc as it will not disapoint. the commentary is great too, discussing the selection of canon and bells.
this CD is in extraordinary contrast to Dorati conducting Stravinsky. those recordings are fantastic and highly recommended. i would suggest purchasing any other version of 1812.
0 stars for the performance. 2 stars for the commentary, canon, and bell work.
Wonderful.......2007-02-12
The CD came quickly just in time for a last minute gift idea. Was exactly what I was looking for.
Nicely Done Recording.......2006-03-24
The original recording was a product of the 60's. It is well done musically and the cannons heard in the pieces are synchronized to the musical score, as the composers indicated.
The cannons are authentic of the time of the battles and the sound of the firings good. The explanation of how they engineered the microphone setup and fired the cannons is given in commentary as an extra. This is interesting as well.
The music itself is well known in the case of Tchailovsky's 1812 Overture. Beethoven's Wellington's Victory is not as well known. It's a lesser Beethoven but still interesting. It's written for popular consumption so lively. In the Beethoven, the different armies, French and English, are separated in the right and left speakers. Their approach, the battle, and the conclusion is indicated in the separate speakers. The battle is between the forces of Wellington and those of Bonaparte in Vittoria, Spain June 21rst, 1813.
The 1812 in excellent (3 mic) stereo.......2005-11-28
I own the Telarc LP version of the 1812 and recently transferred that to CD - with a lot of surface noises to fix due to the bulk of that recording being so very low in volume (except of course for the cannons). Early this week I purchased an iTunes download of this Dorati version, along with the commentary and I was so impressed that I immediately ordered the whole CD through Amazon.
Contrary to Sarah Bryan Miller's comment about Mercury's famed "one microphone technique", which had been applied in their 1954 version, this is the 1958 re-recording which has been downmixed to stereo (on DAT) direct from the restored 3 channel mastertape. It has been trasferred manually by the original engineer using restored original equipment - no noise reduction, filters, limiters etc which might colour the recording.
It's an amazingly dynamic analogue recording, and in every aspect it stomps all over the Telarc - which sounds wimpy and hollow by comparison.
Heavy canon and great bells!.......2005-06-11
This is the largest selling version of the 1812 overture ever recorded. All because of the tremendous canon fire. After all, it is the 1812, so the larger the cannons, the more impact it makes. But there is music too. So how does Dorati fare against his fellow competitors? Farely well, but it doesn't fare as well as his remake for Decca. Dorati was never a Tchaikovsky specialist. Fortunately, the 1812, more than any other piece of music Tchaikovsky wrote, can take all the jerky, precisionless playing. The Mercury sound is acoustically VERY dry. Lacking in any sense of natural studio sound or reverbaration. The string sound in the introduction is not the greatetst. Compare this to Reiner or Stokowski. Both have lush string sound that will have you captivated from the beginning. But a lush string tone is not essentially required for the 1812. After all, it is a war piece. Herman Scherchen's version is a good example. Mediocre strings, but thoroughly fresh and insightful reading. It's incredibly exciting. Dorati has great bells and that adds to the effect of the finale, along with the powerful canons. Great percussion and a forward drive make Dorati's a good performance. Most people. Sure it may not be as smooth as Stokowski, but the artillary makes it exciting. Capriccio Italien does not fare as well. The opening trumpet fanfare sounds great, but the performance is rather jerky, and lacking in finesse. Compare this to old, long out of print Phase 4 recording by Stanley Black. Black's finale gets that spirit moving. Kondrashin is another good choice. What's nice is that there is recording analysis by Deems Taylor that explains how the canons were recorded. Interesting, but once you hear it, you don't need to listen to it again. Wellington's Victory has always been grouped with the 1812. Lightweight Beethoven with plenty of musket shots. Dorati's version is fine, nothing spectacular other than the musekt fire. Buy this for the 1812, but if you're anything like most classical collectors, you already own this recording.

stunning melodies framed with absolutely brutal guitar, bass and drums. great lyrics too. haunting, uplifting and rockin'. what could be better?
Where was I?.......2004-11-17
I can't remember where I was when I first heard Kristen Hersch and Throwing Muses. I'm not even sure what made me go out and purchase "University", but there it was, popped into my CD player - again, and again, and again, and again. I couldn't find anyone to share my enthusiasm over this record and was fairly dumbfounded as to why TM was not on the lips of every indy rocker out there. Just mine. But that was okay, because I had found something that no one else had or seemed to appreciate. "University" was a turning point for me, as I had finally discovered music that somebody made that seemed to be made just for me. I didn't care if others didn't share my enthusiasm, or didn't think it was the best thing they've ever heard. It just didn't matter. What mattered was there was a band out there that didn't care, either. They just made music that made them feel good, and didn't give a damn that they weren't cracking the top 40. And that made me feel good, too.
Direct , poisonous rock.......2004-09-15
It's a depressing thought really , that more people on this earth own a Goo Goo Dolls cd than a Throwing Muses one . Unlike the various one hit wonders of our times though , the Muses' music always had the ability to stay for a long long time in the minds and hearts of the listeners who chose to explore it .
Their 1995 offering " University " is one of the most sharp rock records of that year . Kristin Hersh powerfully perfomes some of the tracks in a serial killer-like style ( " Bright Yellow Gun " , " Shimmer " ) and others almost sounding in pain ( " Hazing " , " Flood " ) . The tittle track is a haunting instrumental piece which feels like child ghosts playing hide and seek while " Teller " is probably the album's discreet highlight . The most suprising track though must be " Snakeface " where the band lets loose and delivers a sly , highly addictive melody .
None of the Muses' albums ever reached the top 20 but that is mostly because they themselfs seem to prefer to be rock's most enigmatic underdogs capable of remarkable things . Overall , " University " is first-class stuff , full of satanic riffs and arresting vocals . Sadly out of stock in amazon.com , this is one for you to pick up right away.
So Smart, So Good.......2004-03-31
I'm a late-comer to Throwing Muses, but theirs is the type of music that will last a long, long time. University is the best of the lot, combining Hersh's intellect with some amazing melodies and beats. The funny thing is that when I first listened to this cd, I was rather unimpressed. It wasn't until I took another listen a couple of months later that I realized that while I had been passively acknowledging their musical skill, I had also been ignoring the power of Hersh's words. That is where the true beauty of the Muses' music is found. Once you actually "listen", their mixture of music and message is so unique (and yes, at times, weird) that it immerses you. This cd is a great experience. I may have arrived late to the scene, but I plan to stay around for quite a while.
it's alright.......2003-12-15
So as a Throwing Muses fan who came in a little late in the game, i must say i havent seen my opinion expressed by anyone else so i feel compelled to speak up. i was first exposed to TM with the release of their latest album (the new self-titled one) and i love it. i can't get enough of it. my next purchase was In A Doghouse (compilation of their earliest work), and i love that too-- great new wave / punk music with lots of imagination, and no cheesy mixing. that said, i can't get past the godawful dated ass production on every album in between. i started with house tornado and began working thru their collection in order and now i've gotten to this one, where they finally cut back on the early nineties bloated drums and fluffy guitars, but the whole album is so low key it puts me to sleep. its a beautifully crafted album, and i can definitely appreciate it as a work of art that someone put a lot of time and effort into, but the fact remains that i listen to tracks 1, 2, and 4 and turn it off.

What did I expect, anyway?.......2004-01-11
Although the concert band in Ann Arbor puts in a yoeman-like performance, the arrangements are just awful. UM's band always seems to fumble the ball when it comes to arranging the fight songs of other teams in the Big T(elev)en, and that tendency shows through on this album. At least the concert band doesn't "jump-march" during their performance, so there isn't that annoying drop in tone, tenor and constancy every two beats, like there is at live performances.
With any luck, maybe Ohio State - the nation's best band - will put out a comparable CD. Once they play even an opposing team's fight song, they own it.
What the?!.......2004-01-10
As a member of a Big Ten marching band, I have had the good fortune to watch most of these groups perform live on the field on Saturday afternoons. These recordings would sound more at place on the soundtrack to the Nutcracker. There is great musicianship as would be expected from a Big Ten band, but these are not the legendary fight songs that I thought I was purchasing. Does anyone know of a compiliation of the Saturday versions of these great songs?
A Real "Rouser".......2002-02-14
Excellent symphonic band arrangements of some great favorites. These college kids are remarkable players. My only criticism is that some of the arrangements seem to make these marches into Broadway showstoppers and take excessive liberties with the original scores. Good audio quality for a recording made at the beginning of the digital era.
The Best Marches.......2000-10-30
I bought this record when it first came out. My father and I used to listen to it on the way to Football games. The songs are performed by U of M's concert band, not their marching band, so the sound is even more incredible. If you ever hear commercials with fight songs in the background, this is their source!! My record is long been scratched so now I'm getting it on CD. Best when listened to on saturday mornings.
Terrible arrangements.......2000-09-29
UM is certainly one of the finest marching bands in the nation; but these arangements are just awful. The rendition for On Brave Old Army Team sounds like something conjured up for the soundtrack of a bad war movie. This would be a great CD if they just played them straight.

Sometimes simplicity is the mother of invention, and with In C, Terry Riley composed nothing short of a classic. A cornerstone of minimalism, Riley's 1964 composition is little more than a loose guideline for musicians. Driven by the repeated pulses of even octave eighth notes played on the top two C keys of the piano, each member of the ensemble runs through 53 simple phrases at a self-determined pace. Gradually, swarms of instruments find themselves playing in unison, always to be overtaken by the perfect pacing of the pulsing piano. The entire composition gradually moves from C to E to C to G and, when performed correctly, the effect is otherworldly.
This recording from 1968 features Riley himself on saxophone and a small ensemble of musicians from the New Music Center in Buffalo, New York. Overdubs were employed to keep the flow going and the effect of all this repetition is nothing short of mesmerizing, albeit slightly clinical. An even jazzier recording of this composition exists, the 25th Anniversary Concert on New Albion. On that live recording, a larger ensemble of jazz and classical's elite (including members of Kronos and Rova) invigorate In C with a full sound and plenty of gusto. --Jason Verlinde
Album Description
Terry Riley's In C, one of the most influential compositions of the past quarter century, has been played by almost every conceivable combination of instruments; however, the Shanghai Film Orchestra's version ranks as one of the most exciting and exotic interpretations. It marks the 25th anniversary of the piece, and represents the first time a Western new music piece has been recorded in China. In C is a rhythmic, energetic work, but it also echoes the mystical, embroidered music of the Near East and India. By staying in or around the key of C, this 1964 work creates a model sound that can be seen as a forerunner of today's minimalist and world music styles.
The Shanghai Film Orchestra plays this contemporary Western work on traditional Chinese instruments. The tuning is different, and the tone colors of the ancient Chinese bells and strings lend a new vibrancy to the piece. The construction of this version is equally striking. Instead of following the score straight through, earlier parts are brought back and woven into a tapestry of sound even more mesmerizing than Riley's original recording.
The talented Chinese-American composer, David Mingyue Liang, contributes two works that extend the orchestra's range to include the ethereal sounds of bowed vibes and the haunting resonance of China's only complete set of mangluo gongs. This remarkable recording, the result of a cultural openness in China, proves that the East and West have much to say to each other.

fresh .......2006-11-16
I am not shure if any of the reviewers here are reffering to this recording... This is not the "original" recording of In C - this is a performance od Shanghai Film ORchestra, adding another two "eastern" compositions to the CD.
This performance is extraordinary, a flowing of soundscapes, real musical streams, In C sounds even more like some ethereal far-eastern music when played by all those chinese instruments and the other two compositions fit together with it perfectly. I think this is a really gorgeous contemporary music.
Still the Best Recording.......2005-12-30
Minimalism has produced five masterpieces: Philip Glass' "Music in Twelve Parts" and "Einstein on the Beach," La Monte Young's "The Well-Tuned Piano" (good luck finding that one!), Steve Reich's "Music for 18 Musicians," and Terry Riley's "In C." Although there are several recordings of "In C", each with a different orchestration, this one is probably still the best recording after all is said and done. (I only wish Mr. Riley would make a much longer recording, AT LEAST two hours long.)
Different but Classic.......2005-07-01
In C is a launch pad for a group of students form New Yock and is composed by the great Terry Riley. For some reason this album is good to listen to on a rainy day,the clutter of insterments playing and interweaving the musical bits and pieces together is soothing to. Also good to fall asleep on. For the length of the album it never gets tirering and the funny thing is the c note on the piano begins, plays all the way though and ends the piece but the string is broken.I recommend this to anyone wanting something new to listen to.
Hard to listen to.......2002-12-04
So...it seems that this record, along with Henry Cow's "Western Culture", sparks a lot of controversy among the crowd at amazon. But unlike some of my fellow reviewers, I am actually going to DESCRIBE the music insted of argue about it.
From the beginning you can tell that this recording has suffered from the ravages of age (either that or they're using a very cheap piano). That's really too bad, because this might have been a very good performance, were we only able to hear it better.
"In C" is a very hard piece to play, both mentally and physically. The subtle, ever-shifting patterns demand that you not "listen", to the music, but just play it in the background, "tuning in" from time to time. But I have a problem with Riley's instrumentation: he always uses way too many woodwinds and mallet percussion, making the piece sound like an indonesian gamelan orchestra. If you like the gamelan sound, then you won't have any problem with that, but if you find it somewhat annoying, then watch out.
Instead of this album, I would recommend the superb version recently released by Bang on a Can. They eliminate the gamelan effect and almost all of the wind instruments, using mostly strings such as Double Bass, Mandolin, and Electric Guitar.
Listen for Jon Hassel playing trumpet on this release (with the mouthpiece on, I presume), sixteen years before his collaboration with Eno on "Fourth World Possible Musics". Hmmm. Interesting.
A minimalist classic.......2002-04-16
The first time I heard this recording, some twenty-five years ago, I was a bit shocked - it was utterly unlike anything I had experienced in "classical" music. But after a few listening sessions it began to grow on me. The repetitions and subtle pattern changes will either enthrall or bore you; one person's trance is another's monotony. Whatever the case, there is much to admire in Terry Riley's classic experiment with structure and instrumentation.
Since this landmark recording, there have been other noteworthy versions. I own an interesting one by the Shanghai Film Orchestra, which includes a number of Chinese instruments which create a uniquely shimmering texture. And the recent recording by the superb Bang on a Can All-Stars is not to be missed. But this one was the first, and has its own place in history.

Great CD.......2007-03-22
I haven't listened to Kenton since I was a kid in the 70's and 80's when I played trombone at school. My dad had a stack of Kenton vinyl. It was great to purchase this on cd and listen to MacArthur Park and hey Jude again along with the rest of the music. I still get chills everytime I listen to MacArthur Park. Awesome musicianship! I was just a very young kid in 1970. It would have been great to have seen this concert in person.
As AMAZING now as it was then.......2006-06-26
This is classic Kenton of 1970. As a college music student who heard this concert live, I am as amazed now as I was then. The band knew their musical fan audience and really "put out" for them with some of Kenton's finest performers, Willie Maiden, Quinn Davis, Dick, Shearer, Warren Gale, and great arrangements by Dee Barton, Willie Maiden, Bill Holman and Ken Hanna. This recording is a must for any Kenton fan.
WOW!!!.......2003-04-12
The Hey Jude sax solo will blow your mind!! There are not that many notes on the horn! How did he kick it up that high?
All I have to say is WOW!! This CD kicks butt!
The One & Only.......2003-02-21
This is Kenton & Band at their finest. The audience is composed of jazz student musicians and their instructors. The profession- als out-do themselves in this University setting to demonstrate what true Kenton jazz can be. This is a must for any Kenton fan.
Aging but still exciting.......2002-03-04
I have loved this album/CD for 30 years. OK, so it is aging a bit awkwardly and Stan was trying to look "with it" with Hey Jude. Still it is exciting and has the rich sounds of the Kenton orchestra. I especially enjoy McArthur Park with unusual lyrics but gorgeous voicings. Kenton in the 70's. I think you'll enjoy if you are a true Kenton fan.

Customer Reviews:
Required listening for fans of Eric Whitacre.......2007-07-14
I have been a choral singer for 30 years, and have been to Europe five times on concert tours. Although I have a serious interest in all genres of music, choral music is what moves me most. I'm always open to hearing new music, and once I encounter something that appeals to me, I usually seek to find a copy for my library.
During last year's holiday season, I happened to catch a Christmas festival broadcast on the PBS-HD channel, featuring the choirs, handbells and orchestra of Concordia College. In the middle of the concert they performed "Lux Aurumque" by Eric Whitacre. At that time, I had heard of Eric Whitacre, but had not yet heard any of his music.
Words cannot express what I felt as I listened to their performance of this piece for the first time; it was truly magical, and brought tears to my eyes. Fortunately, I captured the broadcast on my TiVo for repeat viewings. I was hooked.
I wasted no time in looking for this young composer's music, and found the story of his career fascinating. The other CD's featuring Eric Whitacre's compositions are in wider distribution than this one, which I believe was the first. This CD contains his early compositions for wind ensemble, three choral pieces and one setting of a song cycle for piano, violin and soprano. The sound quality is fairly good, considering the age of the original recording. Recommended for anyone who wants a deeper insight into the evolutiion of Eric Whitacre's compositional skills.
Fantastic!.......2005-09-22
This CD is truly remarkable in the sound and content- Eric is a one-of-a-kind composer with fresh ideas. The only thing I found disappointing is that a few songs I really like, such as Sleep, were not recorded on this album (in wind ensemble arrangement). However, it did show me some of his other works, which I had never heard of before.
My favorite modern Composer.......2005-01-12
I have both listened and sang much of Whitacre's work, and I can't say enough for it. The daring blends of parts and amazing dissonence make it different from other composers out there today. Whitacre manages to make music that can be taken for face value or you can look for symbolism within the chords and cresendos. This collection is a must for any music lover.
