5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-14

This CD is a must have for any Mormon Tabernacle Choir fans. The music is very reverent and gentle, and should also appeal to those not from the LDS church, seeing as how most of the music is common to the wider Christian community. This CD is a fantastic addition to any music collection.

3 out of 5 stars A few bright spots, but also some disappointments.......2007-01-19

It Is Well With My Soul is one of my favorite-favorites and that is the main reason why I bought the CD; it turned out to be a huge let down on this album, they rearranged it so much that I almost didn't recognize it. Be Still My Soul is another reason why I bought it and it's good, but not great. Swing Low Sweet Chariot is where it starts to get good. The last two songs "Thou Gracious God, Whose Mercy Lends"
and "Come, Let Us Anew" are very good reasons to buy this CD, they each have truely powerful passages and make the CD worth having. The Mormon Tabernacle Choirs 2006 release entitled Then Sings My Soul is by far the best that I've heard from them.

5 out of 5 stars This CD Deserves SIX Stars!.......2005-11-05

However, the rating scale has a limit of five. I own over 700 CDs of virtually every type of music. Peace Like A River belongs in a class by itself! I've never written a review before but, after listening to this STUNNING performance by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, I feel compelled to share my praise with that of the five other reviewers. If I were limited to one word, I would use the word "SUPERB" to describe this beautiful and moving CD. SIX stars for Peace Like a River! BRAVO!!!

5 out of 5 stars every good adjective .......2005-08-06

This album is all beauty and solace. The singing is pristine, the arrangements lush and often stirring--never saccharine. As with the previous reviewer, my first listing of "Peace Like a River" brought me to tears (especially "Peace Like a River," the sopranos in "Swing Low," and the bagpipes in "Thou Gracious God"). Buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous!.......2005-05-29

The perfect recording to help you recover from a long, hard day. Showcasing the MTC's "new" sound in contemporary choral arrangements with its own orchestra and conductor, "Peace Like a River" brought tears to my eyes in selection after selection during my first listen -- and I'm not normally an emotional person! The title song together with "Deep River," "Swing Low" and "Be Still My Soul" are alone worth the cost of the recording. Get this one!

1 out of 5 stars How can you call these "Hymns".......2006-08-05

Not to harp on anyone here, but it's obvious that none of you grew up in a church or environment that had a good choir. I know, a Hymn is a genre of music, but a recording of a hymn isn't one if it doesn't contain HARMONY. If they're a "choir," then why don't the tenors sing a different note than the sopranos, altos, and basses? The organist is quite good, I'll admit, but you're wasting your time if you're looking for a good recording of these beautiful songs that were COMPOSED with harmony, not unison. If they want to sing in unison like this, they need to be stripped of their "choir" status and simply be called a "group."

5 out of 5 stars wonderful collection of magnificent music.......2006-01-18

Most everything on this CD is very well done. The recording environment might have been less than perfect, but that shouldn't dimish one's enjoyment very much. Most of the arrangements are very traditional, with the notable exception of Amazing Grace, which though it isn't terrible, it isn't very good either. Some songs had verses removed, which is understandable, though it was poorly done in Eternal Father, Strong to Save -- they did verse 1 ("Eternal Father"), then they skipped(!!!) verse 2 ("O Christ, the Lord") and went on to the final verses ("Holy Spirit" and "O Trinity") -- which is skipping Someone important! However, outside of that, it was excellent.

If you like sacred music, or hymns, then you'll thoroughly enjoy this CD. If you're a Christian, you should enjoy this as well, no matter your taste in music (and you might just learn to like hymns as well!). It is a well-chosen set of some of the most magnificent, God-honoring music of all time, done is a mostly very traditional manner, and it was done well.

3 out of 5 stars Flawed but enjoyable.......2005-04-15

The huge size and reverberating acoustics of Washington National Cathedral make it difficult to hear any kind of live choral performance clearly, even if you're sitting in the front rows in the nave. The Cathedral Choral Society is handicapped by having to record in this acoustically mushy space, and it shows in this CD, often creating an uneven balance between the organ and the chorus as noted by other reviewers. The repertoire is well-chosen, but the quality of the arrangements is uneven. Too often, the chorus seems to be singing in unison right out of the Hymnal, like any parish church choir at an ordinary Sunday service. Certain pieces do suggest the heights which the Society is capable of attaining. But the group never achieves the splendor that the Cathedral Choir of Men and Boys displays every Sunday morning. Just when the Society seems to be getting there, the conductor pulls them back. And the shrill folk arrangement of "Amazing Grace" will have you covering your ears as the sopranos shriek clumsily, confusing volume with fervor.

5 out of 5 stars Hymns through the Centuries.......2002-03-18

This is not a review. I just have a question. Does "Hymns through the Centuries" contain the hymn "It is Well with my Soul?" Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars A must own for classic church music lovers.......2002-02-16

I purchased this CD just based on the titles and am very glad I did. There are only two downsides to the album. First is the fact that there isn't a companion CD with 26 more hymns! Second is picky, but I do agree with another rater that the organ could have been a little louder related to the singing. Hope you enjoy listening!

Majestic hymns sung with British accents. A great combination! I haven't noticed any objectionable sounds on my copy.

4 out of 5 stars hymns we sang in church.......2003-02-16

i grew up in a traditional presbyterian church that had a pipe organ. i wanted a cd of many of the hymns that we sang in church sung by a choir and accompanied by a pipe organ. this cd fulfilled my wishes perfectly. the hymns are performed in a very straight-forward fashion with no show-boating or excess flourishes which is exactly what i wanted. this is not gospel music but what i refer to as liturgical music to indicate that it is religious music but not gospel music. i would give it 5 stars but there is a slight hiss. other than that the recording quality is very good.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Two great British prog classics.......2003-09-06

Gracious was a British prog rock band that started off playing covers when they were students at a Catholic school. Eventually they went for much more ambitious compositions, and dropped covers altogether. The band consisted of vocalist Paul Davis who also played 12-string guitar, Martin Kitcat on piano, Mellotron, harpsichord, and Hohner electric piano, Alan Cowderoy on guitar and vocals, Tim Wheatley on bass, and Robert Lipson on drums. The band signed to Vertigo Records and released their first album in 1970 (this album also had an American release on Capitol Records, but with a different cover). Because of the band's Catholic school upbringings, it should not come as any surprise that the first half of the album would have religious themes, but don't let that scare you off. The music is some of the more complex prog I've heard from a 1970 release. The album starts off with "Introduction", with Gentle Giant-like vocal harmonies. It's also the least complex piece on the whole album. I also really dig that great guitar solo. "Heaven" starts off with some Mellotron, before kicking in to more typical Gracious fashion. "Hell" is a more dissonant piece, remininscent of what King Crimson had also done (which should come as no surprise as Gracious was Crimson's opening act). The band gets silly with them playing Offenbach's "Can-Can" and honky-tonk piano stuff that sounds like it came off a Charlie Chaplin movie. "Fugue in D Minor" is basically a classically influenced piece played on Harpsichord and bass. The last is the 16 minute epic, "Dreaming", is another great high point. I liked how the piece starts off with Kitcat playing Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata", then going through many different bizarre and twisted passages. They even poke fun "for a brief few seconds" of the Beatles' "Hey Jude". Incredible stuff indeed. This Is... was their 1971 followup, but because Vertigo Records rejected it, it wouldn't be until 1972 when Philips released it, by which point the band had broken up. The cover was done by Roger Dean, but the artwork looks very little like anything off a Yes album. Some people consider this to be a superior album and here's why: the music is more accessible and less complex. Also the music seems to flow more, there is less of the classical feel, and less of that Crimson-like dissonance. Martin Kitcat uses much more Mellotron here as well, but the harpsichord and electric piano seemed to have vanished. The album starts with the side length suite "Super Nova". It starts off sounding like certain Krautrock bands of that time like Amon Düül II or early Ohr Records-era Tangerine Dream for the first couple of minutes, before going in to more typical British prog territory. I always felt the first two movements are the best, nothing short of incredible, then the band went in to a more ballad mood for the final two movements, which has grown on me, doesn't quite match up to the first half. "What Comes to Be" was supposed to be part of the "Super Nova" suite, but couldn't fit due to time constraint of the LP, so it was placed on what would be side two of the LP right after "C.B.S.". Regardless, "What Comes to Be" is by far the best ballad on this album. The rest of the album consists of great jams and tunes, and a somewhat more direct approach than their debut. I have a real difficult time determining which of the two is the better albums As a big fan of prog rock, like myself, I can very highly recommend this 2-for-1 CD reissue from BGO.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, seldom-heard progressive rock from England.......2002-08-03

This set contains both "Gracious" and "This is," which are the only two albums the band recorded before disbanding in 1972. During the time they were in operation, they apparently developed a reputation for being excellent live performers. A proficient five-piece band, their sound has much in common with the Beatles, the Moody Blues, and King Crimson. In fact, there are places on the first CD in which the singer sounds so uncannily like Paul McCartney that I had to double check the liner notes to be sure Mr. McCartney wasn't in fact guesting. Those who remember the band remember it for these influences as well as for keyboard player Martin Kitcat's highly percussive mellotron technique, which is actually more to the fore on "This is." Yes, there's lots of good mellotron bits on both of these, all done very tastefully, too. Other instrumentation includes drums, bass, electric guitar, 12-string guitar, piano, harpsichord, a wonderfully nastilly-distorted Hohner electric piano, sound effects, and great lead and harmony vocals. Production values in general are pretty good considering the time period that this was out, too.

Each original album had five tracks, and of these five, each had one very long track. The first CD contains some tongue-in-cheek silliness on the tracks "Hell" and "The Dream" which may put off some listeners, but I didn't mind it at all. Also, there's a very baroque-sounding piece featuring acoustic guitars and harpsichord called "Fugue in D Minor" that sounds very much out of place on this album, though it is excellently played. The second CD overall has a darker feel to it and displays a bit more musical complexity. Some prefer this to the first one, but overall I'd rate them about the same because there are also a couple of filler-like tracks on "This Is." When you hear these, I think you'll agree that it's a shame these guys never made it bigger than they did. After that, you'll probably be as puzzled as I was as to why you'd never heard of these guys before!

This is a good deal for two CDs. In England, vinyl copies of either of Gracious' albums go for large sums, but you can do yourself a big favor and pick up both relatively cheaply on this double CD reissue. There's a very detailed and well-written booklet that comes with it that will tell you all about the band. If you like the Beatles, the Moody Blues, and "In The Court of the Crimson King"-era King Crimson, you're sure to get a kick out of this. I play both of these CDs constantly. For me, finding these was almost like finding buried treasure. "Gracious" and "This Is" are really very good. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Good Gracious!!!!.......2000-09-03

KING CRIMSON meets the MOODY BLUES. That's the best way to describe this album. The most awesomely mind blowing cut, for me, is "Blood Red Sun". Definitely their finest hour. Good vocals. Great musicianship. SUPERB MELLOTRON!!! This album is a progressive rock gem. Good Gracious!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Lost Gem!.......1999-07-04

Along with Bodast and Spring, this has got to be one of my favorite Bands Nobody's Ever Heard Of....beautiful harmonies, some kickass guitar, and absolutely wonderful Mellotron playing. (If you're a 'Tron fan, you HAVE to get this CD!) I like "This Is" better than their 1st album, though the opening track is pretty awesome. A good bargain, and a great record.

4 out of 5 stars Progressive music that was ahead of its time!.......1999-06-16

I first heard Gracious in 1972 on an underground music program that aired on an AM station in Pittsburgh. By this time the band had broken up, but the demand for the album was so strong that it was re-released and became a top-seller in the area. Gracious blends hard-driving rhythms with gentle melodies to produce an album that should be in every progressive rock lover's collection. While the lyrics are forgetable, the instrumentation is outstanding. My favorite songs are Heaven and Dream. As a 2-CD set it's well worth the price. Genesis' Nursery Cryme has similar qualities to these Gracious offerings.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Purcell compositions.......2004-10-07

According to the liner notes, this first volume contains works that span throughout the whole (short) career of Purcell. Even his earliest anthems written when he was a teenager demonstrate that he was a genious from the beginning. The King Purcell demonstrates a composer at the same level as Bach in talent and depth.
The performances could not be bettered. The singers, choir and orchestra bring their all to these pieces.
The 11 volumes are expensive but really belong in every classical music lover's collection. Buy as many as you can afford.

5 out of 5 stars The entire set is outstanding.......2003-01-16

While some of the works are superior to others the entire set is great in the realm of production. Mostly all of these pieces are just superb and if you are someone who enjoys English Baroque then you absolutely MUST purchase these cds. If you enjoy complex, melancholic or heroic music then I urge you to purchase this cd and the rest of the volumes in the set...you won't be disappointed.

This is the second, and the lesser, volume of pianist Joanne Polk's Amy Beach series. It includes a couple of fairly substantial pieces, the Prelude and Fugue and the Ballade, along with a collection of the relatively trivial music that made up most of the piano works of Beach and her contemporaries. Her chamber music includes some hefty pieces that show her at her best, but most of this music shows her fitting in with her era. It's not to be despised, but this isn't the most significant music in the world. It is, however, extremely well played and recorded. --Leslie Gerber

4 out of 5 stars Beach, the New Age Composer.......2001-11-01

Recently, I discovered a score for one of Beach's two hermit thrush pieces at the Dartmouth College Bookstore. Since I am from Vermont, and the hermit thrush is the Vermont state bird, I was more than intrigued by this piece: "A Hermit Thrush at Morn." I was amazed to find how modern this piece sounded, at least for the day in which it was written. Parts of it were based on the Wagnerian style so common in late nineteenth century music, but there was a feel about this, as though the bird whose song she had copied had unwittingly dragged her into the modern era. While I would not avoid listening to Beach's more substantial works on this CD, such as the stodgy "Prelude and Fugue, op. 81," I find Beach is more interesting in her shorter pieces which are full of fun and good humor. You should also check out the last CD in this set, FIRE-FLIES.

4 out of 5 stars BEACH AT HER BEST.......2000-10-25

Beach is a talent of no small measure when it comes to piano music, and Polk a more than worthy advocate.

The opening Valse-Caprice, Op. 4 is delightful: piquant with a hint of melancholy, as is The Fair Hills of Eire, Op. 91, and Les Reves de Columbine, Op. 65, works comprised of thoroughly enjoyable, intimate miniatures. Especially enthralling, though, are the two pieces of Op. 92 ("The Hermit Thrush At Eve" and "The Hermit Thrush At Morn"). These solitary, mournful works, which Beach actually composed using precise birdsong--- marvelously!--- are haunting and unforgettable. Overtly enterprising are Beach's attempts at the larger spectrum, such as the Ballade, Op. 6 and her Prelude and Fugue, Op. 81. Perhaps there is too much fiery display, with little actual substance; but the pieces, though, are still engaging.

Polk shows herself to be a pianist of imagination, fine touch and a genuine kinship. Beautiful sound matches her beautiful performance.

    [Running time: 67:03]

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Lou Donaldson album.......2002-04-05

Lou Donaldson made a lot of fine recordings since the 50's. I especially love this album. Lou is at his best, playing the blues, the bossa nova (Caracas), the gospel (superb Holy Ghost) and a nice ballad (Don't worry). This is also my favorite John Patton album as he has several wonderful solos with big chords.

4 out of 5 stars Not his best, but good.......2000-09-14

Fans of Grant Green will want to own this one, as will fans of Lou Donaldson of course. Not the best place to start if you are looking to get into this devotee of Charlie Parker-turned organ combo alto saxophonist. Blues Walk or Best of (on Blue Note) earn that distinction.

5 out of 5 stars Great Disc with Great Personel........2000-03-13

Wow. This set from masters, Lou Donaldson, Big John Patton, Ben Dixon, and Grant Green is truely killer. Tasty swinging grooves abound and nearly ever song is worth listening to over and over. I love this disc, and I would bet you will too.

Marcel Dupré is an important historical as well as musical figure, his compositional freedom linking the golden age of Widor and Vierne with the radical rethinking that Messiaen saw through in his great organ cycles. Never doing things by halves, Naxos has reached Volume 9 of the complete organ works--mainly chamber pieces involving organ. Most substantial is the "Trio for Violin, Cello, and Organ," in one sense a throwback to the Baroque line of trio sonatas, but with a harmonic richness that indicates a late-19th-century inheritance--thoughtful, undemonstrative music, persuasively realized by Bruce Neswick and colleagues. The "Quartet" adds a viola to the lineup, but a delightful scherzando apart is a lesser affair, while the "Sonata for Cello and Organ" is a modest but interesting work (at least for the way Dupré makes a telling contrast between the sonorities of the two instruments). Again, perceptive playing from Neswick, whose Indiana organ has a clear, bright sound that makes the generous selection of Chorales interesting for the listener as well as the player. At the price, a worthwhile collection of some unusual repertoire. --Richard Whitehouse
