2 out of 5 stars Debut.......2003-04-05

I had allways heard that At the gates were kings of gothenburg deathmetal but after picking up this album I began to doubt. Released in 91', this was maybe the first album to start the new wave from Sweden. It is not very good but it was very important for the genre back then. The music is not at all as advanced as it is on the next album. It sounds very dark and not as melodic as later albums. Yet it's a must have. At The Gates is a great band with many cool ideas. This Cd is not bad but unlike other bands from GBG, their debut wasn't that good. The developing proces from this to the next Cd released in 92'is enourmous. This is just a debut that sounds like a typical deathmetal cd of an okay deathmetalband. The next cd would be more complex and three times as good.

5 out of 5 stars The Garden of Eden for Swede Deth Metal.......2002-02-23

Grotesque spawned At the Gates, the godfathers of the Gothenburg sound. This early compilation rumbles magnificiently from track one to track fifteen, a lengthy CD in the world of fast and furious metal; this should be twice as long. Crisp licks, intricate harmony and vicious vocals only hint at the great things to come from this group, whose current configuration forms the core of The Haunted. If you are reading this review, you are curious about Gothenburg/Scandinavian metal and you WILL LOVE this album. Own it, and praise the Grand Demon.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best and Most unique Metal recordings ever!.......2005-10-12

I just recently started listening to this band after relistening to my Soilwork albums and realizing how good they were. So I went out and got this and 'Slaughter' and as much as that album set the sound from all Melodic Death to following this EP is even better and more original. To start this doesn't sound or feel like the At The Gates of latter. This is a very dark EP. The vocals are more growled than shouted and they have noticeable Black Metal influence. I myself am not a fan black metal but the infuence here makes for a better listen. A few of songs also use keybroads, very nicely I might ad. They give the music an aura of mystery. I would say this EP is like a dark Death/Black album with an extreme Doom Metal feeling. It just plain rules. Buy it NOW! P.S. 'All Life Ends' is the best song here. But there are no bad ones.

Not the most original thing out there, Sahg's music consists of playing a somewhat updated version of Black Sabbath with some ferocity thrown in. But where bands like Electric Wizard have succeeded, this is where Sahg's music fails. It simply doesn't grab your attention. Sure, the standard and in-your-face nature of the compositions here might win fans of the old-school doom bands, but doom bands- being limited to the options they have-often struggle to create something that will expand an already limited sub-genre. Sahg does create at times some good moments in their music, but the rest of the music is simply stuff we've heard before. Doom fans will most likely devour this.

3 out of 5 stars Not Melodic Death Metal, but still worth hearing.......2006-05-14

Well, this is very far from the At The Gates that we've come to know and love, or hate. Personally, yes I do like At The Gates, and this is different from any of their later works. First and foremost, this has a much greater Swedish Death Metal influence than any of thier later works, complete with slow doomy sections, eerie tremelo picking, and the occassional keyboard line. It also has a much more evil atmosphere Also, Tomas Lindbergs' vocal performance is different, showcasing deep growls with the occasional whispered section. Whereas later At The Gates was much more melodic and straighforward, this particular album is much more evil, dark, brutal. It is about on the same level of technicality as With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness, or The Red In The Sky Is Ours. However as opposed to those albums, this EP has very little in the way of melody. A few melodically tinged riffs emerge in the form of haunting tremelo picked riffs, but not much more than that. There are also some fairly evil keyboards on occasion. The song structures are entirely narrative, and there are no choruses or verses in sight. In this, I applaud them on their songwriting skills, and their technicality. However, the riffs can sometimes be quite forgettable despite their technicality, and this is the biggest flaw of the EP. It is technical, complex, and evil, but the riffs are not written as well as they could've been. The highlight of the album is definitly "All Life Ends" for its whispered vocals, keyboard work, and better riff writing than the other songs on the EP. Check out this album if you'd like to hear a more technical version of Swedish Death Metal.
