This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

I remember when I was little, I had this cd, but i lost it. I bought a similiar type of one through TIme Life and decided to try the Classical Thunder one. I have like it so far.

Masterful!.......2005-06-15

This two CD set is magnificent. I got the set in the early 1990's when it was advertised on television, along with other releases in Time Life's set. I was struck by the interpretations of the conductors. Whenever I hear these pieces now, I judge them against this recording. Amazing selection as well. There are staples of orchestra repetoire, like Beethoven symphonies, but also gems that are not heard very often, like the Rimsky-Korsakov "Procession of the Nobles." A very impressive recording.

Great CD of Classical music's power pieces!.......2005-06-07

I got this CD when I was around 16 because I loved a lot of the music on this double CD set. As a student pursuing a Music Education major, it has been a great asset for my musically, and just great for listening to. I will drive on short trips and take this with me and blast it louder than the guy in the next car blasting rap music. I also take it skiing as it sets a great tempo down the mountain. This is a great CD for anyone that loves music.

I love it for its intricate harmonies (I love to sing along in harmony) and its brilliant, original, and hysterical lyrics. Pity Party is my absolute favorite. These ladies have a scathing sense of humor. My two year old, autistic daughter is completely enchanted by this CD, as well. I expect we'll be playing a whole lot of it in the Mommy-mobile for many years to come.

I bought this CD based on the name of the group, and the name of the CD, just having heard the little bitty preview on Amazon and I'm glad I did. It is intelligent humor; entertaining musically as all three women are talented both in voice and instrument. Sometimes, in the Craft, we take ourselves a little bit too seriously. This is an excellent reminder that there's another side to it all.

I love this cd. The eclectic mix of music that sing about the mundane and make it so fun. I enjoy just singing along with these women. They have done a great job and made a wonderful cd. This album is quirky and light-hearted and well worth the money spent on it. Great music!

Anything by the 'sisters is great. C'mon, how many voices wax poetic about Iowa? This CD is solid and well thought out, with vocals that penetrate the mind; and enrich the believers nights. The Los Angeles-based Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys play roots music that calls to mind the days when country and western and rock & roll were but two sides of the same coin. Robert has really outdone himself here, his vocals sound so great on the title track. The steel guitar work is exellent, the bands musicianship is top notch(they can play anything from straight ahaed jazz to hillbilly boogie. This cd swings all the way thru and is highlighted by the title track, Money Tree, Bayou Blue, Chalk It Up To Yhe Blues and the haunting I Am But A Dreamer. Great stuff, if you like rockabilly and/or western swing with touches of hillbilly boogie woogie.

This is going to be a killer review. Just so you know. When i first listened to this i was like, hey man, where's the nice snappy easy listening tunes??? I wasn't in to it. But, upon reflection on the fact that ..How could Sandy and the boys put out someting i didn't like?? I put it in again. What is so dang killer about Sandy is he takes old school and gives it to you in such a different way, it doesnt make sense right away. I sat down, gave it a direct listen, and hey, it's a great record, plain and simple

Sandy is such a great singer. You are a true talent my man. Your voice keeps my place warm at night. Where are the Sinatra's of our generation. Here's the guy.

Jimmy Roy plays some killer steel guitar, man, you just gotta love that instrument. Such an extension, it's killer.

Bobby Trimble is like a freightrane back there. I've never heard anyone with such perfect timing, although Brian Fahey rings a bell.

Jeff West is thumpin along back there. That must be a killer instrument to play, the steering wheel of the band.

Ashley Kingman has such a great feel on his pick, you can really tell the difference, and it makes for some unique sounds.

This album is heaven my friends. I'm takin this one to the other side.

A very catchy album. Several hints of hints of doo-wop with that insatiable Fly-Rite swing. A little surf rock. A little pizzacato by Ashley. Jimmy Roy on steel. Bobby, keeping the beat. Slappin' bass. Sandy crooning. Man, what a good thing!
"Catalina" and "Money Tree" (sung by Jeff, the upright player)
stay with you long after the playing is done. Hey, all the songs are good'ns, though.
See them on their current tour and you'll appreciate the band even more.

Big Sandy and His Fly Rite Boys continue to be the premier rockin' country, hillbilly and rockabilly band in the United States. "It's Time" is a return to the Big Sandy sound that we've all known and loved all these years. The album was recorded LIVE on vintage equipment at Joey's Place (former Electro Vox studios) and features Ashley Kingman on lead guitar, Bobby Trimble on drums, Jeff West on upright bass and new-comer Jimmy Roy on steel and electric guitar.

With all the flair and authenticity of western swing bands gone by, Big Sandy brings his own buttery smooth vocals, superb song writing and originality to the genre. Not just a rehash of old or cover material, "It's Time" really brings out a new vitality and strength in these recordings. My favorites are the rocker "Chalk It Up to the Blues", "Bayou Blue", "It's Time", and "Catalina".

Yeah, this is the good stuff. Big Sandy is no imitator in any sense that matters; the classic sounds of the '50s are just there, pumping in his veins, which flow to a heart that could as easily belong to Buddy Holly or Eddie Cochran or Johnny Burnette or hundreds of others undeservedly forgotten. He sings, plays, and writes in a style whose inspiration is unmistakable but which, just as unmistakably, is still his own. In a sane world, there'd always be a place, not too far away, where the juke box sounds like this, crazy with jittery rockabilly, swamp rock, jumpin' honkytonk, silky ballads, and surf-guitar instrumentals like the terrific "Strollin' with Mary Jane." It all ends with the melancholy, dreamy "The Night Is for Dreamers," which seems eerily, beautifully outside time, somewhere out there in the stars.

The folkie voices of Brenda Sutton, Teresa Gibson-Powell and harpist Gwen Knighton blend together to create an unusual mixture of folk, and celtic blend. Many of the songs written by the artist themselves seem to lead toward the Celtic,Scottish story telling legend style. Most of the songs are fun from Sex in the Morning to a more haunting forget me not song by harpist Gwen Knighton. Teresa's bass riff adds a chilling trill throughout the songs,giving them that "take me away" quality,her voice adding the higher blending notes. The group is young in maturity,but show with this CD that their talent can take them to that next level of audience listening. The Cd has that tendency to think a fast spoken,fast beat song is a better song. This Cd will be a keep for those Lorene McKennitt, Enya fans.

One Last Reunion On Record.......2006-08-28

Although Can, for all intended purposes was finished, after a few albums that could not find their way forward--to a new original sound--nor backwards--matching the inventiveness of the early Seventies--reunited with Malcolm Mooney, their original singer for one more album.

Rite Time is no masterpiece yet it holds a few treasures in its own right. Perhaps inspired by Mooney's presence, and Czukay settled back on bass, the music contained here truly satisfies in tracks like "On The Beautiful Side Of A Romance"--where the late Karoli lets it rip--and "The Withoutlaw Man"--with its sinuous and long riff and Mooney's best vocal in the whole record. The bluesy "Like A New Child" also merits mention showing that the level of musicianship already achieved in their classic Future Days could reach still new heights.

Again, this is far from classic or flawless by Can standards, yet what it might lack in innovation is offered fully in their performance. Not a place to start nor a necessary purchase unless you a true fan, Rite Time holds its own.

Atypical Can but Outstanding Never the Less.......2005-05-10

Malcolm Mooney reunites with the band and puts up eight GREAT songs. The sounds are jazzy, poppy, polished, upbeat and raw. The songs are more structured than typical Can but the record is like a breath of fresh air. Highly recommend this one whether you're a Can fan or not.

A Few Worthwhile Moments.......2001-05-05

The vocal-centered tracks are pretty weak. "Monster Movie" this isn't, despite the reunion with Malcolm Mooney.

But "Like A New Child" is great music, and "Beautiful Side of a Romance" is pretty good. I wish they'd try to work together some more because there is something special there, at least sometimes, still.

never too late for the rite time.......2000-10-24

rite time came not a moment too soon, better late than never, with timing impecably ... rite? Malcolm Mooney rejoins the group for a belated reunion (1989, long after the group disbanded, and even longer since malcolm left). He sounds better than ever, the layover (almost 20 years) seems to have been good for him. 3 of the tracks are absolutely brilliant: the withoutlaw man, hoolah hoolah, and the funked-up "give the drummer some". The other tracks are only good-excellent, which is why this is only a 4-star can album.

This is the last can album recorded, and it shows just how much creative talent the old guys have. As the last song says, "in the distance lies the future"... lets have another. It doesn't seem to matter how old they get, can still delivers the genius. Malcolm's rough-and-funky vocals work with the badass liebeszeit beat better than ever, and the counterpoint with karoli's acid-space guitar is a joy for the ear. They got it rite all rite, once more for the road.
