4 out of 5 stars Man has achieved miracles in every field of human endeavour, except crime!.......2005-09-10

This is a collection of "super spy instrumentals". Some of the tunes are from classic spy movies and TV shows, and some tunes are original compositions in the style of old spy music. My favorites are "Mission: Impossible" by Laika & the Cosmonauts, "A Shot in the Dark" by Combustible Edison and "Goldfinger" by Man or Astroman?. This is a fun CD that should appeal to fans of old spy movie soundtracks.

4 out of 5 stars Great re-thinks of classic spy music........1998-09-07

A great CD - especially if you enjoy different "takes" on music genres - in this case, spy music. You can't go wrong with an album that features (among others) MAN OR ASTROMAN? and COMBUSTIBLE EDISON.

      Amazon.com

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley

      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20

this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.

Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.

Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.

      5 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2005-02-24

Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.

3 out of 5 stars Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10

I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.

4 out of 5 stars The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28

Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.

3 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08

This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.

Maybe the best electronic music album ever (I listen to electronic music since 1985).
Some of the best classical club anthems are here.
I think "Throw" is the best, listening at it in a club is just special.

      1 out of 5 stars I don't get it........2000-06-18

This album thoroughly disappointed me. In fact, this album embodies all of the classic criticisms of techno. It's simplistic, repetitive, uninspired and lacks any soul. Most tracks on the album go nowhere and it's generally boring. It took me three weeks to get through the entire album. This was due to the fact that I could not listen to the entire thing in one sitting. Occasionally, I attempt to listen to the album, in the hope that I have missed something but, I fail to see any redeeming qualities to this CD. This album pains me to listen to. I was so disappointed by this purchase that I have considered throwing it away but, I have decided to give it to a friend, instead. In sum, don't buy it unless you've already heard it.

      5 out of 5 stars essential electronic.......1999-11-16

That someone doesnt like this album is no surprise. It's not to everyone's taste. My grandmother wouldnt understand it. Personally, it took me a few listens to really get into it, but once in, you really appreciate what a superb piece of work it is. definately a must-have for any fan of experimental electronic music

5 out of 5 stars "Secret Tapes" is one of the best techno albums ever.......1999-03-13

I'm a big fan of electronic dance music, and own a few 100 CDs of them. "The Secret Tapes of Dr. Eich", which I have had for a few years now, is among the top 5. Every one of the tracks is a sublime collection of minimal elements bound together to form a compelling track. I love this music both in the ambient sense (playing it as non-intrusive background atmosphere), and to actually listen closely to the intricate development of all tracks, built from at most four distinct simple elements at a time. This is the best the Detroit techno scene has to offer, and that's saying something.

      5 out of 5 stars I can't believe someone didn't like this........1999-02-25

That anybody would dislike this album so much as to write such a negative review is beyond me. This album is simply wonderful. There's not a single track here that doesn't shine. Carl Craig became a musical hero of mine after I heard this album for the first time. I had heard some songs of his previously, some of which appear on this album, but never made the connection to the artist. Slam Dance, The Climax, & Parking Garage Politics are all reasons enough to buy this album. Anybody who appreciates fine craftsmanship will love this record. It beats the pants off of nearly all other house music I've heard. The longevity of these songs in such a competitive and newness-obsessed market is illustrative of how profound this man's ideas were and still are.

5 out of 5 stars Endearing Collection from John Barry's Early Films.......2006-09-28

This is a very good collection of John Barry's film music from the 1960's. Besides the various James Bond film themes, impressive selections such as THE IPCRESS FILE, KING RAT and THE CHASE are included. "Wednesday's Child" from the QUILLER MEMORANDUM is very good. There is not a bad cut in the bunch.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT MUSIC BY A GREAT COMPOSER.......2003-11-10

IF THIS CD ONLY HAD "WE HAVE ALL THE TIME IN THE WORLD", IT WOULD BE WORTH THE PRICE AND THEN SOME. I FIRST HEARD THIS ARRANGEMENT IN 1981 ON AN EASY LISTENING RADIO STATION IN CHICAGO AND FELL IN LOVE WITH IT. THERE ARE OTHER GOOD SONGS AS WELL ON THIS CD LIKE "FUN CITY", "WEDNESDAY'S CHILD", AND "NEXT TIME".

5 out of 5 stars INVENTIVENESS FOR ORCHESTRAL COLORS, INFLECTIONS, RHYTHMS.......1998-06-25

After searching my music collection for my very favorite albums, I tried to locate the same artists at [Amazon.Com]. I really liked "The Living Daylights" a 007 James Bond thriller produced by John Barry (Warner Brothers 1987). Has anyone heard of John Barry? Evidently he is a quiet and secluded man but he has composed music for quite a few box office film hits, some in the James Bond series. All the tracks on this album are good but I especially liked Thunderball (Track 11) and Goldfinger (Track 17). John Barry is very versatile in his music style but several have that "suspense" feel and bold, base, brass leads. The insert describes his music as "inventiveness for orchestral colors and infectious rhythms; his gift for melody majestically sweeping or deceptively simple". I agree. You'll like this album - most likely all of the 17 tracks with 53 minutes of play.

5 out of 5 stars John Barry revisits his classic themes circa 1968.......1998-05-20

This collection is culled from John Barry's brief association with Columbia records in the sixties. Dull cover art betrays the fact that this is the best John Barry compilation for your money. "The James Bond Theme" has never sounded better, and Barry turns his rather stoic theme for "The Lion in Winter" into a intensive workout for jazz organ. Other hard to find anywhere else themes include "The Ipcress File," "The Quiller Memorandum," and "The Wrong Box." The sixties really did swing!

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation of contemporary instrumentals.......2002-10-22

This is a really nice comp of many surf, cocktail, instrumental bands including Satan's Pilgrims, Los Straitjackets (what-do-ya-know, I spelled it right for a change!), Deadbolt, etc. What's even more cool is that the CD case has a built-in decoder ring! Too bad you can't dance to a decoder ring.

This CD is worth tracking down.
