On her debut album, Jana McCall eschews the bittersweet strains offered by the bulk of today's pop singers, preferring, rather, to lean towards more subdued, shimmery vocal stylings. There's something unnervingly Nico-esque about her lilting voice, fusing the modest 10 tracks on her record with a slightly retro, acid rock ambience. For the most part, it's an alluring approach - think Mazzy Star after a few good, strong cups of coffee. "Today" and "I Want You" rev up the tempo without falling into hackneyed garage rock territory. On "Again and Again" and "Deep in Blue," McCall goes where she seems the most comfortable, into haunting balladry that revolves around slow-burn percussions and the singer's echoey soprano. Jana McCall is a mood trip, for sure, but one that repeatedly draws you back for a closer listen.--Nick Heil

5 out of 5 stars Jana McCall. Quite a gem........2006-06-05

I'd agree that it's along the lines of the Mazzy Star psychedelic folk sound, but this has a bit more tempo and edge in terms of the music. The songs swirl and churn while Jana's longing, mournful voice haunts you deep within. My favorite tracks are "Today", "Again and Again", "Deep in Blue", and "Denied". I love putting on this album when I just want to relax and, oddly enough, find some comfort.

4 out of 5 stars Dreamy Explorations.......1998-08-24

Jana McCall's first solo album is awash with sparse, uncluttered musical structures that mingle with her plaintive vocals, evoking an ethereal impression which lingers like a pleasant memory. Her haunting, mesmerizing songs are the complete antithesis of her previous musical affiliation with the outrageous Seattle grunge grrrls of Dickless. The album took several years to complete during which time she underwent major life changes--moving to the small town of Ellensburg, Washington and giving birth to her son, but the album plays with unexpected cohesiveness. McCall worked with a number of collaborators to find the perfect sound, the only constant being her drummer, Mark Pickerel (formerly of the Screaming Trees and currently with Truly.) Two cover songs appear together in the middle of the album, Gun Club's "Mother of Earth" and Action Now's "I Want You." These songs serve as an intermission between her original material, which is infinitely superior in conveying her serene style. Dreamy explorations on "Deep In Blue" and "Denied" cover topics of deceit and anguish and yet a certain detachment from personal pain permeates the lyrics which allows her to float above such corporeal matters. Jana McCall's solo debut is a beautiful, tranquilly spatial album that inspires repeated listening.

5 out of 5 stars Haunting, sinourous debut........1998-05-08

Jana McCall's debut CD on Up! records is filled with rapturous, swirling songs. The band consists of members of the Ruby Doe, and former drummer for the Screaming Trees Mark Pickerel. They lay down solid, hypnotic tracks which are filled - over and around - by McCall's edgy-yet-very-sweet vocals. Buy it buy it buy it!

5 out of 5 stars A must have cd!!.......2002-08-29

This cd is amazing. If you like Mazzy Star, you will love this because Janas music is more dynamic and even more melancholy. The richness and honesty of her voice is so beautiful and at times disturbing. I am surprised at the lack of attention she is getting, although I have seen some good reviews(even one in interview magazine) and I have heard her on college radio but still shes comparable if not, better, than some of the indie females who are selling records like mad. Even someone like Norah jones, who is nominated for a mtv award. This music is totally accessible while maintaining an edge...she doesnt totally sell out on the pretty girl music thing, and that might be the problem. Maybe the mainstream music world isnt ready for such real sadness coming from a woman who writes such thought provoking lyrics.Maybe most people want their girl rock(or folk) to be sugar coated, but this is more than girl music...this is just simply put, beautiful music.
