Dissapointing.......2004-05-15
I actually only have this album along with the live album. Trying to find Cro-mags albums is like looking for a needle in a haystack. Hopefully I will be able to find some soon... Anyway what about this album? In comparison to their other albums (and yes that includes Alpha Omega!), this is a bit of a letdown. The first track 'Say good-bye to mother earth' starts the album off well and is of the usual high quality we've come to expect from the 'Mags. The rest of the album is OK, nothing particulary special, but still fairly listenable. It is also alot more metal than previously, and is a far cry from the 'Age of Quarrell' or even 'Best Wishes' days of yore. It is slower and has a few more ballads on it. This is both good and bad. Good because they are fairly well constructred, but bad because the album is never able to gain any sort of momentum as a result of this more 'slowed down' approach.
This is not what bothers me though, what really ruins it for me is track three, 'War on the Streets'. Reading that title you would guess you would be in for a slab of brutal all out hardcore, however you would be sadly mistaken. On listening to this track, I could not believe what was coming out of my speakers! What I was confronted with was probably the cheesiest and stupidest song that these guys have ever recorded. On listening to it, I thought I might have picked up an Aerosmith or Guns and Roses cd by accident! (ugh). I tried to skip on to the next track to try and ignore the horror of what I'd just heard, but the damage was done, and as a result the rest of the album was ruined for me. I hope no-one has to suffer what I had to endure! and also was the original version of Other side of madness so good that we had to have it covered again here?
Overall this was a fairly average album, with a couple of good songs. I would have rated it higher but for THAT one song. If your wanting to get into this classic HC band get their other albums first and maybe pick this up if it's going cheap like I did.
Near Death??? This one put the nails in the coffin.........2004-01-04
As a true Cro-Mags fan I had to purchase this album. But let me tell you, I know that during the time this came out the band was not talking to eachother and pretty much said it was through. What I did not realize is that whomever mixed/produced/engineered this CD must have hated them too. There is some good music but it is so badly mixed that it pretty much kills it. Even though the Cro-Mags have had their personal differences with eachother, I am glad that they put them aside to put out 'Revenge'. Also, re-releasing classic tracks on 'Before the Quarrel' which is a great CD for any Cro-Mags fan. Check out Harley's new band 'Harley's War'.

Album Description
The Side Effects of Dying, the debut CD from the singer/songwriter duo Reynolds Robinson, offers a very tongue-in-cheek look at Pam Reynolds' benchmark clinical death experience case that continues to rattle the foundations of science worldwide.
Since 1991, the name of Atlanta-based Pam Reynolds has been synonymous with consciousness research. Television, print media and radio, both here and abroad, have detailed Pam Reynolds and her groundbreaking brain-aneurysm case. Before her clinical death experience, Pam was a classically trained multi-instrumentalist, orchestrator and songwriter.
On The Side Effects of Dying, Pam has partnered with critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Rob Robinson. A Mississippi native now based in Nashville, Rob wrote and produced three CDs with his jazz/rock band, Fearless Freap, and later formed the group Whirlybird, which released a CD that charted at college radio and Modern A/C. Pam and Rob began writing together in 2003.
The Side Effects of Dying was mixed by Rodney Mills (Atlanta Rhythm Section, Sheryl Crow) and takes the listener on a journey to the edge of consciousness and back again. Among its many highlights are the first track, "If I Live Through This," a humorous, cautionary tale about why you should never pick up women at the state fair; "Young Avenue" welcomes you to your independence with reckless abandon; "The Crying Fields" is an introspective look at the search for forgiveness; and "What Are We Waiting For?" challenges every fear that ever held you back. Two of the songs on the CD, "Coming Back to Life" and the title track, focus on Pam's near-death experience.

Heart Music.......2005-11-04
What can I say about this music? I'll not pretend to be objective. I'm a Near Death Experiencer and I find my emotions and memories being taken in some colossal hand and squeezed; sometimes tearfully, sometimes wistfully and sometimes with humour. I love the immersion that only music can engender, being at once dispersed into the field of melodic imagination and simultaneously present, riveted to the words themselves, startling into recognition that which is simply *there*. It's sung with a curiously intimate inflection that is usually associated with conversation. LOVE IT!!!!!!!
Entertaining, pure solid sound.......2005-11-02
I like this sound and I have to listen to it when I come in from the office. Even though I'm in the City, I'm transposed to the country roads with the top down and the sound turned up as high as it can go. Ah, what fun. The Side Effects Of Dying with Reynolds/Robinson is a definite for my Christmas lists. And it was inspired by a true story. What a story!

Under An Urban Bridge At Night.......2005-08-01
For the raw at heart goths, this will be a good album to listen to, if you're stuck at home with no dates to take you hang out in town. Just play this album while you're fixing yourself something to dinner prior to watch Lucky McKee's "May" on the DVD player or any good suburban horror movie, and you'll have your private party all set.
On the other hand, even though Dawn La Rue's lyrics contain some effective images, they are often strained, intended to be morbid (obviously, considering the genre), but not always succesfully. The track "Carved In Stone" surrounds you with unexpected very haunting backing vocals, (which is one of the very few artistic average highlights of the album), while La Rue's describes her routinary nightmares about speckled sills and lonesome alleyways. But she's far away of being Bauhaus.
In conclussion, you won't find any songwriting virtuosism on here, just a killing-night-time record.
Because of albums like this one, critics and people in general unfortunately think that dark rock'n'roll is only for wankers.
Great!.......2004-05-26
