Unsung heros of the Motown era.......2007-07-14
If you liked "the Motown Sound" you will be pleased to listen to the great studio musicians who were the creators of this unique, magical music. It was a surprise at first to learn that all the great Motown singers were backed up in the studio by the same incredible musicians. These CDs contain the original band of musical brothers backing up our finest young contemporary singer-artists. Much of the music was recorded live, in concert for a very lucky audience. I wish I had been there. This collection puts you there for awhile.
You could do like I have done and purchase the documentary film on dvd for your television and the CDs for your ipod.
The Funk Brothers Accompaniment Tracks.......2007-07-08
I was familiar with the movie and soundtrack, "Standing in the Shadows of Motown", and thoroughly enjoyed them both. The second disc of this set with naked instrumental remixes of the original Motown hits was a welcome suprise. In particular, hearing the bass work of James Jamerson was like a master lesson in bass playing.
Get this!!.......2007-07-05
This is great. The Funk Brothers can still cook. Liner notes are a great read. Backing tracks on disc 2 are very interesting and fun to listen to. The performances on disc 1 from the Standing in the Shadows movie are all very good. You can tell however that the voice of the late David Ruffin is sorely missed in Aint to Proud to Beg.
Get it.....it will have you dancin'.
Can't stop dancing.......2007-04-13
I purchased this CD after watching the movie. I was not disappointed! My 7 year old daughter claims that she doesn't like Mom's music and there was no way she'd be dancing when I played it. Well, she couldn't sit down! I love to dance and I love upbeat music. This is highly recommended to anyone who likes something funky to move to. Get it!
Classic Motown.......2007-03-08
I bought this CD after previously buying the DVD and watching the documentary of the Funk Brothers. Joan Osborne (whom I never heard of before this album or DVD was released) is astounding. Her rendition of "What becomes of the broken hearted" is unmatched by anyone ever. The CD sounds excellent and could not be improved in any way. Instrumental's like "Bernadette" are very well crafted with different instruments coming in as the song requires. I would buy this one again or for gifts as it is one you won't put in your CD file and not play again. I keep my copy in my car and play it several times a week. It's great fun and professionally packaged..one of the best packaged CD's I have seen so far. They did a good job on this one and it shows...in every way.

Another Immolation masterpiece.......2007-06-23
The new Immolation cd is another Immolation masterpiece. It's actually even better than Harnessing Ruin, and I love Harnessing Ruin. (as well as all of their albums) This effort seems to be a little more precise and focused than Harnessing. Also, the production and mix is a little more clear on this album. The results? This seems to be the most straight forward, to the point release so far. Kind of like Close To A World Below but the songs are all just under 4 minutes except for a few.
Another point to make is that even though this whole album seems more straight forward, they didn't lose any of their trademark Immolation songwriting ability whatsoever! It still has Bob's trademark riffing and their punishing, pummeling,Immolation whirlwind style.
It's really amazing how a band can still maintain their identity like this band has without becoming cheesy or corny or without completely changing their style.
This band is simply one of the best and most under-rated bands in all of extreme music. Highly recommended if you even just liked one of thier cd's.
Immolation: on the verge.......2007-06-12
I have to start by admitting that Immolation is one of my favorite bands: not for what they are, but for what they could be. If you listen closely to Shadows in the Light and its predecessor, Harnessing Ruin, you will find complex structures, memorable riffs, and Death Metal that is approaching a state of sophistication that other bands are not reaching.
The biggest negative Immolation is facing is their studio recording, production, and mixing. Oh, what I'd give to hear a Tue Madsen produced Immolation CD! Shadows in the light is slightly less muted and muddied than Harnessing Ruin, which is a plus. However, when you listen to Behemoth's Demigod or Kataklysm's latest, you will understand this point. Immolation just needs technical expertise to truly blast the world with superior DM.
I rated Shadows in the Light at 4 stars because of the production values. I rate Immolation as a band at 5.

5 STARS AND THEN SOME !!.......2006-02-10
Oh Julie, the songs you sang on this CD are superb. I wish you could still give us that joy. If you can only sing in the low registers, give us jazz!! You can do it I just know you can!!
Pretty Sad, .......2005-10-27
Hollywood veteran Julie Andrews has had a glorious career, but not without its downsides. Her legend is built on "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" and other glorious roles. Her abilities as a singer were never impressive or great, her voice often sounded weak, but she always knew how to sing around her very limited vocal range. On this collection she performs some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written and even though she does a good job, her voice just doesn't hold up against many of these tunes. Her warmth is felt all over the album, in "Here I'll Stay" she wraps her gentle, but narrow, voice around it and in "My Funny Valentine" she sticks to the lower register of her voice. However, in the re-recording of her classic "Sound of Music" and in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" her voice fails her, it often sounds thin and airy and it's actually quite sad to listen to. When all is said and done Julie Andrews remains a great talent, and most of that talent is largely due to her amazing capability as a performer and her genuine warmth.
I FELL IN LOVE WITH JULIE ALL OVER AGAIN.......2005-06-25
As a young kid growing up in the Philippines I remember my Dad playing his state-of-the-art Aiwa tape recorder back in the 60s and hearing Julie Andrews' voice - truly the voice of an angel! Now, hearing these songs again with adult ears I fell in love with her voice all over again !
A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27
If you are a fan of Dame Julie's and musicals, this is the cd for you. It is a compilation of songs from prevously released albums; The King and I, The Music of Richard Rodgers, Here I'll Stay, and Victor/Victoria, Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.
The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.
Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.
Climbing Every Mountain with Mary Poppins.......2002-01-22
Julie Andrews and her music have been an inspiration to me
every since I stepped into a theater and watched Mary Poppins
(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.

Packing List for Eternity.......2007-07-15
Friends, when I die, at an absolute minimum, please pack among my provisions for the journey, the following tracks from this album: Egypt, Shadows.
Mercyful Fate - King Diamond Band hybrid.......2007-01-08
King Diamonds solo rlbums never really did it for me - they lacked that raw grit in the riffs - that "chunkiness" and heaviness that MF had. Also, the concept albums stories often get in the way of concise lyrical passages, as it seems he is often trying to squeeze/shriek in tons of words to tell the story to the point that it doesn't really fit within the song structure. Andy Laroque, while an absolutely remarkable soloist, is not in the same league with Sherman and Denner in the riff department - they play these angular riffs that somehow work together. So what does this all have to do with "In the Shadows"? Well, all of the aforementioned problems are completely addressed. It has themes similar to King Diamond's solo projects, but without the forced million word vocal passages, no screaming "Grandmaaaaaaaa" or "Miriammmm", or "Jonathonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn....." 50 thousand times while describing drinking tea in a wheelchair in painful detail. No Andy Laroque - along with his "I will play the obligatory riffs for this song - so as to get to my incredible guitar solo" (and they are incredible - it may sound as if I don't like him, but I do). Instead, we get the King Daimond atmosphere, the chilling lyrics, and they are spread atop a musical backdrop that is deserving of it all - Sherman and Denner are criminally underrated - a better term may be "underknown". This work strays a bit from MF's eighties products, but mostly in the lyrics componenet, as the in your face, first person, present tense Satan-Satan-Satan stuff is exchanged for a more surreal, less straight forward story based approach, which I think displays much more musical maturity which is far less campy then their older releases. I love every track on this, my favorite being The Bell Witch. Five stars (or should it be 6!)
Is this music serious.......2006-08-25
I feel that I need to have all my predispositions of heavy music temporarily suspended to listen to this seriously. Without being in this state, this CD is just there, a monotone of metal cliche. -enjoy
After all these years, Mercy still delivers!.......2006-08-22
While perhaps not quite on the level of the classics Melissa and Don't Break The Oath, In The Shadows is a very strong reunion effort that is certainly not far behind the "classic" label. With the exception of drummer Kim Ruzz, the original line-up is fully intact on this one. Sherman and Denner, two of metal's most underrated guitarists of all time, are able to show that not only have their axe skills not slackened over the years but have actually greatly improved. In the meantime, Mr Diamond is on top of his game, as always. "Egypt" is a typically awesome Mercy opener, up there with "Evil" and "A Dangerous Meeting." Other great tracks are "The Old Oak," "Thirteen Invitations" and "Is That You Melissa?" Really, the entire album is good, no real filler on this one. Whether you are an old fan of Fate or a newcomer, pick up In The Shadows now; you will not be disappointed!
What A Comeback After So Many Years! .......2006-07-12
4 1/2 stars would probably be more accurate. For those of you who don't know this, Mercyful Fate broke up after their "Don't Break the Oath" (1984) record. (Largely due to the Satanic lyrics.) This was when King Diamond's solo career started. After 5 records, King Diamond ran into contract problems and his solo career was put on hold. Well, King Diamond ran into his former Mercyful Fate guitarist Hank Shermann and was impressed with some of his recordings. This was when Mercyful fate got back together. (Except for Drummer Kim Ruzz.) The music was once again to be top notch, and the Satanic lyrics were toned down to easier to swallow Gothic Horror lyrics. To be sure, bassist Tim Hansen and guitarist Mike Denner did stay for the first two solo King Diamond records and were thus only absent for 3 records. 'Egypt' is a great opener that indicates the magic is back. 'Bell Witch' is a haunting song supposedly based on something that really happened. 'Old Oak' keeps with the strength of the record. 'Shadows' and 'Gruesome Time' are a bit softer, but they are still haunting and well done. The 2nd half picks up with '13 Invitations.' (A strong contender for the best song on the record.) It starts slow, but it picks up as the people realize that they are playing cards with the devil. 'Room of the Golden Air' is a nice instrumental. 'Legend of the Headless Rider' is a neck and neck song with '13 Invitations' and has frightening lyrics with strong guitar work. 'Is That You Melissa?' is a song that skillfully combines horror and affection. The harpsichord touches are more than welcome. 'Return of the Vampire' is a nice bonus track. Interestingly, Mercyful Fate actually made more records AFTER the reunion. I know many people will probably disagree with me on this, but I actually think the best records came AFTER the reunion. I'll conclude by saying that with the possible exception of "Dead Again," this may actually be Mercyful Fate's best record.

Customer Reviews:
The Rockinest CL Album. One of my favorite cds ever!.......2005-09-19
I absolutely adore this album! Relative to CL's other albums, it has more eloquent lyrics than "Meander," but rocks just as hard in a more intelligent way, has stand-out songs as opposed to "Ether-Inspired Porch Music" (where the songs blend together pleasantly), is far less Celtic than "Echo Echo," and not mellow at all like "Indian Summer."
The chord progressions are phenomenal -- especially in "Summer Song" and "November/Make Believe"-- the songs will go places you won't expect and it's just amazing. I've listened to this CD hundreds of times, and the musicianship never fails to astound me. The acoustic guitar-work is to die for! Barry's voice ranges from husky to uber-clear, from smooth as silk to a rockin' scream. If you've never fallen in love with that velvet-voiced cutie Barry Privett, you need to do it now. Of all the albums, this one showcases his diverse vocal talents the best.
This is one of my favorite albums ever. It's perfect for driving -- it seemed like it was meant to be listened on a bright morning drive through the Appalachians, when you're flying at 75 mph amongst the conifers. It just makes you happy; I don't think it is possible to listen to "Shadows" and not feel uplifted.
Fans of "Indian Summer" and "Ether" might be a little shocked by this at first, but give it a few runs in your CD player before dismissing it as a an album not by the Carbon Leaf you know and love. It is first and foremost a rock album; CL has mellowed considerable since this was made in the late 90s.
See these boys live if you ever have the chance. I saw them open for Guster -- and it was Carbon Leaf that got the standing ovation, not Guster. CL should have been headlining, judging from the enthusiastic crowd reaction. They love what they do So much; their enthusiasm and love for the music is contagious.
(For reference, I listen to Andrew Bird; Jump, Little Children; Guster; The Dole; Flogging Molly; and the Folk station on Yahoo.)
Buy this album immediately, and then head over to [...] to sample many tracks off the others, find out when you can catch CL live, and admire photos of these talented and gorgeous musicians.
p.s. They are sweet in person too. :D
'Shadows' is an excellent early effort by Carbon Leaf.......2005-06-23
Before Carbon Leaf got "ether-electrified", before Carter Gravatt began rocking on a mandolin, before Barry Privett was dancing jigs with his pennywhistle, and Jordan Medas signed on and brought his strong bass chops to the group, Carbon Leaf released Shadows In The Banquet Hall. Shadows is more of a rock album, although the distinctive acoustic guitar pluck we have come to know from Carter on subsequent albums is present. That more bluegrass-tinged acoustic guitar is apparent on several songs, including Wolftrap and Fireflies, Attica's Flower Box Window and Reunion Monticello. On the rock side of the spectrum we find songs like Blind Session Eye, with its cleverly arranged guitar licks, driving beat and hard rockin' jam at the end.
The overall flow of the album is mellow and thoughtful, due in large part to Barry's intelligent, abstract, somewhat esoteric lyrics. This is not to imply that they are inaccessable though. The songs simply require a careful listener, one who is willing to let their mind travel along with the music, through the stories and emotions being expressed. An example of this is Summer Song, which is able to convey a beautiful portrait of summers come and gone through brief lyrical phrases that impart different images in the listener's mind, but still leave them free to weave those images into their own memories and experiences. Barry has an ability to create lyrics that the listener can so openly relate to and apply to his or her own life. This great talent comes into full bloom on future albums, but is doubtless evident on Shadows too.
Immediate standout songs including Flood, with its heavy bass line from then-bassist Devin McGuire and "low rock" rhythms (no doubt influenced by the band Morphine), the beautiful acoustic guitar and soft vocals on November(makebelieve), and For The Girl, with its intensely moving music and powerful vocals (and hints at the Celtic-influenced music to come later) showcase the wide range of Carbon Leaf's musicality. Throughout we can hear the beginnings of the "ether-electrified", Celtic- and bluegrass-tinged rock sound that Carbon Leaf has created on later albums. Whether a fan of Carbon Leaf or a new listener, Shadows In The Banquet Hall has something to offer through strong acoustic and electric guitarwork and thought-provoking, intelligent lyrics; it is most certainly an album worth listening to.
Dark but beautiful.......2004-04-01
This recording is less accessible than their later Echo Echo, but it rewards the patient listener. Carbon Leaf's gift is the ability to create gorgeous soundscapes that perfectly reflect the lyrics of each song. That gift is in full flower here, and the result is an album that coheres as a whole. Expect to need a few listens before it worms its way into your head, but once it does, you'll never forget it.
Carbon Leaf.......2000-03-22
I was informed of Carbon Leaf a month ago and I can not get enough of them. Great sound for a small band from Va.

Terrific for harp and asian/water sound lovers.......2005-08-30
This is the first harp-intensive CD I have bought, purchased after hearing selections from it on my classical music station, WGMS. Its even better than I expected. I love this CD! It is a great combination of familiar music by Debussy and other selections reminiscent of the flow and play of water, some with an wonderful asian flavor. This product would be great for soft mood music, background sound for an intimate dinner, etc. If you want or need only one harp CD, make this the one!!!

Tapping into the "mythological mystique" of the harp, and having "been mesmerized by water" since she "was a little girl," Yolanda Kondonassis compels our attention and praise with her atmospheric and flowing recital of "liquid thoughts," the aim of which is to musically combine and conceptualize conscious and subconscious images of brooks, rivers, oceans and imaginary universes of water. Drawing on a diverse collection of composers--- from Debussy [1862-1918] and Marcel Tournier [1879-1951] through the lesser known Michio Miyagi [1894-1956] and Alphonse Hasselmans [1845-1912] to George Rochberg [b.1918], whose own surprisingly luminous work, "Ukiyo-E," from the Japanese "Pictures of the Floating World," and, evocatively enough, the apt title of the CD is, at nearly thirteen minutes, the longest composition--- Kondonassis graces us. Her playing is subtle, caressing, fabulously impressionistic, and never less than convincing in establishing an inspired, other-worldly ambience. As well, with her own mysterious and memorable piece, "Liquid Shadows," she delves even further into moody fantasy. Due to the extraordinary ability of the harp to easily transport us to the most pleasurable of aural places, the enveloped listener is simply a captive audience, especially when the works are as remarkably meditative, reflective and soothing as they are here.

Wow!.......2002-05-22
This is really a fantastically beautiful sounding CD. It is so dignified and spacey at the same time. The selections are extremely eclectic....a little Debussy...a little koto music....an orginal piece..but it all fits together and sounds very natural. If you are interested in something to listen to with the lights turned low, I don't think you can go wrong here.
hauntingly beautiful harp music.......1998-12-11
This is the most hauntingly, surreal, beautiful harp recording I have ever heard. I use it in my massage therapy practice all the time. Just perfect for relaxing to!!

A copy in every household . . ........2003-02-09
This disc is so chock-full of classic scores from classic films that every movie-and-music lover should own a copy. Thanks to Robert Townson for producing this collection and the entire Varese film score catalog. My favorite tracks from this disc are "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf"; "Star Trek: The Motion Picture"; and "Midway".
A sampler feat. some of the greatest film scores in history........2001-09-06
Words cannot convey what a collection like this means to a film music collector such as myself. Varese Saraband has been releasing quality film scores and music for the last 20 plus years. My vinyl and CD collections burst with so much great stuff from Varese. One day I was looking in the bins of my local record store and noticed this little gem of a collection. I looked at it and saw a virtual cornucopia of the great film score cues for only $ (and 2 discs). So I purchased it and opened it up. Much to my surprise, the booklet is chock full of information about each scoring session and pictures to boot. I also learned more about some of these wonderful pieces as well. Well thanks to Mr. Townson and this nice collection, I plan to purchase some of the recordings these cues were released on since I don't own classics like Viva Zapata, Alex North's 2001, Superman (not the Varese version, I do have the other release), and Patton. Guess I will have to save a few pennies, but it will be worth it. I recommend this collection to anybody who wants to discover and learn about the history of film music. I also think it's a great listen from the first song to the last on both discs. My compliments to Varese on a great collection of classics (and keeping it under $).
"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
The music that this label releases is without a doubt in a class by themselves, always perfection. Here we have the 500th CD release from ~ "The Man Behind The Music" ~ Mr. Robert Townson. So much care is taken with each album, that you feel you are witnessing the birth of a newborn baby, and that may be just what it is.
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!

Good, not great.......2007-01-07
There are some gems on this CD. Most of the music is nondescript when you listen to it; it is much more suited to being the background music of a TV show, of course. In other words, it's not like regular music you get on a regular commercial band's CD. In my opinion, the best songs are the Main Titles, in particular the 5th season.
Indeed it is........2007-01-05
With his compositions Franke shows how much he understands the B5 universe
of JMS. A true epic.
Wonderful!.......2001-11-05
This is a wonderful sound track. Chirstopher Franke catches the mood of the series with his music and it sounds even better when you listen to a recording, away from the episodes. Buy this.
This really is the Best of Babylon 5!.......2001-11-04
Thank you to Christopher Franke and Sonic Images for The Best of Babylon 5! Although I have most of these tracks on other B5 CD's, I really enjoyed this one because of the consistently great music. I would rank this one as excellent, along with my other two favorites, Babylon 5 Volume 2, "Messages from Earth" and the episodic CD, "Sleeping in Light." Two tracks deserve special mention: Track 2 is (I believe) a reworking of music from the album Babylon 5 Volume 1. With the "Battle of the Line" music in the background, Chris Franke adds new ideas to enhance the musical experience. The other notable track is the last one, Track 18 "Bonus Theme." This is a fabulous new track, which I understand was written for the (unfortunately never released) Babylon 5 CD-Rom game. This is six minutes of great music, that cannot be mistaken for anything other than "Babylon 5-style" music. It's a thrilling piece, which alone makes me glad I bought the CD. Let's hope we get the same quality offering with the "Legend of the Rangers" movie soundtrack, which I hope will be released next year.

Historically significant choral works, wonderfully performed.......2004-05-31
For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.
DANCE LIKE THE WIND presents works by eight African American composers from various generations, though they all emerged after the neo-classical period of non-discrimination. You'll hear loyalty to classic idioms like the spirituals and blues, but also elements of more recent genres like R&B, gospel and rap. Enclosed are excellent liner notes and biographical information.
The other three CDs are available as single titles, or in the boxed set entitled THE WITNESS COLLECTION which includes:
WHAT A MIGHTY GOD: Spirituals and Gospels for Chorus
GOT THE SAINT LOUIS BLUES: Classical Music in the Jazz Age
SKYWARD MY PEOPLE ROSE: Music of William Grant Still
