Album Description

With their newest epic, Pelican bring on new levels of complexities to their already distinctive auditory stamp. Acoustic guitars take their place beside the group's traditional (read: highly amplified) power-droning and awe-inspiring instrumental anthems. Whether this signals the end of the underground musical landscape as we know it, or the beginning of a new one is anyone's guess. Luckily, it rules either way. They've toured with Low, Tortoise, Isis, Mono, Cave In, Daughters, The Bronx, A.R.E., Weapons, US Maple, and more.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful soundscape.......2007-03-02

From thundering avalanches of sound to soft, glistening melodies, Pelican's 'The fire in our throats will beckon the thaw' is a perfect, and very dynamic album.

Sure this is not as 'heavy' as previous releases.. but heavy is definately not what Pelican is all about. Pelican is about soundscapes.. and the soundscape painted with this release is a of grandoise scale. It seems to capture the ocean-like swelling sounds of newer Isis, but is less repetative and more entertaining.. even without vocals. Yes the repetition is still there, (as always will be with 'soundscapes') but there is more 'variety' to the repetition if you will. I know that doesnt make a whole lot of sense, but you have to listen to this masterpeice in order to understand. This is not only a very atmospheric piece, but it is also very cleverly crafted in the sense that nothing sounds out of place, overdone or overly accented.

An entrancing journey to say the least.

4 out of 5 stars They don't reinvent the wheel, but they get it rolling again.......2007-02-20

You know whenever you hear a certain part of a song, that it just grabs you? I'm talking about a small instrumental piece that is often thrown in to submit a different mood or simply just add some diversity to the chorus and other familiar parts of the song. I've found it everywhere from Pearl Jam and Van Halen to going back to Thin Lizzy and Emerson, Lake and Palmer. It's sometimes when I hear these brief but impressionistic parts of a song that I wish I could find an entire album like that.

I've listened to some of Devin Townsend, but recently I ran across a band called "Pelican". I usually start at the beginning but in this case I picked up their latest release "The Fire in our throats will beckon the thaw". I wasn't sure what to expect at first, although electrifying and atmospheric rock/metal music that is void of a vocalist interested me enough to get it. Pelican plays atmospheric music that has various other styles incorporated into the fray. Think of it perhaps like Tangerine Dream meets Dream Theater, although I'm sure I'll get rotten fruit thrown at me for that one. The bottom line is, this isn't like a lot of instrumental bands I've heard in the past. Each song is unique in it's own right. We don't get overplayed overtures nor do we get a frenzied, energy drink fueled guitarist who is trying to impress us by screaming through the chromatic scale with a background of medieval wonder accompanying it. The CD is great whether you are kicking back or driving on a road trip somewhere.

Track Listing:

Last Day of Winter: Starts out with slow, carefully arranged guitar parts before getting into a groovier, albeit somewhat dark and heavy feel. When its not pouring out eclectic guitar sounds, its crashing at times with thunderous drums that wind down before launching into a nice, fast finish.

Autumn into Summer: The song starts out reminding this listener a lot of older Rush tunes, with an elegant and slow instrumental that has a lot of soul to it. Three minutes in, it speeds up and garners power as the guitars start taking on more life. The mood is timeless and the sounds expand into an ethereal world that just over four minutes becomes a crescendo as it waves upward before dropping down into a new chorus of riffs. Truly a fine track that has great changeups.

March into the Sea: This track has a lot more crunch and crash to it, offering a lot of high powered riffs and assaulting percussion that is less "progressive" in feel and perhaps more of an all out jam. At least that is what you think until you get over four minutes into this 11 minute epic. Soon you are totally gone from the high-speed riffage and the song takes on a more elegant, although still rocking appeal.

Pelican, or "*": My copy says the song is called Pelican, but after reading various sites and other people's comments to this, I'll leave it up in the air. Some are saying it's a hidden track since its not denoted in some parts. Regardless, this track clocks in less than five minutes but has unplugged tenacity that reminds me a lot of Nuno Bettencourt's earlier guitar work with Extreme. It's a nice "intermission" track no matter what the final title of it may be.

Red Rain Amber: Another song that stretches over 10 minutes in duration. RRA has a heavy bass line in the opening riff and is another that reaches high crescendos that have that uplifting feel to them later in the song. Great guitars again, with many memorable parts throughout.

Aurora Borealis: A song that is very atmospheric, but in a sense that it teases you with a lot of haunting, spread out tones before going into a slow, simple rhythm that reminds this listener of a couple different Pearl Jam tunes from back in the day. Almost a xylophone sounding chorus that is easy on the ears. Great track!

Sirius: Perhaps the most defiant song on the album, Sirius reminds me of the structures that ELP had back in the day with songs like "No fanfare for the common man". The guitars are simple but the tones they evoke are always different and lead up to some great thrashing thunder that is soon accompanied by even more differing guitar parts that only add to the pot.

A very impressive CD, if you are looking for rock/metal music that is creative as well as artistic in sound. If you like Soundtrack scores, Tangerine Dream, or any number of instrumental albums, you should give this one a try. The band mixes it up enough so that the listener is always experiencing something new, but never feeling lost. Instead of drowning in noodling experimentation, this CD gave me music I can enjoy, and enough of it that I am not hitting playback over a 20 second ditty like you may have found yourself doing on certain albums that had a particular part you really liked. Pelican didn't reinvent the wheel, but to a listener who enjoys this kind of music, they sure got it rolling again.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite as "epic" as they bring it out to be, but still a very good album........2007-02-17

I'll admit, I was slightly disappointed with TFIOTWBTT after hearing Sirius. I expected a little more than what was there, but still, this is a great album.
It's not post-rock brilliance, but it's definitely worth a litsten if you're a fan of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars There's a name for a band like this...........2006-07-13

Pelican is a band that I like to call Neur-isis, a mixture sound between Neurosis and Isis, although Pelican has no frontman and some people may find that dull and boring, I disagree heavily, with this album it is simply anything but that! With beautiful melodies, and heart-stopping riffs this is a must have album, one of my absolute favorites.

Just a few months ago I went to see them on tour with Deftones and they are even better live, my heart was in my throat! Awesome awesome awesome band!!

5 out of 5 stars Don't see Pelican live...........2006-06-10

Because they are so amazing, I just saw them in Denver, they will just detract from how profoundly powerful this album is. This album is one of my top five from last year. You have to buy and listen to it very loud and preferrably with headphones. They are intricate and clever and if "Autumn into Summer" doesn't drive you crazy, in a good way, you're wrong and you don't deserve them. They remind me of so many other great bands that are avoiding lyrics and concentrating on their instrumentation. Only they are much heavier. If you like Mogwai, before they got mediocre; if you like Constellation Records' bands without any electronics and much fiercer; you will love this band. Oh, and if you do see them, don't say I didn't warn you.

Album Description

A live recording from Monaco in 1974 conducted by the legendary, elusive Carlos Kleiber. Kleiber never recorded Der Rosenkavalier commercially, and this live recording boasts very good sound. Born in 1930, the son of another fine conductor (Erich Kleiber), Carlos Kleiber ended up outshining his father and being widely recognized as one of the greatest musicians of the twentieth century. He had a cult following through much of his career, and since his death in 2004 it has only increased in intensity. Kleiber was famous for brilliant interpretations of a smallish repertoire, mostly a few operas and symphonies, his recording of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony being frequently singled out as the greatest of all time, a model of balance between excitement and repose. He seldom appeared in public and was more famous for canceling appearances than making them. His behavior may have been eccentric, but his artistry was sublime. The premiere of the opera on January 26, 1911, at the Hofoper in Dresden, was a magnificent success, and Der Rosenkavalier's luster has scarcely dimmed in the ensuing years. It remains the most popular and oft-performed opera by Richard Strauss, who in turn is the most famous German opera composer of the twentieth century. The music is a deft blend of Viennese schmaltz and modernisms, making the listener feel warm, comfortable, and dreadfully chic at the same time. Hugo von Hofmannsthal (1874-1929) created seven librettos for Strauss, of which this was the second, achieving perhaps the most perfect operatic collaboration since Da Ponte and Mozart.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A treasure, and long awaited.......2007-05-25

Carlos Kleiber made no CD set of 'Der Rosenkavalier,' one of a handful of operas that the eccentric conductor was willing to perform, but on VHS there used to be a version with Claire Watson as the Marschallin, a role she repeats here. Another Kleiber film version, available now on DVD, is from 1994, twenty years after this one, and it features the unsatisfactorry, matronly Felicity Lott as the Marschallin. With all that in mind, it's great to have a reasonably good-sounding stereo recording with the excellent Bavarian sTate Opera Orch.

The cast is first-rate, with Fassbaender in her prime and Watson doing very well, too, although she lacks Schwarzkopf's charisma, Te Kanawa's perfect voice, or Crespin's pathos. The Sophie of Hilda de Groote is spunky and a trifle spoiled, a refreshing chqnge from the usual marzipan doll. Ridderbusch is the suavest, most aristocratic of Oches, a refreshing change form the usual blustery churl. But it's Kleiber one has come to hear, and his conducting is magnificent. I have no hesitation putting him at the same level, and perhaps higher, than Karajan form his classic EMi recording iwth Schwarzkopf---every bar sounds original, and Kleiber shows more sheer vitality than Karajan, who lingers much more over the luscious melodic outpourings.

P.S. -- A note aobut the sound. This msut have been a tape made at home form a comercial broadcast, because the sound can be murky and there are glitches and jumps, like bad splices. So don't expect the world.

In sum, a long-awaited treasure has surfaced.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Bohm's best studio effort.......2004-10-28

This recording is perhaps Bohm's greatest studio effort. Certainly he was best live--for example his Bayreuth 'Tristan' and 'Die Frau Ohne Schatten' at the Vienna Opera. But this opera never seems to lose pace, and the modest tempi work quite well.

The cast features several of the same performers as the 1968 Figaro, a masterful recording in its own right. Hermann Prey and Fischer-Dieskau are wonderful (ironically, Diskeau is again playing a count) with the wonderful Janowitz and Troyanos filling in the female roles. Both of these recordings benefit most from this fantastic ensemble, and Bohm continued to enjoy the work of these great talents in his Mozart and Strauss performances throughout the 50's and 60's. The tone of this opera is very conversational, and their is a greater emphasis on ensemble than solos (again, like Figaro).

Much has been made of Bohm being passed over for Krauss to conduct the premiere, and also that Bohm conducted this opera quite infrequently compared to others--but this overshadows the tremendous success he enjoyed at the Salzburger Festspiele with this work, and that at the time he was considered its greatest exponent. The recording was highly praised, and its quality remains intact to this day.

The opening Sextet is marvelous (it's reminiscent of the string writing of Schubert) and the last scene is especially magical. In many ways it is the ideal that Strauss had been moving towards in his later operas; it is charming, simple and conversational. Although it uses a typically large Straussian orchestra, the writing is in a chamber style, and is consistent with his movement towards the last songs and chamber works of his old age. If one accepts Strauss as being the heir of Mozart and Wagner, it's the point at which Strauss best captured the charm of Mozart, while fully using the Wagnerian leitmotif and romantic orchestra. It is as far removed from Salome and Elektra that one could get, but it is no less of a work because of that.

5 out of 5 stars "Sideburn and napalm aftershave headache".......2003-12-31

"Don't Hide It Provide It" is the nastiest piece of music I own, and it's brilliant. I hounded the DJ at a club I used to frequent to play this, and when he finally did I danced. Exuberantly.
"A Prayer For My Death" is extremely well written (it's even better live on "RIFE").
Probably the last great Foetus recording made.

            5 out of 5 stars thaw...raw.......2003-03-06

This is absoolutely the most jarring of any Foetus album yet. The music makes your ribs crack not only because of the noisy, thickly composed screaming metal-banging music, but also the immediate juxtaposition of wild noise & some of Thirlwell's quintissentially Thirlwell modern classical pieces. There's also a blues song (with very poetic lyrics, I might add as a well-read poet), & some tabla drumming. This crazy experimental music can be pretty catchy, too, if you ask me -- especially the 4th & 5th songs. Or anyways. I mean. I like those songs a lot. It's also pretty incredible that Thaw is so radically different as a whole from the Foetus album that preceeded it: Nail, also wonderful music. Between them he did a Wiseblood album, Dirtdish, which has a lot of pulsing static white noise.

            5 out of 5 stars achin' for a breakin'.......2001-11-26

Part of JGT's ongoing Picasso-Matisse style battle with Nick Cave, you see, the mercy seat was more commercial, more accessible, so JGT says to himself, " I can do that".
Hence, we have 'Thaw', which goes in my "best album of career" drawer, not one bad song or wasted moment to be found, and I've tried looking everywhere.
Great to play at office parties, Christmas and Thanksgiving.
Also a great repellant for the "I love trent reznor and ministry, look at my wounds, they are beautiful" type scum that have claimed our music.
Buy it or don't, I dont care. p.s. this is one release where the CD version sounds as good as the vinyl.

5 out of 5 stars Foetus at his best.......2001-10-19

Nail is usually hailed as Jim Foetus Thirlwell's masterpiece, but Thaw is even better imho. On Nail ugly drum machines sometimes dissipate the tension. Thaw is more organic and more manic. Nail is calculated. Thaw is a magnificantly horrible accident.

4 out of 5 stars Gave me bad dreams.......2001-04-19

I give this album a high rating, but I admit I got rid of my copy. I simply found it too disturbing to ever listen to! Still, as a completely unadulterated musical display of violence and hatred, it's pretty damn impressive.
