Awesome riffs, virtuous keyboard player and an evil voice by Mr. Allen. This is the best vocal performance from Russel Allen and the fastest craziest and most insane guitar playing I've heard in a long time. THe dark lyrics are grrrreat. Everything from the opening track -operesque-Rhapsody sound alike- to the artwork is amazing. Sit down, listen and enjoy. By far, the best from 2007

What a Bummer.......2007-07-17

Big letdown from this great band. Like ketchup pouring out of a bottle, I waited with eager anticipation for the release of this CD. However, the final product was just ordinary- some nice moments here, some good playing. But, overall this has to be the biggest disappointment of the summer of 2007. Don't listen to the super fans. This is a weak CD lacking any memorable songs. I love this band, so it pains me to write this. I am even going to go as far as saying that I hate the way Allen sings on this CD and he is one of my favorites. Oh well, I hope their next effort is a lot better. Sorry if I made you mad super fans...but I am a super fan also...I'm just an honest one.

I'm a huge Symphony X fan and as I expected when I put this CD in ..I was floored. This is their best and greatest effort so far...and trust me all their work is amazing. What ever you do do not pass this up, If your a Dream Theater fan you will LOVE this. I don't see how anyone could say their a really big fan of the band and give them less then 3 stars on this..if so, then your not really a Symphony X fan. Great work...true artist.

THE DISC: (2007) 10 tracks clocking in at approximately 61 minutes. Included with the disc is a 14-page booklet containing song titles/credits, band photos, thank you's, and several pages of fantasy artwork dealing with dark landscapes, both good and evil. The tri-fold case is a made of cardboard that opens upward and out, verses left to right. All music written by Romeo (except "Paradise Lost" by Romeo and Pinnella). All lyrics written by Romeo and Russell. Label - InsideOut Music.

COMMENTS: Symphony X continues to shred. The same line-up is still in tact that gave us "The Odyssey" (2002) and "V" (2000)... a huge bonus in this day and age where keeping a band in tact over the years is proving to be a tough thing to do. From the outside looking in, the band's chemistry shines - they seem to know what they want, how each other plays and their capabilities, and the direction they want to go... everyone's on the same page. Symphony X continues to be huge in Europe, but has somehow still avoided mainstream success (unlike their progressive rock peers Dream Theater). Perhaps that's the draw for me - supporting the underdogs and spreading the word about such talented bands worthy of audible praise in the world of rock and metal. I had to give "Paradise Lost" several weeks to listen and absorb what was there. First though, I had to get past the thin lame cardboard case - with two of the foldouts looking like flames or fingers intertwined that pop out at you like a 3-D book you had as a kid. Over the years I can only imagine these foldouts getting ripped/bent/frayed by lots of disc use. To me, this is a terrible packaging job. As for the music, it's superb as expected... it's right on par with each of their last 2 albums... though "V" is still my favorite followed by the older "Divine Wings Of Tragedy" - "Paradise Lost" will still sit on the same lofty perch. Romeo continues to be the brainchild of the band... having the major hand in writing all the music, as well as sharing the lyric duties. Part of me wishes this was more of a group effort. The musicianship is unsurpassed... I put Romeo & Co on that same lofty stage as Dream Theater and Kamelot... each band member is a wizard at their instrument(s). The album starts with a 2-and-a-half minute instrumental "Oculus Ex Inferni" - exciting to the hilt - up and down moments with evil chants in the background that would fit nicely in the recent re-make of "The Omen". The first song featuring Allen's vocals is "Set The World On Fire"... this song, as well as others that followed left me puzzled. I've always be drawn to Allen's wonderfully silky smooth vocals. But on most of "Paradise Lost" he seems downright belligerent - more attitude, growl and gruffness in his voice (at times he comes off sounding like a heated Ronnie James Dio). I think though, that's the tone of the album - like good and evil are battling it out, and the end of the world is a distinct reality. You certainly get that idea from the lyrics and artwork within the album. So as much as I miss his smooth vocals on albums past, the roughness in his voice fits "Paradise Lost". The title track is by far the mellowest on the album. Lots of nice piano and keyboard moments as you might expect with Pinnella having a hand in the writing (reminds me of one of my favorite tracks of theirs - "Communion & The Oracle" from "V"). The album closes with the longest song (just over 9 minutes), and it's perhaps the most varied on the disc. "Revelation" rocks for nearly 6 minutes, followed by a soft interlude, then back to a heavy finish. It's complete with keyboard solos that would make Keith Emerson proud. Sit back and let "Paradise Lost" spins several times before judging. Perhaps not Symphony X's best album (ultimately a tough decision because the band has several brilliant albums), but still an amazing piece of work (5 stars).

Loaded with lyrics about nightmares, pain, isolation and broken relationships, One X, the sophomore effort from Three Days Grace should be a downright bummer of a ride. Instead, the listener manages to find uplift lurking beneath the weighty lyrics as the quartet churns out a series of anthemic, crunch-chord songs. The band moves from arena-ready light metal with "It's All Over" to the sex groove of "Animal I Have Become," before plunging the listener into full-on chaotic heaviness during the anti-alienation anthem "Riot" and easing us into the atmospheric future hit "Get Out Alive." Throughout, TDG remains true to its core alt-metal sound. While that sound has been called unimaginative and unoriginal and at times does feel a little too familiar, the material on One X is never less than convincing and it packs a serious and stinging rock `n' roll punch track after track. --Jedd Beaudoin

Alot of bands choke on the 2nd effort especially after a smashing debut due to touring and other creative inhibitors, but this band stands out far above anything else on the radio...this album rocks and I don't care what anybody says, these dudes are talented as hell and write catchy tunes. This cd is a CLASSIC.... nuff said

The band is excellent. They are good musicians and play tightly together. The problem is the lyrics are awful. This is nothing less than nightmares set to music. If you have these same thoughts running through your head, seek some professional psychiatric help. Absolutely not recommended for young listeners. Parents you are warned. No wonder the record industry is on the ropes.

My Favorite CD
Three Days Grace is not only for one group of people. A lot of people I know and people I don't know love Three Days Grace.Rockers, punk, and the girls scream for them. I went to their concert when they came to buffalo and they were sweet. I never heard a band that sounded just as good live as they are on the CD.Here are some of there songs: Are You Ready, Pain, Never Too late, Just Like You, I Hate Everything About You, and tons more.
When I first listened to the CD I never stopped.In my opinion this CD is amazing and I can't wait until they make another one.I play the drums and when I heard the drummer I was BLOWN away.
I recommend this CD to everyone who is willing to listen to something new.You will be impressed,Even my mom loves them.

I like the CD One X by Three Days Grace. This CD has 12 songs on it. These songs are about 3 minutes long. Three Days Grace is a Canadian band. I like the songs Riot, One X and all the other song on the CD. There is some swearing in three of the songs. My opinion of this CD would be a 10 out of 10. I love this CD so much that I downloaded it on my I pod. I would recommend this CD to kids that are older than 12 because of the swearing. I would also recommend this CD to people that like rock music

Things have gone ridiculously well for Coldplay since 2002's A Rush of Blood to the Head. The group's global album sales have soared past the 10-million mark, putting it in the same stratosphere as megabands U2 and the Dave Matthews Band. People have offered up their bank accounts, cars, and even bodies for tickets to its shows. And, in a interesting twist, frontman Chris Martin married Gwyneth Paltrow and set the tabloid world aflame. Funny thing, then, that the British quartet's much-anticipated third album, X&Y, is all about staying grounded. In the powerful opener, "Square One," the singer insists people are fundamentally the same no matter what their stature: "You just want... Somebody listening to what you say," he sings. On "Fix You," Martin grapples with imperfection and missed opportunity: "When you love someone but it goes to waste... Could it be worse?" Meanwhile, the vibrant single, "Speed of Sound," is all about reconnecting with the spirit and soul in the face of the paparazzi's flashbulbs. Musically, the band has never sounded more adventurous, referencing everyone from Kraftwerk ("Talk") to the Pogues ("Swallowed in the Sea"), all the while sweeping aside those Radiohead-lite comparisons to embrace a massive, moving sound that makes simplicity seem sublime. --Aidin Vaziri

Even though this is not my favorite CD by Coldplay, I found it very enjoyable.

This is not a bad album. However, it is not a great album either. I am a Coldplay fan. I thought both Parachutes and A Rush of Blood to the Head were very good albums, particularly a Rush of Blood, which didn't have a really bad track on it. X&Y is not of the same caliber. I admit that I really liked some of the tracks on X&Y--particularly Fix You, A Message, The Hardest Part, and Til Kingdom Come. However, it had at least one track that I absolutely hated, Twisted Logic, and a number of others that just seemed like filler and all blend together for me. I can't say exactly what went wrong with this album--only that something did.

Encouragingly, some of the best songs associated with this album are the B-sides, in particular Proof and The World Turned Upside Down. So, I have some confidence that Coldplay can right the ship with their next album. I give X&Y a half-hearted recommendation, but if you don't own any Coldplay albums, don't let this be the first one. Purchase A Rush of Blood and Parachutes first, and if you absolutely love them, go for this one.

Finally, I would simply ignore all of the Radiohead fanboys who constantly rip Coldplay. I love Radiohead, in my view one of the best bands of the past 20 years. But I'm not so foolish as to think that no other band can make great music, including a band that is heavily influenced by Radiohead. There is no doubt that Coldplay's music, especially Parachutes, was influenced by The Bends and OK Computer. But if you can listen to OK Computer without hearing the influence of the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds, Miles Davis or the Beatles, then you haven't listened to enough music in your lifetime. The short story is, Coldplay stand on their own just fine without being accused of being completely derivative of Radiohead.

Good, but this band is capable of more........2007-05-21

Having listened to a great deal of Coldplay's rarities and B-sides before, I have to say that I was unfortunately a little let-down by X&Y. Though it's by no means a bad album, when compared to tracks like "Rush of Blood to the Head", "Spies", or their almost completely unknown "Ladder to the Sun", nothing here quite matches the complexity that we all know this group is capable of. There's a lot of great moments, but not quite as much to make you drop what you're doing and hang onto every word.

If you're looking for their best work, I'd have to recommend "Rush of Blood to the Head" over X&Y. If you already own "Rush" and like what you've heard, by all means give it a shot. But just make sure you listen with an open mind.

Creative Genius.......2007-05-14

Chris Martin is absolutely amazing. Not only does he write his own music (unlike Brittney Spears, Christina Agulera, Pink, Jessica Simpson, and so many other cheesy singers), but his music and lyrics are absolutely fantastic. If you pay attentoion to the lyrics, there is a much deper story to the entire album. Moreover, there are so many creative twists and turns with not only the melody, but also the sudden introduction of bass that bursts the song into life! My heart pounds with the beauty of Coldplay's music. I would reccomend this CD to anyone [...]

A classic of the '00 decade.......2007-04-23

There's no denying the U2 influence on "X&Y." Chris Martin's soothing voice, mixed with soaring vocals and a huge rock sound, are reminiscent of U2's best work over the years (see U2 - The Best of 1990-2000). Other U2 elements are present as well: hopeful but questioning lyrics, tight staccato beats, swirling or chiming guitars, a bit of piano, an anchoring bass and serious musicians who truly want to change and heal the world through music, one weary person at a time.

Like Bono, Martin's voice has good range, and he can even hit the higher notes with a bit more ease (probably because he's younger than Bono and cigarettes and drink haven't yet ravaged his pipes). Also like Bono, Martin writes beautiful, transcending lyrics that really do inspire.

"Square One," one of the album's best songs, leads things off: "From the top of the first page/To the end of the last page/From the start of your own way/You just want someone listening to what you say," croons Martin. Right off the bat, there's a storybook, conceptual feel to this CD. Despite his rock-star status (or maybe because of it), Martin sounds just as insecure as many of us; check out the fragile tunes "What If" and "Fix You," for instance. "X&Y" seems to be an album about finding one's way in this tough world, taking risks and fulfilling your potential. Martin's sad lyrics are often redeemed by the hopeful tone of the album, and it's a rare feat to pull off a piece of musical work that contains such great songs AND meaningful lyrics. Unlike most multi-platinum sellers, "X&Y" has an understated edge to it that gives it a leg up.

With its killer high-pitched riff, giant rock sound and big sing-along chorus, "Talk" gets the award for the most arena-ready and accessible song on "X&Y." "You can take a picture of something you see/In the future, where will I be?/You can climb a ladder up to the sun/Or write a song nobody has sung." "Speed of Sound" also contains commercial appeal (like all these songs), and was indeed released as a single in the mid-'00s.

"X&Y's" title track is the album's most romantic, a lush love song that aims for the stratosphere via airy lyrics, a peaceful string section and mesmerizing guitar: "You and me are floating on a tidal wave, together/You and me are drifting into outer space," croons Martin. "Swallowed in the Sea" has a similarly beautiful sound and message, with Martin singing, "I could write a book." This fully loaded line almost brings the album full circle. Almost.

"Twisted Logic" contains a darker sound and hesitant vibe at first, but soon the music changes and becomes positively soaring and uplifting. The sprightly acoustic hidden track is also a gem, a love song with personal, heart-wrenching lyrics. Martin's voice sounds close and weary, his most Bonoesque vocals of the album. "For you I'd wait, till Kingdom Come/Until my days, my days are done/Say you'll come, and set me free/Just say you'll wait, you'll wait for me." Words don't get more poignant than that.

The interesting thing will be to witness where Coldplay goes from here. U2 lifted its sound to more adventurous, interesting territories as they moved on (see Achtung Baby), and so too could this important band.

With each subsequent CD, it seems like Fourplay gets better and better. 'Turnabout' brings back memories of the first few CDs they released when they had Lee Ritenour on guitar. Even Steve Winwood would have to admit that Michael McDonald gives new texture to 'My Love's Leavin'. This band has been making great music since 1991. If this is your first Fourplay purchase, it will make you want to buy each of the previous nine CDs; even the offering of Christmas music!

Get This In Your CD Player .......2007-03-27

Any person that knows smooth jazz will tell you that these four guys by themselves are major forces on their own. But when they combine their incredible talents for a project..well here is the result.. "X"
This is pure listening enjoyment. Not one bad song is on this one. Whether you are in your car or sitting at home with a glass of Scotch(my favorite!) this is one that will not disappoint. Larry Carlton shines on guitar as always and the keyboard work of Bob James just sets it off. Nathan East adds his class on bass and the drum work of Harvey Mason is what makes these songs just flow together like a perfect day. Incredible sounds that will only have leave you saying at the end why did they only put nine songs on this.

Easy on your ears........2007-03-25

Fourplay return with their tenth set that oozes the quality and accomplished playing you would expect.
Cuts like Bob James' "Turnabout" and the breezy "Eastern Sky" epitomize what Fourplay is about.
Michael McDonald adds his distinctive vocals to the dramatic ballad "My Love's Leavin".
Check the flowing Jazz jaunt "Screenplay" on which James' playing is particularly expressive.
The band's trademark light touch and melodic focus characterise this set that is their finest for many years.

On its fifth album, Static X mines its familiar Prong-meets-Ministry sound to convincing effect over the course of twelve tracks of industrial metal darkness. Because the band's name alone makes comparisons to the likes of White Zombie, Korn, and Slipknot redundant, it's instead worth noting that Cannibal is arguably the group's leanest, most direct-sounding, and most metal album to date. And, if this album is a harbinger of the outfit's future ventures, then listeners are in for a eye-popping ride. Wayne Static and his cohorts are perhaps most effective on the stomping "Cuts You Up," the dark and discoesque "Behemoth," and the grand executioner of them all, "Destroyer." Still, the record suffers a bit for its intentions of brutality. The hit-and-run approach of Static's songwriting means that none of the tracks reach the four-minute mark and thus come off as vignettes rather than fully realized narratives. All in all, Cannibal may be the album that detractors and fans alike have been waiting for, the one that proves that Static means to take us on a longer and more interesting journey than we could have ever imagined. --Jedd Beaudoin

This is some nice evil disco here. Guitar Solo's and even some double bass give this Static Album more balls than their other albums. Its nice to see static playing this kind of music. Favorite songs are cannibal, no submission, chemical logic, chromo matic, cuts you up, and destroyer.

Though Static X is one of my favorite bands, I feel like this album is not as musically inventive and solid as the last two have been (particularly Shadow Zone). Still a great album!

Another great album by Static-X.......2007-06-13

Static-X has revamped their sound more times than I honestly care to count, but I can say with all honesty that I've loved everyone of their albums. As most will say none have quite broken the barrier like Wisconson Death Trip, but you can't always compare things so heavily. Each album has had wonderful sounds to it and all in all Static-X is a great band and never a bad choice to buy. If you're the kinda person who can't stand change in a band and was deviasted when bands chance their sound then this is simply not the band for you, but if you have an open mind and enjoy sounds you can simply just rock out to then you wont find a better group to listen to.

All those reviews that have less than 5 stars are those who give up easily, can't listen to a song the second time. All it takes is some faith and a second or probably third listen and you'll all get hooked.

Wayne Static has always kept his consistency in keeping most of his songs to less than 3 minutes. It not only helps him focus on giving us the tightest music but gives us fans a treat, rather than listen to a 10 minute drab.

There are some obvious classics in this album - Cannibal, No Submission (my personal favourite), Chroma-matic and Behemoth (One of the greatest first 15 seconds I've listened to).

Static-X has given its heart and soul and gone all out in this album touching thrash and heavy metal.

Reptile, 40 ways, Electric Pulse etc. are songs that you will need to listen to a second time, probably a third for hard to convince people like me, but trust me you will get hooked I guarantee it!

And for all those reviewers who have given it 1,2 or 3 stars go back to your ipod and listen to it again and lets see if it changes your mind!

This CD will make you pumped & ready to kick a@%!! I listen to this album while working out & it keeps me going. It's non-stop heavy rocking from beginning to end. In my opinion, this is the best album of the year!

Theres not enough cliches to describe the level of depth and virtuosity that this band has attained. Virgil gets the MVP award in my book. His playing is simply beyond everyone else on a drumkit. His compositions are futuristic and mind bending, both literally and metaphorically. Every player in the band is at the top of his game, Quantum will be THE CD that will make waves in the prog/metal universe this year.

Definately the best Planet X album so far. Absolutely Stunning! Put on your headphones and get ready to travel the Universe! Derek Sherinian is the best keyboard player on Earth. The only drawback to this record is that the Great Allan Holdsworth should have had alot more playing time.

Many thanks to Planet X for another ride in their universe of very different and interesting music. This album is a breath of fresh air. I own all of PX albums and I follow them since their first output "Universe". I find this as one of the most focused efforts of theirs. First of all I prefer Garsed to Macalpine on the guitar chair. I think Brett fits better this kind of "alien" music even if Tony played very well on the other releases from the band. Rumors are that for the next chapter the band will have Greg Howe on board. I hope it could be true because Greg is probably the biggest gun in these territories. Holdsworth plays here just a couple of solos, they are nice but don't change the overall feel of the music ... Brett contributes a lot more. What you can find here are a lot of dispair times at the point that sometimes you lose the guys. It is very funny and interesting. If you are a musician you have a lot to think about here rhytmically. If you are not, don't worry because the music is really entertaining if you love this style (metal plus fusion I may say). I really appreciate Virgil Donati's drumming. Sometimes I find myself focusing on his playing and wow, I have to say that he's incredible. I hope this band will release more albums in this area ... I think it is something new and that this style has the potentials to be something even more interesting in the future. But this Quantum is already a very nice album that I find myself listening over and over. Even better than Moonbabies if you want. Bravo to the guys, Brett and Virgil in particular.

Their Best Yet.......2007-06-13

This is by far Planet X's best effort to date.
Worth the wait since the last release, Derek Sherinian, Virgil Donati and guests do an unbelievable job.
Alan Holdsworth, Rufus Philpot and Brett Garsed do outstanding work on guitar, while keyboardist Sherinian and drummer Donati give their usual great performances.
This is one of the year's best in progressive rock so far.

I bought this CD b/c I remembered it from a long time ago when it first came out, but, I have to admit, I was disappointed. The songs didn't really grab me like I remembered. 2 great songs: Spin Spin Sugar and Six Underground are wonderful! It's the stuff in between that you'll hear, memorize and maybe tap a toe or two to, but not your whole foot.

The trip hop movement that flourished in the early 90s, thanks to pioneering groups like Massive Attack and Tricky, broke open the floodgates to lots of other creative artists seeking to escape rock, pop, and hip hop conventions of the time. Among these second-gen artists, the Sneaker Pimps in their first lineup may shine the very brightest. Just a quick sonic glance at Becoming X yields an album that is rich with addictive hooks, sexy grooves, and Kelli Dayton (now Kelli Ali)'s strangely spooky bubblegum pop vocals. This combination of the sexy and cynical makes for a unique listening experience that few other artists can claim to have created.

It may well be Dayton's vocals that sublimate these recordings into perfection. Although ample credit is due to the solidity of the foundation on which her part stands--the downtempo grooves between the smooth, driving drums and the dark, languid bass--Dayton's voice puts a sheen over the sound that is remarkable. You can almost picture a cyberpunk angel singing about her fall from grace. Yet Dayton is most apparently human in her lyrics. Although Becoming X is riddled with clamor over its sensual nature, it also tackles numerous subjects ranging from pop star subjugation, failing religion, and alienation.

Chris Corner's additions to the album as principle composer are the second greatest feature of Becoming X. As with the dynamic vocal/lyrical ideas, the musical compositions found here cannot be placed into a single box. Starting with "Low Place Like Home", a piece which feels as vindictively cynical as it does spooky, to the alluring, airy sounds of "6 Underground", to the acoustic bite of "Post-Modern Sleaze" and the lonely "How Do", Becoming X features an admirable range of sonic expression and emotive vocabulary.

If you've been looking for a way into the realm of trip hop and electro-pop, this is definitely one of the best routes to take. Alternatively, if you've grown tired of other artists that are either too heavy, wall-of-sound or too focused on hip-hop influences and circuitous synth beats, this CD is a unique escape from those. Either way, it is virtuosic in its context and entirely worth checking out. If, when you first listen, you can feel the tug of Kelli Dayton's bittersweet vocals or Chris Corner's blackhearted grooves, you won't want to pass this up. Once you've tasted Becoming X, you'll never want to give it up.

Def Jam's Cash In On DMX (Rating: 8 out of 10- -4.0 stars).......2007-06-28

It's no suprise that Def Jam would drop a greatest hits album for DMX since he left the record label and dropped Year of the Dog...Again on Columbia back in late '06. DMX has been in the rap game since the early 90's finally getting noticed in '98 with the song "Ruff Ryders Anthem". Collaborating with artists like Jay-Z, Ja Rule (those were the good ol' days of Def Jam) he has dropped rememerable verses. He has dropped some dope albums like It's Dark and Hell Is Hot & Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood back in '98.

The Definiton of X: Pick Up The Litter is a good overview of DMX between 1998-2003. What I like about these albums is that most of the hit singles are on here (isn't that what a greatest hits is all about). Classic songs like "Get At Me Dog", "Party Up (Up In Here)", "Blackout", and "Slippin'" are on here, and are great to hear. I also enjoy "Who We Be" from The Great Depression album as wel, as each song brings back memories of bumping most of these songs throughout middle and high school.

It's no suprise that, like everybody else, has their own beef with what songs should and should not be on here. I personally believe some of the remixes are on here like "Ruff Ryders Anthem (remix)" and "Get At Me Dog (remix)", not to mention a few B-sides as well.

Overall, this is a great place to start listening to DMX, especially if you missed him in his earlier years. If you're like me, and own every album, picking this up would be pointless (a friend let me borrow this one). What I fear is that later on down the road, this will be the only entry point to DMX, as all of his albums on Def Jam will be out of print. But I hope that doesn't happen anytime soon. But even fans of X will be happy with this album. Peace.

Good starting point for new DMX listeners.......2007-06-21

Like a lot of people my age, DMX is an artist I've grown up listening to, and while he's never been my favorite rapper, I've always thoroughly enjoyed his music, be it pump-up jams, depressed narratives, or collabos with the Ruff Ryders. "The Definition of X: Pick of the Litter" is a poorly labeled greatest hits compilation of his five Def Jam albums. DMX left Def Jam in 2005, so his most recent album, 2006's Year of the Dog...Again is not represented on this disc. The bulk of the album's tracklist is taken from his first two albums, It's Dark and Hell Is Hot and Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, both released in 1998. These albums are widely considered classic material and contain a lot of his darker, angrier work. There are six songs from 1999's And Then There Was X, his most commercially successful album, containing most of his most popular hits. 2001's The Great Depression and 2003's Grand Champ both contribute two tracks, which is suitable because while both solid albums, they contained less great material than his first three. Like with any greatest hits compilation, everyone's always going to have a little beef with the tracklist, personally I would have liked to see some tracks from the Ruff Ryders albums and some more soundtrack cuts, and a few notable hits are missing such as "I Miss You" and "Get It on the Floor." If you've had access to a radio or cable TV over the last eight years, chances are you know most, if not all, of these songs. But overall, this is a very potent collection of some great music.

DMX is a passionate and totally engaging rapper, and he can range from sullen and depressed to inspired and pumping. His best known work would be his club hits such as "Party Up (Up in Here)" and "Ruff Ryders Anthem." These upbeat bangers, of which there are many on this collection, are all wonderfully produced and extremely entertaining. And while there's less in the tracklist, you also get a taste of his sullen and spiritual side with songs like "The Rain" and the "Prayer" interludes. The tracklist is pretty well rounded and well selected.

If any DMX fans are confused by this recent release, don't be fooled by the misleading title and art, because this is a greatest hits collection. Those fans who own his Def Jam albums need not purchase this, because they will have all those songs already. But if you're just getting into DMX or never got around to buying one of his albums, this would certainly be a worthwhile purchase. I know I've spent countless hours listening to the songs on this tracklist over the years, and a few others probably will now too thanks to this collection.

Being a DMX fan I own all six of his album's, so none of this material is new to me. I think every fan will have preferred track's that they would like to see make (or be cut off) this release and have their own opinion on how the track listing should of been arranged. I could talk extensively about mine, but won't. My favourite DMX track is "Slippin'", I think "The Rain" is one of the DMX track's which has been slept on some so I was glad to see it included on this release. DMX has done some great soundtrack track's over the years - Belly, Cradle 2 The Grave, Exit Wounds, he has also made some memorable guest appearances. End of the day "The Definition of X: Pick of The Litter" may be a good starting point for newcomers, older fan's can be on the lookout for his seventh solo album currently titled "Soul of a Man" and for his appearance on the Belly sequel "Beast".

For DMX fans.......2007-06-18

This album really showcases DMX best work throughout the years. But for the years he was in DEF JAM. From (Dark And Hell Is Hot) to (Grand Champ) basically from 1998 to 2003. Doesn't have any of the other hits from recent years after DEF JAM like ( Get It On The Floor & We In Here). But I'm not dissapointed at all with this purchase. I'm a big DMX/Ruff Ryder fan since he first came out in 1997/98. It's nice to have DMX hits all in 1 CD, plus if buy the LIMITED DELUXE EDITION you get a free DVD with DMX videos. How can you go wrong with that. I don't regret at all purchasing this album from 1 of my favorite HIP HOP artists of all time. Well worth my money. So all you Ruff Ryder fans should pick this up no doubt.

Where is "Get It On The Floor" from Grand Champ?.......2007-06-16

The sole reason why I didn't purchase this album is because "Get It On The Floor" was not included. I was at Best Buy with Pick of the Litter in my hand when I slowly came to this awful realization as I scanned the track list on the back--I reluctantly put it back on the shelf. DMX is one of the best-selling rappers of all time, born with a golden, milllion-dollar voice other artists would kill for. Pick of the Litter should've been one of the best albums in the history of hip hop; instead, it's like purchasing Jay-Z's greatest hits without "99 Problems," Tupac's without "California Love," or Nas's without "Made You Look."

Steeped in poetry and class issues, X was the first L.A. punk band to fully incorporate a dark West Coast sensibility. Singer/lyricists/spouses John Doe and Exene Cervenka forged a stray-cat approach to vocal harmonies while spieling reports on crash-pad sex and drugs, casual hatred, and the occasional spotting of the "idle rich." Full-powered and intelligent, X's sound also spotlighted Billy Zoom, a pompadoured guitarist schooled by Gene Vincent, and flexible drummer D.J. Bonebrake. Los Angeles, the first of four productions by ex-Door Ray Manzarek, made an excellent case for the group, though its ambitions were to be quickly outstripped by the evolving personal takes of Doe and Cervenka. For the most part, the album is fast, hard, and fleet, like the motorcycles Zoom loved: "Your Phone's Off the Hook," "Johnny Hit and Run Pauline," the title track, and a Ramones-style cover of the Doors' "Soul Kitchen" are touchstones that reach beyond their era. Scary entity in your head-the music of X's Los Angeles.......2007-03-18

The uneasy beauty of the raw punk sound alongside the dark and troubling subject matter on this classic 1980 release is worthy of a true 5 star rating. This is a strange and disturbing CD. My first listen left me emotionaly askew,but I loved it. This is a must have punk-style CD.
John Doe and Exene's haunting,dissonant vocal tracks are downright scary.
Go buy this CD. After listening to it,you won't feel comfortable for days...

The First - Not The Best.......2007-01-12

This is X's first recording and contains most of the songs X are famous for. I loved this as a teenager...it just oozes angst and anger but I'd have to say now with an adult perspective that X's second go round Wild Gift rings a lot more true to the groups originality and song writing and arrangement. Not to say that I don't think that there are some really great tracks on Los Angeles but you won't find a dab of political correctness on this one. There are a few tracks that are downright offensive. I wouldn't let my boy's (11 & 16) listen to it and they love hearing the wierd stuff mom used to listen to. I wouldn't suggest this CD for anyone other than hardcore X fans.

Imagine a hybrid of The Sex Pistols, Fleetwood Mac, and Chuck Berry and you'd have something close to X's genius sound. Wheareas other West Coast outfits like Black Flag and Circle Jerks made a career out of playing harder, louder, and faster X placed more emphasis on tight musicianship and tunefulness, while still remaining very much a punk band. Their 1980 debut Los Angeles is perhaps their best, darkest album (classic cover to boot!).

From the moment that Exene Cervenka and bassist John Doe start applying their distinctive and slightly off-key harmonies, you can tell from the get-go it's an X song. Both vocalists tell seamy tales of California's underground and the ennui and nihilism of the rich, ranging from date rape (Johnny Hit & Run Pauline) to crashing in a punk dive (Nausea). Exene would have an even greater role in later releases, but on this album the songs are split largely 50/50 between the two vocalists.

Meanwhile, Billy Zoom's guitar blasts out pitch-perfect surf rock riffs and DJ Bonebrake's tight rhythms hold the whole thing together. Ex-Doors member and producer Ray Manzarek contributes some color with some great overdubbed organ lines, but otherwise this album is raw and searing, just as it should be. Your Phone's Off The Hook (But You're Not), The World's A Mess It's In My Kiss, Sex & Dying In High Society and the title track are barnstorming, venomous, and humorous all at once, while The Unheard Music is a slower-burning track with a more poetic and haunting delivery thrown in for variety.

Apart from a somewhat mediocre cover of The Doors' Soul Kitchen and a short album length (the original album is under 30 minutes, and the extra tracks are mostly demos that don't add much to the album), Los Angeles is an excellent release and essential to any discerning punker. Wild Gift and Under The Big Black Sun are also vital X albums, if a bit more polished and civilized than this one.

The Greatest Album Of All-time.......2006-05-05

This album is the true definition of what rock n roll is. It's the perfect album. Mixing all sorts of different genres together,and at that time no other band was doing what X did. There were many followers after, but none with the pure, raw, dark, energy that Los Angeles had. Exene and John Doe's voices morph together sending shivers up my spine every single time I here this album. They're song writing abilities are superior to every other song writer, yes even Bob Dylan. The lyrics take you to the darkest, most evil place you could imagine, yet they make that evil place romantic and comforting. You can feel there words. I can't say that about any other band. Billy Zoom is hands down the greatest guitar player ever. He's like an inteligent version of Chuck Berry on speed.And to see him play live with that constant satisfied smile on his face is just great.
This album will totally change your view of music and probably yourself. Produced by Ray Manzarek, who also plays organ on three tracks. Including the punked up cover of "Soul Kitchen".If you claim to be a true fan of music you will love this album. If you don't like it you are not a music fan and you should probably stop listening to music altogether.

DG has put together a fascinating compilation of Segovia's art that reminds us what a protean figure he was. Segovia single-handedly put the instrument on the map by making classical guitar concerts popular events, broadening the instrument's repertory through commissions and transcriptions, and convincing even doubters that it could be a vehicle for serious music. He's heard here in brief pieces recorded between 1952 and 1969. Even in those made when he was well into his 70s, his fingers remain nimble and interpretations lively. Listening straight through, one hears many all-time Segovia favorites as Turina's Sevillana and Albeniz's Asturias and Zambra Granadina and renews appreciation for path-breaking composers like Castelnuovo-Tedesco. He wrote extensively for Segovia and his Capriccio diabolico and Tonadilla are pieces of real substance. Disc two is largely made up transcriptions and it's amazing how well so many of them work on the guitar, at least under Segovia's magic fingers. Thus the transformations of Bach's violin music and even a Chopin Prelude sound idiomatic, and the gorgeous melodies of the Canzonetta from Mendelssohn's Op. 12 String Quartet are irresistible here. This 2-CD set produced by Deutche Grammmophon and first released in 2002 is one set of the hundreds that could have been or the dozens that actually have been made and sold successfully all over the world. The exceptional feature of this particular collection is not, of course, the performer. Quite to the contrary, the miraculous consistency of stylings and performance are amongst the most remarkable aspects of the man who was, arguably, the 20th Centry's virtuoso supreme of the classical guitar, Andres Segovia (1893-1987.) Rather, it is the collection itself - the pieces chosen to be produced on this one set - this, to steal a German word, gestalt. While his style did not remain constant throughout his long life and career, by the time he had developed his most masterful skills that included doing his own arrangements - the era represented on this particular set (1951-1960) - his playing had become completely his own - unchallenged and unmatched by even other clearly great guitarists with whom he shared this era.

There are a total of 31 pieces played on these CDs and while a playlist would be an unnecessary use of space here, a list of the composers represented is not. More than the specific pieces Segovia gives us here, the range of composers chosen by the compilers and editors - with each piece rearranged by Segovia himself, tells us a great deal about his interests, talents and musical range. These composers include:
Isaac Albeniz, Johann Sebastian Bach, Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, John Dowland, Manuel de Falla, Cesar Franke, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Edvard Grieg, George Frederic Handel, Felix Mendelsohn, Frederico Moreno Torroba, Modest Mussorgsky, Nicolo Paganini, Felipe Pedrell, Manuel Ponce, Jean-Philippe Rameau, Joaquin Rodrigo, Albert Roussel, Domenico Scarlatti, Alexander Scriabin, Segovia's own composition of Estudio sin luz, Fernando Sor, Francisco Tarrega, Joaquin Turina and Heitor Villa-Lobos. A truly magnificent and broad ranging collection held together by Segovia's unique personal style, approach and sound.

Largely self-taught, Andres Segovia did things with a guitar that others only imagined. He didn't just play Bach, for example - music written for an entirely different type of instrument (keyboards.) He went a step further, and recorder Bach's keyboard lessons written for his students (the Two and Three Part Inventions) and made them sound as if they had been written for the guitar! His artistry is evident to even the casual listener and in this collection, any devote of classical guitar and/or of Segovia as an individual artist, will not be disappointed.
Perfect listening for anytime. Hypnotic and, simply, unsurpassed. A necessary addition to any serious classical guitar collection.

EVERYBODY KNOWS THAT ANDRES SEGOVIA WAS/IS THE WORLD'S GREATEST CLASSICAL GUITAR PLAYER. THIS CD IS A COMPILATION OF HIS RECORDINGS FROM THE THE EARLY 50'S TO THE LATE 60'S. HIS GUITAR MASTERY IS UNQUESTIONED AND HE IS AN INSPIRATION. I WISH I COULD PLAY GUITAR LIKE ANDRES SEGOVIA (BUT I CAN'T AND I NEVER WILL!).

Even though there is hiss from the original analog recordings this one is a must. Segovia! What more can you say. Anyone who likes classical guitar will love this.
