1 out of 5 stars Sad Really Sad.......2007-05-13

These CDs don't meet the standards I would have expected from Elmer Bernstein's wonderful film music.
*Boring*
It just didn't have the energy one would expect from "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent movie themes antology by ELMER BERNSTEIN.......2007-05-10

Silva Screen Records, presents this antology of the music from the late great composer/conductor ELMER BERNSTEIN, who supervised this recording just before die.
Played the The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by his one time assistant James Fitzpatrick
Recorded in HDCD and Dolby Surround

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-04-22

it's unfortunate that more tracks weren't able to be recorded as theree was a good 15-20 minutes of space remaining on both discs. Regardless, this is an excellent sampler, especially in conjunction with Varese's Bernstein sampler including rare stuff like the Black Cualdron.

With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.

The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.

I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.

4 out of 5 stars Great Film Music.......2007-03-09

This is a great recording of some of the best film music ever. From the
great westerns to the Theme from Airplane to music he did for television,
Bernstein was one of the greatest.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Powerfull music.......2007-02-17

It's great! It brings back memories of my dad. He loved John Wayne and the old cowboys of the Magnificent Seven. But it's nice just to listen and relax (it's not all cowboy music).

3 out of 5 stars Great!.......2007-02-25

This is a great CD for someone looking to introduce themselves to Irish Music. However, for the more hardcore Clancy and Makem fans, this disc offers little in the way of new material. There are a few rare versions of songs that you can't get anywhere else (Rising of the Moon-45 RPM Version?, Valley of Knockanure, Johnson's Motor Car), but most have been released on other CD's or record albums. I wish that Columbia would just rerelease some of the classic WHOLE albums on CD, instead of waisting our time on repackaged items. Overall, a good buy, but don't expect anything new.

4 out of 5 stars WHEN THE HARP WAS CRUSHED BENEATH THE CROWN .......2006-04-18

The following review is being used to comment on several of the Clancy Brothers with Tommy Makem recordings. The obvious musical skills, talent and commitment to craftsmanship of this group during its history need no comment by me. Nor does their commitment to keeping alive the Irish folk tradition. Thus, the criterion for review is whether the works represents the political traditions associated with the historic struggle for independence from the English.

A word. As I developed a quasi- leftist political consciousness in my youth I also, in an unsystematic and for the most part then unconscious manner, developed an interest in what is today is called roots music. Initially this was reflected in my first love-the Blues. During the early sixties, under the influence of Dave Van Ronk at first, then Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Woody Guthrie and the rest I developed an interest in folk music, then at the height of its revival. It is through this process that I came to appreciate the work of the artists under review. This is odd, and I will explain why. I was actually reared on the material presented here by my maternal grandfather, a great supporter of the Irish Republican Army. I gained from him my own romantic attachment to the exploits of the IRA in 1916 and beyond until independence. Although my own political evolution since then has led me away from political support to the IRA I still love the old songs which represent the spirit of Irish national identity and aspirations for national liberation historically suppressed by the bloody English.

A word about the songs presented here. The liner notes included with the CD are helpful here. The songs range in subject from `The Rising of the Moon' at the time of Wolfe Tone and the United Irishman, probably the last time that a united, independent, non-sectarian single Irish state was possible, to `Kevin Barry' and `Sean Treacy' just before the partition in 1921, creating the mess that still confronts us politically today. That said, as these lines are being written we are approaching the 90th Anniversary of the Easter Uprising of 1916. The vision that James Connolly and others of a Social Republic proclaimed at the General Post Office still waits. In short, there is still work to be done, North and South, united or as independent states. Listen to these songs to understand where we have come from and why we still need to fight.

3 out of 5 stars It'll do, but when will Sony release a COMPLETE compilation?.......2000-06-19

Yet another compilation from this seminal Irish folk band's extensive catalogue of 1950s and '60s recordings (almost none have been released on disc), this touches on some lesser known songs that still stand up with the group's best work. But Wrap The Green Flag does nothing for fans who want the entire catalogue on CD, or at least a two-disc compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Wrap the Green Flag Wraps our Hearts.......1999-08-12

Wrap the Green Flag features some of the Clancy's unknown great hits like "Fare thee Well Eniskillen" and others. This album features a stirring version of Bold Fenian Men sung by Tom Clancy. This is absolutely a must-have for Irish music fans.

5 out of 5 stars Rousing rebel songs, and a couple of comic and love songs.......1998-11-22

I have almost every recording the CB and TM ever made, so maybe I'm a little prejudiced . It's hard to resist a CD that has the little heard 1920's IRA comic anthem "Johnson's Motor Car," as well as the stirring "Rising of the Moon," "A Nation Once Again," and the title track. Equally great are the comic and fast-paced "New South Wales" and "Galway Races." One of the things I liked best about this CD, though, were the liner notes, which contained a great deal of biographical information about our boys in knitted wool. If you're already a fan, you'll love this combination of songs, and if you're trying to get someone hooked on the group, this is a great CD to get them wanting to listen to more.

As we've come to expect from Peter Schickele (aka P.D.Q Bach), this is a comedy CD based thoroughly and utterly in classical music in-jokes, puns, references, mis-hearings, etc. Here, we're in the world of a casual, presumably classical music radio show ("all Pachelbel, all the time"), with a host and two sidekicks, all of whom can't resist "witty" chitchat. There are spoofs of fundraising (they hope for $100.00 by the end of the show), a song called "Sam and Janet," which actually turns into a polyphonic version of "Some enchanted evening" (get it? Sam and Janet = Some enchanted), a set of four folk songs accompanied by "devious instruments," one of which is a cardboard tube, which is to "played" by hitting it against someone's head. And one of the rules of the station is that all music must be in a major key until after 11 PM. Fans of Schickele who truly love his sophisticated spoofs of classical music will find fewer of them here than usual, oddly enough, but the CD is fun. And a highlight is a non-classical number or two (snuck in by the co-hosts, Jocko and Blondie) sung by Elvis's brother "Enos," who liked his name until they started calling his brother "Elvis the Pelvis." Delightful, if this is what you're looking for. --Robert Levine

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not My Favorite.......2006-04-04

This is a satire of the annoying disc jockey "personalities" who are all-too-apparent on radio today. As is so often the case with this sort of satire, it mimicks what its mocking a little too closely while not providing enough in the way of humor. There are some good pieces, like the PDQ Bach folksongs, but the music faded to the background when viewed alongside the obnoxious radio personalities. Some of it, was not only annoying, but kind of poinless, like the Elvis parody. I'm a huge fan of PDQ, but this album was too much even for me.

2 out of 5 stars For the dedicated PDQ fan only..........2005-10-29

Okay, I am not really a listener of classical radio stations, so
I cannot comment on whether this send-up of classical radio
stations is really fair. But, when I am trapped in a car without
my IPOD, I do listen to many pop radio stations and the
material on this CD with lots of annoying and stupid DJ
chatter is all too familiar. But that is the problem. Listening
to this CD is like watching a comedy skit that goes on and on
longer than it has to. Yes I did laugh a few times at the material
and the liner notes. But I cannot say this is really even "average"
PDQ material, hence the below average rating.

5 out of 5 stars Better than Citizen Kane.......2005-02-16

Ok, it's not better than Citizen Kane. It's just that I played "Jocko" on this CD and had a great time doing it. I'm glad so many people reviewed and liked the recording.

3 out of 5 stars blistering parody.......2004-09-03

Let me say at the outset that this is not my favorite PDQ Bach album. I agree with other reviewers that the PDQ Bach works themselves are somewhat less inspiring that on other albums. But there is one aspect of this album that needs to be pointed out: it is an absolutely devestating parody of what has become of classical music radio stations. More and more I find (and apparently Schickele also finds) that classical stations have become watered-down affairs, bland, inoffensive-- "relaxing" they call it. Music for people who basically don't like music very much. You know, background music that you don't have to pay much attention to or think about too much. Basically, high class muzak. This album takes that whole thing on in spades. In fact, in some sense it's really too true to be funny. I swear, the classical station in Boston must really have a "no minor keys until after 11pm" rule, and if they're not quite "all Pachelbel all the time!", they certainly play at least 33% obscure baroque works, while playing maybe 2% romantic and *zero* percent 20th century. So while the comedy on this album may not be the very best, the parody is absolutely spot-on. For that, I say "Kudos!!"

4 out of 5 stars Very witty parody.......2002-07-02

This is a CD that in several places brought tears to my eyes -- tears not of sadness, but of laughing so hard I cried. The hilarious parody of obnoxious and insulting sports talk show hosts (Jocko) reminds me of some all-too-real jerks on the radio now. The "Enos Presley" songs, Hound Dog and Love Me, were the real "tear jerkers" if you know what I mean. They are foisted upon the hapless "Prof" Schikele by his rambunctious co-hosts Jocko and Blondie, who figure that the station owner never listens and so it's okay to play something that's not classical on this otherwise "all Pachelbel all the time" station. "Enos," who didn't mind his name until they started calling his brother "Elvis the Pelvis" -- actually has quite an incredible voice: a combination of Elvis, Buddy Holly, Roy Orbison, and others. He is backed by an authentic and straight-faced "Jordanaires-like" group that is the perfect foil to his over-the-top parody of 50's Elvis-style pop.

Other hilarious songs are the four "Folk Song Upsettings" for soprano, piano, and "devious instruments" including Prof hitting himself over the head with cardboard tubes.

The reason I give this only a 4 rather than a 5 rating is that some of the actual PDQ instrumental music isn't that good. Sure, it's obviously not SUPPOSED to be good, but I mean it isn't bad or zany enough to be as funny as earlier PDQ Bach pieces like "My Bonnie Lass She Smelleth" and "Shleptet" and "The Stoned Guest," all of which were more inspired comedically and musically.

Still, this is definitely a CD to make you laugh. The best parts make it worth going through some less inspired sections.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Strange combination.......2002-10-12

This collection of Carole King's two albums shows her true diversity as a songwriter and performer. "Wrap Around Joy" is perhaps her most successful album commercially after "Tapestry." However, "Wrap Around Joy" presents slick production with its use of strings, chorus, horns, and multi keyboards, and rhythm section on almost all tracks. The effect is that one feels King has decided to retreat behind the production and not reveal too much of what she really feels about the songs. One can also point out that none of the songs has the intimacy of her earlier albums for Ode. Nevertheless, King's work is impressive here because of her singing which is assured in pitch and color, the keyboard work, and her flair for melody and harmony. "Jazzman" and "Nightingale" are the singles producer Lou Adler released, and they show all these attributes and ironically the more distant effect. "Thoroughbred" is King's most sparsely produced album, and Alder said that this was also his most uncomfortable work with the singer songwriter. Ironically, the collection is her most inspired album after "Tapestry" because of its immediate emotional appeal. Perhaps "Thoroughbred" addresses fewer topic or issues than "Wrap Around Joy," but it does examine its themes of love and love lost much more thoroughly (sorry about the pun) and honestly than the former album. Musically, King is most impressive with perhaps her best vocal work of any album and a rougher edged sound thanks to guitarists Waddy Watchel and Danny Kortchmar. One should note that Charles Larkey,King's second husband, who did superlative work is replaced by Lee Sklar who, nevertheless, is excellent. Finally, Tom Scott contributes to some of the tracks with some truly memorable sax work, but Carole's own piano work makes the album musically what it is, honest, moving, and straightforward. Songs such as "Only Love is Real," "I'd Like to Know You Better," and "Still Here" are among the best of King's catalogue. Together, they make one feel the joy of love found, the confusion of a breakup, or the remorse. There are no hestitations in recommending this combination of these two albums, and it is remarkable to hear two sides of this legendary singer-songwriter

5 out of 5 stars Nice Slick 1994 Banger by Willie Dennis! 4.5 Stars.......2007-03-15

Geto Boys alum Willie D came out with an interesting album in 1994: Play Witcha Mama. Produced by Derek "Grizz" Edwards, Crazy C, and many co prod. by D himself, the beats are sick. They range from hard mobbin, to southern fried funk, to smooth G-Funk. If you dig the political and social commentary of Ice Cube and the rawness and violent and sexual explicitness of Eazy-E, this album is for you. In fact, Ice Cube guest stars on the title track and the 2 have hella tight chemistry. I am not crazy about raunchy sex rap, but the beats of "Throat" and "Something Good" are sick, so even though the raps are explicity nasty, the beats slap with that laid back G-Funk heads from the south and west will roll to. I love the sophisticated G-Funk beats of "Creepin,'" "Whatcha Know About That," "Smoke 'M" and "Is It Real (My Mind Still Playin' Tricks On Me)." As for the lyrics, D does a hella good job touching on social and political issues like welfare, gang violence, and social problems in "N----s Are Dyin'" problems with the church "Guess My Religion." He gets gangsta on bangers like "Recipe 4 A Murder," "Smoke 'M," among others. He gets your tears goin on "Is It Real" beccause he brings up him imagining himself being with his beloved grandmother and family; then, he realizes he's at the cemetery looking at their tombstones, another installment in the Mind Playin Tricks epic (1) Geto Boys original, (2) Scarface's version, (3) Willie's. All in all, this album is a nice underappreciated gem from H-Town.

I've always been a little mystified that Geto Boys' solo albums are so unheard. Even though they're so often revered as one of the, if not the greatest southern rap group ever, outside of a handful of Scarface's albums their extensive solo catalogs remain heavily slept-on, to the point that ones like this are out of print. Willie D's third solo, 1994's "Play Witcha Mama," is one of numerous examples of good Geto Boys material that has largely been forgotten. While he actually wasn't a member of the group at the time of this release, the album as a whole isn't a far cry from a lot of the earlier Geto Boys work. Anyone who's ever heard him knows that Willie D is the king of controversy, sometimes to the point of being controversial simply for the sake of being controversial. Willie is, however, one of the most entertaining and wild characters ever to hit the microphone, and he executes his wildness to a crazed and paranoid perfection. I think I like him best when he shows another side, a side that digs a little deeper and searches for social relevance and consciousness. This has always been a trait of the Houston collective and Willie does it extremely well. The production on this album is the same simple bare-bones production found on albums like "We Can't Be Stopped," without much variety. The slow, woozy beats with whiny synths and heavy hooks is the Geto Boys trademark. This often appeals to me, and I think Willie sounds best over these type of beats, but I'm sure many listeners would find it monotonous at times as a lot of the beats sound very similar. A handful of the songs on the tracklist are a little redundant, and the skits are completely unnecessary, and even though Willie always sounds solid, there's nothing revolutionary lyrically on this album. Willie seems to be a follower of the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" philosophy, so he doesn't do anything too out of the ordinary here. It's not a perfect album by far, but it's a showcase of a great MC and an exceptional character in his prime. There really is a number of great tracks on "Play Witcha Mama" though, and I recommend it to the big Geto Boys fans and those who enjoy the mid-90s gangsta rap sound.

The album's opener is "Recipe 4 a Murder," a hard, threatening song with nice, slow production from a piano-laced beat. The chorus is great and it starts the album on a great note. The next song is "Is It Real (My Mind Still Playin' Tricks on Me)" which attempts to recapture the magic of the Geto Boys 1991 classic "Mind Playin' Tricks on Me" from the "We Can't Be Stopped" album. He tells more stories of urban paranoia over some southern-fried funk with a soulful chorus. While it's not a bad song, Scarface's "Mind Playin' Tricks `94" was released the same year and is a very similar song that was executed much better than this. An appearance from the legendary Ice Cube improves the otherwise average title track, which is followed by the very good "Creepin'." This song has a woozy g-funk beat and lyrics that show the best of Willie and his protégé Sho. "They Laphin' Atcha" is good but not particularly memorable, and the catchy "Throat" is a song of the standard Geto Boys sex rap that they made famous. "Somethin' Good" is another dirty song for the ladies like the last one, this one much funnier. On "Guess My Religion," Willie tackles the corruption in churches, it's a very interesting take. "Whatcha Know About That" is a well-produced, typically funky '94 deeper gangsta rap song with good storytelling and philosophizing from the rapper. "I Wanna F... Your Mama" is Willie at his nastiest, entertaining as ever. "Smoke'm" has the best beat on the album, a bass heavy g-funk banger. Lyrically, the highlight is "N... Is Dyin'," a deep song talking about the high death toll in the black community with a great beat. "U Got Homeboys, We Got Homeboys" is a strong track, and the album ends with "I Ain't Changin' S...," which shows Willie being his usual, non-conforming self.

"Play Witcha Mama" isn't essential material, but it's an enjoyable piece of 1994 Geto Boys material that's been lost through the cracks over the years. Casual fans might find this album unnecessary because it is fairly similar to a lot of the other music Willie has done over the years, and it's not even his best solo albums. But for those who have already enjoyed "We Can't Be Stopped," "The Diary," or "The Resurrection," I recommend that you pick this up if you come across it.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite discs.......2006-04-06

There is no track worth skipping. I place this cd next to Season of da Siccness, Playboy 7 an We Can't Be Stopped. Awesome old school jammers.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece from one of the most under-rated rappers.......2004-08-17

A true gem of an album from Willie D, often respected but not widely celebrated. A true pioneer and rap heavy weight. If you enjoy Eightball and MJG, Geto Boys, Ice cube, Ice T and E-40, then this is one for you, a slice of oldish-school gangsta rap with some social commentary provided.
This album includes the classic "Play witcha mama" with Ice cube.
Also check out, his other albums.

    Album Description

Evelyn Ryan (Julianne Moore) is a devoted housewife and mother of ten in the 1950s. Her husband (Woody Harrelson) can't seem to make ends meet, but that doesn't stop the car from breaking down, the mortgage coming due and the bills from piling up. It falls to Evelyn to defy the conventions of the day and find a way to keep her family together with the odds stacked against them. Applying her remarkable resourcefulness and an uncommon wit, Evelyn finds her own way in the profitable jingle contests popular in the 1950s and'60s.

Composer John Frizzell adds his own sophisticated sound to the compositions and brings on two great musicians - Sara and Sean Watkins - to play fiddle and guitar. The Soundtrack includes recordings by The Ames Brothers, Les Paul & Mary Ford, Dee Carstensen, Kay Starr and new recordings by k.d. lang "I'm Sitting on top of the World" and the film's Woody Harrelson.

The Simon and Schuster book The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio: How my mother raised 10 kids on 25 words or less (by Terry Ryan) is currently available.

    2 out of 5 stars What Happened?.......2000-07-10

It took me many months trying to find "somethin' to blaze to" and "rated g" (T.A.'s first two albums) after finally finding them I was completly satisfied. Each of those albums would have gotten 5 stars, but this one however is another story. I realize groups from '93 had to change their style (no more chronic style beats) to accomodate the new sounds of '97, but other than world war 3 the beats were unimaginative, boring and sounded like anyone could produce them. T.A. had amazing lyrics for gangsta rappers back then, but in '97 you had to come up with some thought provoking material which T.A. couldn't do. Bad lryics with bad beats equals bad album. Sorry for the knock on this one guys, but thanks a lot for your first two albums if your reading this.

I grew up listening to Carole, and still love her to this day! Thank you Mom for the introduction:) She is inspiring and uplifting to all:)

    5 out of 5 stars "WRAP AROUND JOY": CAROLE KING'S POP-ROCK MASTERPIECE.......2007-01-17

In 1974, while Carly and Joni were battling it out for top honors amidst the proliferation of female singer-songwriters at the time, Carole King released "Wrap Around Joy", a mostly joyful pop-rock entry into the fold, showing that she was still one of the mighty queens of the rock world.

Of course her endeavor was tremendously aided by the huge hit single, "Jazzman", with Tom Scott's memorable sax performance; but "Wrap Around Joy" has many other noteworthy songs.

Carole's power piano chords of the sing-along opening cut "Nightingale" (a second top ten hit for her from this album) really capture the listener's attention right from the get-go. "My Lovin' Eyes" and "You Gentle Me" are wonderful pop-rock confections, as is the title track and "You're Something New", one of my favorite Carole King start-of-love songs ever. Conversely, "You Go You're Way, I'll Go Mine" is one of the best break-up songs I've ever known.

"We Are All In This Together" is a great song of unification of the human race and is, therefore, quite an IMPORTANT message still today in this mad, mad, mad, mad world in which we live. I love the optimism of this song especially when balanced with the closing song, "The Best Is Yet To Come", which never fails to lift my spirit. Songs like these make me very grateful to Carole King for the solace her music has given my life on so many occasions. Listen and see if you don't know what I mean.

    4 out of 5 stars Powerful!.......2002-11-27

If you are a new fan of Carole King and have never heard this album then you need to add this to your collection. The song "We Are All in This Together" will resonate as especially powerful given the events since 9-11. Sit back and take in the beauty of Carole King's lyrics. This may not be one of her most popular albums, but it is one of her best.

5 out of 5 stars This is my all-time favorite King album! She's the tops!.......2001-10-11

I've been a fan of Carole's since her Tapestry days, and "It's Too Late" will always remind me of my high school graduation (summer of 1971, natch!). Alas, I confess a certain disappointment regarding Carole's follow ups to Tapestry. "Music" was just ok; "Rhymes and Reasons" left me flat, and "Fantasy" seemed to be an odd misfire. By the time September 1974 rolled around and "Wrap Around Joy" was released, I had low expectations...then, boom! I heard the first single, "Jazzman," and rejoiced. The album soon followed, and I immediately fell in love with it! Vocally, Carole has never been better (except on her latest, "Love Makes the World"), and the tunes are diverse, catchy, melodic, and absolutely wonderful. I especially love "My Lovin' Eyes" and "The Best is Yet to Come," with "Wrap Around Joy" and "You Gentle Me" falling close behind. I still have my original LP from 1974 and just added the CD--it's fun to alternate between the two! Incidentally, this was the last of Carole's albums to hit #1 on the Billboard charts--check it out! You won't be disappointed. Great music always ages well, and that's exactly what you'll find on "Wrap Around Joy!"

4 out of 5 stars Many hits besides "Jazzman".......2001-06-23

Another album I had on vinyl in my younger days that I'm replacing on CD. So many great tunes. "Nightingale" "You go your way", "You're something new" etc. This album used to make me smile, I think it will again.
