Customer Reviews:
A hardcore/crossover classic.......2007-05-30
After touring both with Ozzfest and Sepultura, Hatebreed's sophomore album, 1997's "Satisfaction is the Death of Desire," made it official: they had successfully crossed over from hardcore to metal. Aside from East Coast hardcore-reminiscent lyrics and song titles (see "Empty Promises" and "Betrayed By Life"), this Connecticut-based quintet's music sounds unquestionably metal. "Satisfaction" is clearly influenced by old-school thrash and death metal as much as any other genre. It is a complete hurricane of simple, low-string, grinding guitar riffs, pummeling, jackhammering, raw-sounding drum beats, and Sepultura-like barks from vocalist Jamey Jasta. Hatebreed sound like a well-oiled machine as the band members attack their instruments. The guitarists lead the charge - their streamlined, chainsaw-stutter riffs and rumbling, bottom-heavy leads blaze through the songs and carve a path for the rest of the band; then Christ Beattie lays down some equally-as-rigid bass lines, and drummer Jamie Pushbutton hammers away at his skins as if they were oil cans he's trying to crack open. Add a particularly raw production job that leaves the edges on the music, and the end result is fourteen belligerent, ripping, muscular, abrasive, and bludgeoning mosh pit anthems that clock in at a combined total of just under half an hour long. They're simple yet effective little songs - not overly technical, musical, or intricate songs - but heavy, aggressive, raw, genuine, hooky, and visceral enough to leave an impression.
None of the songs really catch the listener's ear as a glowing highlight, because the whole album is kind of one long, discordant (almost cacophonous), continuously flowing song. But listeners looking for a few standout tracks are advised to check out the machine gun guitar-drum give-and-take on the album opener; the strong, hefty, churning guitar lead and smashing drums on "Burn The Lies"; the buzzsaw riffs and memorable, shout-along chorus in "Before Dishonor"; the lumbering riffs and catchy, bellowed chorus in "Conceived Through An Act Of Violence" and "Last Breath"; the blistering "Afflicted Past"; and the mini, rapid-fire drum solo that begins "Betrayed By Life."
At only 25 minutes, "Satisfaction is the Death of Desire" may seem like a fairly short album, but anybody who has heard the disc should tell you that running time is just about the right length - it's long enough to leave a scar, and short enough to avoid becoming stale. All in all "SITDOD" is a definite hardcore/crossover/Nineties classic, a must own for fans of the genre, and as of 1997 (the year it was released), it was the most brutal album Slayer hadn't released in several years.
Short and Sweet!.......2006-04-01
Ah the memories.... getting my head stopped on by a crowd of crazed adrenaline charged moshers... those were the good ol days. I remember the NYC hardcore scene back in the early-mid 90s... bands like Madball, Bulldoze, 25 to life, Dog Eat Dog (to name a few) dominated the scene. Music has turned many different corners since then. It's always nice to pull out this Hatebreed CD (or Mp3s now)and listen to one of the finest examples of east coast hardcore. Put it on and crank it up!
Good metal........2006-01-19
They are no doubt talented in their genre of music. Very fast paced music as always, this CD is full of hardcore guitar riffs. I can't help but to always picture a crazy mosh pit involved in every one of their songs. If I were to choose a single song to decide whether or not to buy this CD, I would pick the song "Last Breath". Some good metal. Rhapsody categorized this album as well as Hatebreed in general under "Metalcore". Remember that if you are going to buy this album, this is Hatebreed so expect a whole lotta screaming. Hatebreed to me is the official "head banging, mosh pit" band of today, and this album definitely shows it. It even comes with a poetic title.
Dont buy this!.......2005-10-16
I like alot of music but this I dont.I dont even think this should be called music.Every song sound the same. This cd is plain horribal.Dont buy it unless your on the highschool football team so you can fit in with the other jocks.
A Classic That Will Go Down In History.......2005-04-09
[...]. Hatebreed isn't death metal. They're straight in your face hardcore mixed with the brutality of metal, a winning combination. Come on, who could not love the brutality Jamey Jasta and gang deliver straight towards your face? I'm sure you've never heard of Hatebreed in 1997, unless you're a hardcore fan. I was only 9 years old at that time, so I have an excuse. "Before Dishonor" brings the guitar work of Sepultura mixed in with the hardcore tinges of Warzone and Earth Crisis, without the straight edge stuff (I think drugs are wicked. They took the lives of such great people, like Chris Farley, Brad Nowell and Layne Staley). "Before Dishonor" has Jamey's vocals a tad bit deeper than on his new stuff, but it's still great. Slightly better. (I still love Hatebreed.) "Last Breath" is another classic, even though it's only a minute and a half long. It still delivers right to your ears. It's just that great. The whole freakin' CD is awesome. What are you waiting for? Get off you ass and buy it!

There's no question that Ministry's 1996 album Filth Pig was its weakest effort in years, but for anyone who thought the industrial engine had run out of steam, the band's side-project album Pure Chewing Satisfaction is concrete proof that Ministry's creative juices are still flowing blood red. Lard features the band along with ex-Dead Kennedys vocalist Jello Biafra, and this, the group's second disc, is an electrifying blend of speed, precision, and political satire. Returning to the propulsive, crunching guitars and cracking drums that defined Ministry in the early '90s, Lard makes up for lost ground, while at the same time plunging full-throttle into the future with cutting-edge production and biting, contemporary lyrics. "I went to Blockhead Video to rent a tape of people making love/Couldn't find no lovin' here/It's a family store, see here/ ... I settled for Faces of Death, but they rented it to some kid," sings Biafra in "Generation Execute" in his trademarked nasal whine. --Jon Wiederhorn
Customer Reviews:
Lard still sounds great despite the long gap.......2005-06-14
1990's The Last Temptation Of Reid was a great LP for the unique industrial band Lard. Seven years later, Pure Chewing Satisfaction arrived.
It's hard for one to deny that 97's Satisfaction is much more than variations of Reid at first (and they mostly are), but the key is to keep those variations interesting, and Lard does precisely that with top-notch production, and a NIN-ish atmosphere. Most importantly Lard, is political, preachy, dark, and therefore, almost sure to affend mainstream conservatives.
Biafra's social messages are filtered through humor, and the humor may sound somewhat dated, but it's an honesty that was reflective of the mid 90's where former President's Bush Sr. and Bill Clinton (at least in Jello's perspective) caused more disruption than solutions.
Standouts are : the driving War Pimp Reniassance, the atmospheric Moths, the dark irony of Generation Execute, and the pulsing beat of Sidewinder
Should have stayed with the dead kennedys.......2002-10-18
...lard is pretty ..good but the high pitched ... vocals of Jello dont exactly mix with the muddy industrial sounds of ministry. Overall the cd is good...
dks vs ministry =smart music to dance and think about!!!.......2002-01-16
well this to me is a album that definately deserves a couple of listens to kind of grow on ya.when you have the likes of jello and al jourgensen to deal with..this is really the same concept thing as either the dks or ministry the only difference they have made one hell of a combo together entirely.not the gothic slam thing of ministry or the surf punk thing of the dks but taking the 2 bands concepts and making the both of them work together making more of a groove in your face polital satire that either you can dance to or think to.also with a increadible production sound that will give anyone a reason at first to listen to this album again.so if you like both the dks (jello)and ministry you will definately like this one but you must really be a fan of both bands on this one to get the full effect of this album .thats why i only give it 4 stars because there are very few fans of both bands together.which is a shame!!!!!
filth Pig is Great.......2001-11-23
The editor has no taste. Filth Pig is Ministrys best album. Its slow, but it has such a great sound and great songwriting. I even prefer it over Psalm 69. But now for Pure Chewing Satisfaction. Its Lard, yes. But its not The Last Temptation of Reid. There are no songs as "Fork Boy" or "Can god fill teeth". Just a few godd songs, most of them so la la (for lard), but good compared to other industrial bands and albums.
Jello Biafra makes a real dent in the music industry!.......2001-06-07
Wow. With such an unsavory approach at "industrial," Mr. Jourgenson and friends have teamed up with ex-Dead Kennedys frontman Jello Biafra. Dropping the faux-political-satirist persona, Jello takes on a more lighthearted appeal with his words. No cussing throughout the record, a good thing indeed. With Dead Kennedys the cussing was used as a tool of shockrock, in my opinion, it degraded the musical prowess altogether. The only group in recent times to pull of the use of the F-word and not come off as completely juvenile are TOOL, who manage to somehow cross the void of immaturity into the theatre of emotion with their words.
The mid-paced industrial beats are a departure from the distortion-induced, fast-paced rhomps found on Ministry albums, but that's not a bad thing, either. Mixed with Jello's newfound slow singing with a slow whine for an overtone...the mix is profound! The CD provides a relaxing industrial/post-punk soundscape that I personally enjoy sleeping to. If you're a fan of any of Al's projects then you should most likely enjoy this. But if you're more the Dead Kennedys type, I'm not so sure...I guess all I can say is give it a try. It's love or hate. 5 Stars by my opinion...but I've given it 4 because of the mix of such unsavory musicians...it would most likely fool hardened fans of one band or the other into listening to something that's really not up their alley. Give it a shot!

Album Description
Soul Satisfaction is the first neo-soul compilation to feature both high-profile artists alongside emerging cult favorites. It uses the term "nu-soul" to emphasis the progressive nature of the music it presents. A number of the tracks on it have not been exposed previously. It mixes widely-acclaimed artists such as Rachelle Ferrell, Zap Mama, Rahsaan Patterson, Tony Rich Project and Me'Shell Ndegeocello alongside overlooked talents such as Adriana Evans and Rosie Gaines and emerging forces such as Hil St. Soul, Amp Fiddler and Ledisi. As such it is a snapshot of a spectrum of fascinating, challenging artists who give the lie to those who say the current music scene lacks quality artists.

I really enjoyed this CD. It has some really nice cuts, and I can listen to it over and over.
A Very Nice collection.............2004-11-16
this collection of "Nu-Soul Music" is a hot one. most of the songs have been released already but when they are put here together, it a lovely thing! the artist on this cd go from the "famous" (ZAP MAMA, Me'SHELL NDEGEOCELLO,RACHELL FERRELL) to the "almost famous" (RASHAN PATTERSON,OLU AND TONY RICH), to the "who the hell is that" (POSTIVE FLOW AND ANDREUS)....plus those artist with an underground following (LEDISI,ERIC ROBERSON, HIL ST. SOUL).....of the 14 tracks, the ones that stood
out for me where:
1. Andreus-Rebellious Love (never heard of the brother but the song is nice)
2. Ledisi-So Right (i love her music, she can do no wrong)
3. The Tony Rich Project-Let Me (this song is HOTTT!!)
4. Rachelle Farrell-Nothing In The Middle (it was recorded live and Rachelle shows her vocal skills!)
5. Zap Mama-Miss Q-N (the lyrics of this song are deeeeep!)
6. Me'Shell Ndegocello-Andromeda & the Milky Way (the title is enough!)
im not saying the rest arent good, these are just the songs that moved me. im sure they will move you as well. the cd is really worth pickin up. ONELOVE

Customer Reviews:
Why is this a Double CD?.......2006-04-28
OK, I love the Rolling Stones. I love COVERS of Rolling Stones songs. And some of these are great - they touch upon the hard-hitting sound of the Stones, and take it even further - some of these tracks would sound right at home in a blaxploitation film like "Superfly". There are even some very subtle nods to other songs, the cover of "Satisfaction" by Assemble contains a bass line very similar to "Dear Prudence" and Muddy Waters' "Let's Spend the Night Together" reminded me a lot of "Sunshine of Your Love".
But WHY is this a 2-CD set? The second CD contains the EXACT same songs as the first CD does, just arranged in a different order. It's labeled as "4Hero Mix" but the songs sound exactly the same to me. If I wanted to hear the tracks in a different order, I could just PROGRAM MY CD PLAYER or my iTunes to play them in whatever order I like.
Don't buy this thinking you're getting 30 songs, there are really only 15. If that's worth the money to you, then go ahead. Funky covers of the Rolling Stones are fine, but don't make me pay twice for the same disc.

If you're looking for a starting place for Lonnie Brooks, this isn't it. The basic band of Brooks, Tom Giblin on keyboards, Augustus Taylor on Bass and Kevin Mitchell on drums work hard to hold it all together but there are two main problems. Firstly Ronnie Baker Brookes muscles in on the action, and he's nothing like as good as Dad. Secondly the songs, particularly the Brooks' efforts are pretty forgettable. The best tracks on the album are are "Temporary Insanity" and Denise La Salles "It's lying time again". The only dual composition that works is "If the price is right" and that's because Koko Taylor takes the vocals.Buy the others first!

Classic Rock, Ultimate Unplugged, String Quartet arrangements of rock 'n roll
Customer Reviews:
Trendy Music for all ages.......2000-11-14
Perfect! Great tunes! I loved it and highly recommend it! A nice surprise to music lovers of all ages.
Innovative, perfectly performed - watch out Led Zeppelin!.......1999-07-27
If you are a rock and roll fan, this collection of classic rock and roll, arranged for string quartet by Juilliard-trained musicians, will make a classical music lover out of you. If you are a classical music fan, the arrangements and musicality will make you appreciate the complexities of contemporary and classic rock. Every song contains nuances and influences of the greatest composers (Vivaldi in "Scarborough Fair", Bartok in "Satisfaction", George Harrison in "Friends", Copeland in "Blackbird"). The arrangements, especially in "Sympathy" and "Stairway", are faithful to the originals. The "Who" material ("Who Are You"/See Me, Feel Me - Pinball Wizard") is energetic and makes you remember how great "Tommy" was. All in all, the CD is great to listen to if you are looking for a change of pace, and it's even better when you take time to really listen to the music and the arrangements. Highly Recommended for any connoisseur of music.
