Heaven knows there's no shortage of good, nerdy guitar pop in the world, but that shouldn't dissuade fans of Possum Dixon from stating their preference for the L.A.-based band that nabbed its oddball name from a fugitive on America's Most Wanted. The group's best songs contain a witty, wise-guy lyrical sensibility, while the music throbs with punk/surf-style intensity. Maybe it's not music for the ages, but raging, smart-ass rockers like "Emergency's About to End," "Go West," "Crashing Your Planet," and "Skid Marks" still sound just fine. --Daniel Durchholz

I never though I would listen to an album more than the 600 times I listened to Possum Dixon. Now, I can truly say that Star Maps is the all time CD for most times played. Why? Because Ray (the keyboard) does things to you that you want done to you in ways you don't even realize you want. I've played this record for 50 people. Each one of them says the same thing. First, who is this? Second, this is so differnt from the usual stuff on the radio. Third, man, I bet this would be a great live show. Fourth, Hey I bought that Star Maps CD. Fifth, I can't stop listening to this thing! If you are smart enough to get to this review, you are so close to having a disk that will absolutely make you happy every time you hear the opening strain. You will also feel slightly depressed when the CD is over. Not because there are any unhappy tunes, but because you don't want it to end. Trust me, you will hit replay until the digits wear off.

5 out of 5 stars A rare gem in a display case full of 90's gravel.......2003-02-05

Amazingly I met the band in Tulsa by accident when they were doing an in-store performance at Mohawk Music (R.I.P.). They were loading up their van and I asked them who they were and then bought one of their c.d.'s and had them sign it without even knowing what they sounded like (they were great guys). All that aside, the c.d. is incredible, quick, intelligent, well-written and certainly worthy of more accolades than I could ever put forth. If you can find this c.d., buy it, first because it is awesome and secondly because its probably in a bargain bin near you.

5 out of 5 stars The lost gem of 90s hipster rock.......2002-06-29

I just picked this album recently for [a price] and I must say it was the best deal I have ever gotten in my entire life. These guys are masters of quirky, catchy, well-written, well-played, accessible pop rock. There are comparisons to Weezer but I can't stand those guys so I'm telling you that this is better than that. It carries in the same vein as the Pixies and Pavement, although cleaner and easier to swallow.

From the frantic opening bass riff to "Nerves," this album is going to grab you and not let go. You'll find yourself humming the chorus to "Watch That Girl Destroy Me" for weeks. I think everyone can see a bit of themselves in all of these songs....

It's truly a shame that this album is basically out of print now. I don't give out 5 star ratings a lot but this really earned it.

5 out of 5 stars Impress Your Friends!.......2002-03-09

I discovered Possum Dixon at 3:30 one Sunday morning in 1995. "Watch The Girl Destroy Me" was screened on our late night music TV program, and by the time Robert Zabrecky launched into the chorus for the 3rd time, I had become a fan. Were they one hit wonders? No - fortunately the album didn't turn out to be an exercise in pop-music futility, as upon listening to their debut LP, the self titled "Possum Dixon," each track offered up jingly-jangly guitars, humourous lyrics, and memorable, hummable, irresistable choruses. About 9 of the 11 songs on this album could have been released as singles, no kidding. The album became an instant party favourite during the Summer, what with singing/shouting/pleading choruses like "Marry me baby/ sleep with me baby/ we'll sleep with the lights on/ and we'll sleep with our clothes on."
Possum Dixon are yet another band who exist between genres; who cannot be pigeonholed too easily into punk, alternative rock, or pop music, but who nevertheless don't make you sorry that you took the effort to buy their record.
I come back to this record every 6 months, and every time it sounds as fresh, as relevant, and as personal as it did when I first found it. "Nerves" is a well constructed anthem to those who find themselves in a dead-end day job, and who maintain a social life; In Buildings (she makes me shake now) contains a whizz-bang wet-your-pants chord progression; Watch The Girl I hope you've heard by now; She Drives is an up-tempo junk-rock tale infused with harmonica and the hook "you look like a picture from a magazine." I can only think of a young, energetic, American version of Elvis Costello and the Attractions when I am asked to explain what Possum Dixon sounds like.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best pop records of all time.......1999-12-17

This is one of few cds I can listen to over and over again. It is absolutly flawless. Buy it now. Theyre later albums are good, but this is the best.

5 out of 5 stars Paasion at the edge of Obscurity.......1999-11-17

What a romp. From the fun of "Watch this Girl destroy me" to the defiant "Executive Slacks."

This is the ultimate in cool. The music is not pretentious, yet it is not simplistic. Lines like "Understanding nothing can be so conforting, Understanding you is like Biology."

There is something desturbing about some of the Lyrics as well. Not that this is bad, it just adds depth.

Enjoy.

For New Sheets, Possum Dixon snagged the talented production hand of Ric Ocasek, former lead singer of the Cars. Ironically (or maybe not), the disc bears a strong sonic resemblance to both the Cars and the Ocasek-produced debut from Weezer. The crunchy new-wave sound pans out well for Possum Dixon--after their first couple of so-so releases, they finally seem to be getting the hang of crafting smart rock & roll. The first few tracks are a bit soggy, but lookout around track 6, when "Always Engines" kicks in. It's here that Possum Dixon truly begin to hit their stride; even though they seem to be doing the same old "songs about girls and what they do to us guys" that every other alterna-band is doing, there's plenty of aural ballast to keep the songs on New Sheets playing in your head for days at a time. --Jason Josephes

5 out of 5 stars best possum dixon album EVER.......2004-10-05

I love this album start to finish. I have all possum dixons cd's and honestly this is the best they have put out. I am a sucker for catchy pop music and this feeds my cravings! Do yourself a favor and get this album.

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad! But not that good!.......2004-06-16

Good album but not great. Some very good songs where you can see clearly Ric Ocasek's touch like the phenomenal tiltle track but overall not as consistent as it could be. Some enjoyable songs nontheless.

3 out of 5 stars What the heck happened here?!.......2002-07-03

Possum Dixon emerged in the early-mid 90s with a catchy, quirky, and unique sound. Then, somehow after less than 5 years, they ended up here, with this album.

This album is not catchy, quirky, or unique. They brought in Ric Ocasek, of the Cars and more recently famous for his work with Weezer, and the plan blew up in their faces. The album was left sounding like both the Cars and Weezer, two groups that Possum Dixon were superior to. At best, the songs here sound like a poor man's Pavement (but then again, the same could be said for Weezer). I know its sad, but I really can't remember how a single track on this album goes and I just listened to it an hour ago.

Possum Dixon writes good songs and has talent, so this album isn't total throwaway, but it is a huge diappointment.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Star........Top to Bottom!.......1999-01-24

It's disappointing that Possum Dixon hasn't received more attention for this album. New Sheets ranks as my TOP SLEEPER pick in 1998. From beginning to end New Sheets is strong both mucically and lyrically. Produced by Ric Ocasek you can hear early Cars influence, mixed with the distinct style of Possum. One listen to Holding (Lenny's Song), Now What?, Plan B or What you Mean will get your adrenaline pumping to tight guitar riffs, pounding drums and catchy lyrics. This is what music is meant to be.

5 out of 5 stars Heartbreak City, here we come.......1998-11-13

A long time fan of this band, I first was surprised that the follow-up to 1996's VASTLY under-rated "Star Maps" was as good, or in some ways better. Second, I was a little let down the band is pared down to a trio following the stormy departure of keyboardist Robert O'Sullivan. Because of that, this is the most guitar-heavy work the band has produced and because the songwriting duties are squarely on bassist Rob Zabrecky's shoulders, the most focused. draw all the Cars comparisons you want, it becomes clear after a few listens it's all part of a design to create a heartbreaking, euphoric album equivelent to producer Rick Okasek's opus "Heartbeat City". Inasmuch as these are songs populated by the disaffected, post-moderns of Southern CA, trying to be cool about being broke up. By the sound of it, it's going to be an endless bummer...
