Unnecessary.......2001-04-18
While it would be, of course, somewhat unfair to rate this CD recording of some of the world's most famous pieces for virtuoso violin the same way one would for a mature, older artist's recordings, it is horrendous marketing strategy on the part of Sony Classical to release this three CD set on the premise that they are "brilliant," as stated on the back of the CD case. They are anything but, as a quick listen to any one of the three CDs will reveal to the discerning ear.
The first two CDs are mainly concerned with Mae playing the Kabalevsky, the Tchaikovsky Concerto in D, and the Beethoven Concerto in D -- all highly acclaimed pieces aimed at showing off not only the speed, strength, physical and mental endurance of the violinist, but also, certainly, the tone production and "fingers," as Sarah Chang would have liked to put it. Mae fails on almost all the above counts. While she professes to have a high degree of passion for the Tchaikovsky and the Beethoven (Mae gushes about learning them by heart long before her instructor had the chance to teach them to her), the pieces are a great disappointment. The first thing to jarr the ear is her tone (a scratchy, unconfident, and extremely tinny one, at that) and, rather surprising, her lack of capability at pulling off the cadenzas. It is beyond anyone's understanding how the then young Mae's speed and technical accuracy could be so highly acclaimed as they are by some quarters when she falters and stumbles along the notes, mainly in the higher registers. This is most apparent in the extremely poor playing of Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy, where she sometimes lags behind the entire orchestra by a few wrenching notes as she struggles to catch up and keep in tempo.
The pieces on the Virtuoso Album CD aren't worth much -- colourless, soulless renditions of miniatures that have been performed better by countless of other violinists, at every measure of age (Chang does a splendid job of the Carmen Fantasy, and she recorded it in the studios when she was only nine years old).
The only redeeming piece of the entire three CD set I can think of must be the Russian Dance from Swan Lake. Although her bowing is rarely, if ever, confident and full, her thin, wavering vibrato ever used effectively, she opens the piece with a vigour that isn't seen in any other of the pieces.
It is rather unfortunate that Mae has never really progressed far, classically -- a look at her later recordings (the Classical Collection 2) and her live performance at the Royal Albert Hall (where the Shostakovich Piano Trio No. 2, Moses Variation on a G String, and a few others were played) drives the point home painfully. I am a fan, of course, but not one of her classical side -- the techno-pop-fusion music masks her flaws well enough to allow one to forget that one is listening to a very mediocre violinist at work.
Vanessa-Mae as a Child Prodigy at 12 and 13.......2000-11-14
Vanessa-Mae: is the beautiful young Singaporean violinist with her flowing hair, gorgeous figure, pop star clothes, electric violin, laser and light shows, websites, and rock band just a media creation, or is she instead a modern-day Pagannini or Liszt, a true virtuoso with a flair for showmanship? In other words, can she play? This three CD set of her early recordings, made when she was only 12 and 13 years old, answers the question authoritatively. Although there are, of course, some flaws, the fact remains that even at this early age Vanessa-Mae was a stunning performer. At thirteen she played better than many profession musicians have at thirty, myself included. Listen, for example, to the stunning beginning of Sarasate's Concert Fantasy on `Carmen".
There is a certain tension between the interpretations of the soloist and the conductor occasionally, especially when Vanessa-Mae wants to play faster than the conductor will allow. This is in fact my biggest criticism of the recording; but these ego wars are not only the bloodiest but also the most common of musical slaughterhouses, and it is no surprise that such a young performer would get caught up in it. Otherwise, the performance is terrific--intonation is impeccable, interpretation confident. In particular, Vanessa-Mae has a commanding technique in the highest range, where her tone absolutely soars. Only very rarely, and then only at the very end of a rising run, does her intonation slip slightly. And she varies her style appropriately to suit the music--at the time of this recording she'd not yet gotten to playing Vivaldi with a rock band. In Fritz Kreisler's Schon Rosmarin, I can practically see her in a ball gown with her hair up in ringlets, performing this for the Viennese elite at a society soiree. It seems appropriately schmatzy to me, and it provides a link between the Classical and popular sides of Vanessa-Mae featured in this collection.
The set consists of three CDs, the first the Russian Album, the second, the Viennese Album, and the third, the Virtuoso Album. This last title is somewhat curious, as only two-thirds of the way through do the selections take a virtuoso turn. Otherwise, they are pops and light classics that are not at all demanding of the performer. This CD has a theme of inspiration from various sources, and the selections are categorized as "inspired by the classics, inspired by cinema, inspired by pop and folk culture, and inspired by opera" and include such things as arrangements of Brahms Lullaby, Mancini's theme to The Pink Panther, and Richard Rogers' My Favorite Things. Unfortunately, the Beatles also make an appearance--I love the Beatles, but Lennon and McCartney's Yellow Submarine is a testament to the perils of drug use. Whatever fondness society has for this piece--and I know they do, as my 10 year old daughter is learning it on recorder for her music class at school--this affection must come from our memories of youth, the fun of the 70's and the association of the imaginative animation by Peter Maxx of the movie, perhaps even the symbolism, arcane as it may be, of the text. Objectively, though, the tune is as trivial and banal as anything ever written, and here it gets turned into a sort of mini-violin concerto. Call the Blue Meanies and the Apple-Bonkers to put a stop to that!
But the other performances and pieces on this CD more than make up for this miscue. The first CD features Violin Concerti by Kabelevsky and Tchaikovsky, and Beethoven's violin concerto is featured on the second CD with a gorgeous performance. Vanessa-Mae clearly *can* play--she is much more than just a media creation. This collection, a portrait of the artist as a young woman, proves the point admirably.

Great early recording.......2000-11-11
I should of course first disclose that I do not know very much about classical music, but as far as I can tell this is a fantastic recording.
This 3-cd set is a reissue of the early classical recordings that Vanessa-Mae made before crossing over into pop. It is a fantastic set because it offers a wide range of music: Tchaaikovsky, Kreisler, Beethoven, Paganini, Sarasate, Bach, Brahms and others. Vanessa-Mae's playing is fantastic throughout. I have always felt that she is a much stronger classical than pop player -- she really does not bring much uniqueness to pop music (just electronic supporting instruments) -- however, her remarkable classical mastery is easily evident even to an inexperienced person like me.
All-in-all, the recording is remarkably mature and holds up well in comparison to VM's later classical recordings. Most highly recommended!

Customer Reviews:
Early Ernest Tubb Box Set.......2007-03-20
Here is yet another Bear Family records Ernest Tubb Boxset; this one covering his "'50's" career. These are not the earliest years, where Ernest's sound was nearly that of a soloist with an background band, but rather, these are the years of Ernest where the Troubadors really took off and became an entity of their own. There are 5 CDs here, all perfectly mixed and recorded with superb sound. There are many hard to find Tubb numbers included here; as well as the more famous "There's a Little Bit of Everything in Texas", "Slippin' Around", and "Walkin the Floor". This set also contains a few numbers where the Wilburn Brothers provide backup/accompanying vocals, as well as a tune or two where Doyle & Teddy Wilburn own the stage....a real treat. There is the usual Bear Family large booklet covering the career of ET during this timeframe and a detailed history of the discography. Plain and simple, you cannot be disappointed with this one. A+++++++
This is the real thing.......2005-04-29
If you're looking to buy an Ernest Tubb collection at this Amazon site, this Yellow Rose of Texas set is the only one you should consider; this is the only one of all the collections offered here (at least among those that offer song previews) that features the original recordings. Compare these recordings of Walkin' the Floor, Driftwood on the River and Filipino Baby with those on the other collections on this site and you'll see these are the original recordings featuring Billy Byrd and the original Texas Troubadors. The others are just lame remakes that don't even come close to doing justice to the original recordings.
Man! How could anyone put such a superb box set down!.......2005-02-28
Ernest had some of the greatest recordings ever in the 50's and this set has them all from 1954-1960. His remakes of his old hits from 1958/59 are truly outstanding! One thing I love about artists like Ernest Tubb is the way they update their older sound to a newer stereo sound and there are 24 celections starting on disc 3. You even get to hear some backings by the Jordanaires and the Anita Kerr singers which is most unusual for Ernest Tubb since he usually never used backings on his songs. They are excellent remakes I'll tell you! This set is highly recommended!
Could have been better.......2004-02-15
I'm sorry but this set was a poor performance by one of the great country singers.
It is a lifeless rehash of his career long after he had reached the peak and was on the way down. I expected a remastering of his older records when he was the best but received a major disapointment
Everything from 1954-1960.......2002-02-20
Bear Family Records has put together some excellent cd packages over the years. This set features Ernest Tubbs' career during the years when rock-n-roll was causing a stir and taken away many from the country audience. Ernest held his own experimenting with rock and pop influences to a certain degree but never straying away from his trademark honky tonk sound. Billy Byrd picks it out on most of the cuts and Leon Rhodes takes it from there in 1960 (and of course Buddy Emmons on steel). So set up two glasses and listen to the Texas Troubadour

Album Description
"Christopher O'Riley At the Break" is the new compact disc by the renowned concert pianist and host of "From the Top," the hit public radio showcase for America's best pre-collegiate classical musicians.
This collection of 29 works for solo piano is a compilation of pieces O'Riley played on "From the Top," which is heard on more than 200 radio stations nationwide. These pieces were performed at the mid-point of the broadcasts, a required break of approximately 2 minutes during which many stations insert locally generated announcements.
According to Chris O'Riley, "It depends on one's local station, and its own use of `the breaks.' This collection serves as a fondly renewed acquaintance with some favorites of mine as well as some pieces a bit further off the beaten path. For other listeners, this is a great group of exquisite miniatures - a premiere entree into many new worlds."
From the Top is a creation of Concert Productions, Inc. in association with WGBH Radio Boston and New England Conservatory, its home and educational partner. Public Radio International distributes the program. From the Top receives support from the U.S. Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Council, as well as individuals, foundations and corporations.

From the Keyboard.......2002-03-09
Fans of NPR's popular show "From the Top," a showcase for young classical musicians, will recognize Chris O'Riley as the show's fun loving host. Thanks in no small part to O'Riley's easygoing way with kids and his fine accompaniments, the show not only presents good music, but manages to be playful and funny as well. This collection of 29 piano pieces are taken from those O'Riley plays during the mid-program break on the show, and demonstrate the depth and range of his talent. Included with the CD information are short notes by O'Riley in which he describes his connection to each piece and what he is trying to accomplish when he plays it. Particular favorites of mine include Guastavino's Cantilena, No. 4, Rachmanioff's Lilacs, Op. 21, No. 5 and Rameau's Tambourin. However, fans of Chopin, Debussy, Prokfiev and Mozart will also find something to satisfy. This is a CD that I will be returning to again and again
From the Top, and from the heart........2002-01-26
Gorgeous music beautifully played. This is a wonderfully eclectic set of pieces, some familiar, many rare, all of them played with warmth and personality. I love Christopher's eclectic tastes. The Guastavino pieces were new to me, and they're gems. The Rameau is exquisitely played. The Rachmaninoff is familiar, but it's awfully nice to hear it played with a fresh personal feeling. Pieces like the Milhaud, or Poulenc's "Babar and Celeste", or O'Riley's own transcription of the Delibes, or Maxwell-Davies' "Stromness" -- all of them are wonderfully evocative. The program notes are every bit as thoughtful and engaging as you'd expect given such a marvellous selection and such stylish playing.
There are some real treasures here. And you might also enjoy "From the Top," the public radio show O'Riley hosts. Best thing to happen to music since Bernstein's Young Person's concerts.

This truly is a collection of gems, both in the selection and in the playing. Christopher O'Riley has wonderful eclectic taste, a beautifully lyric style, and a knack for finding out of the way and not-yet-known treasures (and putting new luster on the regular old treasures!). The pianism is exquisite: beautiful touches in the Rameau, and especially in the delicate Rachmaninoff pieces. Several of the pieces, like the Guastavino (which are fabulous) and Davies' "Farewell to Stromness" (wonderfully evocative of those tough, remote Scottish isles), and his own arrangement of that beautiful Delibes -- these were very happy discoveries for me.
All of these little pieces (though some are not so little!) are full of love and life. The thoughtful program notes were appreciated and enjoyed as well. The sound is great.
It's a wonderful CD. Buy it. And listen to the radio show, too: FROM THE TOP. Best thing to happen to music since Bernstein's Young People's concerts.

An absolute riot, and a lot of great (if brief) music!.......2002-08-02
What a wonderful project. Pianist extraordinaire Guy Livingston has assembled 60 pieces for piano, each under one minute in length, from composers well-known and obscure, and put them all together in this delightful collection. Some of the composers you'll recognize are Englishman Dan Warburton and American William Bolcom, but all of the pieces are worth noting. Some use electronics, percussion, or prepared piano, and Livingston's pleasant speaking voice can be heard on more than one, but it's always his confident and skillful piano that's at center stage. Some are hysterical, like the piece by Ketzel Cotel, who turns out to be a cat belonging to a New York City composer, and some are quite serious and demanding. But best of all, if you don't like something, wait a minute, and some else will replace it!
A great album to have going in the background -- if you don't mind having your mind and your attention twisted around periodically -- or to listen to while you stare at nothing.

No improvement over Haebler & Melkus.......2007-05-26
I've enjoyed Ingrid Haebler's recordings of the J. C. Bach keyboard concertos for many years: the pianoforte had an agreeable, almost magically tingling sound, and the orchestral strings backup (with horns and oboes in Opus 13) was as soothing as you'd expect from recordings made in the 1970s.
When I saw that the three sets of Opus 1, 7, and 13 had been completely redone, I rushed out to order it, since I felt these delightful works could only improve in a fresh recording. But this is definitely not it.
Mistake Number One was to reduce the orchestra to little more than a chamber ensemble, so that the end result sounds like a collection of Piano Quintets. Take the sheer delight in sound-for-its-own-sake out of J. C. Bach, and what are you left with? Not the kind of contrapuntal ingenuity and complex formal handling that make up for it in, say, Mozart Piano Quintets. All of sudden Johann Christian's lovely piano concertos sound boring, emaciated, lacking in spirit, and you'd be forgiven for wondering what all the fuss was about.
Perhaps the performers realized this, too, which might explain Mistake Number 2: in an apparent effort to liven up these pieces, they performed them at ridiculously fast speeds. That just doesn't work: the leisurely tempi of Haebler and Melkus were just right. They didn't have to rush to cover up a deficiency of their own making, you can actually tell they had fun recording this music.
My recommendation, in sum: go for the recordings by Ingrid Haebler and Eduard Melkus. Although now more than thirty years old, they're not only cheaper in twofers, but it will take better musicians than this to outdo them.

Pay close attention. You could miss something..........2002-11-01
Back in 1981, Peter Gordon and David Cunningham (former producer for This Heat, member of the Flying Lizards and founder of the Piano label...) met one day at Michael Nyman's house. The two quickly struck up a friendship and would find their paths crossing repeatedly in Europe over the next ten or so years. Of couse they seized these chance meetings as the opportunity to produce the material that would later evolve into The Yellow Box.
All manner of instruments (both raw and prepared) come into play along with various found sounds and disembodied voices that drift in and out like strangers in the fog. But the compositions never become noisy or overwhelming, the whole thing has a remarkable dream-like feel to it. Albums like this are what made me fall in love with music in the first place. A remarkable sonic artifact wrapped up in an immaculate case designed by John Wozencroft.

How are they not known........2005-11-05
I first heard about LYB when they actually played a small show in
my home town Pleasantville NY. Now I'm kicking myself for not going.
After hearing Ginger I was blown away. I'm not sure if they'll have another
release under the same name, or if they will ever be recognized more, but I'll keep listening.
Music By Bullies for Bullies.......2004-09-24
Firstly, I must say that both the drummer and guitar shredder of this band are both jerks and bullies, respectively. Time and time again these two browbeaters have antagonized myself and my friends both mentally and physically. I cannot begin to count the lunch money that these two ruffians have collected over the years. Mr. Jontz, or "The Bulldozer" as he makes us call him(The Dozer or Doz for short), has repeatidly beaten me on my legs as well as my arms while shouting his trademark "Ty it down! Ty it down!"....a rather intimidating site. And this is nothing compared to the vicious and demeaning noogies given by Ian "The Dragoon" Ingram. The man's knuckles could prematurely bald a 14 year old greek boy. This being said, and all personal differences between myself and the fellows that compose this band, these rascals can rock! This one album has already made me throw away all my Staind albums and has redifined the words "rock" and "roll" for me. With tasty grooves that you can not only almost touch and feel, but actually smell, these guys have awakened the sleeping giant of the indie rock scene. Thank you Little Yellow Box! Thank you "Doz"! Thank you "Dragoon"! You have put together quite a little package here, and my ears think it's yummy.
great album--check it out!!.......2004-09-23
these guys are my friends, i love them all to death. that aside, they've put out an amazing album for all to enjoy. if you're a fan of coheed, glassjaw etc, youll love it. track #4 is my fave so far, but the whole album is great to listen to again and again. great car cd, or one to listen to at work. look out for steven, ty, mike and ian. this album is sure to give them national recognition soon enough. 5 great songs, and by the end of the cd, you'll be begging for more. check out the website. congrats guys.em

Decent, but overpriced.......2003-10-31
I bought this CD a couple weeks ago and though it does fill an interesting niche it isn't totally fulfilling. the sound it pretty rough and at $29 it was a bit of a letdown. If you can find it for less than 10 it is worth a couple weeks of listening, but otherwise your money would best be spent elsewhere.
Sorry to rain on your parade.......2003-10-29
I saw these cuties and loved their fumbling show. Unfortunately is harder to recommend the albums (the second though has its moments). Its not the fact that they on this album can barely play or speak English, as any sworn fan of Shonen Knife can tell you, it ain't got nothing to do with that. The problem is that the lyrics are attempts of more traditional rock'n'roll lyrics (with some exceptions) and so you don't get that bizzarness in songwriting themes as with Shonen. The biggest problem is really that this band does not have the songsensibilia of Naoko of SH and so there really are not these hidden gems of pop-brillians to be found underneath sometimes amaturish playing. Now I got my albums at the gig for ten each and I'm sure the albums will grow on me, just for the sweetness of their attempts to be angry (thus 3 stars), but over $ 20 for this. NO WAY MAN. That is wasting your money and if you want REAL GOOD GIRL ROCK PUNK POP MADNESS from the same label in Japan (Benten Records), check out Titan Go-Kings' fantastic Ultrasonic Wave 01 CD. If the Powder Puff Girls were for real, from Japan and played punk pop speed madness (like the wirdo little sisters of Toy Dolls) they would sound exactly like Titan. Priceless. Save your money and find Titan Go-Kings instead.

Best kept secret in riot grrrl!.......2002-12-31
These adorable Chinese girls are kicking some serious ...! They were featured in the 2002 winter issue of BUST magazine. In the article it talked about how they never realized they were feminists they just knew they were really angry. They have an old school punk sound, such as the Au Pairs or Romeo Void ,but angry feminist lyrics, with a street punk twist. I highly recomend it!
